Menards/Sylvania Team Hoping To Stay Up To Speed At Bristol

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Sylvania team hope to build on their speed from 2018 at Bristol Motor Speedway as they prepare for this weekend’s Food City 500 at the high-banked Tennessee track.

Crew chief Greg Erwin said he plans to begin Friday’s practice with a set-up on the No. 21 Mustang similar to the one the team employed last year when Menard qualified seventh for the spring race and fourth for the summer event. Menard was running third last spring when the race was halted due to weather and resumed the next day under different weather conditions that adversely affected the handling of the No. 21. LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2019) — The 2017 Top Fuel World Champion Brittany Force and her Advance Auto Parts team are heading to the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals ready for their first Wally of the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season.

After starting the season with two first round exits at the Winternationals and Arizona Nationals, Force and the Advance Auto Parts team put their struggles behind them at the recent 50th anniversary Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. They put together four stellar passes over two days of qualifying including a 3.680-second pass which earned her the No. 1 qualifier and held up as the quickest of the weekend in the Top Fuel category. Force and the Advance Auto team’s efforts also earned them a spot in the history books, when she became the first woman in 40 years to snag the No. 1 qualifier position in Top Fuel at the Gatornationals. LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2019) — Robert Hight and the Auto Club of Southern California Chevy Camaro SS Funny Car team are headed to the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas ready to add another Wally to their roster.

With the points lead, two victories and three consecutive No. 1 qualifiers, Hight has had a stellar start to the 2019 Mello Yello Drag Racing season. At the most recent 50th anniversary Gatornationals, he posted the quickest time of the weekend in the Funny Car class with a 3.852 and made history as the first racer since Kenny Bernstein in 1987 to have three No. 1s in the first three races of the season. Heading to Sin City for the fourth event, Hight is eager to continue leading the power rankings and, with Jimmy Prock, Chris Cunningham and the Auto Club of Southern California team keeping his car consistent that doesn’t seem far out of reach for the two-time Funny Car world champion. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE DATE CHANGE FOR THE FALL RACE IN BRISTOL NEXT YEAR?
“Overall, I think the schedule is really good. It just adds a lot of excitement to the year. I think going to the West Coast before Atlanta is good. I think all the cutoff races in the Playoffs are really intense, exciting places that the points can change a lot throughout those events. Yeah, I think it was good. Having a two week break is nice. Some weekends take some Sprint Car races away from me, but others add a lot more, too. So overall, I think the schedule is really exciting.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Bristol Roundtable Preview

ᴏ Josef Newgarden has claimed three of the past four
· Chevy Racing drivers off to fast start to the season
ᴏ Newgarden is points leader; Will Power earns both poles
· Ben Hanley returns to Chevy lineup with DragonSpeed

DETROIT (April 2, 2019) – A victory and runner-up finish has initiated Josef Newgarden’s best start of his eight-year NTT IndyCar Series career.

This weekend, the Team Penske driver will seek to bolster his series points lead in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park, where he’s won three of the past four races.

“Barber is an awesome track … it’s one of my favorite tracks we travel to on the circuit. It also helps that we’ve had some success there in the No. 2 Fitzgerald Chevy,” the 2017 series champion said. “But we’re hungry for more. This season is off to a great start for our team and Barber is a track we know we can continue that momentum at.”

Chevrolet Racing has won six of the seven races on the challenging 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course since its return to NTT IndyCar Series competition in 2012.
Ten drivers powered by Chevrolet’s 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, direct-injected V6 engine are entered in the 82-lap race April 7 (4 p.m. ET, NBCSN) at the scenic race course in Birmingham, Alabama, that has hosted an INDYCAR event since 2011.

Newgarden scored his maiden career victory in a CFH Racing Chevrolet at Barber Motorsports Park in 2015, starting fifth and leading a field-high 46 laps, including the final 20, of the 90-lap race. Teammate Simon Pagenaud, driving the No. 22 Menards Chevrolet this weekend, won from the pole in his 2016 championship season.

Newgarden earned a podium finish in that race and has won the past two years, starting seventh and first, respectively.

“We want to win races, but if we can’t win races, we need to at least be on the podium to keep this championship run up,” Newgarden added.

Teammate Will Power, who’s claimed the pole in both races this season in the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet, started with a third-place finish on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. He then led 45 laps at the outset of the inaugural INDYCAR Classic at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, before a mechanical issue curtailed his opportunity to post career win No. 36 that would break a tie with Bobby Unser for seventh on the all-time list.

“Something broke in the rear driver line of our car, which led to a DNF in a race I think we had a great shot at winning,” he said. “I’m still really disappointed, but the team has been hard at work since they got back from the race to give me a No. 12 Verizon Chevy that will be really strong at Barber. We’ve shown to be strong at two different types of tracks to start the year – a street course and a permanent road course. So, we just want to keep that momentum going.”

Power won at Barber Motorsports Park in 2012 to give Chevy Racing its second consecutive victory to start the season.

Returning to the Chevrolet lineup this weekend is Ben Hanley, driving the No. 81 10 Star entry for first-year team DragonSpeed. Hanley finished 18th in the season opener at St. Petersburg.

Austin Dillon and RCR’s No. 3 Realtree Chevrolet Team Lead Laps, Show Speed at Texas Motor Speedway

“We had a strong Realtree Chevrolet this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. After qualifying in the top-five and showing speed in practice on Friday and Saturday, we were able to run in the top-five through much of Stage 1. The biggest issue throughout the race was keeping up with the balance of the car. We could hold our own in clean air, but we were too loose on our last run. We led laps in the final stage before pitting for fuel with 12 laps to go. These RCR and ECR Chevrolets have had speed all year, and we put up a good fight today.”

Late-Race Incident Hurts Daniel Hemric’s Day at
Texas Motor Speedway

“After our strong qualifying effort with the No. 8 Bulwark FR/Wayne Workwear Chevrolet, clearly this was not the result we had hoped for . The car was strong all weekend long and felt good in the pack. We were too free in traffic but Luke Lambert (crew chief) and the guys worked on the handling each time we came to pit road. I made slight contact with the wall off Turn 2 late in the final stage and that eventually caused the right rear tire to go down. The guys did all they could to clear the tire, but the rubber wrapped around everything under the car and we lost a lot of laps getting it fixed. We will keep our heads high and look to rebound next week at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Tyler Reddick and Richard Childress Racing’s No. 2 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Team Qualify for Dash 4 Cash with Second-Place Finish at Texas Motor Speedway

“Another race weekend, another fast No. 2 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Chevrolet Camaro. My Richard Childress Racing team has been putting in the work both at the shop and at the track, and it shows with our results. We have a good string of top-five finishes going right now. Today, we just struggled a little bit finding a good balance that worked for both Turns 1 and 2 and turns 3 and 4 since they’re so different here at Texas Motor Speedway, but we really hit on something at the end of the race and the car came to life. If I could run the top line for restarts and then continue it during a run, the handling was much more consistent throughout a run. We’re so close to putting RCR in Victory Lane for the first time this year. We just need a little bit more. I’m excited to have qualified for Xfinity’s Dash 4 Cash event at Bristol Motor Speedway. I’m really having so much fun driving these Camaros this year.” Continue reading RCR Post Race Report – My Bariatric Solutions 300

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT WILL BE DIFFERENT IN TOMORROW’S RACE WHEN THE WEATHER WILL BE SUNNIER AND COOLER?
“Yeah, it will continue to heat up and then it provides more grip. I think the groove in (Turns) 1 and 2 will just get wider and wider and that’s where the race, I think, will be won and lost. We’re juggling a new package. We’ve got both ends of the race track that are completely different. And you have the draft. And there’s a lot going on out there. It’s like the more they can throw. MARCH 29, 2019

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1, POLE WINNER QUICK QUOTE:

GREAT WAY TO SHOW SOME RESULTS OF YOUR EFFORTS TO COME BACK: “It’s been a long couple of years, and we still have a ways to go. And, certainly race daquy is much more important than Friday, but we’ve been working so hard, and I think we are a bit guilty of trying too hard and maybe stepping outside of our comfort zone at times, and putting setups on the car at times that just aren’t proven yet. With all that said, we were very aggressive coming here and changing a lot of stuff on our mile-and-a-half program. Top of the chart all day long, and a great start for this Ally tean. I’m really proud of everybody for keeping the faith and working hard.”

THERE HAS ONLY BEEN ONE CAR NUMBER AT THE TOP OF THE BOARD ALL DAY THROUGHOUT PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING – THE NUMBER 48. WHAT HAS CHANGED FOR YOU GUYS? “We are working hard. I know I post it, and I say it, and I know my team does, some believe us and some don’t, but this is a tough, tough sport and we are guilty of trying too hard and being too aggressive with setups at times. But, with all of that said, very aggressive coming here to Texas and it paid off. We really put speed in the right areas of that car, and had a solid practice session and three rounds of qualifying.”

GIBBS AND PENSKE HAVE WON ALL THE RACES SO FAR, IS THIS A TRACK WHERE SOMEONE NEW CAN BREAK THROUGH TO WIN? “I hope so. Our practice was pretty good, but obviously those guys have done the best job in managing the races, and having the most speed. So, I’m not really sure. I think this race will be, if it stays cloudy throughout the weekend, it will be the most pack racing we’ve seen. I think the cars are pretty easy to drive relative to that practice session. We will see what happens. I feel like the other tracks the cars were harder to drive and more separation between cars so maybe that will enable some other guys to be in the show.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Texas–William Byron
