JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 2ND
WAS THERE ANY STRATEGY BEING PLAYED OUT THERE DURING THAT RUN?
“There were a lot of strategies being put into use. Having to really come through and work out for you is just the toughest thing, because 20 some guys and a lady have an idea of what is going to work and timing that right and finding what works for you is impossible. Not impossible, just the odds very low. Hopefully it is entertaining. You don’t really feel like you are doing your part as a race car driver in a qualifying session like this, but it is plate racing and if it’s entertaining I guess I’m okay with it.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega–Jimmie Johnson

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 88 DIET MOUNTAIN DEW CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media today at Talladega Superspeedway. He discussed his standing in the Chase, needing a win Sunday to advance, how to control the race, Talladega preparation and other topics. FULL TRANSCRIPT:

WHAT’S IT GOING TO TAKE FOR YOU TO GET INTO VICTORY LANE TOMORROW AT TALLADEGA?
“If I understand this style of racing that this package creates, we need to be in the front and we need to be controlling the restarts at the end of the race – being able to choose the inside or outside line and who’s going to be pushing you on those particular starts. That guy there is going to be the one controlling the race. With this particular package, the leader is not impossible to pass but he really has the upper hand. With our cars and how capable I know our cars are and have been throughout the season at plate tracks, I know we can fend off pretty much most challenges that we’re presented with. We got the lead here in the race earlier this year and were a little short on fuel. We ended up coming down pit road and not taking the gamble. The gamble worked out for the other guys who were in the same boat as us. We didn’t do it for some reason. But when we were up there leading, I felt like I had control of the race. Guys were making some runs and trying to make passes, but were able to fend them off relatively easy. We need to run the race how we run the repaves or the road courses and run the race backward. We’ll probably have to gamble a little bit on fuel and be a little bit short. But to get that advantage over 42 other cars, you’re going to have to risk more in regards to fuel mileage or what pit strategy you have on pit road. We’re willing to do that. We don’t have anything to lose. If the race plays out that, it would be the best scenario for us.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega–Dale Earnhardt Jr.

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media at Talladega Superspeedway to discuss advancing to the next round of the Chase, the challenge of Talladega and the fallout from the Charlotte weekend, among other topics. FULL TRANSCRIPT:

YOU CLINCHED A SPOT IN THE ELIMINATOR ROUND OF THE CHASE WITH LAST WEEK’S WIN AT CHARLOTTE. DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR STRATEGY COMING INTO TALLADEGA?
“Obviously it takes a lot of pressure off by not having to worry about a strategy. You just go race. Those guys have worked hard on the cars to make them as good as they can no matter the scenario. At the bare minimum, we owe it to them and the fans to race as hard as we can and take the same approach as we have all year – try to run well in practice, qualify well, lead laps and try to win a race. If it works out, it works out. That’s the thing that comes out of last week. If it works out, fine and if doesn’t, fine. Just race hard.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega–Kevin Harvick

WHAT’S YOUR OPINION OF THE CHASE NOW THAT WE’RE HALFWAY THROUGH IT?
“I think there’s definitely an increase of intensity on the track and off the track; there’s no doubt about that. You’ve opened it up to more competitors, which makes the intensity even more. You get more attitudes and egos in there. That, I think, is kind of expected. Some of the skirmishes (post-race, Charlotte) were a little bit unexpected. And probably the people that were in the skirmish were unexpected, as well. But you’ll have that, from time to time.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega–Ryan Newman

ON BEING AT TALLADEGA: “Talladega is one of the more laid-back weekends for all of us. It’s typically one practice to see if the car feels good. I’m glad they base qualifying if it gets rained out on your practice speed because it gets all the cars on the lap for at least one session. Valerie Thompson seeking to break her personal best top speed of 212 mph at Texas Mile speed competition

Valerie Thompson seeking to break her personal best top speed of 212 mph at Texas Mile speed competition

Scottsdale, AZ – October 16, 2014 – Seven-time land speed record holder and one of the world’s fastest BMW racers, Valerie Thompson, will return to Beeville Texas for the Texas Mile, October 24 – 26, her second visit to the event this year. Thompson set a personal best top speed of 212 mph during the March 2013 Texas Mile event on her record-setting CTEK Battery Charger sponsored BMW S 1000 RR.

The Texas Mile is a bi-annual motorsports festival created in 2003 for high-performance vehicle enthusiasts, welcoming a wide variety of racing vehicles, including motorcycles, modified street cars and race cars. Participants come from all over North America to test themselves on one of the fastest and most challenging tracks in the world.

“I really enjoy racing at the Texas Mile. It’s a very well run event and the one-mile track is smooth as silk. We were here for this year’s March event, but were rained out,” said Thompson. “We’ve made a lot of improvements to my BMW since March, earning two new land speed records at the Ohio Mile and Bonneville. Our team is very hopeful I can break my 212 mph mark, weather permitting.

Thompson’s team will be providing free battery charging services for competitors and race attendees at their pit display during the three-day speed festival, compliments of her primary sponsor, CTEK Battery Chargers.

The Texas Mile is held at Chase Field Industrial at 2745 Byrd Street, Beeville, Texas

Follow a Dream–Maple Grove Report

Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream team knocked off former world champ Tony Bartone in the first round at the NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., before a broken transmission line sidelined the team in round two.
Driver Todd Veney qualified 14th with a run that easily would have been well into the top half of the field had a similar problem not knocked the transmission out of high gear near the half-track mark. “I coasted for the whole back half of the track and still ran a 5.83 at 199 mph,” he said. “The car was going almost 209 mph at half-track – our best all year – so that was more than a little encouraging. That would have been about a 5.59, but even coasting for the last 600 feet it was quick enough to get us in the show.”
A decided underdog in the first round of eliminations against Bartone, the former world champ who has more career victories than any driver in the field, the Follow A Dream team ran a backpedaling 5.74 at 260.26 mph – the car’s fastest speed this season – to win. “One of these days we’re going to win this race,” said Blake, whose life-changing experience at this event in 1998 led him to form the Follow A Dream organization. “I’ve always said I’d rather win this race than win Indy, and at some point it’s going to happen.”
The final race of 2014 is the NHRA Finals Nov. 14-16 at the world-famous Pomona, Calif., track, where the Permatex/Follow A Dream team was runner-up in 2005 and won in 2006.

2014 Raider ET Challenge

The final weekend of the 2014 Raider ET Challenge at Maryland International Raceway was a challenging success. After postponing Virginia Motorsports Park’s Autofab Raider ET Series weekend twice due to weather, it was finally rescheduled for this past weekend at MIR. Rain persisted all day on Saturday and at 3pm, race officials decided to cancel Saturday’s race and try to complete Sunday’s race if the weather cooperated. Fortunately, the weather held out on Sunday, and the Raider championships were able to be settled on the track. Like always, the racers were extremely pleased with the entire program. KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET SS – WINNER
ON THE WIN:
“Everybody on our team has just continued to build better race cars and we know that we’ve had the cars to run up front and lead laps and do the things that we need to do. Things just haven’t gone right and we’ve made some mistakes; things haven’t gone right ore than not. But I just want to thank Budweiser and Jimmy John’s and Sprint and all the fans for everything that they do. Outback and Chevrolet and everybody on this car. This was the night that we needed to win. I don’t want to go to Talladega next week.”

WITH A WIN, YOU’RE GOING ON TO THE NEXT ROUND; HOW MUCH RELIEF IS THAT FOR YOU?
“Oh, we came here and tested thinking that this was going to be the hardest round to get through because of Talladega. There’s so much that you can’t control there. We wanted to try to control the things that we could control. We felt like Kansas and here (Charlotte) were playing to our strengths; and just see where it fell after that once we get to the next round. So I’m really proud of everybody at SHR. I’m really proud of all my guys on this team. I just can’t thank everybody enough.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DRIVE TO END HUNGER CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 2ND
ON HIS SECOND PLACE FINISH:
“I’m really proud of that finish and really proud of that effort. Kevin (Harvick) got out there on us after that green flag stop. It looked like we were going to be second. I didn’t want to see another restart, because every time we start on the inside, we seem to lose positions; there at the end, and the whole race. We were just trying to tune to make it better. We got off a little bit and lost some track position. I had some terrible restarts. But there at the end, four tires and good adjustments and good restarts and we were able to get right up in the thick of it. Kevin was tough. I knew when he got out in front it was going to be hard to beat him. But, how about this drama? I’m telling you, this new format has created some serious drama! I’m glad I’m not in it this time. I’m really happy about this second (place finish). It doesn’t make us, by any means, comfortable going into next week, but a lot better than it could be.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S MONOPOLY CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 3RD
WHAT HAS BEEN KEY TO YOUR RESURGENCE OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS?
“Well, we’ve actually been good all year. I don’t know that we’ve put the finishes together, but our McDonalds Monopoly Chevy was really good tonight. I looked up at one point and I was in second; and Kyle (Larson) was catching me in third. I give a lot of credit to all the guys in the shop and the engine department and everything that goes into getting our cars here. We struggled in practice but they did a great job of putting the right set-up in it and then adjusting all night long. It was a good night for the whole group.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 6TH
ON HIS NIGHT:
“Finishing sixth is a good finish, but I’m disappointed because I thought I had a good shot at winning. I just got excited trying to catch the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) when he was in the lead and I scraped the wall and messed up the aero and I was really tight after that. That green-white-checkered really helped us out. Still disappointed because I thought we had a good enough Target Chevy to win this race.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 7TH
“It was a good rebound for the problems that we had missing the wreck and broken jack. These guys don’t give up, I don’t give up. Just proud to fight back, had some fun, just didn’t have the best car on the short run there at the end when we needed it. To go from where we were with 120 (laps) to go 18th to seventh wasn’t too bad.”

KASEY KAHNE, NO. 5 PEPSI CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 10TH
ON HIS 10TH PLACE FINISHED:
“It was better than we ran most of the night. We just struggled. The only way I could get it to turn in the center was to be so loose. Then it would still get tight after 15 laps so we would go slower at that point. So we just tried a lot of things and never really got it going. Tried to stay out there at the end we were seventh and ended up 10th. We kind of finished where we were running the last 60 laps, but it wasn’t a great night for us at all.”

THOUGHTS ON WHERE YOU FINISHED AS FAR AS THE CHASE:
“I mean we are in a spot where we can definitely make it, advance to the next round if we don’t wreck, same as a lot of guys. Talladega will be interesting. I think there will probably be a lot of strategies that go on throughout the first three quarters of the race and then there are going to be a lot of guys who just have to race at the end. If you wreck you won’t make the next round, if you don’t wreck you will advance.”

WHAT IS THE CONFIDENCE LEVEL FOR TALLADEGA?
“Well we have good, fast cars for those types of tracks. Results are kind of all over the board, but I would say that is for a lot of people. Sometimes you are in other people’s wrecks there and things like that. I think Talladega is a track I have always liked and look forward to. Sometimes you can’t control everything and that is something that will be the same for all of us at Talladega. It will be interesting how it all works out. It will be a lot of pressure on everyone. It will change throughout the entire race all the way to the checkers.”

KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 STATE WATER HEATERS CHEVROLET SS – 11TH
ON HIS RACE:
“I would call it a really good effort. The lap times were there. We were running second at half-way. As the night progressed, different weaknesses show up. This was a new setup underneath the car. It is tough to know exactly how to dial it in when you are working with a new setup. It was a free-for-all at the end. We were running eighth, we came in for tire and ended up finishing 11th, and so that maybe wasn’t the right call. But all-in-all, it was nice to run up front with the guys, and to show a turn in the right direction from where we had been running.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 SCOTT PRODUCTS CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 12TH
“We started off a little bit off. But I thought we made some good gains on it. Just missing just a little bit. There were a couple of runs that I thought we were really good. Track position was really critical too. I would get stuck behind a car and I just used my tires up behind them. Thought we were going to get a top-10. Made a two-tire call there. Had a good restart and just fought hard. We are making gains. I’m happy with it and stayed on the lead-lap all day. We have to qualifying better. We can’t qualify back there, it makes the race too hard. But we fought hard, and we are making gains. We have to keep working. I think there are little, small things that we are missing instead of big things. Getting better.”

MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 14TH
“We beat ourselves tonight. I had to drive back to pit road twice and that was costly. We had a fast hot rod that could run up front, but those two extra stops for a loose lug nut and a vibration prevented us from having another top-10 or top-five finish. Considering all that happened tonight we did come away with a decent result but we expected more.”

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 DIET MOUNTAIN DEW CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 20TH
“The vibration broke the shifter in half and it just wasn’t a good night. The car just wasn’t handling well and the vibration was really giving us a lot of problems. We had it in practice, but we still couldn’t fix it. So, I don’t know.”

ON HIS NIGHT:
“We had a real bad vibration and broke a transmission shifter off. We only had third and fourth gear there and lost a lap trying to get off pit road on a green flag stop. We had a pretty good car; a top-10 car. The vibration issue was causing a lot of balance issues, and grip issues. But, we had a good enough car to run in the top-10. This isn’t what we need to do. I don’t know. We’ve had some phantom vibrations throughout the year and not really had those until the last year and a half, or two years. So it is hard to say.”

ANOTHER TOUGH NIGHT, SO NOW ON TO TALLADEGA. WHAT’S TALLADEGA MEAN NOW?
“Go out there and win it. We can do it; we have won there a lot of time. I know what we need to do. We will just have to build a fast car and hope that we don’t have any gremlins and try to go out there and win it. We had a lot of gremlins tonight. We had a good car in practice and we never could get a change to show it. The vibration just tore the car all apart. Broke the shifter and made the car handle real bad.

“We did have a pretty good car all weekend; we were running okay there in the race. I think we could have easily finished in the top-10. The shifter slam broke it half. I mean it is steel, it shouldn’t be breaking, but the vibration was that bad.”

PAUL MENARD, NO. 27 SCHROCK/MENARDS CHEVROLET SS – EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE FAILURE ON LAP 136

WHAT PUT YOU IN THE GARAGE HERE EARLY TONIGHT?
“Something with the motor. I had a really good car. It’s too bad, awesome car, we had a pit stop problem and went to the back, but drove our way back up into the top 15 or so. We definitely had a top five car, just unfortunate. Something let go in the motor.”

DID YOU HAVE ANY WARNING AT ALL?
“A little bit. It vibrated for a while and then the vibration got better and that is never good when the vibration goes away. It got better for like 10-15 laps and then it just locked up off of (turn) two.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS – MADE CONTACT WITH THE WALL IN THE FINAL MINUTES OF FINAL PRACTICE

ON WHAT HAPPENED WHEN HE SCRAPED THE WALL:
“Just ran out of race track, I was trying to get comfortable at the wall and get my car balance set-up so I could run up there. The car is really fast, especially the run prior to our last outing. We feel really good about things. The good news is it’s just a big scratch on the side of the car. The guys are going to take it down to tech and make sure that everything checks out for the second time. We set it up on the scales and nothing looks bent, so just a little drama and new paint job on the right side before the start of the race and we will have this Lowe’s Chevrolet ready to go.”

WHAT HAPPENED?
“Ran out of race track. Just got in there too hot and slipped up and scratched the right side of the car. The good news is it doesn’t look like there is any big damage. It didn’t feel like I hit hard it just kind of scratched the paint. Unfortunately a little bit of extra work for the guys, but prior to that our car has been really strong this second session. We hit on some stuff over the break and it was just feeling good. I’m much more optimistic now than I was the last two or three practice sessions. Things are good.”

WAS THAT A SIGN THEY WERE LOOSENING THE CAR UP?
“No, actually it went the other way. Actually got too tight and drove off in the corner hopeful it would turn sharp enough and I could see it coming. It wasn’t turning sharp enough when I got into the outside wall into (turn) three.”

HOW HAS THE REST OF THE NIGHT BEEN FOR YOU? WHERE DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE GOING INTO TOMORROW?
“We were awesome the last two or three runs. The car was really good. So we are very optimistic, especially now that things look okay with the car and there isn’t any suspension or chassis damage it looks like it’s just cosmetic.”

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF COMING UP FROM 21ST AND HAVING TO FIGHT THROUGH TRAFFIC:
“That is why I’m hanging on the wall, got to find a different lane. If I sit there and try to run the bottom with everybody I’m going to junk and just kind of trapped. I have been working bottom, middle, top just making sure that my car has got a nice balance between all three lanes and have been able to produce lap times doing so. Trying to cover all my bases I’ve got to go forward tomorrow night.”

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 DRIVE TO END HUNGER CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 2ND
ON THE SPEEDS:
“Oh my gosh. It’s so fast; so much grip and so much commitment. Luckily our Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet had a lot of grip, too. In (Turns) 1 and 2, the last two runs, I just nailed 1 and 2. But the run before that last one, I got into (Turn) 3 a little bit too hard. Tried to get a little too aggressive through there and washed out the front. So, the guys made an adjustment and I drove in there and I just was a little bit too much. I should have been a little bit more committed because the front end finally, it cut; and I was like ‘No!’ That’s all right. That’s a great effort. Practicing here during the day and qualifying and racing at night is tough. We struggled through a few things today but I’m so proud of this team. That’s certainly a good place to start this race.
