Great Nationals Week in Iowa, 49 Team Adds New Crew Chief

Well known Pennsylvania crew chief Lee Stauffer was added to the No. 49 teams roster earlier this month, and the team quickly found success by winning the $20,000 to win Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway last Monday, the week leading up to the Knoxville Nationals.

The KKR teams worked hard over four nights of racing at the most prestigious race week on the World of Outlaws schedule, finishing inside the top 10 in their qualifying races and they both finished in the top five in Friday night’s World Challenge race.

On Saturday, Brad Sweet captured his first career podium finish in the Knoxville Nationals, the richest race on the schedule which pays $150,000 to the winner. Daryn Pittman started the 50-lap race in 15th, and worked his way up to seventh before the checkered flag.

The teams kick off a mid-west to west-coast swing tonight at Junction Motor Speedway in Nebraska before stops in North Dakota, Alberta Canada, Washington, Oregon and California.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series traveled to Michigan International Speedway for the 13th race on the 2015 schedule. In the first practice session on Friday in the Irish Hills, Timothy Peters was 12th fastest, while Ben Kennedy was 14th on the board. The Red Horse Racing teams turned in the 10th (No. 17 team) and the 12th (No. 11 team) fastest laps during the final practice session later that afternoon. On Saturday morning both Peters and Kennedy transferred to the final round of single-truck qualifying runs, with Kennedy securing the fourth starting spot and Peters the fifth position. In the Careers for Veterans 200, Peters finished eighth and Kennedy was relegated to a 25th-place finish after being collected in an accident on lap 82.

Timothy Peters Finishes Eighth at Michigan International Speedway

Timothy Peters collected his eighth top-10 finish of the 2015 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season with an eighth-place result at Michigan International Speedway. Peters started the 100-lap Careers for Veterans 200 from the fifth position. He maintained his place inside the top five of the running order and crew chief Marcus Richmond called the Danville, Virginia driver to pit road for service while under caution on lap 27. The No. 17 Red Horse Racing team put four fresh Goodyear tires on the red and white machine, packed it with Sunoco fuel, and made a wedge adjustment to help with a tight-handling condition. Just past halfway, Peters reported a vibration in the right front tire and slipped back to the ninth position. With Peters happy with the truck’s balance, the team changed four tires and sent him back out with a full tank of fuel during a green-flag pit stop on lap 64. Peters was able to gain a spot in the closing laps to take the checkered flag in the eighth position in the Irish Hills of Michigan.

Ben Kennedy Collected in Late-Race Incident Michigan International Speedway; Finishes 25th

Involved in a multi-truck incident on lap 82, Ben Kennedy and the No. 11 Local Motors team were relegated to a 25th-place finish in the Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway. The Daytona Beach, Florida native advanced to the final round of the single-truck run qualifying session and earned the fourth starting position on Saturday morning. After the green flag flew, Kennedy remained in the top 10 but a sudden loss of power in the No. 11 Tundra caused him to fall back in the running order. He was able to restart the black and white truck while the field remained under green-flag conditions. He drove from the 20th position up to 18th before coming to pit road under caution on lap 27. The No. 11 pit crew changed the four Goodyear tires, added fuel and made a track bar adjustment before sending him back out to restart from the 12th position. Kennedy reported that a tight-handling condition had continued and crew chief Scott Zipadelli called for an additional wedge adjustment during a four-tire, green-flag pit stop on lap 64, and a myriad of chassis and air pressure adjustments on lap 72 while under caution. Working to climb back into the top 15, Kennedy was collected in a Turn 4 incident on lap 82, ending his day early. The No. 11 Local Motors team was scored with a 25th-place result.

Ben Kennedy Quote:
“We had a fast Local Motors Toyota Tundra again this weekend, it just got really aero-tight after the start of the race [at Michigan International Speedway]. The guys worked hard to make adjustments during pit stops and unfortunately we got caught up in an accident there in the end. Just a frustrating end to the day. We’ll turn around quick and head to Bristol (Motor Speedway) early next week.”
