Giovanni Scelzi Earns Best Result of Season During Asparagus Cup at Stockton Dirt Track

Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (April 23, 2018) – Giovanni Scelzi posted his best finish of the season on Saturday at the Stockton Dirt Track, where he captured a runner-up result during the Asparagus Cup.

The event began with Scelzi guiding his family owned, Roth Motorsports sponsored sprint car to the second quickest qualifying time. He then advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race to earn a spot in the dash, which he won after starting on the pole.

“We timed well and had a good heat race and dash,” he said. “Everything went really well and we had a beautiful track. It was slick and wide with a bottom and top.”

Scelzi powered into the lead early in the main event.

“I led for the first 10 laps,” he said. “I got racing with Willie Croft. Then James McFadden drove by both of us. Willie ended up having an incident with a lapped car so we finished second. I feel good about it. I think we just got beat by a better race car.”

The second-place finish marked Scelzi’s third straight top five in his family sprint car. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/WoNkoobA4v8.

The weekend began the previous night when Scelzi drove Paul Silva’s No. 57 sprint car sponsored by Richard and Jennifer Marshall’s Priority Aviation Services at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., during a King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series race. Scelzi qualified second quickest, finished sixth in a heat race and won the B Main to lock into the seventh starting position for the A Main.

“We got our qualifying time back so that helped us start in a decent position,” he said. “We were running seventh for the first few laps before I hit a hole and almost turned over. I fell back to 12th or 13 th. Then we had a restart and when I went to the bottom a guy drove into me and it turned me over.”

The incident midway through the race ended the night early for Scelzi, who was credited with a 21st-place finish. Here is a link to watch the race: https://youtu.be/j6QPSCycv9s.

This week presents a new opportunity for Scelzi, who will make his season debut in the Bernie Stuebgen owned, Indy Race Parts backed No. 71 this Friday and Saturday at Mansfield Motor Speedway in Mansfield, Ohio, during the $100,000-to-win Sprint Car World Championship.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Scelzi said. “There’s a test on Thursday evening so hopefully we’ll get everything comfortable to get ready for the races.”
