COURTNEY FORCE TOPS ON FRIDAY AT BANDIMERE SPEEDWAY

DENVER, CO – Courtney Force set the elapsed time track record in the second qualifying session tonight at Bandimere Speedway, the first event on the historic NHRA Western Swing. Her 3.917 second pass at 318.39 mph was low of the session, low of the day and at the time only the second ever three-second run at the Mile High Nationals.

“We were definitely hoping to run in the 3.0s after we saw my dad (John Force) lay down a 3.95 in Q1. It was definitely worth the wait, I’ll say that,” said Force who was abruptly shut off on the starting line at the beginning of Q1 due to a storm overhead and rain beginning to fall on the race track. Two-time champion Erica Enders returned to the top of the Pro Stock charts, grabbing the provisional No. 1 spot for the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals on Friday at Bandimere Speedway.

Enders dominated the class the past two seasons, winning 15 races and the championship in 2014 and 2015, but a change in rules and a switch to Mopar precipitated a small step back this season as her Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge team worked to develop a new Dodge Dart and new fuel-injected engines. LIKE RIDING A BIKE?
“No, I mean yes and no. When you get to drive a race car like this it certainly just helps you focus on what you need to do out there. Being out of the car that long and not really having a lot of experience with this package it was a tall task, I will be honest. It was one of the most challenging days I’ve had in a race car to try to get comfortable, be consistent, have the speed and give good feedback. I mean I still love this track and I’m glad that we are doing this this weekend because I think that helps me have the confidence to be able to learn faster, but it’s tough. It was tough. That first run I was like ‘wow’ I forgot how hard of work this is.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Indianapolis–Jeff Gordon

Full transcript:

TALK ABOUT BEING BACK AT INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY, A PLACE WHERE YOU AND HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS HAVE HAD A GREAT DEAL OF SUCCESS: “Excited to be back, obviously. This is such a cool race track. I dreamed of racing here as a kid, but my dreams then, the cars didn’t have fenders on them. So, to come back and still have a chance to race here, and still have an opportunity to win four of these things, hopefully a few more chances to pull into Victory Lane and celebrate. Then even head out to kiss the bricks would be really cool. I guess from a race standpoint, I’m glad that we are here with this package and not the package we had last year. Very difficult to complete passes and kind of get around the race track. It was a much different experience last year, and I was a part of the test last week. It was nice to have the cars drive like they did from the ’14 season.”

On Wednesday evening, 17-year-old Jake Griffin earned a top-five finish in his first start in the No. 11 Backlot Auctions Toyota Tundra. The young dirt track ace, making only his fifth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start, was fast right off the bat. In two practices on Tuesday evening, Griffin was eighth and 11th fastest. By lap 20, Griffin was in fifth and reported that his Tundra was running well. Under a yellow flag on lap 39, Griffin pulled to pit road for four Goodyear tires and Sunoco fuel, restarting in fourth. A tight handling condition on the No. 11 Tundra caused Griffin to fall back to the eighth position. By the end of the second race segment, Griffin was in the sixth position, but restarted in 13th after taking four tires and fuel. He returned to the top 10 and was in eighth position with 48 laps to go. He continued to battle forward and moved into the top-five by lap 110. “It was a tough night all around, but it was great to see all the fans that came out. There’s always a great turnout at Eldora (Speedway). I wish we could have been up at the front racing for the win, but we unfortunately ended up back in the pack and got caught up in an incident that put us laps down. It wasn’t the result we wanted, but we’ll work on it and I’m looking forward to getting back on asphalt next week at Pocono (Raceway).”
