Leonard Wood Has A Lifetime Of Indy Memories

Indianapolis Motor Speedway, site of Sunday’s Crown Royal 400, is one of the most revered arenas in the sporting world.

It hosted its first race in 1909 and in the years since has become what most would agree, the most famous race track in the world.

Up until 1994, the Speedway was the exclusive race course of the open-wheel racers who competed in the Indianapolis 500. Since then, NASCAR has played a big role at the track with the running of the 400-mile race commonly known as the Brickyard 400. REFLECT BACK TO THAT WIN AND THEN RETURNING NOW. HOW BIG OF A DEAL WAS IT TO WIN HERE AT THE BRICKYARD?
“For me, when I look back at the picture of getting to kiss the bricks, it’s special for a lot of different reasons. But one of those was because Christy was pregnant with Carter, 7 months I think with a big belly, and I remember on that day as we kissed the bricks, looking at her and telling her what a special memory we were going to have with him and the fact that we’ve won the race and we’re kissing the bricks and he’s in your belly. DO YOU GET ANY SENSE OF THE DIFFERENCE OF WHAT WINNING THIS RACE MEANS BETWEEN YOU VERSUS JEFF GORDON?
“For me it’s a special track for me. My whole world was the Indy 500. I wanted to be here and race in an open wheel car. Growing up in Southern California NASCAR just with the television package and media coverage then it wasn’t all that popular, especially in the 70s and 80s when I was coming up through. My whole direction and kind of guidance from Chevrolet was to move from off road trucks, to Trans Am, to Indy Lights to IndyCar. They came to me one day, I think it was at the Long Beach grand prix or at a Trans Am race meeting some owners and they said ‘hey we are pulling out of IndyCar next year. If you want to have a future in motorsports you need to move to North Carolina. You need to figure out this NASCAR thing.’ So it wasn’t long after that I bought a one-way ticket and was living in Charlotte trying to figure things out. Red Horse Racing at Eldora Speedway

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series took to the dirt for the 11th race of the season at Eldora Speedway for the 1-800-Car-Cash Mud Summer Classic. Teams completed two practice sessions on Wednesday morning, with Timothy Peters recording the 16th-fastest lap in the first session and the third-fastest lap in the second. Ben Kennedy was 29th-fastest in both sessions, but received damage in the first after a brush with the wall. Following practice, single-truck qualifying laps set the fields for five 10-lap qualifying races. Kennedy started the second qualifying race in fifth, while Peters started the third race in the third position. Kennedy finished sixth in his qualifying race, just missing the last transfer position and forcing him to compete for a starting spot in the last chance qualifying race. Peters finished second in his qualifying race, earning him the eighth-place starting position in the Mud Summer Classic. Kennedy finished second in the last chance race, earning the 27th starting spot in the main event, but he had to start at the rear of the field after the team made unapproved adjustments. In the Mud Summer Classic, Kennedy finished 12th and Peters crossed the line in 23rd after a late-race spin.
