June 18, 2019, Sacramento, CA (Jim Allen) … The high-powered 410 winged sprint cars of the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Racing Series will kick-off a rare doubleheader weekend this Friday, June 21, at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville for the 32nd Annual Pombo-Sargent Classic. The following night, Saturday, June 22nd, the campaign travels to the Stockton Dirt Track for a special “Salute to First Responders” race.
The Pombo-Sargent Classic pays tribute to a pair of racing legends – Al Pombo and Marshall Sargent – who helped set the standard for exciting open wheel racing in California. The list of winners of this event over the past three decades reads like a California Hall of Fame list including from Brent Kaeding and Jimmy Sills, to Bud Kaeding and Shane Golobic.
The Stockton event honors the selfless service of all First Responders who risk their lives addressing emergencies and disasters. All current firefighters, police officers, EMT, and active Military personnel will be admitted to the Stockton Dirt Track grandstands for free with a valid ID.
To date, the King of the West-NARC 60th Anniversary season has produced four different winners in as many events. Current championship point leader DJ Netto of Hanford has been a model of consistency this year, finishing in the top five in all four events. However, he is still among a stellar group of open wheel stars looking to score their first victory lane appearance of 2019.
“We’ve been running really good all season long,” said Netto, a three-time career winner with the King of the West-NARC series. “It’s not easy to win in this series so you just have to keep putting yourself in a position to finish strong every night. The key is to not get impatient and away from that game plan.”
Netto’s lead over Hollister’s Ryan Bernal is just 12 points (459-447). Bernal, who is best known for his winning exploits in a multitude of non-winged sprint cars, is quickly figuring things out in a winged car driving for his Fresno-based Tarlton Motorsports team. Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi, who captured the season opener at Kern County Raceway Park, is currently third in points and is also deemed to be another of this weekend’s favorites to score a win.
Others expected to compete include Rookie Geoff Ensign of Sebastopol; Roseville’s Willie Croft and Colby Copeland; Chase Johnson of Penngrove; Shane Golobic of Elk Grove; Campbell’s Bud Kaeding; Nathan Rolfe and Sean Watts of Atwater; Chico’s Kenny Allen; rookie Stephen Ingraham of Fair Oaks; Oakley rookie driver Matt DeMartini; Mitchell Faccinto of Hanford; Tracy’s Kyle Offill and Jenna Frazier of Sacramento.
The King of the West-NARC racing program includes qualifying, three 10-lap heat races, the six-lap Sunnyvalley Bacon dash, and the 30-lap Fujitsu-sponsored headliner. The winner pockets a $3000 payday.
Ocean Speedway is located at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville. Front gates open at 4:30 p.m. Qualifying gets underway at 6:00 p.m. Also on the racing program is IMCA Modifieds, Four Bangers, South Bay Dwarf Cars & Ocean Midgets. Pit gates open at 2:00 p.m.
The Stockton Dirt Track is located on the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds in Stockton, CA. The address is 1658 S. Airport Way, Stockton, CA 95206. The Joe Hunt Magneto Wingless Sprint Cars are also on the docket. For more information, call 209-466-9999, or go to NARC410.com.
