LOGANO WINS TALLADEGA & ADVANCES TO THE ROUND OF 8!
TALLADEGA, Ala., October 25, 2016 – Joey Logano takes back-to-back October wins at Talladega Superspeedway and advances to the third round of the Chase. Roush Yates Engines in partnership with Ford Performance provided the Ford FR9 V8 winning engine that powered the No. 22 to victory lane in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Hellmann’s 500.
Logano, driver of the Team Penske No. 22 made an impressive statement by winning his second fall Chase race at the legendary Talladega Superspeedway.
“I think it was really Ford won today,” said Roger Penske, Owner of Team Penske. “The way the cars ran there was no question that Roush Yates gave us some strong motors. I think we had great cars.”
The No. 22 showed persistence and patience was the winning formula during the Hellmann’s 500. Logano and his Ford Fusion battled back after an early pit stop issue on lap 67 with brilliant driving and side drafting to get back on the lead lap and in contention for the lead.
The Fords of Logano from Team Penske and Brian Scott, No. 44 of Richard Petty Motorsports, lined up side-by-side to take the green flag during the overtime session. Logano leveraged the Roush Yates Engines’ horsepower from the Ford FR9 V8 race engine and maintained the lead off the long tri-oval and down the front stretch to find himself in victory circle.
Scott would bring home his first second place finish in a NASCAR Sprint Cup race for Richard Petty Motorsports while Ricky Stenhouse Jr., No. 17 of Roush Fenway Racing finished 5th and Aric Almirola, No. 43 finished 8th.
Five different Fords led a total of 157 out of the 192 laps. Brad Keselowski No. 2 and Logano ran very strong, leading 135 laps while Roush Fenway Racing teammates, Greg Biffle No. 16 and Stenhouse Jr. combined for 19 laps and Ryan Blaney No. 21 of the Wood Brothers Racing would round out the group.
“Congratulations to Joey, Team Penske and Ford Performance,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “Winning at Talladega is so special and to finish 1–2 is just incredible. “The entire team has been working hard and the Ford FR9 race engine is very well suited for this type of track and racing. We are so proud to be moving on in the Chase.”
Next week the Chase moves onto Martinsville and Logano will be one of eight in the third round for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.
