Greg Anderson Wins Third Race of 2012 in All-Summit Atlanta Final

Greg Anderson Wins Third Race of 2012 in All-Summit Atlanta Final

Commerce, Ga., May 6, 2012 – Greg Anderson completed a racer’s dream on Sunday, capturing the Pro Stock title at his primary sponsor’s race, the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga.  Starting from the third position, he defeated Greg Stanfield, Steve Kent and Allen Johnson in the early rounds before squaring off against his teammate and No. 1 qualifier Jason Line in a repeat of last year’s final round.

Running without lane choice and facing a quicker opponent, Anderson knew he would need to gain an edge in order to give himself a chance at his third win of the season. Attacking the starting line, he left five hundredths of a second ahead and never looked back, using a 6.649-second, 208.26 mph run to hold off his stable mate’s 6.618-second, 209.62 mph pass.  This was Anderson’s 73rd win of his career, third of the 2012 season and fourth at Atlanta Dragway.

“I feel like the luckiest guy out here today, because this was not a typical win for this Summit Racing team,” said Anderson.  “I didn’t have the best car, and I didn’t have my best day of driving, but we kept digging, working to get better with every run.  As a result, we made fewer mistakes than our competition, and made it to the final against our teammate, which is, of course, the ideal scenario at your sponsor’s race.

“I’m not sure what happened to Jason in the final, but he apparently made a mistake, allowing me to get a jump at the starting line.  My car then made a very nice run, and I was able to hold him off.  For whatever reason, the good Lord was shining on me today.  I am very proud to have Summit Racing Equipment on the side of our car, and hope we made them proud today.”

Anderson was quick to credit the KB Racing team and its owner for the successful weekend.  In one of the sport’s most competitive classes, they placed three cars in the top four positions in qualifying, and delivered an equally impressive performance on race day, with all three advancing to the semifinals before the all-Summit Racing championship round.  In addition, he acknowledged the companies whose participation allows the team to compete at such a high level.

“Obviously, as a team we are very happy with today’s results, putting three cars in the semifinals and two in the final,” said Anderson.  “At a Summit event, it just doesn’t get any better than that.  The way this team is right now, if one car has an off race, we still have two that can go rounds and win races.  That doesn’t happen very often with multicar teams, but this truly is one team with three cars, with everyone rowing the boat in the same direction.

“That is the one thing about this team of which I am proudest, and it all goes back to the people on this crew, and our team owner Ken Black.  He is working so hard at his rehabilitation in order to get back out here with us that we just want to keep digging deeper to make him proud.  This is a tough, tough class, one where anyone can win on a given weekend, so we feel fortunate to have won as many as we have so far this season.

“We also couldn’t do this without the support of several outstanding companies, including Summit Racing Equipment, Chevrolet, Red Line Oil, Cometic Gaskets, Mac Tools, PAC Valve Springs, Wilson Manifolds, Diamond Pistons, K&N Filters, Speed Dawg Shift Knobs and many others.  Their involvement with our team makes this all possible, and I’m glad we were able to take them back to the winner’s circle today.

“We have a weekend at home before heading to Topeka and a lot of work to be done before then.  The entire team will be driving back to North Carolina tonight and will be back at the shop tomorrow, getting ready for the next race as well as working on our new Camaro. Somewhere in there we’ll take a little time to enjoy this win, but our focus has already turned towards getting the next one.”

Swindell Dominates, Schatz Charges at Eldora Speedway

The duo swap the World of Outlaws points lead for the fifth consecutive race

ROSSBURG, Ohio – May 5, 2012 – Sammy Swindell and Donny Schatz are putting together one of the most intense championship battles in World of Outlaws history.
There have been eight lead changes in the standings in 15 events this season. Saturday was no different as Swindell led all 30 laps to claim Night 2 of the Outlaw Thunder presented by Goodyear at Eldora Speedway, marking the fifth consecutive race that the championship standings have swapped between the duo.

“If you’re looking at the points, we could have a big lead if we just hadn’t gotten in a couple of those crashes,” said Swindell, who has crashed twice while running in the top five this season. “But it’s part of it and we keep coming back.”

Swindell has been victorious in four of the last eight events, including a dominant performance on Saturday as the veteran picked up his 19     th career World of Outlaws win at Eldora Speedway. It also pushed him back into the points lead by 11 over Schatz.

After qualifying seventh quickest, Swindell drove from third to second in both his heat race and the dash. He then rocketed to the lead at the start of the feature, which went caution free for 24 laps before Jason Sides’ flat left rear tire brought out a yellow flag.

“The way the car was rolling through there I knew that if somebody was faster, they’d have to be just really awesome because this thing was almost on rails,” Swindell said. “It was just stuck down so hard I could just drive around there like I’m driving down the freeway.”

The caution eliminated nearly a straightaway lead for Swindell, who took little time in reestablishing a sizeable advantage. However, Kraig Kinser sustained a flat left rear tire with two laps remaining to bring out the final caution of the race.

Joey Saldana, who ran second for most of the race, began to slow a couple of laps before the caution because of an engine issue. Swindell chose the outside lane on the double-file restart and Saldana’s car was slow to take off, bogging the inside lane on the start and dropping him to sixth by turn one.

Swindell sailed to the win as Dale Blaney used the late cautions to pick up a pair of positions.

“We were probably going to run fourth until those last couple of yellows,” he said after finishing second. “They kind of helped us out. Sometimes yellows can help or hurt, and tonight they helped a little bit.

“(Swindell) was awful good all night long. He drove away from us early. He was definitely a better car than us and it would have took a little bit of problem from him for us to get up to him. I just wasn’t good enough from the center off to get a run on guys to slide them.”

Craig Dollansky also capitalized on the two cautions to drive from sixth to third in the final five laps.

“My car got good as the race wore on,” he said. “Late in the race was when my car felt the best.

“Any time you can come out with a top three with this group of teams here, it’s a pretty good night.”

David Gravel, who set fast time for the second night in a row, finished fourth and Daryn Pittman drove from 11th to round out the top five.

Schatz overcame an early issue of his own and rebounded in the feature. After advancing from eighth to third in the Last Chance Showdown to earn a transfer, Schatz started the main event in 24th. He restarted 14th on the caution with six laps remaining and then restarted ninth on the green-white-checker.

Schatz finished sixth and he earned the KSE Hard Charger Award for a series-best third time this season.

Saldana placed seventh, Steve Kinser was eighth, Greg Wilson ended ninth and Friday night winner Chad Kemenah rallied from 22nd to conclude the top 10.

Paul McMahan won a heat race and the dash, and Trey Starks, Steve Kinser and Jac Haudenschild earned heat wins. Tony Stewart claimed the Last Chance Showdown.

Event:  32nd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals

Location: Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Georgia

Day/Date: Saturday, May 5, 2012

After posting a quick time of 6.625-seconds with a top speed of 208.62 mph on Friday, Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team headed into the second day of qualifying at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. looking to better their performance and put themselves in a good position for Sunday’s final eliminations.  Hindering their efforts were the increased temperatures at Atlanta Dragway, which saw the racing surface reach temperatures exceeding 130 degrees.

Even so, Anderson was able to come close to matching his previous best, clocking a 6.629-second time, which was third-quickest for the morning session and cemented his third-place starting position for race day.  Although the highly competitive racer was disappointed to have not run better, he still found reason to be optimistic heading into his first round match-up with Greg Stanfield about his chances for a fourth Peach State win.

“We didn’t really make the type of runs we were hoping for today, but we’re still in a good position for Sunday,” said Anderson.  “With today’s higher temperatures we knew it would be tough, and although our Summit Racing Pontiac was able to make that 6.62 pass this morning, it wasn’t really a good run.

“We know the car is capable of running as well as Jason’s (Summit Racing teammate Line, who qualified No. 1), and it’s up to us to figure out what it needs.  We have our work cut out for us tonight and tomorrow morning, going over all our notes to see what we can do to step up.  The answer is in there somewhere – it’s just up to us to find it, and I’m confident we will, allowing us to come out tomorrow and have a long and successful race day.”

Day/Date: Saturday, May 5, 2012

Jason Line and the Summit Racing team continued their run of strong qualifying performances on Saturday, capturing the No. 1 qualifying position for Sunday’s final eliminations of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga.  After slotting himself atop the field with his 6.612-second, 208.68 mph pass on Friday evening, Line was never headed for the remainder of qualifying, improving to a 6.607-second time and 209.04 mph top speed on Saturday morning before closing with a 6.629-second, 208.39 mph run on the 133 degree Atlanta Dragway track in the fourth and final session.

This is the 28th No. 1 qualifying performance of Line’s career, fourth of the season and first at Atlanta Dragway.  As he prepared for his first round encounter with No. 16 qualifier and fellow Minnesota native Warren Johnson, he was quick to acknowledge the efforts of those who had contributed to his running so well in the adverse conditions as well as needling one of the sport’s announcers.  Finally, he looked to turn his success in qualifying into round wins on Sunday, allowing him to successfully defend his title from this race a year ago.

“The racetrack was certainly hotter today, but the NHRA did a nice job of prepping it because it was phenomenal considering the conditions,” said Line.  “Realizing we’ll be running in something similar tomorrow, we went out in the last session looking to make a nice, safe run and came up with that 6.62, so we feel really good going into race day.

“My Summit Racing crew has done a great job so far this weekend, just as they have all year – who knows, maybe Mike Dunn will finally give us the Full Throttle Hard Working Crew award!   Now it’s up to me to hold up my end of the deal and maintain the intensity that it takes to be the best in this class.  I feel good about things this weekend, so hopefully this will be a good turnaround for us – it certainly couldn’t come at a better time or place.”

Kemenah Dodges the Carnage to Claim Victory at Eldora

Kemenah Dodges the Carnage to Claim Victory at Eldora
The Ohio native picks up his first World of Outlaws win since 2009

ROSSBURG, Ohio – May 4, 2012 – There had to be a full moon hiding behind the incoming storm Friday night at Eldora Speedway.
A variety of issues plagued drivers running in the top five and a wild crash eliminated four competitors in the top 10 with seven laps remaining on Night 1 of the Outlaw Thunder presented by Goodyear.

It all worked in favor of Ohio native Chad Kemenah, who survived the melee to record his first World of Outlaws victory since 2009.

“We got lucky there,” he said after an emotional appearance in Victory Lane. “You don’t want to win like that, but we’ve given some away so I’m not complaining. A win is a win and they pay the same.

“When you’re this close to home it makes it that much better. It’s only an hour and a half to home, so this is kinda like home to me.”

As lightning loomed in the distance, the feature began with a blazing start. Polesitter Jac Haudenschild was easily the quickest in the field and he proved it by maintaining a sizeable lead against runner-up Steve Kinser, who owns a series-best 35 World of Outlaws feature wins at the high-banked, half-mile oval.

After a caution on lap three for Randy Hannagan’s stalled car on the frontstretch, Haudenschild quickly powered to a straightaway advantage as he entered traffic on lap eight. However, a red flag for Stevie Smith, who flipped in turn two on lap 17, erased more than a three-second lead for Haudenschild.

That mattered little as he again drove to a large lead only to have the caution flag wave on lap 18 because debris shattered one of the lights on the frontstretch. The race resumed with Haudenschild setting a blistering pace as David Gravel, Sammy Swindell and Tim Shaffer battled in a thrilling three-wide race for fifth place.

With 10 laps remaining, things became hectic. While running second, Kinser’s left rear tire gave way in turn four. He returned from the pits at the last minute and restarted 14th.

Haudenschild again rocketed to the front as Swindell and Kerry Madsen traded slide jobs for fourth place for a trio of laps. On lap 24, Swindell brought out a caution while running fifth because of a left rear tire issue.

During the caution, Haudenschild gave up the lead and pulled to the pits because he ran out of fuel. That provided second-running Dale Blaney the top spot, but a lap later – while the race was still under caution – Blaney drove into the pits because of a flat tire.

That moved Gravel into the lead, which was also short-lived. Gravel chose the outside lane for the double-file restart with Madsen lining up inside. The two viscously collided on the bottom in turn one, sending both flipping up the track.

Craig Dollansky and Tim Shaffer, who were competing for top-five positions, had nowhere to go and smashed into the mess. Paul McMahan was also caught up in the incident, which forced all five cars to the pits for the remainder of the night and left debris scattered across turns one and two.

That also advanced Kemenah to the lead, which he didn’t relinquish en route to a victory at his favorite track.

“I could see there was going to be a wreck going in there,” he said after leading the final seven laps. “I just aimed for the bottom. I figured they were going to the outside.

“Any time you get an opportunity like that, you’ve just got to seize the moment and go get it.”

Donny Schatz drove from 12th to earn the runner-up position, which moved him into the World of Outlaws championship standings lead by one point over Swindell.

“There were a lot of things going on and I’m glad we weren’t in it,” Schatz said. “We had a so-so car; it wasn’t the greatest. We were just kinda riding around and trying to be cautious and stay out of trouble.”

Kinser rebounded to round out the podium as he held off a late charge from 13th-starter Cody Darrah to claim third place.

“Just one of those nights,” Kinser said. “I’m awful lucky after having a flat tire there to miss everything and to finish third.”

Daryn Pittman, who started 11th, finished fifth and Swindell was sixth. NASCAR star Tony Stewart, who owns Eldora Speedway, charged from 17     th to seventh and Joey Saldana placed eighth. Kraig Kinser earned the KSE Hard Charger Award after piloting from 20th to ninth and Cap Henry moved from 19th to round out the top 10.

Gravel set quick time in qualifying with a lap of 13.228 seconds before Blaney, Dollansky, Madsen and Swindell each won a heat race. Kraig Kinser led all 12 laps to win the Last Chance Showdown.

The World of Outlaws concludes the Outlaw Thunder presented by Goodyear at Eldora Speedway on Saturday.

Event:  32nd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals

Location: Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Georgia

Day/Date: Friday, May 4, 2012

Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson got off to a good start on Friday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. posting the third-quickest run in each of the two sessions.  After opening with a 6.647-second, 208.17 mph pass, he picked up the pace on his second attempt, improving to a 6.625-second elapsed time and a top speed of 208.62 mph.

Having established a strong baseline for his Atlanta Dragway tune-up, Anderson looked forward to the final two sessions on Saturday, where he hoped to further improve his standing for Sunday’s final eliminations.

“My Summit Racing Pontiac made two solid runs today,” said Anderson.  “Of course, we always want to be faster, but we have a good tuning base for tomorrow.  I do feel like the morning session will be the best, so it was important to put it through the goal posts twice today, giving us a good direction with the tune-up.  I think we’re close, and hopefully we’ll chisel on her a little bit overnight and get even closer yet.

“Obviously, Jason’s (teammate and provisional No. 1 qualifier Line) car is fast again and it looks like Ronnie’s (Humphrey in the Genuine Hot Rod Hardware Pontiac, who currently sits 4th) is in the ball park, giving us three cars in the top four today.  Hopefully, tomorrow we can come out and make it three out of three.”

Day/Date: Friday, May 4, 2012

Jason Line and the Summit Racing team experienced both ends of the competitive spectrum during the opening day of qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, Ga.  After posting impressive numbers early in his first attempt at Atlanta Dragway, Line was suddenly slowed by a mechanical malfunction, one that required the team to swap motors in the brief period between rounds.

Undaunted, the entire KB Racing crew jumped into action, finishing the exchange and rolling their car into the staging lanes with moments to spare.  Their hard work was rewarded a few minutes later when Line powered through the quarter mile in 6.612 seconds with a top speed of 208.68 mph to claim the provisional No. 1 position.

“We had some problems on our first run and damaged the engine, so we had to change it before the second session,” said Line.  “We didn’t even have time to start the thing before we went to the lanes, so I think there’s some room left.  My hat’s off to our engine guys because we were able to just plug an engine in from under the bench and go to the pole.  It’s a very reassuring feeling.

“My Summit Racing Pontiac is really, really good, and made a nice run tonight.  Again, we are missing a little bit, but I think it’s more tune up than anything else.  The car did a great job, we were good enough to be on the pole tonight, so I’m pretty happy.

“AJ (Allen Johnson, who held the top position after the opening session) is tough to beat, especially in these conditions, and he’s right there, with (Mike) Edwards and Greg (teammate Anderson) all capable of getting the job done.  It feels good to be No. 1 tonight, but with a morning session tomorrow, it’s not over, so we’re ready to do whatever is necessary to stay on top.”

After Short Week, Anderson Looks for a Long Race Day in Atlanta

After Short Week, Anderson Looks for a Long Race Day in Atlanta

Mooresville, N.C., May 2, 2012 – For the second time in 2012, teams in the NHRA’s Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will be competing on consecutive weekends, heading directly from Houston, Tex. to Commerce, Ga. for the Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals.  Although the timeframe may be compressed, the workload remains the same, and unlike their brethren in other racing series who simply exchange race cars from the fleet at their disposal, the straight-liners must work with the single chassis that they use for the entire season, performing between-race maintenance as well as any necessary repairs or modifications.

In the case of Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team, the past four days have included nearly 3,000 miles of travel by the team’s twin transporters and Sunday night flights by the remainder of the crew to maximize their time at the shop.  However, the current Pro Stock championship points leader believes the stress of this very hectic week is balanced by the ability to quickly return to competition, whether to extend a run of strong performances or make up for a less than stellar showing.

“This was a very busy week for the Summit Racing team, busier than normal” said Anderson.  “The crew flew home on Sunday night after the race, while one of our transporters came straight home with both race cars so we could work on them, getting them as ship shape as we can for this weekend.

“At the same time our other truck went north to RJ Race Cars in Illinois to pick up our first Camaro, getting back on Wednesday with just enough time to unpack and reload for Atlanta. We’re really eager to see our Camaros and start this exciting new chapter.  We’re a little disappointed we couldn’t bring them out here at the Summit race, but there just wasn’t enough time.  Besides, we didn’t want to shake down a brand new car at such an important race.

“It’s certainly been a crazy few days, but if it was up to me I would race every weekend.  When you’re doing well, you naturally want to keep going, while if you have an off race, as we did in Houston, you want to get back to the track as quickly as you can to redeem yourself.  Either way, we’re ready to get back at it in Atlanta.”

With a career elimination-round win percentage of almost 75%, Atlanta Dragway, site of this weekend’s race, understandably ranks high on Anderson’s list of favorite tracks.  Located one hour north of the city in the town of Commerce, it has witnessed much of the growth of his Pro Stock career, starting as a crew chief for a Georgia-based legend to his current status as one of the category’s all-time best racers.  This weekend, he looks to further his reputation and put smiles on the faces of some very important people by scoring his fourth win in the Peach State.

“Naturally, as a Summit race, this is a big event for our entire team,” said Anderson. “Fortunately, we have historically done well at Atlanta Dragway, including putting both Summit cars in the final there a year ago.  It’s one of the tracks that is very friendly to our team so it’s a perfect one to have our sponsor’s name on and we naturally enjoy going there.

“It has also been a very good track for me personally.  People seem to forget that for many years I came here as a crew member and crew chief on Warren Johnson’s car, and we made a lot of runs down this track with more than our share of success.  That gave me an invaluable amount of experience on how to tune a car here, which I believe has played a role in my doing so well here with the KB Racing team.

“We’re excited heading into this weekend.  Jason and I will start off by going to the Coca-Cola Full Throttle Champions’ dinner on Wednesday night, which is always a great time, and then we head up to Atlanta Dragway where we’ll get to see many of our friends from Summit.  We’ve had a very productive week, so I’m confident we’re going to have a good product for this weekend.  I expect us to have a great race with a good chance of winning – after all, our primary goal is to have that Summit Racing executive hand us the Wally at the top end and then join us in the winner’s circle on Sunday night, so we’re going to do everything we can to make it happen.”

Line Set to Welcome Special Atlanta Guest in Style

Line Set to Welcome Special Atlanta Guest in Style

Mooresville, N.C., May 2, 2012 – Celebrity guests are a common occurrence at motorsports events around the world.  From singing the national anthem and being race dignitaries to simply coming the races as invitees of their favorite team, there is always someone of note in attendance when two or four-wheeled competition is involved.

For example, Jason Line and the Summit Racing team are looking forward to welcoming a special guest at this weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Southern NHRA Nationals in Atlanta, Ga.  Although he may not be a household name, his presence is extremely important to the reigning Full Throttle champion, as for the last two years Command Sergeant Major William “Buck” O’Neal has welcomed Line and the rest of the Team Summit contingent during their visits to Ramstein Air Force base in Germany.  This weekend, Line looks to return the favor, as Command Sergeant Major O’Neal and his father will be at Atlanta Dragway all weekend as guests of Summit Racing Equipment.

“The last two years during our trips to Ramstein Air Force base, Command Sergeant Major O’Neal would always make a point of coming out to welcome us,” recalled Line.  “During our conversations he would tell us what big drag racing fans both he and his father were, and how he couldn’t wait to return home and take his dad to the races.  Naturally, we told him to let us know once he came back, because we would be glad to set him up with a VIP experience.  After all, this is a man who has dedicated his life to the service of our country, so it’s the least we could do.

“Fortunately, he has now returned stateside, and before he heads to his next posting, both he and his father are going to be the special guests of Summit Racing this weekend in Atlanta.  I’m looking forward to seeing him again as well as meeting his father and returning the hospitality he showed us in Germany, giving them an in-depth look into the world of NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing.  It will be good to have them at the track with us and I hope to be able to have them join us in the winner’s circle on Sunday night.”

For Line to achieve his goal of celebrating with the O’Neals on Sunday, he will need to duplicate his Atlanta Dragway performance of a year ago, when he defeated KB Racing teammate Greg Anderson in the final round.  However, standing in his way will be another tough Pro Stock field and unusually warm temperatures which will rob the naturally aspirated engines of valuable horsepower and require an entirely different set-up.  Fortunately, seemingly in his corner is the Peach State speed plant, where he has one win in three final round appearances and seven starts in the top four positions in his previous eight races.

“Last year our Summit Racing team had a really good day in Atlanta, putting both cars in the final, and I was fortunate enough to come out on top,” said Line.  “I think we’re ready to do something good this weekend, which means we’ll have to do a better job than we did last week in Houston.  The conditions there were similar to what is forecast for this weekend, so hopefully we learned a few things about our hot weather tune-up that we’ll be able to use in Atlanta.

“Historically this has been a good track for us, which is something we’d like to continue this weekend.  It’s always a confidence booster to go back to a place where you’ve had success in the past, and the fact that it is a Summit race just makes it that much better.  We have plenty of reasons to do well, so motivation will not be an issue, and we have all the parts and pieces we need to get the job done.   Therefore, it all comes down to execution, and I am confident we have the people in place to make the difference.”

Tim Allison Racing

This past weekend we did get to race as it was calling for rain.  It held off and it was a little chilly, but we got the first race in the books for 2012.  We had a great field of cars again and the track was really nice early on.   It did dry out as the night went on.   Again the draw was not in our favor and we drew the 2nd to last row in the 3rd heat.  We ended up and finished 4th and that got us qualified for the feature.  The inversion was a 6 so that put us starting in the 12th position on a pretty much one lane track- up against the wall,  which is where we like to run!  The race started and we avoided a couple of spins and fell back to 16th.  By the end of the feature we worked our way back up to 8th.  A good solid night for the team for our first night out! We are off next weekend but on the following weekend May 11th we have a make up feature for the rained-out race from last weekend for the NRA series plus another complete program that same night s plus another complete program that same night

Subaru Road Racing Team Reaches Podium at Miami GRAND-AM Race
– Team Driver Bret Spaude Sets GS Class Qualifying Record in #35 WRX STI –

Phoenixville, PA. – April 28, 2012 – Teammates Andrew Aquilante and Bret Spaude gave the Subaru Road Racing Team (SRRT) a front row start and achieved a third place finish Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The two-hour, 30-minute sprint race served as the third round of the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Championship.

Spaude, of Bushnell, Fla., qualified the #35 SRRT WRX STI on the front row for the race comprising a massive 66-car starting grid encompassing two car classes, and kept his STI in the lead for 19 laps around the 2.3-mile combination NASCAR-style banked oval plus flat infield road course located just south of Miami, Fla.

On lap 30 of 82, Spaude handed off driving duties, while running in a comfortable 10th place, over to teammate Andrew Aquilante of Chester Springs, Pa., who brought the distinctive #35 Subaru to the checkered flag in 3rd place after making numerous exciting on-track maneuvers.

“The varying weather conditions throughout the race posed a challenge, but our car performed flawlessly all weekend plus our pit stop strategy proved to be the right one,” said SRRT owner Joe Aquilante, principal of Phoenix Performance in Phoenixville, Pa., where the SRRT Subaru is prepped and maintained.  “We can’t wait for the next round which is our home race at Millville [in New Jersey].”

Added team driver Bret Spaude, “I enjoyed a great first stint and didn’t feel much of any pressure [from the competitors] from behind in the wet [conditions].  Our STI really stuck well in the corners, and I was able to keep the lead right up to my first pit stop.  After handing off the car to my teammate, AJ [Aquilante] picked up right where I left off and made some incredible passes to help us get onto the podium.”

Aquilante and Spaude were among 67 cars entered in two classes in GRAND-AM Road Racing’s largest participatory series.

“We’re pleased to take away a podium finish from the Homestead round, and our team has been working hard in tapping the performance potential of our Subaru WRX STI,” remarked James Han, motorsports marketing manager for Subaru of America, Inc.  “Both Bret and Andrew put in some great drives under difficult and changing weather conditions while maneuvering through heavy traffic.  We’ll build on this result for our next race in two weeks.”

The race-prepped #35 SRRT 4-door WRX STI is developed to compete against rival teams fielding cars producing over 400 horsepower.

The next race, the B+ Heroes 200, will be May 11-13 at New Jersey Motorsports Park, near Millville, NJ, and relatively nearby both the team’s race shop location and corporate headquarters for Subaru of America, Inc.

Line Misses by an Eyelash in Houston Quarterfinals

Line Misses by an Eyelash in Houston Quarterfinals

Event:  25th annual NHRA Spring Nationals

Location: Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown, Tex.

Day/Date: Sunday, April 29, 2012

Having been one of the quickest and most consistent cars throughout qualifying, Summit Racing driver Jason Line entered Sunday’s final eliminations of the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Tex. cautiously optimistic about his chances of scoring his second win of the 2012 season.  Despite the warmer temperatures and higher humidity that engulfed Royal Purple Raceway on race day, the second-qualified Line and his KB Racing team responded well, posting the third-quickest elapsed time of the opening stanza at 6.571-seconds to defeat Rickie Jones.

In the second round against veteran Mike Edwards, Line was able to deliver the quickest elapsed time of that round, covering the quarter-mile in 6.591-seconds with a top speed of 210.50 mph.  Unfortunately, it fell an immeasurable eight thousandths of a second shy of overcoming his rival’s starting line edge and 6.603-second, 209.79 mph run putting a premature end to the reigning Full Throttle champion’s day.

“As close as the competition is right now in Pro Stock, you need an absolutely error-free performance to win,” said Line.  “We didn’t have that today, and as a result our day ended earlier than we wanted.   We didn’t make a particularly good run in the second round, and the driver could have done a better job.  If we had done either of those, we probably would have won the round, but we didn’t, so we have to learn from it and move on.

“The good news is that we have less than a week before our next race, and we have a fast Summit Racing Pontiac.  With only a few days to get ready, we’ll need to pay attention to every detail so we can go to Atlanta, qualify well like we did here, and then convert that performance into four round wins on Sunday.”

Anderson’s Drive Stalls in Houston Second Round

Anderson’s Drive Stalls in Houston Second Round

Event:  25th annual NHRA Spring Nationals

Location: Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown, Tex.

Day/Date: Sunday, April 29, 2012

Greg Anderson and the Summit Racing team came into Sunday’s final eliminations of the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Tex. looking to continue their 2012 string of race day successes, having advanced to the final round in four of this season’s five races.  To do so, they knew they would need to elevate their performance and find a competitive consistency.  Further complicating the team’s assignment were the increased temperatures and humidity at Royal Purple Raceway, which would not only rob their naturally aspirated engine of valuable horsepower, but also require changes to the tune-up in order to maximize performance.

Starting fifth, Anderson used a solid 6.605-second, 209.78 mph run to defeat Kurt Johnson in the first round.  This set the stage for a quarterfinal encounter with No. 4 qualifier David Connolly, who had posted the second quickest time in the opening round.  Although the four-time champion posted a representative 6.611-second time with a top speed of 210.05 mph, his opponent was able to score the round win with his 6.596-second, 210.11 mph pass.

“For some reason, we were off on the set-up the entire weekend,” said Anderson.  “It wasn’t for lack of trying, as we threw everything at our Summit Racing Pontiac looking to better its performance, but it never really responded the way we wanted it to.  We made a couple of decent runs in qualifying, but just could not duplicate them today in the heat.  We spun the tires at the hit in the second round, and it cost us.

“We have less than a week before our next race in Atlanta, so we’ll put this weekend behind us, study our notes to figure out how to fix this, and do whatever we need to run well there.  Needless to say, we have a lot of work to do, and a very short time in which to do it, so it’s time to roll up our sleeves.”

Swindell Adds to Legendary Career at Knoxville Raceway

Swindell Adds to Legendary Career at Knoxville Raceway
He retakes Outlaws points lead, which is swapped for the seventh time this season

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – April 28, 2012 – Simply put, Sammy Swindell’s statistics at Knoxville Raceway are phenomenal.
Swindell claimed the first World of Outlaws feature at the famed half mile in 1979 and he picked up the lone event – not counting the Knoxville Nationals – last season. He’s a former Knoxville Nationals champion and is closing in on 50 career feature victories at the track.

“It’s a track where you’ve really got to carry the corner speed and your momentum, and really hit the marks just right,” he said. “The line gets so narrow on the bottom and the top running it that you have to be almost perfect. I think my experience and the amount of laps help make up for that.”

That was evident Saturday night as Swindell passed Brian Brown for the lead on lap 15 and cruised to his 15th career World of Outlaws victory and 48th overall at Knoxville Raceway.

The win was his third of the season and allowed Swindell to regain the points lead, which has been swapped seven times this season. Swindell holds a seven-point advantage over Donny Schatz as the top five are separated by a mere 58 points.

“I think we’ve had the car that could win the last few races,” Swindell said. “We had one at Haubstadt, but had a part break and still managed a third with a wounded car. If we keep this thing running, we’ve got a chance of winning every night.”

Swindell uncharacteristically qualified 16th quickest, which gave him the final spot in the invert and the pole position for the fourth-and-final heat race. He led all eight laps to pick up his series-best fifth heat win of the season, which locked him into the dash.

Swindell started last – 10th – and drove to seventh in the six-lap race, which aligned him on the inside of the fourth row for the 25-lap feature.

A trio of red flags within the first three laps stalled the race, but allowed Swindell to climb to fourth. He picked up third place on lap three and grabbed the runner-up position on lap five.

Chasing his first career World of Outlaws feature win, polesitter Brian Brown had driven to nearly a half-straightaway advantage when Swindell began to close the gap. As Brown battled through traffic on lap nine, Swindell edged closer.

With 11 laps remaining, Swindell rocketed off the bottom in turn four and passed Brown for the top spot at the finish line. Swindell then negotiated thick lapped traffic and a final caution with six laps remaining.

Brown, who started on the outside of Swindell on the double-file restart with six laps to go, entered turn one side by side only to lose ground as they exited the turn. Craig Dollansky passed Brown for the runner-up position on the backstretch.

“We sure would have liked to have been one spot better, but we definitely learned some things here tonight,” Dollansky said. “Sammy, he had a real good car. He’s been strong here the last couple of years.

“Second with this group of cars that were here tonight is nothing to shake a stick at.”

Joey Saldana slipped past Brown for the final podium spot with a couple laps remaining.

“It was a good, solid feature,” Saldana said. “I was a second-place car at best. We ran third and that’s about where we were. Sammy was definitely the class of the field.”

Brown finished fourth with nine-time Knoxville Raceway track champion and former World of Outlaws champion Danny Lasoski rounding out the top five with a last-lap pass on Schatz.

Knoxville regular Dusty Zomer charged from 21st to seventh and Jason Sides earned the KSE Hard Charger Award after driving from 23     rd to eighth. Brad Sweet was ninth and Terry McCarl finished 10th.

In his first career race at Knoxville Raceway, Trey Starks led all eight laps to claim his heat race. Ian Madsen, McCarl and Swindell were the other heat winners. Saldana set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 14.881 seconds and Don Droud Jr. claimed the Last Chance Showdown.

Line Uses Consistency to Qualify Second in Houston

Line Uses Consistency to Qualify Second in Houston

Event:  25th annual NHRA Spring Nationals

Location: Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown, Tex.

Day/Date: Saturday, April 28, 2012

Jason Line and his Summit Racing team strung together three consistent runs to earn the second starting spot for Sunday’s eliminations of the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Tex.  Starting with his 6.550-second, 211.00 mph effort on Friday evening, the reigning Pro Stock champion made three consecutive passes in the 6.55-second range, including the two quickest runs in Saturday’s twin qualifying sessions, allowing him to add a total of eight bonus points (out of a maximum of 12) while extending his 2012 streak of qualifying in the top two positions to six.

Despite this impressive performance, as he prepared for his first-round encounter with Rickie Jones, Line still felt there was room for even more improvement.  However, his primary concern entering race day was translating his qualifying success into round wins and, hopefully, his second win of the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing season.

“It may sound funny considering we had the quickest time in each session today, but I thought we would run better than we did,” said Line.  “After all, we’re never happy unless we’re No. 1.   Still, we had a very good day with our Summit Racing Pontiac, especially considering today’s higher temperatures and humidity.  Best of all, we have a great starting spot for tomorrow and a very fast hot rod, one that is certainly capable of winning the race.

“Our goal for tomorrow is quite simple – to turn on our win light four times.  Of course, there are fifteen other drivers with that same idea, so we just have to make sure we do our jobs better than they do.  We’ve shown that we can get it done in qualifying – now it’s time to back that performance up with a win on Sunday.”

Anderson Picks Up the Pace in Houston, Starts Fifth

Anderson Picks Up the Pace in Houston, Starts Fifth

Event:  25th annual NHRA Spring Nationals

Location: Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown, Tex.

Day/Date: Saturday, April 28, 2012

After posting the eighth-quickest time on Friday, Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson entered the final day of qualifying for the NHRA Spring Nationals in Houston, Tex. determined to improve his standing for race day.  Despite Saturday’s higher temperatures, Anderson and his KB Racing crew responded to the challenge, posting the third-quickest time of the morning session at 6.575-seconds with a top speed of 211.00 mph to claim the fifth starting position, his ninth Top Five qualifying performance in 13 career starts at Royal Purple Raceway.

However, as he prepared to open Sunday’s final eliminations against veteran Kurt Johnson, Anderson opined that both he and his KB Racing crew would need to better their performance in order to contend for their third Houston win.  Fortunately, it is a scenario which they have repeated often during this season’s first five races, resulting in two wins in four final round appearances.

“We’re hoping to continue our 2012 trend where we’ve struggled in qualifying but raced extremely well on Sunday,” said Anderson.  “Basically, we’ve been exploring every option in qualifying, trying to improve our performance and get it closer to the top cars.  We could go out there and make four consistent, average runs, but that’s not how you win races.  As tight as the competition is in Pro Stock, you need every facet to be working at its very best.

“I’m confident we’ll be able to take what we’ve learned about this Summit Racing Pontiac and make it better, but there are no guarantees.  Still, in four of this year’s first five races we’ve been able to put it all together on race day so I see no reason why we can’t do the same tomorrow.  By the time the first round rolls around, every member of this team will be ready to do whatever it takes to put this car in the winner’s circle. Everything is there for us to do it, we just have to find a way.”
