Scelzi Scores 10th Top-Five Finish of Season During Fall Nationals
Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (Oct. 2, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi earned his 10th top-five finish of the season last Friday during the opening round of the Fall Nationals at Silver Dollar Speedway.
The event began on Friday for Scelzi and his Roth Motorsports, family owned team with the eighth-quickest qualifying time in their group. That lined Scelzi up on the pole of a heat race, which he won to lock into the dash. A third-place result in the dash started Scelzi on the inside of the second row for the A Main.
“We had a shot at winning it,” he said. “We ran third for the first five or six laps. As we got into traffic we gained around the bottom in turns one and two. Second place got caught behind a lapped car and I squeaked by him. I went into turn three and slid a lapped car, but the caution came out so we were put back to third. On the restart I got to the top right away in turns one and two. The second-place car got tight and bobbled. I had to lift and lost a spot. We went into turn three and just got flat ran into. I locked the brakes up and got over the cushion to miss from us being wiped out.”
Scelzi dropped four more positions after being run into, but he rebounded in the closing laps to capture a fifth-place finish. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/EiNU3kebTdU.
“We wanted to win, but to finish in the top five out of 50-plus drivers were there was a good night,” he said.
The event finale began with Scelzi timing in 10th quickest in his group on Saturday. That missed a spot in the heat race inversion by only two positions and lined Scelzi up fifth in his heat. He picked up a pair of positions to finish third and lock into the 13th starting position for the main event.
“The track was really slick,” he said. “We were really good early. I got to eighth or ninth. Rubber started coming in and we got in line. We were running in the top 10 when we had a restart with 10 laps to go. We got out of the rubber and fell to 12th, but was able to rebound and finish 10th.”
Scelzi, who ended 10th, is scheduled to compete this Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series.
“I’ve run well there in the past and I think we’ll have a good shot at running up front,” he said. “I feel really confident whenever I go there.”
