Four-Wide Nationals Prove Daunting for Toyota Top Fuel Dragsters
CONCORD, N.C. (May 1, 2022) – The first race for defending Funny Car Champion Ron Capps behind the wheel of the new GR Supra resulted in a final-round appearance in the four-wide nationals at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. Capps would finish in the third position and ultimately take semi-final points. The Toyota Top Fuel dragsters of Justin Ashley and Doug Kalitta made it to the second round, but in a day full of upset winners, their respective days ended in round two.

What can you say about your first race weekend in the GR Supra Funny Car?
“Close to being a dream weekend, but I can’t thank Toyota enough for moving up the chance to run this GR Supra body. To be able to do this at four-wide and really have the data from everybody and really my first time driving the GR Supra was when we went out there in Q1 and went right down the track, which was – I probably gave Guido (crew chief) the biggest hug I’ve ever given him. I was so relieved and so happy. Having Slugger (Labbe, TGRNA) and all the guys that worked so hard to make this happen – just ecstatic really. A lot of hard work had to come together for us to be here and do this. Everyone from the design of the car, the paint scheme, but now we get out other Supra body and we’ll be raring to go for Richmond and we can start getting after it.”

How did the win in round one help your team continue to learn and move forward?
“We’ve just been struggling for whatever reason and stupid little things happen and some things are out of our control, but nonetheless, don’t worry about the past. We’re looking into the future. It would be a good day to win here at zMax for Toyota Gazoo Racing North America, DHL, CMR and all of our sponsors that are here this weekend. I was ready and I was third off the line and I thought I wasn’t that late. It’s tough out here right now in Funny Car.”
