Tough Week for Follow a Dream

In a complete reversal of fortune from the 2010 Division 1 Lucas Oil Series event at Atco Raceway, Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream team missed the cut. Last year, driver Todd Veney won the race with low e.t. of all three rounds of eliminations and top speed of the meet, a career-best 261.17 mph.

It was the first time in nearly four years that the Follow A Dream team failed to qualify for a race. “That was one long drive home,” Veney said. “I forgot how bad it feels to not qualify. We’d been to the final round at six of our last seven divisional races, but this time, nothing went right.”

“It was just a tough weekend,” said Blake, whose team remains a solid third in the Top Alcohol Funny Car national standings. “It happens. We couldn’t make it down the track on either attempt, but it’s behind us now. We’ve got the Cecil County divisional in two weeks, and we’ll be back on track there.”

Follow A Dream Heads to Atco Raceway

Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream Top
Alcohol Funny Car team heads to Atco, N.J. for this weekend’s Lucas Oil
Series event at Atco Raceway, where last year driver Todd Veney set low e.t.
of all three rounds of eliminations en route to victory. The team also won
the event in 2007 over current nitro Funny Car racer Bob Tasca III.

“We had a great weekend at Atco last year,” Blake said. “We beat Frank
Manzo, which is never easy to do, and made our fastest run ever [261.17
mph]. Everybody who works on this car deserves another win – they’ve been
busting their tails all year long.”

Qualifying sessions are set for 3 and 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, and
eliminations are scheduled for 2, 4, and 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Heading
into the race, Veney is a career-high third in the national standings
following a final-round appearance two weeks ago at the Lucas Oil Series
event at New England Dragway.

“We can’t catch Manzo or Tony Bartone this weekend, but another good showing
will definitely help us solidify third place,” Veney said. “The race is in
August and not October this year, so we’re not likely to run another
all-time best, but it’s time to win again.”

Sudden Impact Changes the Course of the Season for Ross Hoek Motorsports

Holland, MI (July 29, 2011) – The first ever Pro Short Course event in the heart of NASCAR country would be the perfect setting for Ross Hoek and his Allstar Performance, Venom Energy sponsored Ford Ranger to bring home his first podium finish of the 2011 season.   The #21 PRO-Light is currently 4th in points and looking to improve at this terrific venue.  The Dirt Track @ Charlotte Motor Speedway would be the ideal back drop for a couple podium finishes to solidify Ross’ position in the 2011 points battle.

The .8 mile long layout ran on and inside the clay based circle track and included several double jumps, a couple of mogul fields, a rhythm section, and one large jump over a thirty foot gap that was right in front of the grandstands. The track design was very technical and different from traditional TORC layouts.

The first PRO-Light practice session on the purpose built track saw Ross first in line. The Allstar Performance Ford was looking for a few easy laps for the first practice session on this obviously un-tested race track.  Less than 1/3 of the way through Ross’ first lap the truck felt good as it crested the third of 4 jumps on the back straight away then the truck hit the poorly placed 4th jump and things instantly went bad.  The truck basically “cased” the 4th jump, then the rear end bucked sending the front bumper rapidly down into the Charlotte clay.  The truck’s energy was then thrown into a violent end over end spin climaxing with a driver side dead flat landing on the hard packed track surface.  The truck flipped one more time and came to rest on its BF Goodrich tires.

Thanks to his ISP seat and belts, along with his Safety Solutions neck restraint, Ross quickly exited the truck on his own and tried to look over the damage.  Initial inspection looked easy to repair before the next practice session of the day.

Once the PRO-Light was towed back to the transporter, Ross and his crew noticed the engine and transmission were torn from their mounts.  The front suspension damage and broken wheel were easy fixes for a seasoned short course team but the truck had major internal structure damage, there was no way of fixing this at the race track.

Just minutes after the incident Ross Hoek explained what happened.

“I was just trying to take it easy through the double doubles and I was going a speed that couldn’t hurt me,” noted Ross Hoek. “Obviously I was wrong.  That portion of the track really needs to be changed. There’s no flow, no way to race through those 4 jumps.”

USAC officials must have been listening, as the track crew immediately went to work on that portion of the track knocking down the first 3 and removing the 4th jump. By race time, the changes made for ideal racing for all three PRO classes.

With the terminal damage to the race truck, and Ross with a sore foot and hand, the team would spend a rare race weekend watching all the action from the grandstands.

“It was a different way to spend a race weekend,” remarked Ross Hoek. “I really enjoyed the watching the races, but we have a ton of work ahead of us to get the truck ready for the next race. This incident knocks us out of the year end points chase. Now we will focus on race wins, and getting another Crandon World Championship ring.”

Follow a Dream

With its fourth final-round appearance of the season, Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream team climbed to third in the national Top Alcohol Funny Car rankings, behind only yearlong leader Tony Bartone and perennial champ Frank Manzo.

At the Division 1 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at New England Dragway, the team’s home track, Veney tied his career-best by qualifying in the No. 2 spot, behind only Manzo, with a 5.69. Following a close 5.80 to 5.88 win over Wayne Morris and an easy 5.69 win when semifinal opponent Fred Tigges broke, Veney lost the final to Manzo, 5.60 to 5.71. Manzo’s run took the track record from the Permatex/Follow A Dream team, which ran a 5.62 at New England Dragway last year.

“I’m getting a little tired of running Frank Manzo in all these finals, but to be that high in the standings, ahead of all those great teams, is unbelievable,” said driver Todd Veney. “We got as high as fifth at one point last year, and we were fifth earlier this year, but third is the highest this team and I have ever been. Now we just need to turn some of these final-round appearances into wins.”

“Frank’s always tough – there’s a reason he’s won all those championships – but it was a great weekend for our team,” Blake said. “We had friends and family from all over the New England area in our pit, especially Saturday night for eliminations, and it was great to get to the final for them.”

Tim Allison Weekend Update

This past weekend were was at Limaland Motorsports Park. The weather was very hot and there had been no rain so they had the track really watered-over 142,000 gallons of water for Friday night, then there was a major rain storm within 1 hr of start time on the track.  Wow!

We came up two spots short so we did not transfer to the A-main, what a heart breaker!  But thats how tough our series is. We will go get ’em next weekend.

Matt Lennen and 1320 Motorsports

We made the 1000 mile trek down to Palm Beach, FL on the 14th for NSCRA round 3, taking place on the 16th.  This was a “night” race, with qualifying starting around 1pm.  We were out at the track all setup, through tech and ready to go at 10am – leaving us some time to talk with the media guys out there and let them know to keep an eye, and a lens, on us.  Made the first round of qualifying, with a 9.6@117mph – had to let out of it at the 1000ft mark because the car kicked out sideways – this still managed to leave us in the #1 qualifier spot.  We werent sure why the car lost traction at 140mph, but the next 3 RWD cars that ran the same lane all lost control at the same point on the track, so we knew something was up with the track surface.

Talked to some of the track officials and asked them to check it out, they found water coming up through the track surface and we were told it would be cleaned up for the 2nd round.  Unfortunately before the 2nd round began, a huge storm blew through, dumping down several inches of rain over about 2 hours.  The track officials tried to dry everything up, but due to the altitude of the track, ground water levels were now higher than the track surface, and water was continuing to come up through the cracks in the concrete making it unsafe to run on the track.  The event was called due to rain.

We werent leaving Florida empty handed again, and were determined to at least get some decent coverage out of the 18 hour drive there.  We arranged to meet the NSCRA team back at the track for a Wednesday night test and tune.  The plan was to make the first 8 second pass in a True Street trimmed car.  They came out with cameras to take some video footage which will be released along with an article on the car this week on the NSCRA website (www.nscra.com), and we are told they will be posting it to over 100 forums as well.

8’s were in sight, however the officials at Palm Beach International Raceway had done next to zero track prep, as there were only about 4 cars running this test and tune.  The track was cold and slick, but as more proof that we have got the traction issues worked out, still managed to cut several 1.45/1.46 60fts.  Made a total of 5 passes; the first pass out a 9.09@154mph, with a steady misfire and letting out of the throttle a hair up at the 1000ft mark with the car swaying hard due to the slick track – this is a new record time for a “True Street” car, and for a Supra driven by a factory auto transmission.  Second pass out was a 9.19@153mph, with some wheel spin before the 1/8th and easing out of the throttle again to regain traction.  Third pass was a 9.07@154mph – again having to let out of the throttle just a little bit before the 1000ft mark due to hard swaying on the slick track.

The last 2 passes were useless, with track temperatures dropping quickly due to ambient air temp falling and no cars running on the track.  The track was just too slick at that point and wouldnt hold any power.  The end result was setting the bar for the True Street class, a new record for a Supra w/Toyota Auto trans, and we’ve been looking into if this is a new 26″ tire record for Supra’s.

Subaru Road Racing Team Plays Close to Home

Having just completed their longest haul to a race this season – a 6,000-mile round trip from Phoenixville, Pa., to Monterey, Calif., Subaru Road Racing Team co-drivers Andrew Aquilante and Bret Spaude this weekend are racing as close as possible to the team’s home – Millville, New Jersey, a mere 73 miles from their race shop in Phoenixville.

Their 2 ½-hour race on a flat, 2.25-mile configuration of New Jersey Motorsports Park, will be the penultimate event of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season.

The Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) prepares and races a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI 4-door model in the series for Subaru of America, Inc.

Aquilante, Chester Springs, Pa., and Spaude, Bushnell, Fla., are coming off their season’s-best sixth place at Elkhart Lake, Wis., and what could have been another top 10 finish in California had the car not suffered a broken shock absorber.

“This is our home track,” said Joe Aquilante, owner of Phoenix Performance Inc., in Phoenixville, Pa., where the SRRT cars are race-prepared. “We’ve used it for development testing for Subaru so our drivers know the track.”

“The car is getting much faster and handling better as our development progresses. And with that, the drivers need to keep an extra vigil to make sure they don’t get caught up in a contact situations,” Aquilante added. “Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System should be a big help this weekend.”

James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc., noted, “As much as we look forward to every race weekend in the series, this is the one venue which is that little bit more special based on its proximity to our race shop and national corporate office for Subaru.”

Added Han, “This weekend’s weather forecast calls for humid and very warm temps, which will be taxing on both drivers and crew, so minimizing mental errors both on and off the track will be key.  That said, I’m confident in our team’s ability to cope with the challenging conditions and added pressure of performing in front of our ‘home’ crowd.”

Mike Wood on the NX Duramax Dragster

I wish I could tell everyone that the car ran great and we won the race again but no such luck this time around.  We got to the track in Numidia, Pennsylvania on Friday, unloaded the car and displayed it for all the spectators and racers to see, there was a great crowd.  We got a lot of attention and talked to a ton of people.

Saturday morning dawned a beautiful day and we warmed up the engine and tranny to get ready to try our brand new combination.  We had lightened the car, removed the front and rear wings to improve aerodynamics, reprogrammed the nitrous controller to eliminate “all” the diesel smoke and installed the new “Big” fuel pump that had shown on the dyno to make an easy 200 more horsepower than the old one.  As they say in Texas, we were loaded for BEAR!

At 9:30 AM Emily pulled the car into the burnout box and hit the throttle, WOW!  Copious smoke poured off the rear tires as the turbos spooled instantly with no smoke, except the tires.  This was looking good!  She backed up and staged the car and it instantly got on the converter stalling to 4800RPM’s with the turbos pumping out a solid 40 pounds of boost.  The tree flashed and Emily was on her way to the quickest pass of her life, 1.12 60 ft, 3.17 to the 330 mark, then disaster struck.  As the car shifted from low to high gear the fuel pump drive gave up and the motor went silent, Emily coasted through the eighth mile with a 4.94 @ 134MPH…………….

The good news, if there was any, is that the Numidia PA track is at an altitude of 5300 feet.  This usually dictates very poor performance from any internal combustion powered vehicle and it did slow some of the vehicles up to one half of a second.  If this was true with our car then we are looking at 6 second potential at sea level.  Like with most racers, we know what it takes to run a certain ET, a 1.12 60ft time combined with a 3.17 would indicate a mid 4.80 eighth mile and further math indicates the imaginary quarter mile ET to be a sub 7.50 pass.  This gives us hope for the six second zone by the end of this year.

TIM ALLISON WEEKEND NEWS

THIS PAST WEEKEND WE WERE AT ELDORA SPEEDWAY FOR THE KINGS ROYAL WEEKEND.  WE HAD ANOTHER GREAT FIELD OF CARS WITH 38 CARS ON HAND.  WE QUALIFIED 7TH AND THAT GOT US IN THE FOURTH HEAT.  WE STARTED IN THE 3RD ROW AND FINISHED 3RD WITH A TIRE GOING DOWN. THAT GOT US QUALIFIED FOR THE FEATURE, WITH THE INVERSION THAT PUT US ON THE OUTSIDE POLE FOR. WE WOULD TAKE THE LEAD ON THE FIRST LAP AND START TO CHECK OUT AND LEAD UP UNTIL LAP 16 OF 25 LAPS AND THE CAR WAS GETTING LOOSE AND WE ENDED UP FINISHING 6TH OVER ALL IN THE FEATURE ON FRIDAY NIGHT,

ON SATURDAY NIGHT THERE WERE ALSO 38 CARS ON HAND. WE QUALIFIED 21st ON THIS NIGHT.  IT WASN’T A GOOD QUALIFYING TIME, SO NOW WE HAD OUT WORK CUT OUT FOR US THIS NIGHT.   THIS PUT US IN THE 3RD HEAT ON THE FRONT ROW.  WE WON THE HEAT WITH NO PROBLEM.  THIS QUALIFIED FOR THE FEATURE AND WITH THE INVERSION WE WOULD START IN 12TH .WE WOULD FINISH 14TH IN THE FEATURE, NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED BUT OVERALL WE HAD A GOOD WEEKEND. HMR GTO/ JEGS PRO MOD Qualifying and Going Rounds

With Jake Hairston coming aboard this year at Coughlin Brothers Racing, Troy Coughlin has been using the HMR Jeg’s wrapped GTO in the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Series until his new Bickel 68 Camaro is finished.  Troy’s new car will be debuted at the U.S. Nationals and will be powered by a Duttweiler built 504 CID twin turbo 5 inch bore spaced big block Chevy using a Donovan block and CFE billet heads and manifold with Precision Turbo 88MM NHRA Pro Mod  turbos.

Trying to compete in Pro Mod with a small block twin turbo Pro Street car seemed like an impossible task but the Jeg’s team has done an incredible job all season.  Remember that the 377 CID Duttweiler motor equipped GTO is running against 500+ CID blown and turbo entries with NO weight break and is giving up 230 pounds to the 800+ CID nitrous entries.  Troy has qualified at 5 of 7 events running a best ET of 5.965 and 249.16 MPH going to the quarters in Vegas and Bristol and the semis in Atlanta.  The FASTEST small block powered race car in NHRA history, PERIOD!

Clint “The Milkman” Hairston will be taking over the driving duties at the upcoming NMCA Bowling Green Pro Street event August 5-7.  “I’ve only driven the car once this year at the NMCA/NMRA Atlanta race but was happy give up the seat to Troy so he wouldn’t miss any of the NHRA events.  I’m sure I’ll be shaking off some rust at Bowling Green but I know I have a really fast hot rod,” commented Clint.

Hairston Motorsports & Racing would like to give special thanks to Lucas Oil for being our title sponsor this year and also thank our many other loyal sponsors; Pertronix, Duttweiler Performance, Precision Turbo, XS Power, Powermaster, Racepak, Hoosier Tire, K&N, Crower Clutches, Lenco, Comp Cams, Dart, T&D Machine, Scat crankshafts, Hogan Manifolds, Jesel, Strange, Motive Gear, Inland Empire Driveline, SCE Gaskets, Starside Design, Specialty Fasteners, Russell, Brodix and ARP for their continuing support.

Kasey Kahne Racing Update

Saldana wins at Beaver Dam
The World of Outlaws Series competed on Friday night at Cedar Lake Speedway and Saturday night at Beaver Dam in Wisconsin. Saldana posted his fourth win of the season on Saturday at Beaver Dam, while Paul McMahan finished third, Brad Sweet finished fifth and Cody Darrah finished 11th.

-Joey Saldana, driver of the #9 Red Bull/Sage Fruit/ASE Maxim

On Friday night, Saldana qualified third, finished third in his heat, fifth in the dash and eighth in the A Main.

On Saturday, Saldana let out a big breath before crawling out of his Kasey Kahne Racing #9 Red Bull Maxim in the Beaver Dam Raceway victory lane. He had just held off Craig Dollansky to win the Jim Boyd Memorial for his fourth victory of the season, but his first win since early May. Saldana is now within six points of the point’s leader.

“It feels great to be back in victory lane after the past month,” said Saldana, of Brownsburg, Ind. “A good start has kept us in this points battle and if you’re going to beat guys like Donny Schatz and Jason Meyers, you have to be spot on, night after night. We haven’t been doing that lately. It’s been a struggle. It’s easy to lose your confidence out here but this win helps. The high line was good for us and I knew Craig was closing in but I was just patient and held on.”

-Brad Sweet, driver of the #49 Ollie’s Bargain Outlet/Sage Fruit Maxim

Brad Sweet rejoined the World of Outlaws on Friday night and posted an impressive fifth-place finish in the A main after starting from the third position.

On Saturday night, Brad Sweet started off with a 15th-place qualifying effort, but rallied back with a fourth-place finish in his heat. Sweet started the A main in the 15th position and fought his way up to fifth for his second-consecutive top-five finish of the weekend.

-Paul McMahan, driver of the #83 HR Cattle/Roth Motorsports Maxim

On Friday night, McMahan qualified second, finished fifth in his heat, sixth in the dash and 23rd in the A main following a part failure.

On Saturday night, McMahan found himself in position to post his third win of the season. Pole-sitter Brooke Tatnell tried to hold on to the lead but saw McMahan rocket by out of turn four to lead lap one. McMahan opened up considerable advantages as the race wore on but was caught in lapped traffic as the low line bottled up and allowed his teammate, Saldana, to slide past on the outside. McMahan brought home a third-place finish and remains seventh in the point standings.

“We tried a softer tire for the feature and that probably hurt us as the night wore on,” said McMahan, of Nashville, Tenn. “Hats off to the crew, though. They had me up front and this thing was incredibly fast all night long.”

-Cody Darrah, driver of the #91 Great Clips/Sage Fruit/ASE Maxim

Darrah qualified eighth, finished third in his heat and 12th in the A main on Friday night.

On Saturday, Darrah qualified 17th, finished fifth in his heat and 11th in the A main. He remains ninth in the point standings.

Matt Lennen Update

Hello again, wanted to send out another quick update.  It’s been a long month of waiting on parts to trickle in, but we got the last few pieces we were waiting on towards the end of last week.  Got everything back together on the car and made it back out to the track Sunday to test out the new suspension, Weld wheels, and new M/T tires.

The track we ran the car at was mediocre at best, its a small local track, Mason Dixon dragway.  It’s known to be a few tenths slower than some other tracks, and sits around 650ft above sea level.  Temps outside were in the mid 90’s with high humidity.  All of that aside, after a few initial passes just feeling out the suspension, we made 2 full passes, both of which were new bests for the car.

First full pass:

60ft  – 1.44
1/8mi – 6.015 @ 121.18mph
1/4mi – 9.246 @ 151.36mph

Second full pass:

60ft  – 1.42
1/8mi – 5.911 @ 119.70
1/4mi – 9.177 @ 150.23

Tires only spun slightly on the last pass, got the tires a little too hot.  Rear view video of the pass from the gopro can be seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiSiBg8ZQao  – we didnt take any pictures as this was just a quick test day.  More videos posted from other people can be seen at
