Late On-Track Accident Shortens Brian Scott’s Day at Dover International Speedway

Brian Scott welcomed partners ACME and Kraft Singles on board his No. 33 Chevrolet for his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut at Dover International Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The Idaho native started 26th and finished 38th in the FedEx 400 presented by Autism Speaks following a late-race incident at the “Monster Mile” concrete oval. Scott battled a tight-handling condition during a long, green-flag run early in the race, causing him to fall two laps down to the race leader. When the caution flag was displayed on lap 165, Scott elected not to pit and take the wave around to regain one lap. The field restarted on lap 168 with Scott in the 23rd position. Long green-flag racing resumed again and on lap 248 the leaders hit pit road for service. The No. 33 team had strategy on their mind and elected to stay out. This allowed the ACME/Kraft Singles machine to return to the lead lap when the caution flag was displayed on lap 260. Scott restarted 13th with 133 laps to go. A vibration in the No. 33 Chevrolet caused Scott to drop to the 19th position on lap 275 and visit pit road under green-flag conditions for four fresh Goodyear Racing tires and fuel on lap 310. Sliding back into the 24th position, down two lap to the leader, Scott continued to battle through the field for the remainder of his 11th Sprint Cup Series race. With 24 laps to go, Scott was racing in the 18th position when he got collected in an on-track accident that ended the day for the No. 33 ACME/Kraft Singles Chevrolet team. SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, NO. 11 TEAM MISTIC E-CIGS – KVSH RACING CHEVROLET, RACE WINNER: TALK ABOUT THAT RUN TO THE END: “It was just about as nerve wracking as it gets. When we elected to stay out, I was like ‘Oh man, it is all or nothing’ from there. All I could hope for was just the same scenario as NOLA. Complicated conditions and one yellow after another and it was the right call today again. The difference is that we obviously deserved it I think because the boys worked really hard. We were on pace; we passed a bunch of cars and made the moves when it mattered. We made it stick all the way to the end. When we got on the Firestone red tires, I was like ‘Boy, that is way too early’. There was half-way of a groove. Just felt like it was such a risky move. But, I knew it was the right one, just like yesterday. I just couldn’t be any happier that we made it stick.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Belle Isle Post Race

SO YOU GUYS WERE SO LOW ON FUEL YOU COULDN’T MAKE IT BURNOUT? “No I just had too much grip from the Firestone tires. I couldn’t spin the rear wheels.”

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU BECAUSE YOU GUYS HAVE WORKED SO HARD TO GET THIS TEAM BACK WHERE IT NEEDED TO BE “Yeah, it’s just a heck of a feeling. After yesterday’s debacle where we couldn’t get it more wrong yesterday and today, well we did everything wrong yesterday but did everything right today. The strategy, the pit stops, the management of the fuel – the guys did awesome. I couldn’t be any happier for the Mystic guys, Hydroxycut, Circle K, and Chevrolet at home man!”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S PRO SERVICES CHEVROLET SS – Race Winner
THE CALL TO STAY OUT WITH OLD TIRES AND THREE DIFFERENT RESTARTS, HOW DID YOU HOLD THOSE GUYS OFF WITH NEW TIRES BEHIND YOU?
“Gosh, just driving hard and working that track bar adjuster as much as I could. I was trying to be smart with my line and I guess guys on two tires weren’t all that fast. Chad (Knaus, crew chief) said something to be about that on the radio and they never really came, you know? The No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) and I did just fine on old tires and held those guys off. It was a long-fought day. I’m so proud of this Lowe’s race team. A big shout out to those Pro Services members at Lowe’s and everyone at Chevrolet; and Valvoline, and the fans and my fans. It was just an awesome day here at the race track. The grandstands are full. Thank you, Sprint. And we’re going to enjoy this.”

YOU ARE A 10-TIME WINNER HERE NOW AT DOVER. TODAY WAS ABOUT 90 DEGREES. THE HUMIDITY WAS OFF THE CHARTS. HOW KEY IS YOUR CONDITIONING IN PERFORMANCES LIKE THIS AND YOUR SUCCESS AT THIS RACE TRACK?
“It certainly plays a role. I don’t doubt that at all. It helps me learn about my hydration and nutrition and getting ready. I rode 52 (miles) yesterday; I’m not sure that was the smartest thing to do, but I know what I’m capable of and felt just fine doing it. And, I’ve got a great rhythm. I’ve got great support at home. I want to thank Chani; I wish she were here. And ‘hi’, to my little girls sitting on the couch, watching. I’ll be there soon and can’t wait to see them.”

So, we missed it by a little bit, but I’m obviously proud of the continued effort by all the guys on the Furniture Row team. We have an awesome race car. We thought we were okay in practice. TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET DRIVERS DEFENDING VERIZON INDYCAR SERIES CHAMPION WILL POWER AND THREE-TIME INDIANAPOLIS 500 WINNER HELIO CASTRONEVES spoke briefly with media at the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix:
WILL POWER, NO. 1 VERIZON TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET
IF YOU HAVE A RAINY RACE ON SATURDAY, HOW MUCH MORE PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY CHALLENGING IS IT IF YOU HAVE A WET RACE AND THEN A DRY ONE SUNDAY? “In the wet, it’s a lot easier physically. There’s nowhere near the grip as in the try. You don’t have the g-force loads, and it’s cooler in the wet. So it’s nice if it’s wet, physically for sure.”

CAN YOU NOW GET A FEEL FOR THE NEW CONCRETE AND SOME OF THE CHANGES THEY’VE MADE AROUND THE TRACK, LIKE TURN 13? DID IT MAKE IT WIDER? “It’s definitely more of a ballsy corner, for sure. (Will there be more passing there?) It’s hard to say. Last year there was a lot of passing, and it was pretty racey through there already. It’s faster than last year, for sure. It’s not much different but just faster. We’re already closer to where we qualified last year.”

HELIO CASTRONEVES, NO. 3 HITACHI TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET
LOOKING AT THE WEATHER NOW, HOW DO YOU PREPARE NOW FOR A RACE WHERE THERE’S RAIN IN THE FORECAST? “We’re not only working toward qualifying, but we’re also working toward the race. If you go through the race and all of a sudden you start chewing up tires, do you want to stop or keep going? That could be a problem. You can’t think about these things in the race. You have to be a step ahead. We can’t make any plans until about 40 minutes before qualifying starts.”

LAST YEAR, YOU WERE PRETTY DOMINANT HERE. YOU GOT A LITTLE TASTE OF WHAT YOU HAVE DURING PRACTICE THIS MORNING. HOW DOES THE CAR FEEL? “The Hitachi car looks very strong. We’re happy with the conditions where we started. I feel we have a good chance to do what we did last year. For sure the other competitors have stepped up their games since then. It should be a good battle.”

TALK ABOUT YOUR CAR AND WHAT YOU EXPECT FOR THE WEEKEND AS WE HEAD INTO QUALIFYING LATER TODAY:
“A tire change and decrease in horsepower definitely changes this place a lot. We are kind of just throwing all of our notes out of what we had in the past that has worked. It’s like starting all over again. We had some challenges today we weren’t near as good as we were hoping to be. We are working diligently to try to improve our qualifying effort that is going to happen here in a little bit. Then kind of go through our notes this evening to see what we can start with tomorrow to make some improvements. Just the fact that you are driving much deeper into the corners with less power makes a huge impact here because of the big dips and bumps going into (Turn) 3. It really loads the car up much more aggressively over there. It makes those bumps seems like they are even worse than what we have had in the past. That is just one of the little things that when you take 100 horsepower out of the cars how it can change your approach in your set-up and what you have to do to get around a race track such as Dover.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Dover–Jeff Gordon
