Four Chevy Camaro Z/28.Rs on Austin entry list

DETROIT (Sept. 15, 2015) – Four Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R race cars head deep in the heart of Texas this weekend in pursuit of the manufacturer’s first Grand Sport (GS) championship in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. Circuit of The Americas plays host to the ninth round of this year’s 10-race championship with the Bowtie Brand holding a six-point lead.

Stevenson Motorsports and Mantella Autosport each have two Camaro Z/28.Rs on the entry list. Not only will the four try and put the Camaro brand on the podium at COTA for the first time, there are Team and Driver championships at stake.

“The championship fight in GS has grown incredibly close over the last two events,” said Jim Lutz, Chevrolet Program Manager for the Camaro Z/28.R. “Even with a BoP that didn’t favor us at VIR, our partners at Stevenson Motorsports played the right strategy and scored valuable points. We will need similar good fortune and execution to keep our points lead heading into the final race at Road Atlanta.”

Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis in the No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro Z/28.R lead the GS Driver standings with three victories earlier in the season. Coming off a third-place finish in the most recent round at Virginia International Raceway, the Davis/Liddell duo leads by 10 points; there are 70 available points remaining over the final two races.

The No. 6 Camaro won at Sebring (where they assumed the points lead), Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Watkins Glen.

Lawson Aschenbach and Matt Bell in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro Z/28.R were runners-up at VIR to move back into third position in points. They have two runner-up finishes – VIR and Sebring – and a third-place finish at Daytona to open the season.

Mantella Autosport’s Martin Barkey and Kyle Marcelli are looking to improve on their seventh-place points standing following a fifth-place finish at VIR in their No. 80 MBRP/Praxair/The Sport Lab Camaro Z/28.R. Team owner Anthony Mantella and Mark Wilkins return in their No. 8 Gulf/Spyder Camaro Z/28.R.

The Camaro Z/28.R won five times during its 2014 debut season. It is based on the road-going Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, and the two share considerable traits:
Engine and displacement (7.0-liter V-8, 427 cubic inches)
Front splitter and rear spoiler with wickerbill
Hood extractor vent
Rockers, wheel-house extension and front tire deflectors
Belly pan
