Follow a Dream

We hate that our friends are having a rough time.  It’s pretty admirable of them to continue sending out the releases and keeping us informed.

Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car team endured a third straight disappointing outing as driver Todd Veney missed the cut at the final Division 1 Lucas Oil Series event of the season.

At Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., where last year the team reached the final, Veney shook the tires in the first qualifying session and went up in smoke right off the line in the only other session for a second DNQ in the team’s last three starts. On the first attempt, Veney got back in the throttle after shaking the tires at the top of low gear, and it’s a good thing he did because opponent Melinda Green-King was all over both lanes and surely would have hit the Permatex car had Veney been coasting

“It probably looks like we’re completely lost because we haven’t done well at three races in a row,” Veney said, “but I don’t think we are. It was something different all three times.”

“We need to get this thing figured out – and we will,” Blake said. “There’s no way this car should be running like this, and we’ll be testing at New England Dragway before our next event in Reading.”

While it was a difficult weekend, the team was honored with the Best Appearing Crew award for the special “Free to Dream” shirts they wore commemorating the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States.

Kasey Kahne Racing Recap

The Kasey Kahne Racing crew finished up their second trip of the year to the west coast last weekend where McMahan scored his fourth victory of the season at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Cali.

-Paul McMahan, driver of the #83 HR Cattle/Roth Motorsports Maxim

On Friday, Paul McMahan had lady luck on his side as he picked up his fourth victory of the 2011 season at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. With a challenging racing surface, the Elk Grove, Calif. native made the best of his pole position starting spot to lead all 25 laps. The starting spot was by virtue of his win in the night’s dash. McMahan started the dash thanks to a drawing of six, which placed him on the front row.

“To get a win here in front of (team co-owners) Dennis and Teresa Roth is huge for this team,” said McMahan. “The dash draw really helped us and it meant we got to start up front which was key. The track started taking rubber early on (in the night) and they worked it a little bit after time trials. For the feature, it still had a lot of rubber so I was trying to be patient as I worked my way around here. I knew Jason (Meyers) would give me a run for my money near the end and I had to keep him at bay.”

On Saturday night at Gold cup, Paul qualified ninth, finished third in his heat and 11th in the A-main event. Paul is currently fourth in the point standings.

-Cody Darrah, driver of the #91 Great Clips/Sage Fruit/ASE Maxim

On Friday night, Darrah qualified 25th, finished ninth in his heat and eighth in the B-Main event.

Darrah qualified 21st on Saturday night at Chico and finished sixth in his heat and eighth in the B-Main event.

-Brad Sweet, driver of the #9 Red Bull/Ollie’s Bargain Outlet/Sage Fruit Maxim

On Friday night, Sweet spun out in the A main and settled for an 18th-place finish.

Sweet struggled with the track conditions on Saturday night. He qualified eighth, finished fourth in his heat and 15th in the A-main.

Beat the Heat World FInals

I just want to take a minute and reflect back on the 2011 Beat the HEAT World Finals that I hosted this year.  This event is hosted by a different agency every year and last year I put our name into the hat as the host agency….On Monday the 5th of September we were hit with 10 inches of rain in a 24 hour period….Yes the water rose….matter of fact on Wednesday afternoon the 330 foot mark on the track had 4 inches of water on it and the shutdown was under a foot of water….The water dropped and everything was perfect by race time.

That was a relief because I had invested over $1500 in trophies and plaques and over $1000 in printed t-shirts to hand out and the food for the reception and the teams on race day and no one has money to throw away nor do you want to waste a sponsor’s money.

We had the opportunity to visit three area high schools and spoke with several hundred young people about the dangers of Illegal Street Racing and the importance of staying in school and continuing their education.

Thursday came and the Beat the HEAT Teams from around the country started to arrive downtown for the car show/display and it was great.  The Students from the East Ridge High School Engine Building Team came down and displayed with us and decimated the national record engine tear down and build for us with a time of 2 minutes less than the record they set at SEMA in Las Vegas last year.  I made a special bond with the East Ridge High School and their world record engine builders.  Stay tuned for a special project that I will be working on them with this year.

Patrons of the downtown establishments poured outside to take pictures and wave as the parade or Beat the HEAT drag cars roared through downtown Chattanooga, led by our 1931 Sheriff’s Car that we seized when I worked Narcotics and turned into a parade car.

We ended up at Coker Tire and Honest Charley with Corky Coker where we had a nice reception for everyone.

Friday night arrived and everyone was off to the drag strip where we were greeted by a huge crowd that came to see the Beat the HEAT Teams in a Good Guys vs. Bad Guys match up….the crowd had a blast pulling for the bad guys…..but at last count….we won more rounds…..Chalk one up for the “GOOD GUYS”.

Saturday came and it was time for our World Finals.  Beat the HEAT’s Chaplain, Roy Sisco, retired Oklahoma State Patrol, opened our event in prayer and also a special thanks to Sgt. Major Bull and the East Ridge Jr. ROTC for presenting the colors as we paused for a minute in remembrance of 9/11 before getting started. Congrats to Mike Carroll of the Colony, Texas PD for winning Mod Cop and Gerald Cooley with the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia as runner up, Jose Ayala with the Medley, Florida PD as the runner up and Rick Wilkens from the Highland County Ohio Sheriff’s Office for winning  Pro Cop and Top Cop for 2011..

SRRT Looks Toward Mid-Ohio

The Subaru Road Racing Team, with co-drivers Andrew Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., and Bret Spaude, Bushnell, Fla., is headed to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio for the 10th and final round of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge to be held on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Given the team’s past successes at Mid-Ohio, winning in both 2007 and 2008, the team is looking to this race with optimism.

“Any time you go to a race where you have been successful in previous years, history gives you the confidence to know you can do the job,” said SRRT owner Joe Aquilante, owner of Phoenix Performance Inc., in Phoenixville, Pa., where the SRRT cars are race-prepared.

Saturday’s 2 ½-hour race on the world-famous 2.258-mile road course is also the final race of the 10-race GRAND-AM Continental Tire series season.

“This year has not been without its trials, but we’ve made a lot of progress in our efforts to develop the ‘package’ with which we compete against seven other automotive brands,” said Joe Aquilante. “Our STI has become very competitive and we have achieved new levels of performance this year.”

James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., noted, “We were under no illusions when we kicked off this campaign in January that we would be laying the groundwork for a championship-contending effort, and our team has performed well against a robust field of competitors throughout the year. [The] Mid-Ohio [round] represents the culmination of a technical development program that has been a collective effort by all our team members this season.”

Nitrous Xpress World Champion!

It seems like only yesterday that the NHRDA season began, but here it is already September and the season is over!  The good news is that your support was not wasted; we are the NHRDA Top Diesel World Champions!
Emily’s driving skills and a lot of luck landed us in the winner’s circle this weekend at the World Finals in Topeka, Kansas.  We had some pretty stiff competition when Dan Scheid showed up with the worlds quickest and fastest Top Diesel dragster as well as John Robinson’s Cummins powered Funny Car.  We were lucky enough to qualify #1 when Sheid’s dragster experienced waste gate problems on his first qualifying pass and was shut off with engine problems after his burnout on his last qualifier.  Robinson’s funny car exploded a turbo charger on his first qualifying pass and was not able to return to competition.   Matt Handwork in the Bone Shaker Altered put on an excellent show for the crowd as did all of the competitors.   It rained both days and cut qualifying to only two passes.
After struggling with rain, an uncooperative injector and a finicky dual fuel pump tune up we were finally able to battle our way to the finals facing the Bone Shaker altered.  We had experienced several engine backfires in the burnout so we decided to forgo the burnout ritual in the finals and just get the car staged and hope for the best.  When the tree dropped Emily cut her best light yet in the NX dragster and never looked back as Matt experienced trouble at mid track and was forced to shut off.  Our 8.13 ET was a big disappointment but it was good enough to clinch the World Championship!
Our racing season is far from over however.  We still will attend the remaining NADM events in Columbus OH, Denton, TX and Orlando FL.  Plus we are going to try to set a new land speed record in the standing mile in late October at THE TEXAS MILE event in Beeville TX.  That’s right, a LSR in the Nitrous Express diesel powered dragster.  We have it geared to run over 275mph so all we need now is some open space and a little luck!

Ross Hoek Motorsports

Holland, MI (September 8, 2011) – The Labor Day Weekend event in Crandon was the first time the #21 Allstar Performance, Venom Energy sponsored Ford Ranger saw action on the track since the practice incident at Charlotte. In fact when Ross Hoek Motorsports arrived at the track early Friday morning, the #21 Ford Ranger would need several more hours of prep time before it was ready for competition. Realizing magnitude of work still needed, Ross and his team didn’t rush the situation and had the truck ready for Sunday’s Round 10 race action.

The race weekend was plagued with intermittent rain showers during all three days of competition. This caused track conditions to vary greatly depending on when your class was scheduled to run. When the PRO-Light group lined up for Sunday’s race, the group was fortunate enough to have blue skies and a fairly dry race track.

Round 10 had twenty PRO-Light trucks line up side by side in two rows deep for the Crandon land rush start. Due to missing the last four rounds of racing, Ross was at a disadvantage with a second row starting position.  The race was scheduled for ten green flag laps with a mandatory yellow / caution lap at the halfway point of the race to bunch up the field.

The start saw the #21 Allstar Performance, Venom Energy sponsored Ford Ranger quickly move into eighth place by the second lap. When the mandatory yellow came out Ross was in sixth place and was looking to challenge for a spot on the podium.  After the field went back to green flag racing, the #21 Ford Ranger began to have carburetor issues, slowing the pace of the race truck. After ten hard fought laps, Ross Hoek crossed the finish line in ninth place.

“After Charlotte, our truck was a disaster,” recalled Ross Hoek. “We really took a hard hit and we tore the engine right loose in the chassis; I knew if we rushed the repairs it would come back to bite us. When we arrived at Crandon we still had to finish all the wiring and plumbing as well as mount the body and a brand new ISP containment seat. It took us until late Saturday afternoon to get our hot rod running and Sunday afternoon we barely made the call to the green flag.”

“As far as the racing, we had a great first half of the race considering we started in the second row. Then after the mandatory yellow we developed a miss in the carburetor and this really hurt the truck coming out of the corners. Other than carb issue, the truck is in really great shape and after a couple days back at the shop  the #21 Allstar Performance, Venom Energy sponsored Ford Ranger will be ready for Chicagoland.  I need to commend my crew for totally rebuilding this truck and having it ready to compete with no test time prior to the race.   We almost called it a year after that wreck but getting back on the track now will make us better prepared to run for the 2012 Championship!”

Follow a Dream Heads to Englishtown

Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car team heads to vaunted Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., for the final stop on the 2011 Division 1 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Last year, driver Todd Veney ran a best of 5.58 en route to a final-round appearance against Frank Manzo.

“It’ll be great for everybody on the team to get back to a racetrack – especially after our last two outings,” Blake said. “We’re all anxious to keep our spot in the top five in the national points standings.” Inactive since mid-August, the team dropped from third to fifth in the rankings.

“It’s time to get back into the 5.50s and time to get back into another final round,” Veney said. “Englishtown has always been one of my favorite tracks in the country, and we did well at both races there last year.”

Matt Lennen Checks In

August 28th we were out at National Trail Raceway outside of Columbus, OH
bright and early for the Import Face-Off race.  The overall turnout for this
event was crazy, a lot of people came out to this race.  More spectators
than we have seen at any event so far this year, all full classes except
ours (Forced Induction Pro) which only had 4 total.   We knew a few of the
guys out there from talking to them at other races (they live nearby) and
they were telling us how bad prep was at this track.  This was the kick I
needed to finally try making an adjustment on the HKS suspension and made it
a hair softer.  The first pass out, after hearing how bad the track was
prepped from all the regulars – 9.3@147 with a 1.375 60ft! – with the boost
controller off and lifting at the 330ft!   This put us at the fastest import
car at the event.

Decided since there wasn’t really anyone fast there that we’d skip the 2nd
qualifying pass and just nail it in the first round.  We had a few things to
change around in the ECU, got on the phone with Ray @ PFS, had him make me a
new calibration fixing a few issues and trying some additional changes to
see if I could make the trans shift correctly.   Turned the boost controller
on and went up for the first round of eliminations, the bad track prep was
showing here – spinning to a 1.49 60ft and a 9.3@150mph pass.

Back in the pits, I made a few more changes to the ECU based on the
datalog from the previous run.  We were quickly called back up for the
second (final) round of eliminations.  Ended up winning with a 9.5@133mph to
an 11.5 from the other car.  But more importantly I was able to use this
race to capture some very useful datalogs, helping track down the issues
we’ve had with the transmission.

Back home in MD this week we’ve been going over the log data and
brainstorming on the transmission issues we’re experiencing.  We believe we
have discovered the problem and Ray @ PFS is making a custom part for the
transmission that we think will eliminate the issue.  If the weather holds
out we will be taking the car out to do some test passes Monday.

CPL Racing Break European FWD Record Again

With five consecutive HKS Drag Series championships under our belt, the team here at CPL Racing had decided to take a year out from competitive racing in 2011.  Firstly to take a rest from the rigors of championship drag racing and secondly to take some quality time to further develop our car without having the pressure of having to prepare for races in between developing the car.

For some time, two fellow racers and Guy here at CPL Racing, had been planning a feature race which would happen once a year and give any racer that entered the chance to compete for a significant prize fund.  Given that any racing is expensive at a competitive level, a healthy prize fund is always welcome from the racers point of view and makes things more exciting for the spectators as it encourages the competitors to push that little bit harder and maybe take a few more risks than they otherwise would do.  We also wanted to bring sponsors on board both to allow exposure for the companies and products already associated with racing and a few that were not.   The prize fund would be made up of entry fees from the competitors and the sponsors that came on board.

We are pleased to say that this race finally came to fruition in August of this year, and the first of many U.K. FWD Outlaw Shootouts took place.

In the months that lead up to the Outlaw Race here at CPL Racing we spent a considerable amount of time and effort encouraging as many competitors to take part in the race.  So having encouraged so many of the other racers in Europe to compete we realized mid-year that we could hardly sit this one out ourselves.  So, just six weeks before the event we stopped development work on our car and put it together in the best state we could.  There was absolutely no time to build a fresh engine so we had to dust the cobwebs off the same one that had done almost a whole seasons racing in 2010.  We were not comfortable being in this position and putting it on the dyno for re-tuning was nerve-wracking.  We did however manage an astonishing 939hp on the dyno using some of our new developments.  This is well over 100 bhp in excess of what we had run in the car in 2010.

The Outlaw Race was scheduled to take place on Sunday 21st August 2011.  We arrived at the track on the Saturday before for a couple of test runs up the track.  Straight off the trailer we ran a 10.4 sec pass – but during this pass we had to let off the throttle a couple of times due to the car steering towards the wall.  With just enough time for one more test pass before the big race the following day we warmed the car up ready and pulled to the start line.  We launched, and this time the car pulled up the track in a straight line and a clean pass netted us an amazing 9.7 sec pass at 151mph.  This was quick enough to secure the record for the quickest FWD car in Europe again (a spot that had been taken from us by a lightweight Vauxhall at the end of October 2010 with a 9.8 second pass).   We were extremely happy with the 9.7 – not a bad result from only the 2nd run of the year!!!

Unfortunately, on checking the car over after the run we could hear a faint knocking coming from the bottom end of the engine, so we were unable to compete in the Sunday race however we knew we were already on borrowed time with this engine so were very grateful to have been able to get where we had the previous day.

Tim Allison Update

The final race of the season  was held last night at Limaland Motorsports Park with another gtreat crowd and car count, again as most of the season lady luck has been with us when it comes to the pill draw and nothing was different last night as we drew dead last again in the second heat so again we had our work cut out for us,we charged to the front and finished a good solid 3rd and that got us qualified for the feature and with the inversion that had us starting in the 8th position for the 25 lap feature,
since it was the last race of the season we thought we would try few different things and see what would happen and we got going good for about the first 6 -8 laps and things was looking pretty goo and jumped the cushion and lost a few spots and in the end we faded to finish 14th overall, not what we expected but we didn’t tear it up for the 10 lap king of the quater miles race

So for the 10 lap shootout we changed the car again and the car wa sreally nice now and in the 10 lap shootout it is pretty much a win it or wear it kind a race and on the first start we came out leading the race and for some reason the called the start back, not what we needed, on the second restart we ran side by side for 4-5 laps with us on the cushion and the other car in the middle and it wa shaping up to be a great race and then we got racing with another car in the picture and all 3 of us was going for the lead and few laps later we spun out,but the car was really nice!!!!  so learned few things that will really help us out, but the season is over at limaland motorsports park for the year

our next race looks like we are canada bound for the canadian nationals in the middle of spetember and one more race at eldora speedway oct. 2
so till our next update thanks again for all your help and continued support and have a great day!! thanks. tim allison

KKR Update

-Cody Darrah, driver of the #91 Great Clips/Sage Fruit/ASE Maxim

Darrah had to work for the win as he started 12th when the 35-lap main event took the green flag. From the start it was obvious that Darrah had one of the top cars in the field as he sliced and diced his way to the front. Kinser started from the pole position and led the first 20 circuits until Donny Schatz muscled around him to take the lead in lapped traffic.

Schatz continued to pace the field until a late race red flag ended up being his downfall. As the cars tried to slow down, Schatz tangled with a lapped car, which sent the four-time champion to the work area. With Schatz off the track temporarily, Darrah assumed the lead and never looked back. Throughout the two green-white-checkered attempts, Darrah held on and even ran away from the back on the second one. Teammate Sweet worked his way around Kinser for second.

“If I would have been the boss, I would have fired me a long time ago,” Darrah said as he high-fived his crew in front of his #91 Great Clips Maxim. “We’ve been through a lot this year and this victory makes it all worth it. There are a ton of people to thank but first and foremost I have to thank Kasey (Kahne) for sticking by me and keeping a ride for me after I got injured last year and through all the things we’ve been through this year. I watched Steve (Kinser) on a few of those restarts and kind of learned a few things. We had an awesome car tonight. This feels amazing and I am so happy to be back in Victory Lane. I have to thank Great Clips too for sticking with me.”

On Friday night, Cody qualified eighth, finished second in his heat, eighth in the dash and eighth in the A-main event. Cody is currently eighth in the point standings.

-Paul McMahan, driver of the #83 HR Cattle/Roth Motorsports Maxim

Paul had two solid nights in Canada. On Saturday night at Castrol Raceway, he qualified ninth, won his heat, finished seventh in the dash and fifth in the A-main event. On Friday night, Paul qualified third, finished third in his heat, won the dash, led the first 17 laps of the A-main before settling for a fourth-place finish. Paul is currently fourth in the point standings.

-Brad Sweet, driver of the #9 Red Bull/Ollie’s Bargain Outlet/Sage Fruit Maxim

Brad Sweet turned in impressive performances both nights at Castrol Raceway. On Saturday night, Brad finished second behind teammate Cody Darrah. Brad qualified 11th, finished second in his heat and seventh in the dash. He challenged Cody for the win at the end, but settled for a second-place finish.

“This feels like a win to me even though we finished second,” said Sweet as he watched Darrah celebrate. “It’s a great team effort from everyone at KKR. Cody is a great driver and to see him over there means an awful lot to us. He’s one of my best friends. Our Red Bull/Ollie’s Maxim was great tonight and hopefully we’ll be in Victory Lane soon.”

On Friday night Brad qualified seventh, won his heat, finished sixth in the dash and finished seventh in the A-main.

We were at Limaland Motorsports Park Friday night,  and lady luck has not been on our side as two weeks in a row we drew again dead last.  That got us in the 2nd heat and started tail 9th and ran 5th and that got us qualified for the feature but not far enough in the finish to make the redraw, so in the feature we started 13th and got up to 8th, and ended up finishing 13th overall for the night

Saturday night we were off to Fremont Speedway for a co-sanctioned race with the 305 sprints versus the 360.  There were over 55 cars entered.  This time the draw was a little nicer as we drew for the 2nd heat and started 3rd. We ended up finishing 3rd and that got us qualified for the feature but not for the redraw again.  We would start 11th in the feature , we were racing on a very hard to pass super slick track and had made our way up 8th, but hit one of the big tires in the corners and spun out and finished with a disappointing 19th place finish.

This Friday night is the last race of the season at Limaland Motorsports and the annual King of the 1/4 Mile race.  This should be a great night of racing as the weather looks great!  We are hopiong to have a great night  and maybe we can pull off another victory this year to capture our 100th win.
