WHEN WE’VE GOT DAYTONA BEHIND US AND YOU’VE GOT SPEED AT ATLANTA, HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL ABOUT THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS?
“’Well, it’s big. I’m just proud of everybody at RCR and ECR with this Caterpillar Chevrolet. We were so close. I really wanted to beat my old buddy, Buddy Baker’s record there. Been tied with him for a while so that was kind of rough. But I’m just proud of the guys and proud of the effort. It is the litmus test for us for a lot of the rest of the season. It was a good start for sure.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Atlanta Qualifying Notes

Mechanical woes end Todd’s Phoenix run

Mechanical woes end Todd’s Phoenix run
Race Recap: With his Funny Car debut in the rearview mirror, Todd was looking for more round wins in Phoenix.

The DHL Toyota team started strong with three solid passes; their best was Todd’s first career Funny Car pass in the 3.8 second range. The 3.889 second pass in the third qualifying session bumped Todd into the top half of the field. However, it would prove to be a intramural battle with Todd facing his Funny Car teammate, Alexis DeJoria for the first time.

Troy Coughlin Jr. set to begin pro career
in SealMaster Top Fuel dragster
POMONA, Calif. (Feb. 6) — Troy Coughlin Jr. is ready for the ultimate test of his drag racing skills with his first national event in a Top Fuel dragster at this weekend’s 57th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona. The third-generation driver has succeeded in every class he’s raced, but even he admits the challenges of piloting the 10,000-horsepower SealMaster rail are daunting.

“I’m completely humbled,” Coughlin said after three days of testing in the Arizona desert. “It’s just so fast. Everything comes at you so quickly in the seat. It’s much more intense than I ever imagined. This is one aggressive racecar, and it never stops accelerating during the run. It’s a beast, and it’s also very, very cool.”

Team Kalitta completes off-season changes

Team Kalitta completes off-season changes

YPSILANTI, Mich. (December 5, 2016) – Kalitta Motorsports is pleased to announce that current Top Fuel driver J.R. Todd is moving to the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car seat vacated by Del Worsham. In turn, Troy Coughlin Jr. will move from the planned part-time sixth team to a full-time seat aboard the SealMaster Top Fuel dragster.

Todd is making his return to the Funny Car class, but for the first time as a driver. He worked on Bob Gilberston’s Funny Car during the 2003-2005 NHRA seasons with current Kalitta employees Nicky Boninfante and Tommy DeLago.

“Connie told Jim O the DHL Toyota is a special car and that I was the right guy for the job, which was a huge compliment to me,” said Todd, who will make his Funny Car debut at the Circle K Winternationals in February. “I am going to miss Del as a teammate as he has always been one of my heroes. I want to also say a huge thanks to SealMaster and their awesome franchisees. They are great people and it was an honor to represent them.”

Todd turns to the Funny Car class after a career season aboard the SealMaster Toyota Top Fuel dragster. In 152 Top Fuel events, Todd has earned nine victories, 19 final round appearances, nine No.1 qualifiers and 149 round wins. He was the 2006 AAA Road to the Future rookie winner and has placed in the top five in the point standings two times, including a fourth-place effort this year.

“Ever since I worked with Nicky and Tommy D on a Funny Car, driving one has been in the back of my mind and most people have known that. The DHL Toyota has quite the legacy and it is a huge honor to be picked to drive it.”

DHL will continue as the primary sponsor on Todd’s Toyota Camry Funny Car for the entire season.

Coughlin, Jr. will have an elite team to drive for during his rookie season. In 2016, Todd took the SealMaster machine to a race win in Sonoma, 37 round wins and a top five finish in the point standings.

“I am thrilled to be competing full-time for Kalitta Motorsports in 2017 with an incredible backer like SealMaster and their franchise owners,” said Coughlin, Jr. “The car is one of the best looking machines on the race track and it is awesome to be able to know I will have a car that can compete for the title.”

Coughlin, Jr. won the 2013 Super Gas title in division 3 and is a two-time NHRA U.S. Nationals winner. In, 2015, he drove in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod series and was named Rookie of the Year. In his career, the 26-year-old driver has driven Junior Dragsters, Super Comp, Super Gas, Top Dragster and Pro Mod machines. Earlier this year, he earned his Top Fuel license.

NHRA Lifetime Achievement award winner and drag racing legend Connie Kalitta will continue alongside Rob Flynn in their roles after their outstanding 2016 season. SealMaster remains as the primary sponsor on the machine for all 24 events.

“I am excited for the future of our team,” said Jim Oberhofer, Vice President of Operations, Kalitta Motorsports. “First, I want to thank our incredible partners, DHL and SealMaster, for helping make this transition seamless. Both J.R. and Troy are ready for the 2017 season. J.R. is a very motivated driver and continues to be a perfect fit at Kalitta Motorsports. I know he will be a great ambassador for DHL and Toyota and I look forward to see what the season holds. I am also thrilled to be able to get Troy into a full time seat. He proved to be a very precise driver during our test session in Las Vegas and I know he is going to do a great job in the SealMaster Top Fuel dragster.”

Finally, the Kalitta Motorsports Funny Cars will also see a reorganization of the team’s crew chiefs. Todd’s DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car will be led by Jon Oberhofer and Todd Smith as co-crew chiefs. Smith comes from teammate Paul Lee’s Funny Car. Former DHL co-crew chief Nicky Boninfante will join Tommy DeLago on the Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car driven by Alexis DeJoria and Glen Huszar will lead Lee’s McLeod Racing Funny Car. All five Funny Car crew chiefs are former NHRA champions.

Both Coughlin, Jr. and Todd will have solid teammates backing them up. Coughlin, Jr. will partner with 2016 championship runner-up Doug Kalitta in the Top Fuel ranks, while Todd will be joined by Alexis DeJoria and Paul Lee in the Funny Car ranks. Coughlin, Jr., DeJoria, Kalitta and Todd will all compete full-time with Lee planning a part-time run.

Reigning Pro Mod champion Troy
Coughlin still has a chance to defend title
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 24) — It seems every year about this time Troy Coughlin finds himself in an intense battle for the J&A Services Pro Mod world title. This season is no different as the reigning champ arrives at this weekend’s 16th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals with a chance to claim his third championship of the last five years.

One year ago, the task was much easier as Coughlin pulled into The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway trailing Mike Janis by just 28 points. With his JEGS.com twin-turbo Corvette in perfect running order, Coughlin was able to catch and pass Janis to snatch the title away. The final race in Vegas was the only time he led the points all year. Continue reading Reigning Pro Mod champion Troy Coughlin still has a chance to defend title

1st – Kevin Harvick, No. 4 Busch Hunting Chevrolet SS
2nd – Alex Bowman, No. 88 Axalta Chevrolet SS
3rd – Chase Elliott, No. 24 3M Chevrolet SS
5th – Tony Stewart, No. 14 Mobil 1/Rev The Vote Chevrolet SS
6th – AJ Allmendinger, No. 47 Kroger/Stouffer’s/Stouffer’s Kitchen Chevrolet SS
11th – Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet SS
12th – Kasey Kahne, No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet SS

POST QUALIFYING QUOTES:
KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 BUSCH HUNTING CHEVROLET SS – POLE WINNER
“I just got to the green a little bit better. The car was too loose the time before. And I got to the green better. It was good in (Turns) 1 and 2; but I felt like I gave up a little something in (Turns) 3 and 4 coming to the checkered. But, I’ve just got to thank all my sponsors and everybody on this team, Chevrolet and Hendrick engines and chassis for everything that they do and for everything that Stewart-Haas does. This has just been a fun car to drive today. Hopefully we can get it dialed in race trim.”

ON THE RACE ITSELF:
“Well, we struggled when we first rolled off the truck in race trim and got our car a little bit better and better and better. Hopefully what we learned in Qualifying, we can apply some of that stuff to the race trim stuff and go from there.”

ALEX BOWMAN, INTERIM DRIVER, NO. 88 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 2ND
WHAT WAS THAT RUN LIKE FOR YOU?
“Honestly, we didn’t put the greatest lap together. In (Turns) 1 and 2, we were a little free in and didn’t really keep it on the bottom like I needed to. Turns 3 and 4 were really good. It means so much for Hendrick Motorsports to take a chance on me for these races. I’m really thankful to be here. I hate that we didn’t get the pole. We were so close. It’s definitely my best starting spot by a bunch, but you’d always like that pole.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 3M CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 3RD
THOUGHT THAT WAS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE POLE. WHERE WOULD YOU SAY YOU LOST IT?
“Well, I thought I lost it in Turns 1 and 2, but they said I lost it in (Turns) 3 and 4. We’ll have to go back and look at watch. Obviously I wasn’t right. Everybody has been working really hard to get better. This has not been a very good place for me, historically in Qualifying; or in the race, for that matter. So, I’m really happy with that and I’m very proud of the team. We’re excited for Saturday night.”

MAKING MULTIPLE PASSES THROUGH TECH INSPECTION, WHAT’S IT LIKE TO JUMP IN WITH NEARLY NO TIME TO GET READY?
“It’s kind of part of the game. I think we see it pretty frequently these days. It’s kind of the game you’ve got to fight to push these things to where they need to be. It’s a good starting spot, but it’s just a starting spot. We have to also recognize that and go get ‘em on Saturday night.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 KROGER/STOUFFER’S/STOUFFER’S KITCHEN CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 6TH
“It makes a huge difference all the work that they put in. I can’t thank Stouffer’s and Harris Teeter for being on the racecar and all the great sponsors that we have that are a part of it, Kroger, everything that they do for us and on down the line all the sponsors. It’s a good start.”

WHEN WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THIS RACE RUN?
“I would like to have my Sunday off, so I want to race when we are supposed to and have a fun Saturday night race. That is what makes this race so much fun being Saturday night. Home race for everybody, for our crew guys it would be nice, especially mine. Our road crew especially they are on the road and then they come back at 7:30 a.m. in the morning Monday morning and start tearing the car a part. I want to run it Saturday night for a lot of reasons, but most importantly for all of them to get some rest because they deserve it.”

FIVE CHEVY’S IN THE TOP 10 SO WHERE ARE ALL THOSE TOYOTAS AT?
“Well, I can’t speak on the Hendrick cars, obviously they’ve got a lot of resources when it’s time to step up they usually do. For us, it’s the nature of the beast. We are trying to grow. We are trying to continually get bigger and better. Sometimes you take a step back, you know during the summer it’s hard, we lost a couple of race cars. They don’t just magically appear again at the race track or at the race shop. Like I said, it’s a brand new cars and it’s really the first batch of new cars that we are going to have. We are going to have a new car the rest of the year, but it’s the first batch since we started the year once all the cars were new. It makes a big difference. That is what makes the Sprint Cup Series so hard is the fact that these big teams no matter what rules package, tires, no matter what you throw at them they make downforce, they make grip and they get better. That is what we are fighting against and that is what we are trying to do here.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 DOW COATING MATERIALS CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 19th
WHAT WAS MISSING IN ROUND 2?
“We were just too tight. I was going to worry about it in the first round. We were too tight and we made a big swing at it there and freed it up. It helped in (Turns) 3 and 4, but it was still too tight in (Turns) 1 and 2. So, we’ll work on it. We had a good car in practice. We just missed our balance a little bit in this nighttime stuff. We’ll be fine. I’m really happy with our Chevrolet.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 25th
WERE YOU CONSERVATIVE DURING THIS FIRST ROUND OR WAS THAT WHAT YOU HAD? ARE YOU HOPING FOR SOME PRACTICE TOMORROW?
“I just got loose in (Turns) 1 and 2 on my lap and lost a little bit of time there, probably gave up a tenth or more. Who knows? But, then we just ended-up waiting a little bit too long to make another run. We were sitting on the bubble and didn’t really expect that the No. 83 would go faster. And, it bit us.”
