Dominic Scelzi Aiming for Trophy Cup Title During Banner Season

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2021) – Dominic Scelzi is hoping for a career-best run during the upcoming Trophy Cup to align with his career-best season.

Scelzi has been on a tear all year and in contention during nearly every race he’s tackled, amassing a career-best 21 feature victories during 63 races. He is hopeful that level of success continues this weekend during one of his favorite events.

Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., hosts the 27thannual Trophy Cup this Thursday through Saturday.

“This is right up there with a World of Outlaws win for me,” he said. “The three big moments of my career would be winning the Peter Murphy Classic, the Trophy Cup and a World of Outlaws race. We were able to get the Peter Murphy Classic this year. We’ve had strong runs with the Outlaws and we’ve been close at Trophy Cup before. This is the best, most realistic shot I’ve had in my life.”

Six of Scelzi’s feature victories this year have occurred at Thunderbowl Raceway. What is even more impressive is that Scelzi has only visited the track a half dozen times in 2021, meaning he’s reached Victory Lane every time. That is an added confidence boost entering the marquee event.

“There’s a big difference in being fast, being good and being there at the end of it,” he said. “I grew up watching guys like Brad Sweet and Brent Kaeding walk around as the event champion. I’ve seen guys like Roger Crockett walk away in defeat after great weekends. I’ve been on the losing side more than I’d like to count, but it just feels different this year. The biggest thing is you can’t overthink it. I want to win this race more than anything. I’m just rolling in there like any weekend and hopefully can do the same job as any other weekend.”

While Scelzi will continue to chase feature triumphs all weekend, his biggest goal is to be crowned event champion by earning the most points throughout the three-day spectacle.

“If I didn’t win another race all year or even the next six months but get to walk away with the Trophy Cup championship I’d be overjoyed,” he said. “It’s something some guys try their whole careers to achieve and they aren’t able to cross that off their list. This race fits me. Until this year I wasn’t a guy who could knock off a bunch of wins. We’ve proven we are consistent and fast, especially at Thunderbowl. You can’t bang the boards every lap. You have to be able to move around the track and race yourself. I feel like we’re going into Trophy Cup with the best mindset ever.”
