SUMMIT RACING TEAM GOING FOR 8TH CONSECUTIVE NHRA WIN IN KANSAS

SUMMIT RACING TEAM GOING FOR 8TH
CONSECUTIVE NHRA WIN IN KANSAS

Mooresville, NC (May 18, 2016)—With seven wins at seven races, Team Summit Racing continues to dominate the 2016 NHRA Race Series in Pro Stock. This weekend Jason Line and Greg Anderson go for win number eight in their KB Racing Chevrolet Camaros at the 28th Annual NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

Anderson is eager to get back behind the wheel and race in Topeka.

“I’m excited that we get to try it again in a few days. When you have a slight advantage like we have, you want to race every day,” said Anderson. “We look forward to Topeka and the chance to get another Wally.”

Heartland Park Topeka has been good to Anderson over the years. He’s won as a driver four times, and five times while working for Warren Johnson.

Line is looking for his first win at Heartland Park Topeka.

“I’m still working on my relationship with Topeka. It’s been a tough place for me,” said Line. “Hopefully this year I can finally fix that.”

Summit Racing Funny Car driver Tim Wilkerson is also ready to win at Heartland Park Topeka. He has been in the final round twice in Topeka and wants a win at one of his favorite tracks.

“I’m always a fan of Topeka. It’s home for the Kansas City group from Levi, Ray & Shoup. We always get a lot of good people that come out and root for us,” said Wilkerson. “I’m excited to go there and hopefully rebound from the Atlanta race.”

Aero-optimized body developed for downforce, stability

INDIANAPOLIS – Today Chevrolet and 16-time NHRA champion John Force introduced the all-new 2016 Camaro SS Funny Car that he’ll race this weekend at the NHRA Kansas Nationals, in Topeka, Kan.

The new Funny Car body is the first based on the sixth-generation Camaro SS. Force’s teammates Courtney Force and Robert Hight will introduce new Camaro SS Funny Cars later this season.

“I started my career in a Chevrolet and I couldn’t be more excited to put this new Camaro SS Funny Car on the track,” said Force. “With all the assistance from Chevrolet, it not only looks great, it’s designed to perform better than anything we’ve had before, with a shape that should help us get down the track quicker and with greater stability.”

The team conducted computational analysis and scale-model wind tunnel testing to help give the new body the airflow management qualities necessary to deliver the downforce required by the 10,000-horsepower supercharged race car, as it accelerates from 0 to 330 mph in less than 4 seconds – and in a mere 1,000 feet.

Among the unique aerodynamic elements is a new, integrated front splitter that helps direct more air over the body to increase downforce. The design also incorporates new, dual blow-out – or “burst” – panels, safety devices that relieve underbody pressure to help keep the body on the chassis in the event of an engine failure.

Additionally, the new body, which is lighter than John Force Racing’s previous Camaro Funny Car bodies, carries the distinctive styling signatures of the 2016 Camaro SS’s front- and rear-end designs.

“The 2016 Camaro has been a great success in the showroom and Chevrolet is proud to contribute to its debut in NHRA’s Funny Car class,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports. “It joins the 2016 COPO Camaro in the Sportsman classes, strengthening Chevrolet’s presence in drag racing, which dates back nearly 60 years.”

Camaro at the drag strip
Camaro’s legacy in drag racing dates back to 1967, when longtime Chevy racers such as Dave Strickler and Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins, pushed the new pony car up through the Super Stock ranks. Jenkins would go on to pioneer the new Pro Stock class, giving the Camaro its first win there in 1970.

Enterprising racers and dealers used Chevrolet’s COPO (Central Office Production Order) special order system to create high-performance Camaro models intended for one thing only: winning on the drag strip. That included the legendary 1969 Camaro ZL-1, powered by an all-aluminum 427 originally developed for the Can-Am road racing series.

Camaro Funny Cars also began appearing on strips shortly after the car’s introduction, shaking up the burgeoning class with Chevy power. Bruce Larson and Dick Harrell were leaders, pushing their blown fuel “floppers” into the 7-second range.

Texan Lee Shepherd lead Camaro into the 1980s, with four consecutive Pro Stock titles, his performance enabled by the groundbreaking Big Block engines developed by his partners David Reher and Charles “Buddy” Morrison.

More recently, Camaro has become a fixture of the Pro and Sportsman ranks. Behind the Pro tree, John Force Racing has returned Camaro to the Funny Car class, while Camaro drivers have dominated the Pro Stock field – including consecutive championships in 2014 and 2015.

The Sportsman classes are driven by the COPO Camaro, Chevrolet’s factory-built race car that uses a production body and specially developed Chevrolet racing engines. New 2016 COPO Camaro models are hitting the strip this season, advancing the COPO legacy and pushing Chevrolet drivers farther and faster.

“Racing improves the breed and that’s why Chevrolet races,” said Campbell. “The wins we record on the track help us design better cars customers will buy in the showroom.”

Partial Transcript:

HOW MUCH DO YOU GUYS COMPARE YOUR RESULTS AGAINST EACH OTHER ON A REGULAR BASIS?

TY DILLON:
“I think we both know about every week, where the other one finishes. We both want to do well and we both want to push each other to be the best. We want to compete against each other for wins because that is the ultimate goal. We are always paying attention and we are always talking to each other on the weekends to see what we can do to help each other. I have been learning a lot from Austin in these Cup races that I have been running. But again, the ultimate goal is to be racing for wins against each other and if it comes down to that we will both be happy.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Bristol–Austin & Ty Dillon

QUALIFYING QUOTES
FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 2016

POST QUALIFYING DRIVER QUOTES:
HELIO CASTRONEVES, NO. 3 REV GROUP TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, POLE WINNER: ON HIS LAP: “It was a moment. It was interesting. It was in turn four actually which was something we never had. The first lap was really big and I was really happy with the balance of the car. I was very surprised actually that it happened. At the end of the day, the car was strong. The REV Group Chevrolet was really, really strong. Now we have to keep pushing so hopefully we finish at the top.”
ON THE SPEED: “19 second a lap, it is pretty impressive. The fans that are going to be here at Phoenix are going to see the fastest cars in the world going around this place.”

TONY KANAAN, NO. 10 GE LED CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 2ND: It was pretty good, and the conditions changed a lot since this morning, so it was a little tricky to make a decision in what to do with the car. But I think big props to Chevy and Pratt & Miller on their accurate data because we made some changes in the car. It was totally blind, just according to the numbers they gave us, and it was spot on.

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 2 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 3RD: “I felt we did a good job there with what we had. We had such a bad first practice, it was a bit of a mess. So we recovered pretty well. We have a short practice tonight. So you have to guess. It is hard. It is going to be very hard because conditions are different and the track is going to change between today and tomorrow.”

CHARLIE KIMBALL, NO. 83 NOVO NORDISK CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 4TH: “I think qualifying is really important here at Phoenix. If the race track races like it did during testing last month, passing will be at a premium. Having a solid qualifying effort today was important. We spent a fair amount of time working on everything this morning in practice, but it was broken up due to two big yellows for accidents. We were fortunate enough to get a few qualifying simulations in early and I was pretty happy with the car overall. The 83 car looks good and is quick at the same time.”

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 5TH: “We wanted to be 1-2 all weekend! While we weren’t able to accomplish that, our main goal is to win the race. We still have a good opportunity in front of us for that. It’s a good thing when you’re a little frustrated about starting 5th! I know there’s more speed in the car, we just didn’t quite get the right downforce level for qualifying in these conditions. IndyCar is so tough, we’re fighting over hundredths and thousands. It doesn’t take much to get a jump on your competition so we’ll chalk this up and remember it for next time.”

SCOTT DIXON, NO. 9 TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 6TH: “The car was ok today. It’s always tough when someone puts it in the wall just before you go out and qualify. The Target car was pretty strong and my teammates all did well in practice and we worked together on setup info. We struggled a little bit with overall grip in qualifying. It wasn’t ideal but I think we can be strong in the race.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 FUZZY’S ULTRA PREMIUM VODKA CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 7TH: “We hung it out there like we needed to and got up relatively high up in the field. Not quite what we wanted, I thought both myself and Ed were going to be pole contenders for sure. We had great cars with the Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolets. We were just battling the conditions there. I don’t think we quite had what we needed, but even though we’re not on the pole we still have fast racecars!”

MAX CHILTON, NO. 8 GALLAGHER CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 8TH: “I had a pretty good run and immediately gave Kanaan some feedback when I got out of the car and he came up. It was amazing how much the track can change in such a short period of time. It’s tough being the first car out there without any feedback but I think the Gallagher team will be ready to go for tomorrow night.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 9TH: “We had a lot of push in the Verizon Chevrolet in our qualifying run and we just didn’t have the right balance. We had to lift going into Turn 1 so we lost some speed there. So we’ll start in the middle of the pack tomorrow. It will be a long race and we’ll see how things go from there. Excited to be back racing here racing in Phoenix and I think it will be an interesting race.”

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 DEVILBLISS TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 10TH: “I don’t think it was a really good run to be honest. The DeVilbiss Chevy had a lot of movement on the tires on the first lap and it was very tricky into turn one. So, we lost a lot of time in the first lap. It’s going to be a
long race but it just started so, we look forward to tomorrow’s race.”

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, NO. 11 TEAM HYDROXYCUT KVSH RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 15TH: “This morning the Hydroxycut machine had a lot of understeer. So for this afternoon we made some changes, but it is always tough when you go into qualifying with a question about what you have. The car was very free going into the turns and started to push mid-corner and out, so I wasn’t sure what to do… I backed out of the tools, but it wasn’t enough to pull a good run. I am not quite sure what happened, but we will take a look at the data, make some changes for tonight’s practice and see what we can do in the race tomorrow.”

Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in battle of multi-time Pro Stock champs

Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in battle of multi-time Pro Stock champs
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20) — Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his Elite Motorsports team didn’t take a gator-sized bite out of the competition, but the five-time Pro Stock champion is still pleased with the progress of his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart after the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals on Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.

Coughlin qualified a season-high No. 6, beat Chris McGaha in the first round, and scored a huge starting-line advantage on Greg Anderson in the second round before shaking the tires and falling out of the running.

“We took a small bite of their margin of performance advantage,” Coughlin said of the KB Racing-powered cars, each of which has won at the first two races. “I think the class itself is getting caught up a little bit by the looks of it. The Gray Motorsports cars are going faster, and we inched up on them a little bit more on the Mopar side. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in battle of multi-time Pro Stock champs

Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin Sr. bounced in first round of Gatornationals

Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin Sr. bounced in first round of Gatornationals
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19) — The Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals on Saturday at Gainesville Raceway ended too soon for JEGS.com Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin Sr., but the defending series champion is leaving Gainesville with a fast race car.

Coughlin qualified No. 7 and made one of the quickest passes in the first round of eliminations, but he lost against a .003-second reaction time.

“We made some decent runs here, and we tested pretty good in the off-season and made good strides,” Coughlin said. “We had a good race, but the guy was .003 on the Tree, and that’s what you’ve got to be to win.”

Steve Matusek’s .003 light gave him an advantage that Coughlin’s 5.822-second pass at 256.65 mph couldn’t overcome. Matusek’s run of 5.873 at 247.57 mph was enough to win by a little more than a hundredth of a second.

“We weren’t far behind, but we were enough behind to get beat by the difference between the .82 and the .87,” Coughlin said. “We’ve just got to get off the starting line a little better. That’s racing.”

Coughlin, though, knows his team is capable of rallying, just like it has done in the past. Led by talented crew chief Steve Petty, the JEGS.com team of Mike Rees and Kyle Pettis helped Coughlin make improvements through the three rounds of qualifying in Gainesville.

He made a top qualifying pass of 5.870 seconds at 255.24 mph and then went even quicker in the first round. That kind of improvement bodes well for a long Pro Mod season.

“In 2012, we got beat in the first round here, I think, and we still accumulated enough points to win the championship,” Coughlin said. “There’s a lot of racing left, and we’ve got a good hot rod and a good team. These guys work hard, I work hard. The other guy had a little better Tree, but we’ll keep kicking it.”

Jegs Racing–Pro Stock star Jeg Coughlin Jr. dreaming of a third Gatornationals title

Pro Stock star Jeg Coughlin Jr. dreaming of a third Gatornationals title
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19) — The progress five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his Elite Motorsports teammates have made from the first pass of the season to this point have the 58-time national event winner dreaming of a third Gatornationals title.

“For the first time all year we only needed to fine-tune our car between rounds of racing, and the results speak for themselves,” Coughlin said. “It’s a big step for this brand-new program, and to see our Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart qualified sixth in this very tough field is a testament to a lot of hard work.

“After what I would call just an okay opening day, we went out there in Q3 earlier today and even though I did a lot more driving than I needed to we got to the other end and the guys came on the radio and said we ran a 6.651. I immediately told them we have at least a 6.62 in the car because I’d lost a least a few hundredths with my driving, and sure enough we came right back out and went 6.627 at 208.30 mph.”

The strong finishing effort earned Coughlin lane choice over No. 11 qualifier Chris McGaha when elimination action begins at noon ET on Sunday. McGaha topped out with a best pass of 6.644 seconds at 208.46 mph.

“It’s been a couple of mixed-emotion days with Mother Nature and what seemed to be a crazy forecast, but somehow we came out on the good side and got all four qualifying runs in,” said Coughlin, who won this event in 2001 and 2008. “I’ll be real honest and tell you the truth, we needed all four runs.

“We basically started out by mimicking the efforts my teammate Erica (Enders) had in testing earlier this week and went from there. That tune-up didn’t exactly agree with what the track wanted to give us yesterday, and we ran a 6.71 and a 6.69 in those first two runs. We all knew there was a bunch more in there.

“It’s exciting because both cars are coming around, and even though it’s taking a little time we’re really blown away by how far we’ve come since mid-February.”

Allen Johnson Taking East Coast Race Debut As Clean Slate

GREENEVILLE, T.N. (February 22, 2016) – The debut East Coast race brings Allen Johnson and his Marathon Petroleum Corporation/J&J Racing Dodge Dart GT to Gainesville Raceway this weekend for the 47th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. With early exits at the first two events of the season, the Marathon team is ready to move forward while learning all they can about the new fuel injection systems and translate it into round wins.

“Gainesville is one of my favorite tracks,” said Johnson. “This race is kind of the coming out race for us on the East Coast and there’s a lot of Pro Stock fans out there.”

Johnson and his team plan to spend several days testing at Brandenton Motorsports Park in Florida before they make the trip to Gainesville.

“We’ve still got a learning curve to go through and get the car a little better with driveability but we’re all working on it as hard as we can. I think three days of testing in Bradenton before Gainesville will be really good.”

Johnson explained that although that he has had many highs at Gainesville Raceway, including wins in 2013 and 2014, his favorite memory would be debuting the Dodge Dart at this event.

“Winning the first race out with the Dart has to be my most favorite memory,” reminisced Johnson. “It was pretty awesome.”

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 14) — For the second time in his wildly successful drag racing career, Troy Coughlin Sr. will defend a hard-earned Pro Mod championship when the NHRA J&A Services Drag Racing Series kicks off at this weekend’s 47th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

Coughlin made a late-season charge to clinch his second Pro Mod title at the final race of the year last October in Las Vegas. The championship matched the one he claimed in 2012, with the two titles bracketing a pair of runner-up finishes. KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUDWEISER/JIMMY JOHN’S CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 2nd
HOW DID YOU LOOK AT THIS QUALIFYING SESSION TODAY:
“Well, the first round I didn’t feel like we had the raw speed that a lot of the guys had. I think that shows a lot about what our racecar is going to be like in race trim and just how consistent it was throughout the speed on each round. Our Budweiser/Jimmy John’s team did a great job in keeping up with the changes that we needed throughout the three rounds and we were able to keep it pretty consistent. I got my entry a little bit screwed up into (Turn) 3 that time and got it pointed the wrong direction in the middle of the corner and then I had to put a wheel in it and got it cocked sideways and scrubbed some speed. All-in-all just a continuous improvement throughout the rounds and wound up being pretty good.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Texas–Qualifying Notes

(Nov. 1, 2015) – Jeff Gordon took the lead late in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway to score his first win of 2015 and ninth overall at the Virginia short track. The emotional win was significant in many ways for the driver of the No. 24 AARP Member Advantages Chevrolet SS. He becomes the most successful active driver at Martinsville in his final career race as a full time driver earning his ninth career Grandfather Clock trophy. He eclipses his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson who holds eight wins at the iconic venue. Gordon’s 93rd career NSCS victory punches his ticket to the Championship round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship in Homestead. It was the 238th NSCS win for Hendrick Motorsports and their 23rd win at the 0.526-track.

TEAM CHEVY DRIVER POST QUALIFYING NOTES AND QUOTES

SCOTT DIXON, NO. 9 TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, POLE WINNER: “It’s the Target car! The Target car obviously has had strong runs here with 10 wins for Chip Ganassi and five with myself driving the No. 9. So it is a combination. Even that lap I messed up in (turns) 12 and two. There is definitely a bit of speed and we waved off the last lap as well and Will (Power) came pretty close so good thing we have a little buffer there.

“We are starting in the right position, but as we saw last year, anything can happen. We started 22nd and won from there with obviously a pretty big break in strategy. Team Target has done a heck of a job all weekend. The car rolled off fantastically. It is always great to be here at Mid-Ohio with so many fans. When the weather is just like this, turns four and five is packed already. It is fantastic to see.”

“We can’t really race for the championship right now. We have to race for wins. It is hard with that mind set when you get close. Even at Milwaukee and Iowa we were fairly good and we thought we had the two in the hole there and both of those races turned around and didn’t capture the points that we needed. I think we are 47 points back. There are still a lot of points to go. There are 200 and something points on the table. We’ve been strong all year, but we haven’t got the results that we wanted. We’ll see what we can do!

“The Verizon IndyCar Series is very, very strong. And Chevy, man, just keeps dominating. Big thanks to Chevy!

“It is always hard to know, you have to manage the tires and see how they wear, but the Firestones have been unbelievable this weekend as far as consistency and grip and everything. The second run I knew I hadn’t really had a clean run on the reds as far as getting a lap together. Even on that last lap there I messed up (turn) two pretty big and that last (turn 12). We were definitely up off on the last lap, so we just had to wave it off. I’m glad that we’ve had a ton of time and have a ton of speed in the Target car, but as we saw last year you can see how strategies can be and what teams try with us winning from the back.”

WILL POWER, NO. 1 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 2ND: “(Scott) Dixon’s really good around here, but it would be nice to have a win. If everything falls our way, we can definitely win. No question we need to for the championship. That’s our goal.”

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, NO. 11 TEAM HYDROYCUT – KVSH RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 3RD:
“A good day for the Hydroxycut team, but not good enough to get Dixie (Scott Dixon) and Will (Power). I was a little surprised at the gap. I don’t understand how they can pull stronger laps in the Firestone Fast Six, but it is what it is. We just have to keep digging. I think we made a huge improvement on the Firestone red (alternate) tires, which is very satisfying. If you are going to have a good race at Mid-Ohio you are going to have to be strong on the reds. Starting third we are in the running to win tomorrow. Chevy has given us reliable power and if things pan out right, the car is very strong on the black (primary) tires, so we can make it happen.”

HELIO CASTRONEVES, NO. 3 HITACHI TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 4TH: “As you have seen over the weekend, we were never able to get a clear lap, which actually was good. It kind of held us a little bit back, but in the end of the day it was a great effort from my engineer, Jonathan Diuguid. He was on it and cool and relaxed. When you have the people around you with that kind of coolness, it just makes you better. For me, it was perfect to put down good two laps there. It was tough, very tough, but we’re going to get ready for tomorrow and have a good result. I have no doubt it’s going to be another tough race, not only mentally but especially physically because we’re going pretty fast out there.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 67 HARTMAN OIL CFH RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 5TH: “We’re doing a good job executing. We might not have had the ultimate speed today, I definitely did not have (Scott) Dixon’s speed. We were maybe a little better, third quick may have been possible. We had another tenth or two in it, I just didn’t get it out of it. Dixon’s lap was out of reach for us. We’re there, we’re in that top group. We make sure to execute very well every weekend, we find ourselves in the top five pr top six and we do a good job on race day. That’s really all we are doing, we’re just trying to be there and capitalize on good opportunities.”

CHARLIE KIMBALL, NO. 83 NOVOLONG FLEXPEN CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 6TH: “The No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Chevrolet was just fast today. The team worked really hard to consistently make the car better after each session we had this weekend. It obviously doesn’t hurt to have Dixon to learn from here at Mid-Ohio. He’s so good here and his data has been really helpful. It’s nice to see a couple of Chip Ganassi Racing Teams’ cars up front in the top 10.”

TONY KANAAN, NO. 10 NTT DATA CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 8TH: “I think we had a really fast car today for qualifying – we just weren’t able to make it into the top six. The competition was so tight and everyone was putting up such close lap times that even a little bit of understeer was enough to keep us out of the final round of quals. We’ll just have to make sure we have the right strategy in place and hope we can move up through the field early.”

LUCA FILIPPI, NO. 20 FUZZY’S VODKA CFH RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 9TH: “We knew qualifying was going to be very, very close. It was very important to do everything correctly, which we did in Round 1. In the very last lap of the Top 12, I was on a lap that could have been good enough for the Firestone Fast 6, but I made a small mistake. In this very tight field, that mistake ended up costing us the opportunity to advance. We were fast and it’s good to have both cars in the Top 10. We have a lot of potential for tomorrow.”

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 2 HAWKI PERFORMANCE TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 10TH: “To be honest with you it’s taken a lot of hard work by everyone on the Verizon Chevy team to get to where we are. We had a problem with the engine yesterday and lost almost an entire practice session. Since then we have just been behind. We’ve been trying to catch up and we improved a lot this morning. We were seventh in the morning session and qualified 10th. I just had a too much understeer in the first round and we didn’t adjust enough in the second round.”

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 PPG AUTOMOTIVE REFINISH TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 15TH: “It’s been a rough day for PPG Automotive Refinish Chevy. Now it’s all back to normal. We had some technical issues yesterday and especially today in practice as we didn’t run any laps because of that. Unfortunately, we lost a lot of valuable track time. But quite frankly I am satisfied with my performance in qualifying, but I just needed a little more time to find the limit of the new aero kits. That’s what cost us today. We are starting P15 which is interesting because there’s a lot of strategy that we could do and maybe our luck could around come tomorrow’s race.”

STEFANO COLETTI, NO. 4 KV RACING TECHNOLOGY CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 18TH: “I am disappointed about qualifying today. I had a good car and we had the possibility to advance to the next round. Unfortunately I made a mistake on the final lap, which would have put me P4 in the group. I have to thank my crew and Chevy for giving me a good car and will now focus on the race tomorrow and see what we can do!”

SAGE KARAM, NO. 8 COMFORT REVOLUTION/BIG MACHINE RECORDS CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 19TH: “It wasn’t the way we wanted qualifying to go for the No. 8 team. It was a tough session and the COMFORT REVOLUTION/Big Machine Records car was fast overall. I got blocked a few times and tried to recover to get a good lap in to advance, but I went off in the end and couldn’t put it together unfortunately

Kevin Harvick’s Strong Run Results in Third-Place Finish at Indianapolis
First Time Since 2002 That Chevrolet Doesn’t Reach Victory Lane at Famed Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS, July 26, 2015 – Not this year. For the first time in more than a decade, a Chevrolet did not end up in Victory Lane after a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS).

Kevin Harvick’s third-place finish led four Team Chevy drivers in the top 10 in the Crown Royal presents the Jeff Kyle 400 at The Brickyard on Sunday, snapping a streak of 12 consecutive (2003-2014) victories in the Brickyard 400 for Chevrolet. It was the longest active winning streak for a manufacturer at any track in the series.

Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Jimmy John’s/Budweiser Chevrolet SS, led four times for a race-high 75 laps, but lost the lead shortly after a restart with just eight laps remaining. Two more cautions resulted in a green-white-checkered finish.

“We had a great day,” said Harvick, following his 14th top-five in 20 races this season. “I think everybody did a great job, just in that, I think, second- or third-to-last restart where the 22 (eventual runner-up Joey Logano) and 18 (eventual winner Kyle Busch) were able to get hooked up and kind of get by us, and I lost control of the race there.

“Just didn’t pan out there at the end, but everybody did a great job all day.”

Harvick, whose victory in 2003 started Chevrolet’s winning streak at IMS, remains in first place in the 2015 driver standings with a 69 point lead.

Martin Truex Jr., No. 78 Furniture Row/Visser Precision Chevrolet SS, ran in the top 10 for most of the afternoon before finishing in fourth place.

Also finishing in the top 10 for Team Chevy: Kurt Busch, No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet SS, eighth, and Kyle Larson, No. 42 Target Chevrolet SS, ninth.

Jeff Gordon, No. 24 3M Chevrolet SS, who won the very first NASCAR event at IMS in 1994 and is the only stock-car driver to win five races at the Brickyard, slid into the outside wall between Turns 3 and 4 while trying to avoid a spinning car, and spent 50 laps in the garage for repairs. The accident relegated the four-time series champion to a 42nd-place finish in his last season competing as a full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver.

“Today was an unfortunate day,” said Gordon following the race. “It seems like in recent years it’s been kind of feast or famine for us here. But I tell you what, from the first time I came here all the way through last year and even this year the fans have been amazing, the experiences have been amazing, the wins. Everything has been incredible and I feel so fortunate to have just gotten an opportunity to race here. Certainly to have five wins here is just unbelievable as well.”

Kyle Busch (Toyota) earned the victory followed by Joey Logano (Ford) and Denny Hamlin (Toyota) rounded out the top-five finishers.

The series continues next weekend at Pocono Raceway. The race can be seen on NBC Sports Network, starting at 1:30 p.m., and can be heard on MRN and Sirius XM Satellite.

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 JIMMY JOHN’S/BUDWEISER CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 3RD
POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT:

THE MODERATOR: Kevin, you ran up front throughout the race, contending for the win. Just your thoughts about how you thought your team performed, how you thought the car performed and overall your assessment of today’s race by the No. 4 Chevrolet.

KEVIN HARVICK: Yeah, we had a great day. I think everybody did a great job, just in that, I guess, second‑ or third‑to‑last restart where the No. 22 (Joey Logano) and No. 18 (Kyle Busch) were able to get hooked up and kind of drive by us and I lost control of the race there and didn’t really have what I wanted on the restarts once the No. 18 got control, the speed was too high and I spun the tires on the next one, and just didn’t get the restarts all put together like I needed to. Just didn’t all pan out there at the end, but everybody did a great job all day.

Q. At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, are restarts here more important than any other track maybe?
KEVIN HARVICK: I don’t know about that. I think restarts have become an important part of racing in general over the years, just to get yourself out in clean air and be able to stay out front and do the things that make your car run at the best speed that it can because it’s obviously much faster out front than it is in traffic.

Q. How did the changes to the cars affect the racing today?
KEVIN HARVICK: I think everybody put in a lot of effort to really try to make everything a lot better, spent a lot of money, but I don’t know that we accomplished everything that we were looking to accomplish. Cars are extremely hot inside. That was probably the biggest surprise that crept up on everybody. I know everybody spent a lot of money to get the cars here and put a lot of time and effort into putting the puzzle together. I know my team did a lot of extra work to come to this race after we had already come here and tested and already spent that money to come here and test for a few days, and then to come back and have to race something different was a huge undertaking for the teams for a huge science project that probably didn’t really change that much. But everybody tried real hard, and in the end, I think our ‑‑ our goal is more drafting and more pack racing, so we’ll see if we can get to that.

THE MODERATOR: Kevin, thanks for coming in. Good luck next week at Pocono.

FULL TRANSCRIPT:

YOU HAVE A TREMENDOUS PARTNERSHIP NOW WITH MICROSOFT AND WINDOWS 10
“Yeah, I’m excited about this relationship. It’s awesome that a company like Microsoft has gotten involved in our sport. And they’ve been sort of easing their way into it and this is a great step in that direction to have them on the side of the car. It’s a great partnership for Hendrick Motorsports because we use so many programs and so much software to try to understand what these cars are doing and try to get that information from the race car and try to understand it, is really a challenge.
