Holly Shelton Returns to Midget Racing with Xtreme Outlaws June 1 at Tri-City

CONCORD, NC (May 11, 2023) – For the first time in nearly five years, Holly Shelton will return to the seat of a dirt Midget – Thursday, June 1, at Illinois’ Tri-City Speedway in her debut with the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota.

Bundy Built Motorsports has readied a Spike Chassis with Bundy Built power for the 27-year-old Californian as she aims to tackle the famed 3/8-mile for the first time since her rookie season in 2016. Tri-City will be the first of what she said will be a pick-and-choose slate of 10-to-15 Midget races over the 2023 season.

Though the official partnership was only recently formed, Shelton and the Bundy Built team go back further than many may realize. She and driver Ethan Mitchell were Outlaw Kart competitors before their time in the Midget ranks, even racing together occasionally out on the West Coast. Fast forward to 2023, and the two are going Midget racing together on the same team – Mitchell and his father Bundy both serving as her crew members.

“To see how competitive they are now, I’m pretty pumped to be with them,” Shelton said. “They’ve got their stuff really good.”

While the Bundy gang is making it happen, Shelton got the ball rolling with a simple conversation.

“I came to them earlier this year with the idea,” she said. “Sitting on the couch, watching Chili Bowl from home – wishing [I was] there kind of made me want to get back out there.

“I see how good the girls are doing now; it’s awesome. I miss it.”

Shelton stepped away from racing at the completion of the 2018 season, ending a three-year stint with Keith Kunz Motorsports and Toyota Racing Development. She’s since graduated college and moved to the Charlotte area with her fiancée – NASCAR Cup Series driver, Erik Jones.

In that time, many were left wondering if she’d ever return to the national Midget ranks. So, why now?

“I don’t know… it might’ve been one night with a couple drinks and I’m like, ‘You know what, I should get back in a Midget.’ And Erik’s like, ‘Yeah you should!’ So, I was like, ‘Okay, that’s permission. Let’s do it!’”

It was a big enough spark to light the flame inside her that still wanted to compete and still had unfinished business.

“You never lose that competitive drive,” she said.

During her 2018 campaign, Shelton drove to a runner-up finish at a POWRi race in Missouri, which then stood as the record for the highest a female had ever finished in a national-level Midget event. Fast forward to 2023; the landscape has changed.

In January 2022, it was Kaylee Bryson’s record-breaking accolade as the first woman ever to start the Chili Bowl Nationals A-Main. Last year, Taylor Reimer and Jade Avedisian became the first female drivers to win a national Midget event. And this year, Avedisian continues to add pages to the history books, leading the Xtreme Outlaw points standings in March after her third career Series victory.

“I love Jade – she is a total badass, on and off the track,” Shelton said. “One of the last times I talked to her on Twitter I said, ‘I’m gonna come and race you, so don’t beat me too bad.’”

Though she sings the praises of her fellow KKM talents, Shelton also wants a slice of the proverbial pie before she hangs it up for good – whenever that may be.

“To see those girls lock into Chili Bowl – it’s a cool thing to see from a girl’s perspective,” Shelton said. “But then, you’re also like, ‘Damn, I want to do that.’

“There’s a few things left that I want to do before I get really old and have a family.”

Don’t miss Shelton’s headlining return to Midget racing when the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota makes its debut at Tri-City Speedway on Thursday, June 1.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate on race day. If you can’t make it to the track, stream all the action live on DIRTVision.

CELEBRATING THE PAST, PRESENT & FUTUREAs the celebration of NASCAR’s 75th anniversary continues, all three of NASCAR’s national series are on the horizon of the annual “Throwback Weekend” at Darlington Raceway, where drivers and teams across the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS), NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) will pay tribute to the sport’s history.  The 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval has been a staple piece of NASCAR’s history, holding a spot on the series’ schedule since 1950. Famously known as the “Lady in Black”, the South Carolina venue has been the site of the annual “Throwback Weekend” since 2015. The sixth tripleheader race weekend of 2023, Chevrolet will head to Darlington Raceway as the winningest manufacturer of the season across all three NASCAR national series.
TOO TOUGH TO TAME? Known as one of the most challenging tracks on the circuit, Chevrolet has a storied history at the “Track Too Tough to Tame”, collecting a series-best 42 wins in 123 NASCAR Cup Series races. 21 different drivers have contributed to Chevrolet’s win record at Darlington Raceway including Herb Thomas, who produced the Bowtie brand’s first win at the track in 1955 behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Bel Air.
The NCS’ most recent appearance at Darlington Raceway saw Erik Jones park his No. 43 Camaro ZL1 in victory lane for a playoff upset win in the Cook Out Southern 500 (Sept. 2022). The triumph in the crown jewel event was also a monumental feat for the iconic No. 43 with Jones’ victory giving the car number that was made famous by Richard Petty its 200th all-time win.
WIN STREAKS IN SOUTH CAROLINA In NASCAR’s more than 70 year history at Darlington Raceway, 13 different drivers are credited with posting consecutive wins at the track in NASCAR’s premier series. Topping that elite list is Dale Earnhardt Sr., who was the first driver to post three consecutive wins at the track – all behind the wheel of a Chevrolet-powered machine (Sept. 1989, April and Sept. 1990). Career Chevrolet driver Jeff Gordon went on to match Earnhardt Sr.’s three-race winning streak at the track – collecting three of his seven career NCS victories at Darlington Raceway in the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
FIGHTING FOR FIVE-IN-A-ROW AT DARLINGTONThe NASCAR Xfinity Series will return to the track after a one-week break with Saturday’s Shriners Children’s 200 at Darlington Raceway – the series’ 11th race of the 2023 season. The NXS made its debut at the 1.366-mile oval in 1982 and the South Carolina track has since hosted 65 races for the series. Chevrolet has amassed 21 all-time NXS wins at the track – including wins in the series’ past four races at the track courtesy of JR Motorsports (Justin Allgaier – May 2021 & May 2022; Noah Gragson – Sept. 2021 & Sept. 2022).  Three of Chevrolet’s NASCAR Cup Series regulars will be doing the Darlington double, also climbing behind the wheel of a Camaro SS for Saturday’s 200-mile event.
–       Kyle Larson will add his name to the star-studded lineup for Kaulig Racing’s No. 10 Camaro SS – marking his first NXS start of the season. The former NCS Champion will be the fifth NCS regular to get behind the wheel of Kaulig Racing’s “All-Star” car this season, joining fellow Team Chevy drivers Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon, AJ Allmendinger and Justin Haley. Darlington Raceway is the site of Larson’s most recent NXS start, collecting a top-five finish in the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro SS.  –       For the first time since September 2018, Ty Dillon is set to return to the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) NXS stable behind the wheel of the No. 3 Camaro SS. The 31-year-old North Carolina native has 134 career NXS starts in the RCR entry, collecting 84 top-10 finishes. The No. 3 RCR Camaro SS made its series’ debut at Daytona International Speedway in 2002 and the entry has since seen an elite group of drivers behind the wheel including the Dillon brothers (Ty and Austin), Mike Porter, Jeff Green, Ron Hornaday Jr., Steve Park and Shane Lee.  –       Ross Chastain will take over the driving duties of the No. 91 DGM Racing Camaro SS for his second NXS start of the season. Chastain first joined DGM Racing last season, with the 30-year-old Florida native driving the team to a fourth-place finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course (July 2022). Chastain will also make his third consecutive NCTS start of the season this weekend, returning to the seat of the No. 41 Niece Motorsports Silverado RST. In four NCTS starts this season, he’s powered the team to a pole win (COTA) and two top-five finishes (COTA and Kansas).
ENFINGER’S WIN MOVES GMS RACING CLOSER TO MILESTONE VICTORY WITH CHEVROLETGMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger and the No. 23 Silverado RST team will head to Darlington Raceway with added momentum as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ most recent winner. Sporting a special Chevy Military Appreciation paint scheme, Enfinger drove his No. 23 Silverado RST to the team’s first win of the season at Kansas Speedway last weekend – also securing a berth into the series’ playoffs for a run at the championship title. The triumph marked Enfinger’s eighth career NCTS victory – with each of those victories recorded at a different race track on the series’ circuit.
The 38-year-old Alabama native’s victory moved GMS Racing one step closer to a milestone victory with Chevrolet. Enfinger delivered GMS Racing its 43rd all-time NCTS win – all of which have been recorded with Chevrolet. The organization now ties Kevin Harvick Incorporated as the winningest Chevrolet team in NCTS history, playing a large part in the manufacturer’s storied history in the series.
“Chevrolet has been a partner of Maury’s (Gallagher) since the team’s inception 10 years ago,” said Enfinger following the win. “They’ve been a huge part of this truck series team. Chevrolet has been great to us.”
The victory marked Chevrolet’s 266th all-time NCTS victory – extending its record as the winningest manufacturer in NCTS history. “Chevrolet has been a heck of a partner and continues to be a great partner,” continued Enfinger. “They were on our truck with a beautiful paint scheme with the Chevy Military Appreciation initiative, so just very, very thankful. It’s not just been Mike (Beam), Maury (Gallagher) and the guys at GMS Racing that has put the effort behind this – it’s been Dayne (Pierantoni, Chevrolet Program Manager – NASCAR Truck Series) and everybody at Chevrolet that has been behind this effort and they continue to stand behind it.”
NCTS HITS HALFWAY POINT IN REGULAR-SEASONAt the drop of the checkered flag at Kansas Speedway last weekend, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is officially halfway through the series’ 16-race regular-season. A look at Chevrolet’s 2023 NCTS season highlights, to date:
 ·       Chevrolet has recorded a manufacturer-leading four wins in eight NCTS races thus far this season – recorded by four drivers from four different Chevrolet teams. The manufacturer’s first NCTS win of the season came at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when Kyle Busch drove his No. 51 KBM Silverado RST to victory lane – the organization’s first win since joining Chevrolet at the beginning of the season. Chevrolet NCTS regulars that have also collected a win for the Bowtie brand this season includes Christian Eckes (Atlanta Motor Speedway), Carson Hocevar (Texas Motor Speedway) and Grant Enfinger (Kansas Speedway).
·       Team Chevy drivers account for four of the top-10 positions in the NCTS’ driver points standings – with each driver coming from a different Chevrolet team. GMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger and McAnally-Hilgemann Racing’s Christian Eckes lead the Bowtie brigade from the fifth- and sixth-positions, respectively – both already securing a playoff spot by virtue of a win. NCTS rookie contender Nick Sanchez (No. 2 Rev Racing Silverado RST) is ninth, and Matt DiBenedetto (No. 25 Rackley W.A.R. Silverado RST) rounds out the top-10.
·       Chevrolet continues to lead in the NCTS’ manufacturer points standings, heading into the second-half of the regular-season with a 10-point advantage over its competitors.
BOWTIE BULLETS:·       Active Chevrolet drivers with a NASCAR Cup Series win at Darlington Raceway:    Erik Jones – 2 (2022, 2019)Kyle Busch – 1 (2008)
·       In 123 NASCAR Cup Series races at Darlington Raceway, Chevrolet leads all manufacturers with 43 victories, including the series most recent visit at the track (Erik Jones – 2022).
·       13 drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history have captured consecutive wins at Darlington Raceway. Dale Earnhardt Sr. (1989-1990) and Jeff Gordon (1995-1996) top the list with three consecutive wins each – all recorded with Chevrolet.
·       Only three drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series are repeat winners this season, all coming from Team Chevy (William Byron – Las Vegas & Phoenix; Kyle Larson – Richmond & Martinsville; Kyle Busch – Auto Club and Talladega).
·       In 12 points-paying NASCAR Cup Series race this season, Chevrolet continues to lead the series in wins (seven), top-fives (28), top-10s (51), stage wins (13) and laps led (1,619).
·       Chevrolet leads the series in wins across all three NASCAR national series this season with seven victories in 12 NASCAR Cup Series races, six victories in 10 NASCAR Xfinity Series races and four wins in eight NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races – all with a win percentage of at least 50%.
·       Grant Enfinger’s win at Kansas Speedway marked GMS Racing’s 43rd all-time NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win, tying Kevin Harvick Incorporated as the winningest Chevrolet organization in NCTS history.
·       Chevrolet’s series-leading seven NASCAR Cup Series wins this season have been recorded by drivers from three different Chevrolet teams: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (JTG Daugherty Racing), Kyle Busch (Richard Childress Racing), William Byron and Kyle Larson (Hendrick Motorsports).
·       Chevrolet drivers have recorded 13 of the 24 NASCAR Cup Series stage wins this season: William Byron (six; series-leading), Ross Chastain (four), Kyle Larson (two) and Chase Elliott (one).
·       Chevrolet continues to sit atop the manufacturer points standings in all three NASCAR national series, leading by 30 points in the NASCAR Cup Series, 28 points in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and 10 points in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
·       With its 41 NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer’s Championships, 33 NASCAR Cup Series Driver’s Championships, and 840 all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins, Chevrolet continues to hold the title of winningest brand in NASCAR Cup Series history.

QUOTABLE QUOTES:ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 WORLDWIDE EXPRESS / UPS CAMARO ZL1 Can you talk about driving the Worldwide Express, UPS scheme this weekend?“It was really cool that Worldwide Express chose a Dale Jarrett UPS paint scheme. There is a natural connection for Worldwide Express to select that scheme. WWEX is actually the largest UPS authorized reseller. So there’s a business connection for them choosing it and Dale made that paint scheme very visible during his career. So many fans and people remember Dale driving the brown and white scheme, and all of the commercials they used to do.”
What do you think about Darlington?“I like going to Darlington. It’s such a unique track and I love how challenging it is. Every corner is so unique and it’s so challenging to get your car set to turn well at the track. This weekend I’ll be able to get a lot of laps in by running all three series. It’s a fun weekend with it being throwback and all of the excitement that surrounds it.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 BASS PRO SHOPS CAMARO ZL1What are your thoughts on Darlington Raceway?“I’ve always loved Darlington Raceway. It’s a historic track and a lot of drivers and teams circle it at the beginning of the year as a place they would love to win at, myself included. We finished second at Darlington a couple of years ago. It’s a demanding track. Darlington is a place that falls off, so tire management becomes important, and I really like that. It’s nice that we’re going to place that long run speed matters a bit.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM THROWBACK CAMARO ZL1Larson on racing at Darlington Raceway: “I always look forward to going to Darlington (Raceway). I want to win everywhere, but especially at tracks I haven’t won at yet. Darlington would definitely be one of the top on my list of tracks I hope to win at. I’ve been really fast there before and I’m excited to race at ‘The Lady in Black’ again.”

CLIFF DANIELS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM THROWBACK CAMARO ZL1Daniels on what makes Darlington a challenging track: “Kyle (Larson) loves Darlington (Raceway). I love Darlington. It is such a great track because it is so challenging. Every aspect of the track is so much fun. It’s got the character of bumps, different lanes and different age asphalt. You’ve got the patch of (turns) one and two that is newer pavement and has a lot of grip and then the rest of the track doesn’t have much grip. It’s a track that we love going to. What it takes to get it done there, of course, is in the department of having a fast car, great execution and all of those things. I feel like we’ve done that before and it still hasn’t quite paid off for us. Hopefully, we find whatever the final tokens are that we need to get it done.”

KYLE BUSCH, NO. 8 LUCAS OIL CAMARO ZL1 What is the key to running well at Darlington? Can the driver make a bigger difference in the car’s performance at Darlington than at another track?“The biggest thing about Darlington is that it’s a very comprising racetrack. Turns 1 and 2 are so different than Turns 3 and 4 so having a good compromise between the two ends of the racetrack really means a lot there to have a good day. You also have to search around and find different grooves throughout the race and what works for you and your car and also traffic. If you’ve got a guy in front of you that’s running your line, you’ve got to find another line that you can run just as well so you can get some clean air on your car in order to make a pass. With the fast speeds that you have at Darlington, even though it’s a tight mile-and-a third racetrack, aerodynamics is a huge factor. Getting clean air on your car, especially through the majority of the run, is important because now tire falloff is so big that you have to have that grip as much as you can have of it.”
How special is your win at Darlington in 2008? You led the most laps and beat Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon for the victory. “Winning at Darlington in 2008 was cool because that was my first Crown Jewel win. It was also early on in my first year at JGR. It was a repave at Darlington so it was a new surface and it made passing and racing around that track very challenging because the speeds were so high. I remember bouncing off the wall a few times and maybe it made the car faster each time I did, I don’t know, but it seemed like we kept on digging and kept on going fast. That was really cool to score that win there and I’ve been close a couple of other times, which is very frustrating, because I want to win there again and be more than just a one-time Southern 500 winner.”
You have recently experienced more than your share of misfortune at Darlington. How important is it to turn that around in a few weeks?“It’s just been really, really frustrating. Last year we had an engine blow up while leading. I think two or three years before that we were running second and just couldn’t pass the leader in the last run of the race and finished second. There was another year there where I blew a right-front tire with two to go and there was another year where I was leading in the final run, had a flat tire and I had to pit. It’s been a lot of misfortune at Darlington but it would certainly mean a lot to get another win there.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 LLUMAR CAMARO ZL1Elliott on what this weekend’s throwback scheme means to him: “This one means a lot. Those years were extremely crucial, not only for the number, but I’m not even sure I would have found racing had those years not been going on. If I wasn’t exposed then, I don’t know that I’d find it. Those years impacted me heavily and certainly sparked my interest to want to try to do it.”
Elliott on racing at Darlington: “Darlington (Raceway) has been a struggle over the years. We ran really good there my first trip (in the NASCAR Xfinity Series), but really ever since then it’s been hard to be consistently strong there. Both ends of the track are really different and it’s always kind of hard to get your car exactly like you want it on both ends. Obviously, I haven’t quite figured out how to do that. If I had to give a one-word answer on racing at Darlington, it would be challenging.”

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, NO. 9 LLUMAR CAMARO ZL1Gustafson on what is key for running well at Darlington: “To be good at Darlington (Raceway), I think you’ve got to have a good handling car. (Turns) one and two are really fast. You have to be able to drive up the hill with security and turn and race across the center of the corner, run a lot of throttle and then turn down off of two with good front-end turn and stability. In (turns) three and four, you typically get loose into that corner and then tight through the center and free off, so it’s a barrage of issues. It’s very different loading end-to-end and how the car responds from the accelerations. It makes it tough, but it makes it really fun and gives you the opportunity to make a difference, you know, both with the car and the driver. I love the place. It’s one of the most unique tracks we’ve got and it’s super specific.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA THROWBACK CAMARO ZL1Byron on what he expects for this weekend: “Darlington (Raceway) is one of the tracks I really like racing at. You have to manage tires throughout a run because the surface is so old and really uses tires up. We had a hot slick surface last weekend to race on and had a couple tires ‘slip’ because of it. This weekend will be similar in that situation but you really have to manage them throughout the entire run as well. You can’t go too hard early on because you’ll fall off too much in the end. I think running the truck race on Friday will help with that as well. It will help me get up to speed on what the track characteristics are like since we were there last fall.”

RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 AXALTA THROWBACK CAMARO ZL1Fugle on what makes Darlington a good race: “You have two completely different ends to Darlington (Raceway). (Turns) one and two you will run a lot of throttle and you’ll be pretty close to the wall. Going into (turn) three you’re going to have to stomp on the brakes, and you can get fairly low or you can rip the wall, but just know you’ll get loose at that end of the track if you do. It makes for a heck of a race. It’s one of those races that you don’t get the full experience unless you watch it in person. If you could get down there and sit in turn four to see how sideways the cars are, you’ll see how crazy it is to drive those things.”

JUSTIN HALEY, NO. 31 LEAFFILTER GUTTER PROTECTION CAMARO ZL1“We had a really great finish at Darlington last year, one of my best in the Cup Series, so I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to turn our luck around. Darlington is a track that has been up and down for me – it’s definitely a driver’s track. I feel like tires will wear and strategy will be really important. Hopefully we can get some speed back in our race cars and have another good showing at the Lady in Black.”

ERIK JONES, NO. 43 ALLEGIANT CAMARO ZL1“Darlington will be a cool weekend. The “throwback” weekend is always fun especially with the No. 43 Chevrolet the last few seasons. Just being able to run that car with the “Petty Blue” on it is an honor. I always love going there, Darlington has been a good track for me, been a good track for our team. So, hopefully we can get there, have the same kind of speed that we had last year, put a good race together, and contend. I look forward to it and hopefully have solid day.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 KROGER / COUNTRY CROCK CAMARO ZL1”Darlington is one of the most physical tracks we go to. Timewise it feels like it’s as long, if not longer, than the Coca-Cola 600 sometimes because it’s just a grueling race. It’s tough on equipment, tough on the driver, tough on the pit crews. We will be making a lot of pit stops. Every time there is a caution, we will come in and get tires. It’s a tough race on everyone. For us, it’s about having a good balanced race car. You don’t have to be the fastest, but you have got to have a car that’s driving good and maintaining the same speed throughout the run. It’s also about eliminating mistakes. You are going to have some green flag pit stops, which is tricky at Darlington. The heat will be a factor. We’ve had a couple hot races the last two races, but I feel good in the race car and my training is good. I’m not really worried about that issue. It’s going to be a tough test for everyone.”

BLAKE HARRIS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY THROWBACK CAMARO ZL1Harris on preparing for Darlington: “Darlington (Raceway) is one of my favorite tracks. It’s a little older and it has a lot of character. It burns tires off and is one of the highest tire degradation tracks we go to, so typically I think it is one of the best races we have. There are a lot of driver inputs and guys who are good at managing their stuff can utilize their ability to do that this weekend. There is a lot that comes into play from the set-up perspective as well. I have had a couple of Southern 500 wins there with other drivers before joining Hendrick Motorsports. When I went to Colorado to join Furniture Row (Racing), we were kind of an underdog team and winning the Southern 500 was the victory that put us on the map. So, I think because of that win, it’s always been a special place for me – and it’s close to home, so I get a little more time at home with my family.”
Harris on what it takes to win at Darlington: “Darlington (Raceway) is one of those places that if you win a race, it doesn’t matter which one, there is something gritty about that. The guys that can just get up on the wheel, get after it all day, put it all together and survive show a lot of talent. The evolution of the race is the toughest part. You have guys that are going to get into the wall or blow a tire or slide into someone else and lose their cool and there are a lot of pit stops. Darlington is one of the places that has so many layers just to get to the final stage on the lead lap and that doesn’t even take into account the fact that you need a good handling car.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 QUAKER STATE CAMARO ZL1How do you feel going to Darlington?“We have had speed in the car this season, but for a variety of reasons we haven’t gotten the finish we deserve. It’s going to come here soon. Hopefully this weekend in Darlington.”
What do you think about your Darlington paint scheme?“I watched a video of Ricky’s career the other day and it’s obvious that he was a great driver and one tough man. We hope this paint scheme reminds the older generation of fans of happy times watching Ricky Rudd race and teaches the younger generation about his accomplishments.”

GRANT ENFINGER, NO. 23 CHAMPION POWER EQUIPMENT SILVERADO RSTNow that you and your team have a win in the bank, what are some of your most important goals before the playoffs start?“Our immediate goals for how we approach Darlington don’t necessarily change. However, if there’s a strategy play, we can be more aggressive with our calls and I can drive more aggressively. That mindset can change for some of the other races, but we are focused on getting better as a team and clicking off more wins. The countless hours of hard work that everybody at GMS has put into our Champion Power Equipment Chevy paid off for us last week, but we are always hungry for more and I’m excited to see where we can stack up before the time the playoffs roll around.”

RAJAH CARUTH, NO. 24 WENDELL SCOTT FOUNDATION SILVERADO RSTKansas was a great sign of competitiveness for you and your team, how can you parlay that into a better weekend in Darlington? “It’s a big vote of confidence and a testament not only to the capability, effort and sacrifices of the men and woman on my 24 Wendell Scott Foundation Silverado, but also the work of everyone at GMS Racing, GMS Fabrication, our body hangers, General Motors and Chevrolet. I can’t wait to tackle another historic NASCAR facility and hopefully make it to the end with a solid result.”

DANIEL DYE, NO. 43 RACE TO STOP SUICIDE SILVERADO RSTDarlington is undoubtedly one of the tougher tracks for a rookie to go to for the first time, what comes to your mind racing here?“As a driver, you always hear about Darlington being tough. I’m looking forward to the challenge and will be leaning on my teammates and their experience and utilizing our sim time to make the most of our weekend. We’re going to take advantage of practice as much as we can and learn throughout the entire race with our No. 43 team at GMS Racing.”

CHASE PURDY, NO. 4 BAMA BUGGIES SILVERADO RSTYou had a tough race at Kansas. Are you glad that there is another race on the schedule right away?“I’m glad that we are strapping right back into our trucks not even a week later. That’s a really good thing mentally as a driver — having an opportunity to get a good finish and quickly get your confidence back.”
Darlington is a unique race track. How do you attack the race Friday night?“Obviously it requires a lot of focus and it’s a driver’s race track. It’s important to have a truck that is stable enough and has enough security to run up against the wall and be aggressive. I think the driver who can run on top and run against the wall the best is going to be the driver to beat. You have to keep the nose on it and stay clean — don’t make mistakes like we did last weekend. It’s back to the drawing board this weekend and it’s an opportunity to have a good point’s day and put ourselves back in contention — if we do everything right maybe even come out with a win.”
At what point do you start looking at where you stand on the playoff grid?“I’ve already started looking at it and it’s already been on my mind. I know we are 11th in driver’s points and we’re sitting 12th in playoff points — I think we’re 18 points out or something like that. Realistically we are only one good day away from being in, but obviously we’d like to win and guarantee ourselves a spot.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 51 HENDRICKCARS.COM SILVERADO RSTAre you looking forward to racing in a truck at Darlington?“I really, really love racing at Darlington and I’m looking forward to racing there for the first time in a truck on Friday night. It was really fun being back in the Truck Series with KBM at the Bristol dirt race. It’s funny when I got in the truck it was the same smells and same feelings inside the truck — that was the cool part. I felt all those feelings I used to feel, and it was really fun. Obviously, it was on dirt and things were a little bit different than normal, but now that I’ve got a race under my belt with everybody on this No. 51 HendrickCars.com team and I was able to get reacclimated to driving a truck, we’re ready to go out and do everything we can to try and win a couple races these next two weeks.”

MARION CENTER, PA – May 11, 2023 – Kyle Bronson’s debut as a full-time World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Models driver has left a favorable first impression.

When the Series returns to action at Marion Center Raceway on Friday, May 19, the Brandon, FL driver finds himself second in points—18 points behind Chris Madden.

But despite opening the season with a top five and four top 10s, he knows it’s only a small portion of the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models schedule with more than 35 races to go.

That’s where his past national touring experience comes into play.

“The car’s been really good,” Bronson said. “Everything’s been going good and pretty smooth. But this deal is long. I’ve raced Lucas for four years, and I know it’s a long season, and there’s a lot of races to go.”

That’s why his focus isn’t on points racing but on adding to his Series win total.

“We can’t give up,” Bronson said. “We just need to keep working. I put myself in a bad situation at Talladega (Short Track), and I felt like we should’ve came out with the points lead. But a couple of contact things kind of messed our weekend up. Overall, our car has been extremely fast, so we’re not worried about the points. We’re going to go out and win some races and let the rest take care of itself.”

Bronson hopes to carry his early season momentum into the Northeast when the Series kicks off a Northeast swing at Marion Center. However, he knows first-hand how quickly things can change from night to night and how hard it is to keep that momentum rolling.

“This stuff is so tough,” Bronson said. “I remember as a kid going to East Bay in the grandstands and watching Billy Moyer win four races in a row and then miss the next [Feature]. It’s so crazy. This deal is so tough, so you never underestimate your competitors because everybody’s working, and the one second you feel like you got it figured out, the next guy works harder than you and beats you.”

It’s not only the competitors that make racing with the World of Outlaws a season-long grind but also the cross-country travel. One element of the season that eases that grind for Bronson is having one of his best friends on tour—Brian Shirley.

“It’s good to travel up and down the road with somebody,” Bronson said. “This stuff right here is grueling, driving up and down the road across the country. People don’t realize how hard that is sometimes. It always makes it more fun when you go up and down the road with your buddies and have a good time and really enjoy your life doing this.

“At the end of the day, though, it’s all about winning. You can run 10th, and you’re miserable the next day. It’s still pretty cool getting to do this with a lot of your buddies, and I’m blessed to get to say that we do it.”

Another factor that helps ease that grind is racing for big paydays and purses throughout the season.

Those purses are something Bronson appreciates, especially when he’s running toward the front of the field.

“Anytime you can race for good money, it’s awesome,” Bronson said. “People have to put a lot of work in to let us do that. I’m very appreciative of that, and when you race for a living like we do, anytime you get to go race for a big payday, it makes your life a whole lot easier when you run good.”

Bronson hopes his strong first impression as a World of Outlaws CASE Late Model driver lasts throughout the season, keeping him in contention for his first Series title. He knows the formula to make that happen too — taking it one race at a time, he said.

“You just have to give it 120% and work as hard as you can, never let your guard down and work hard for the next one.”

Bronson and the World of Outlaws will kick off a two-week Northeast swing on Friday, May 19, at Marion Center Raceway in Marion Center, PA. Then, they’ll head to Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, PA, on Saturday, May 20, before returning to Stateline Speedway in Busti, NY, on Tuesday, May 23.

The Northeast swing finishes with three nights at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, OH, May 25-27, for the 2023 edition of the Battle at the Border.

POSSE POWER: Anthony Macri Steals Lincoln’s Gettysburg Clash with Final Corner Pass

A vintage Macri move earns the Dillsburg, PA native his third Series winABBOTTSTOWN, PA (May 11, 2023) – Anthony Macri’s reputation has been built almost entirely on his prowess banging the boards.“The Concrete Kid” added even more support for that reputation Wednesday night at Abbottstown, PA’s Lincoln Speedway.Macri saw one final chance at victory in the last corner of the Gettysburg Clash. One chance to rip the cushion better than he had all race. He was prepared to do everything he could. He was ready to bring a junked racecar back to the hauler. Leader Brent Marks went low. Macri sent it around the top. It stuck. The Pennsylvania crowd roared as the checkered flag waved. Macri powered off the cushion exiting Turn 4 and edged ahead of Marks as the two crossed the finish line. After 34 laps of chasing Marks, Macri pulled it off in the final corner in perfect Macri-fashion to score one for the PA Posse.“He peeled to the bottom, and I saw the opportunity to hammer the top,” Macri explained of the Hail Mary move. “I was kind of expecting him to go to the top in (Turns) 3 and 4, too. When he peeled down there, I sailed it in there probably as hard as I did all Feature long, and I was prepared to either junk the thing or come out on top. It paid off. This feels pretty badass.”The victory marked Macri’s third with The Greatest Show on Dirt. The entire trio have come in his home state of Pennsylvania after sweeping last October’s Nittany Showdown at Port Royal Speedway. But becoming the 27th different driver to win a World of Outlaws race at Lincoln had an extra layer of significance for Macri. Before he won at Port Royal, everyone expected him to eventually beat the World of Outlaws at the half mile due to his astonishing record at the facility. But Lincoln has never been his specialty. The three-eighths mile isn’t a track where he’s automatically circled as a favorite – making the celebration all the more gratifying.“Outlaw wins are really hard to come by,” Macri said. “Everyone probably expected them at Port Royal last year from us, but to come here and get an Outlaw win at Lincoln is pretty shocking to me because this track isn’t really my wheelhouse. But Joe (Mooney) has got us rolling on smaller tracks right now, and we had a good car. I don’t know. This is just amazing.”Macri’s route to the win began from outside row two as he lined up fourth for the 35 lap Feature. Early on, pole sitter Marks pulled comfortably ahead.Marks’ advantage continued to grow in large part due to the war taking place behind him. As he ran a smooth line every lap with the top spot, Chad Trout, David Gravel, Macri, and Brad Sweet were throwing haymakers for positions two through five.Eventually, Macri was able to establish control of the runner-up spot shortly before the halfway mark and focus on running his own line. The gap between he and Marks began to shrink little by little. As the laps dwindled, Macri began to take big chunks out of Marks’ lead. Macri pounded the top while Marks rolled the bottom. When it looked like the battle for the top spot was about to heat up in traffic, the yellow flag flew – setting up a six lap dash to the finish. When racing resumed, Marks opted to change his line to the top, leaving Macri searching on the bottom. Working the lower line is something Macri has been strengthening in his repertoire this year, so he dove down without hesitation when the #19 took the top away.Once he found a rhythm, Macri again began to reel in Marks. Coming to the white flag, Macri showed him a nose, enough to make Marks change his line on the final circuit. Marks went low. Macri went high. And the result was a finish that won’t soon be forgotten.“I lifted because my ass started puckering because the wall was coming,” Macri said with a laugh of the final corner. “As soon as I got into the wall, I mashed the gas, and after that I don’t think it came off the floor pan.”The win also marked Joe Mooney’s first with the World of Outlaws since becoming the Macri Motorsports crew chief. Mooney joined the team after a championship winning stint as car chief on Brad Sweet’s Kasey Kahne Racing #49.Behind the #39M was the #19 of Marks when the checkered flag flew. After leading the entire race except the final few hundred feet, the Myerstown, PA native couldn’t help but be a little disappointed with the outcome as he notched his 29th World of Outlaws podium. Marks explained that when he saw Macri’s nose coming to the white flag, he didn’t want to fall victim to a move he used on Macri at the same track last year.“Our car really changed there a lot the last 10 or so laps, just started sliding around and losing my drive and just wasn’t feeling very good,” Marks explained. “No matter where I was on the racetrack, I wasn’t feeling that great. Anthony showed his nose down here in (Turns) 3 and 4, and that’s how I beat him here last year for the Dirt Classic race rolling around the bottom there. I went down to try to protect it but we just slid up out of it and couldn’t get a run off the bottom there to hold the lead.”Rounding out the podium was the highest finishing World of Outlaws full-timer – David Gravel – as he stopped a potential sweep of the podium for the Posse. It was not only Gravel’s Series leading ninth top three of the season aboard the Big Game Motorsports #2, but it also marked his 200th career World of Outlaws podium. Gravel became only the 16th driver to reach the mark.“I felt like we had a really fast racecar around the top,” Gravel said. “I felt like we were just as fast as anybody around the top, but Anthony was really good running the bottom of (Turns) 3 and 4, and that’s kind of how he got back by me and won him the race. I think we had a really strong car. Hot Laps and Qualifying we weren’t very good. Heat Race, honestly, we weren’t very good. We made the car really good in the Dash. I think we had a really good car in the Feature as well but needed to be better when the track got slower and around the bottom.”Completing the top five was Danny Dietrich and Brad Sweet. Sweet’s fifth place effort helped him extend his advantage atop the standings to 24 markers. There’s a new driver behind him as Gravel took over the runner-up spot from Carson Macedo. The KSE Racing Hard Charger of the Feature was Kyle Moody with a charge from 26th to 13th.Macri began the night by picking up his second Simpson QuickTime Award of the season and the sixth of his career.CASE #No1EngineOil Heat One was claimed by Anthony Macri (seventh Heat win of career). Progressive AFT Speeds into the Mission Foods Legendary Sacramento Mile powered by Law Tigers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 10, 2023) – Progressive American Flat Track, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, shifts gears as it heads into the first of its majestic Miles with one of the sport’s iconic races, the Mission Foods Legendary Sacramento Mile powered by Law Tigers at Cal Expo in Sacramento, California, this Saturday, May 13.  This year’s edition is the 57th in the history of a race that has helped build the reputations of some of dirt track’s biggest-ever names, going all the way back to the very first Sacramento Mile won by four-time Grand National Champion Carroll Resweber in 1959.  Following four Short Tracks in the season’s opening six races, the season now transitions into a high-speed run of three consecutive Miles. Upon the 2023 schedule’s unveiling, the upcoming section of the campaign was immediately identified as key to the title defense of reigning Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle champion Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Rogers Racing/SDI Racing FTR750).  Mees has developed into an absolute master of the strategic Mile discipline, racking up a bevy of race victories that helped pave the way for his acquisition of four additional championships since joining forces with Indian Motorcycle in 2017. The Sacramento Mile certainly played a role in that success, as Mees scored four consecutive victories in the race from 2018-2021.  Now facing an early 24-point deficit, another Cal Expo triumph this weekend would be most timely. However, to do so he’ll have to overcome the rider he’s currently chasing in the standings, Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT), who just so happened to win last year’s Sacramento Mile as a rookie.  Daniels is that much stronger in 2023 with a year of experience under his belt, building up his early advantage on the strength of three wins and three runner-ups.  Third-ranked JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) figures to be a factor as well. Beach demonstrated extraordinary speed on the Miles at times a year ago even if he was unable to parlay that pace into wins, largely due to poor luck. He’s driven to get that career-first Mile win, as it’s one of just two missing components in his ultimate ambition of collecting an “old school” Grand Slam of wins (ST, TT, HM, Mile, and Superbike).  Observers will also be keenly interested in the performance of Briar Bauman (No. 3 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 890 Duke). As expected, Bauman has been up-and-down as he adapts to, and develops, his new racebike. It’ll be fascinating to see how the machine performs when given a chance to run full-song around a big Mile racetrack.  The same is true of the factory Royal Enfields piloted by Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650) and Ryan Wells (No. 94 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650). In its earliest, pre-premier class days, the bike avoided the Miles as the factory worked overtime to make up for an inherent horsepower disadvantage. However, the platform has come a long, long way from where it started. This will be the perfect opportunity to see exactly how it measures up against the best of the best on a Mile.  Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750) headlines an accomplished group of highly competitive independent riders. The Pennsylvanian has had a tough opening third of the season, as he’s gotten beaten up by more than his share of falls already in 2023. The most recent came in the Ventura ST Main Event just days ago. And with precious little time to recover, the hope is that he’ll be ready to give it his all in Sacramento.  Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER  While the factory Red Bull KTMs and Turner Hondas have largely monopolized the Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER headlines early this season, a different pairing is poised to steal back some attention this weekend.  Estenson Racing Yamaha’s Trevor Brunner (No. 21 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) comes into the race with an active three-race win streak at the Sacramento Mile – a streak that transcends teams and manufacturers.  Meanwhile, no rider in the class has been as historically great at the high-profile event as the category’s all-time winningest rider, Shayna Texter-Bauman (No. 52 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 450 SX-F), who boasts a grand tally of four Sacramento Mile wins (2012, 2013, 2017, and 2019).  Brunner has had his moments this season, and he’s been running consistently inside the top five. However, he’s still looking to recapture last season’s second-half form in which he racked up six podiums in seven races at one point, including a win in Sacramento.  Texter-Bauman, meanwhile, has flashed her trademark speed as she transitions back to the class. That said, she could definitely use a superior performance this weekend as a springboard for the rest of the year.  The usual suspects of title fighters – led by defending champ and points leader Kody Kopp (No. 1 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) and followed closely by Dalton Gauthier (No. 79 D&D Racing/Certified KTM 450 SX-F), Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F), Chase Saathoff (No. 88 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R), Morgen Mischler (No. 13 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R), Trent Lowe (No. 48 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R), and Tom Drane (No. 59 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) – will have their say of course.  This weekend also serves as something of a second chance for 1st Impressions Husqvarna’s Golden State duo of James Ott (No. 19 1st Impressions Race Team/Husqvarna Racing FC450) andChad Cose (No. 49 1st Impressions Race Team/Husqvarna Racing FC450) to impress in front of their home state fans after struggling through something of a down outing at Ventura Raceway.  There will be plenty to keep fans entertained at the track on Saturday as well, including numerous vendors, plenty of food and beverage options, and motorcycle parking.  There are a wide variety of ticketing options to select from, starting with Adult General Admission Tickets, which are just $25 if purchased in advance.  Visit https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/7818909 to purchase your tickets today!  Gates will open for fans at 5:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. PT) with Opening Ceremonies scheduled to begin at 9:45 p.m. ET (6:45 p.m. PT).   For those that can’t catch the live action from the circuit, FansChoice.tv is the live streaming home of Progressive AFT. CORVETTE RACING AT LAGUNA SECA: Garcia’s Monterey Milestone

Veteran Corvette ace will become first IMSA driver to make 100th post-merger start
DETROIT (May 10, 2023) – It’s a very special weekend for Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia. With the green flag for Sunday’s MOTUL Course de Monterey, the No. 3 Corvette C8.R ace driver will become the first driver in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship to make 100 starts in the series since the start of the post-merger era in 2014 when the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM joined together for one American sports car championship.
Garcia and Jordan Taylor will share the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette as they have since 2020. All of Garcia’s previous 99 IMSA starts have come in a Corvette. To mark Sunday’s milestone start at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, we asked Garcia for three of his most memorable races in the series. So without further delay…
1. Sebring 2017“My best race with Corvette? I think so. We struggled through much of the race but the car came alive with three hours left when I got in. It was like driving blind because the windscreen was so bad! But I knew I had to start passing cars if we wanted to win.”
2. Daytona 2021“I remember this for many reasons. My grandfather and my manager Adrian Campos passed away a few days before. So I really wanted to win that one, and we managed it! But I had a false positive COVID test with four hours to go in the race and had to watch the end from a parking lot outside the track. Definitely a day I will never forget, but I’m happy it ended with a win and a watch!”
3. VIR 2018“I tore the ACL in my knee literally three minutes before having to drive the car to the grid. The pain was really bad and it was a tough hour driving. Jan did an amazing job to finish P2 and move us into the points lead. I’m glad my injury didn’t compromise that race or the following, winning another championship with Jan and Corvette Racing.”
The MOTUL Course de Monterey Powered by Hyundai N is set for 12:10 p.m. PT / 3:10 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 14 and airs live on NBC with full streaming coverage on Peacock. IMSA Radio will have live audio coverage on XM 207, SiriusXM Online 992 and IMSA.com, which will have IMSA Radio coverage of all practice sessions, Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race.

The Memorial Day Spectacular (Lawrenceburg, IN) on Monday, May 29, and Larry Hillerud Memorial Badger 40 (Wilmot, WI) on Saturday, July 8, will both feature a $10,000 top prize for drivers to contend for. Last year, Sheldon Haudenschild scored the victory at Lawrenceburg and Carson Macedo won at Wilmot.

Federated Auto Parts joined the World of Outlaws at the beginning of the year in a multi-year deal and, so far, this year have served as title sponsor for Voluisa Speedway Park’s DIRTcar Nationals and Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s Texas Outlaw Nationals.

World’s most powerful racing cars headline The Main Event

THE MAIN EVENT – FIA/FIM European Drag Racing ChampionshipsSanta Pod RacewayFri.26 – Mon.29 May 2023  0-100mph in less than a second… 300mph at the finish line… more horsepower unleashed by two cars than by an entire F1 grid… Top Fuel Dragsters are back in force at Santa Pod.   Six of the world’s most powerful racing cars headline The Main Event when Santa Pod hosts the opening round of 2023’s FIA/FIM European Drag Racing Championships. It will be Europe’s largest Top Fuel gathering since Covid swept the board.   It’s an equal-opportunity contest too, with three female and three male drivers battling for victory honours and an early points lead in the five-race international championship series. Women drivers hold both European records: Finland’s Ida Zetterström is the continent’s quickest, at 3.782 seconds over the modern 1,000-foot course, and Switzerland’s Jndia Erbacher the fastest at 318.96mph across the finish line. Yet Sweden’s Susanne Callin heads the form book, bidding for a victory hat-trick in Santa Pod’s own Slick Tricks Racing dragster having won 2022’s last two races, at Hockenheim in Germany and at Santa Pod’s European Finals.   Amongst the male trio, a footnote in history beckons. When Duncan Micallef hits the track, it will be the first time that a serving head of a national motorsport organisation has drag raced. ‘The Maltese Lion’ was already a Top Fuel star, and 2017’s European champion, when elected President of the Malta Motorsport Federation in 2020. Having made exhibition runs for his home audience, Micallef returns to international competition for the first time since 2018. Denmark’s Stig Neergaard – ‘The Real Stig’ – is a Top Fuel veteran of no fewer than 12 final-round appearances, four with winning outcomes, while recent Swedish entrant Dennis Nilsson is the only contestant yet to clock a magic, 3-second, 300mph pass.   Free paddock access allows spectators a close-up view of the pit crews preparing these ground-shaking machines, and all the other, near-250 entries on two wheels and four as European drag racing’s post-Covid revival continues to build.   A 16-car field of Pro Modifieds contests the opening FIA Pro Mod Championship round and the second round of the Motorsport UK British Drag Racing Championship, two separate championship rounds combined in a single race. Sweden’s Jan Ericsson was a relative newcomer to the class when he became FIA champion in 2019, then promptly won it again when the title chase resumed last year after the two-season Covid break.   While Jan Ericsson eyes a third crown, his compatriot Michael Gullqvist sets out in search of his eighth. The mantle of dominance once worn by Gullqvist appears to have passed to Ericsson. Or has it? Two other Swedish veterans will be eager for a say in the matter, and both drive unique machines. 2009 FIA champion Mats Eriksson’s 1956 Ford Crown Victoria looks unlike any other Pro Mod around. Fredrik Fagerström’s is unlike any other: the 1966 Chevrolet pickup truck has the aerodynamic attributes of a brick but punches through the air to 5.9-second, 240mph effect, and his flamboyant burnouts and high-speed returns bring the crowds to their feet.   On the home front, Bobby Wallace is on a roll. The Bedford racer finished as runner-up to Jan Ericsson in last September’s European Finals before winning the next two Motorsport UK races, 2022’s National Finals and 2023’s opening round at this month’s Festival of Power. Wallace and perennial British champion Andy Robinson, from Hampshire, will lead the UK challenge but if Yorkshire veteran Wayne Nicholson can reproduce the 5.889sec/243.71mph form which earned him a maiden pole position at the Festival of Power, no one will discount him. Alongside British and Swedish entrants, racers from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Estonia complete the field.   Armed with similar, nitromethane-burning powerplants to their Top Fuel cousins, four colourful fuel Funny Cars will contest the opening stanza of the Funny Car Cup, while the Top Methanol class features Dragsters and Funnies competing together. Supporting them all is a full programme of Sportsman competition.   On two wheels, FIM-Europe competition includes Top Fuel Bikes, SuperTwin Bikes, Pro Stock Bikes and Super Street Bikes.   There are not many major motor races at which you will see children competing on the same programme as their adult peers, but Junior Dragster drivers and Junior Dragbikers are all part of the show. Across the two Junior classes, more than 40% of the drivers and riders are female.   And where ‘the show’ is concerned, Santa Pod’s array of off-track family entertainments includes the award-winning John Lawson Circus alongside Live Action Arena stunt displays, a wall-of-death motorcycle show, helicopter and funfair rides, night-time music performances and the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, among other attractions.   The Main Event takes place at Santa Pod Raceway, near Wellingborough NN29 7XA, from Friday 26th to Monday 29th May 2023. Full information is available at https://santapod.co.uk/main-event.php and tickets may be booked online at https://santapodtickets.com/ or by telephoning the box office at 01234 782828.   Photos attached:

Two New Tracks Ahead for Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series

BATAVIA, Ohio (May 9, 2023) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will take on two tracks new to the tour this weekend. The nation’s top dirt late model drivers will first visit Farmer City Raceway on Friday before tackling Fairbury Speedway on Saturday. On May 10-13, the Land of Lincoln will host the 2nd Annual Illinois Speedweek, a four-race swing beginning with Spoon River Speedway on May 10 before invading Lincoln Speedway on May 11. Each of those events, sanctioned by the FloRacing Night in America, features a $23,023-to-win / $1,000-to-start Super Late Model program. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will take center stage in Round No. 3 of the Illinois Speedweek with the tour’s first-ever stop at Farmer City Raceway. The Farmer City 74 presented by FloRacing will be a complete program for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, including Dirt Draft Hot Laps, Allstar Performance Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and a 74-lap, $25,000-to-win A-Main. The DIRTcar Modifieds ($2,000 to win) and Kids Modifieds will join the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series at Farmer City Raceway. Tyler Erb will return as the defending Farmer City 74 champion following a thriller in 2022. Erb pulled off a breathtaking pass off the final corner, nipping his fellow Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series regular Ricky Thornton Jr. by just inches at the finish line.  Farmer City Raceway is a 1/4-mile, high banked dirt oval located on the Fairgrounds in Farmer City, Illinois, just off I-74 at Exit 159. On Friday, May 12 all gates will open at 4:00PM CT. The on-track action is slated to begin at 6:00PM CT with Hot Laps. For more information, visit www.farmercityracing.com.  Fairbury Speedway’s FALS Spring Shootout presented by Titan Industries will cap off the four-race Illinois Speedweek. The $30,000 to win main event is preceded by a complete program of Dirt Draft Hot Laps, Allstar Performance Time Trials, Heat Races, and B-Mains for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The DIRTcar Modifieds are also on the docket, chasing a $3,000 top prize. In 2022, Bobby Pierce held off a late-race charge from Brandon Sheppard to lead all 60 laps of the FALS Spring Shootout. Pierce took the checkers 0.367 of a second ahead of Sheppard to collect the $30,000. Both drivers are expected to return to “America’s Dirt Track” this weekend. Fairbury Speedway is a 1/4-mile semi-banked oval located at the Fairbury, Illinois fairgrounds. The Speedway is located three blocks south of U.S. 24 on 3rd Street. All gates at Fairbury Speedway will open at 12:00PM CT (noon) on Saturday, May 13. Hot Laps will begin at 6:00PM CT with racing to follow. For more information, please visit www.fairburyspeedway.com.  Hudson O’Neal has returned to the top spot in the Big River Steel Chase for the Championship – presented by ARP standings with Ricky Thornton Jr. trailing by 40-points. Corvette Z06 Hardtop Convertible To Pace 107th Indianapolis 500

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, May 9, 2023) – For the first time in the storied history of this iconic car model, a hardtop convertible Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will lead the field to the green flag for the 107th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 28 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The exterior and interior of the Corvette Z06 convertible will be on full display as the car fulfills responsibilities on and off the track.

This is the first generation of Corvette Z06 to offer a hardtop convertible, greatly expanding the convertible’s ability to serve on track at any speed and provide open roof comfort on the street.

Corvette is the longest-running car nameplate in automotive industry history, so it’s no surprise Corvette has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” more times than any car. The 2023 race marks the 34th time for Chevrolet to pace dating back to 1948 and the 20th time overall and since 1978 for America’s favorite sports car.

“As we celebrate the rich history of the Corvette Pace Car at IMS, it’s amazing to see the evolution of these cars on and off the track,” IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. “The hardtop convertible on the 2023 Corvette Z06 is just another example of the Chevrolet innovation that translates from track to street.”

Red Mist Metallic exterior paint and two-tone Jet Black and Sky Cool Gray with Torch Red accents on the interior pair nicely with the Indianapolis 500 logos. Spider-design forged aluminum wheels finished in Tech Bronze complete the car’s iconic, race-ready look.

The 2023 Corvette Z06 is set apart by its beating heart, the 5.5L LT6 which creates 670 horsepower, making it the highest-horsepower naturally aspirated V-8 ever to ever hit the market in any production car. All that power will be held to the track with the Carbon Aero package, providing 734 pounds of downforce at 186 mph, more than any other Corvette.

In its 70-year history, Corvette has become synonymous with American sports cars, and the Z06 is the definition of America’s supercar. It’s authentic, optimistic, proud, young at heart and ingenious – values synonymous with both the Indy 500 and Chevrolet.

“We are honored to be pacing the 107th Running of the Indianapolis 500 with the Corvette Z06 convertible,” said Scott Bell, vice president, Global Chevrolet. “Chevrolet and INDYCAR share the same spirit of competition, and we are proud Z06 will lead the pack across the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Trio of PA Posse Battles Await World of Outlaws at Lincoln; Williams Grove

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Clash and Williams Grove’s Morgan Cup take center stageABBOTTSTOWN, PA (May 9, 2023) – It’s time for round two of World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars vs. PA Posse – this time with some weekday fun.World of Outlaws pride, local Lincoln lore, and Beerhill bragging rights are all on the line this week as The Greatest Show on Dirt invades “The Keystone State” for a trio of intense battles.First up is the second visit of 2023 to Lincoln Speedway (Abbottstown, PA) on Wednesday, May 10, for the Gettysburg Clash. Then, while Thursday is an off day, many teams will take part in the Hersheypark Stadium Sprint Car Experience to celebrate local racing history. And on Friday, it’s off to Mechanicsburg, PA where Williams Grove Speedway will host two nights of Morgan Cup action (May 12-13).The lone Pennsylvania race, so far, in 2023 was claimed by an invader when Rico Abreu topped Lincoln on March 18. Both the World of Outlaws and PA Posse will try to make sure that isn’t the case this week.BUY LINCOLN TICKETSBUY FRIDAY WILLIAMS GROVE TICKETSBUY SATURDAY WILLIAMS GROVE TICKETSLet’s look at some of the weekend’s top storylines:BIG CAT BACK ON TOP: For the second time this season, Brad Sweet is atop the championship standings. The four-time and defending titlist moved ahead of Carson Macedo following the action at Eldora Speedway.Lincoln Speedway presents an opportunity for Sweet to extend that advantage. During the March trip to the Pigeon Hills, Sweet led the opening 22 circuits in the Kasey Kahne Racing #49 before finishing in the runner-up position – his second podium in the last three Lincoln races.Williams Grove hasn’t been quite as kind to “The Big Cat” over the years, but he did manage to claim his first win there last July.SCHATZ SURGE: After a rough stretch with seven straight finishes outside the top 10, Donny Schatz rebounded in a big way at Eldora.Schatz put together his two best finishes of the season with a third on Friday and a runner-up on Saturday. During the latter, the Fargo, ND native managed to lead his first Feature lap of the season while challenging for the victory. The pair of nights bumped the 10-time champion from ninth to sixth in points. Now Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb Agajanian Racing team head to an area of the country that’s always been kind to them. Schatz is a former Lincoln winner (’16). Williams Grove is Schatz’ winningest track in World of Outlaws competition with 21 of his 307 career triumphs coming at the half mile.GRAVEL AT THE GROVE: After a DNF a week and a half ago in Haubstadt, David Gravel rebounded at Eldora with a fifth and a third – the best performance among the top three in points. Gravel entered Eldora 48 points behind the top spot, and now he’s only 28 markers down. The weekend races at Williams Grove will be a pair Gravel hopes to capitalize on to continue making up ground. The Watertown, CT native has won eight times at the Mechanicsburg half mile – the most he’s claimed at any track with the World of Outlaws.Gravel hasn’t won at “The Grove” since 2020, but he hasn’t finished worse than seventh in his last six starts.MACEDO’S MISSTEP: This past Saturday at Eldora, Carson Macedo missed the top 10 for the first time all season with a 13th. The result cost him the top spot in points, but he’s only two markers behind Sweet.Pennsylvania has been kind to the Californian over the years – a trend he hopes continues as he looks to regain control of the standings.Macedo has won at Lincoln with both the All-Star Circuit of Champions and locally. In his last four World of Outlaws starts at the 3/8 mile, he’s finished no worse than sixth. At Williams Grove, he’s a two-time World of Outlaws winner – topping the Morgan Cup opener and National Open finale in ’21.ALLEN EYES REPEAT: Last May, Jacob Allen scored arguably the biggest win of his career to date when he took the checkered flag at the Gettysburg Clash to pocket $20,000. The Hanover, PA native turned Outlaw sent the crowd into a frenzy with the victory, and he’d love nothing more than to repeat on Wednesday. While the March visit didn’t go how he would’ve preferred with a 22nd place finish, Allen has still been strong in recent years in addition to last year’s victory. The driver of the Shark Racing #1A finished eighth at Lincoln in ’19 and third the next year.PLENTY OF POSSE: In addition to the favorites, Pennsylvania’s healthy Sprint Car landscape supplies many talents capable of running up front with The Greatest Show on Dirt.No conversation about the Posse is complete without Anthony Macri. “The Concrete Kid” has spent a lot of time away from the porch this year, but he’ll be a threat when the World of Outlaws invade his home territory. Of his nation-leading 23 victories last season, a combined five occurred at Lincoln and Williams Grove. The Posse have succeeded in making sure Williams Grove’s Morgan Cup stays in the host state in recent years. Three of the last four have been claimed by Pennsylvanians and five of the last seven.Lance Dewease, of Fayetteville, PA, has been the biggest contributor to that effort with Morgan Cup triumphs in 2016, 2018, and 2019.Brent Marks topped last year’s Morgan Cup to keep the Posse proud. “The Myerstown Missile” will be a threat to go back-to-back this weekend. Marks has already won at Williams Grove this season – claiming last month’s Tommy Hinnershitz Classic. Many of the Posse drivers can win at either facility, but a few especially stand out as favorites at Lincoln Speedway.Freddie Rahmer, of Salfordville, PA, has already picked up a trio of Lincoln triumphs this season including this past Saturday, and its home to his one World of Outlaws win (’18).Danny Dietrich earned his first pair of World of Outlaws wins at Lincoln in 2012 and 2013. The driver of the Gary Kauffman #48 is yet to tame Lincoln this season but does own three local podiums and finished sixth at the March World of Outlaws visit.HERSHEYPARK STADIUM SPRINT CAR EXPERIENCE: The action at Lincoln and Williams Grove won’t be the only fun in Pennsylvania this week.On Thursday during the day, five drivers will visit Milton Hershey School to partake in classroom activities. Brock Zearfoss, Carson Macedo, and Brent Marks will help in Engineering and Design classes. Gio Scelzi and Logan Schuchart will be in Automotive classes. Then, during the evening, at least 13 teams will help celebrate local racing history by displaying their cars at Hersheypark Stadium. The display will come 84 years to the day after the facility hosted its first race – a 28 car midget race that attracted more than 11,000 spectators. The display will take place from 4:30-7:00pm and is open to the public and free to attend. If you can’t make it to the track this week, catch all the action on DIRTVision.THIS WEEKEND AT A GLANCEWHEN AND WHEREWednesday, May 10 at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PAFriday-Saturday, May 12-13 at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PAON THE INTERNETWorld of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series

CORVETTE RACING AT LAGUNA SECA: 25 Years of Monterey Magic

Team seeking ninth win at Laguna Seca; Garcia to make 100th post-merger start DETROIT (May 9, 2023) – Corvette Racing will wrap up its two-race West Coast swing this weekend with what’s been an annual stop for the last quarter-century. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on the Monterey Peninsula will play host to America’s most successful sports car team for Sunday’s MOTUL Course de Monterey.
The two-hour, 40-minute race, set for 3 p.m. ET and airing live on NBC, is the third race of this year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Full-season teammates Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor will pilot the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in the GT Daytona (GTD PRO) class as the team goes for its ninth victory at WeatherTech Raceway.CORVETTE RACING MEDIA INFORMATION
Corvette Racing media information is updated and available ahead of this weekend’s race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Materials include:
· IMSA race advance and quotes· Corvette Racing stats and figures· Corvette Racing racecar comparisons· Corvette Racing Fast Facts· Driver biographies
This is the 25th straight year that Corvette Racing has visited the 2.238-mile, 11-turn circuit just off the Pacific Ocean. The track is one of two where the program has raced in each of its previous 24 years – Sebring is the other – with Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta joining the list at the end of the season.
This weekend also marks another important milestone: Garcia will become the first driver in the WeatherTech Championship to make 100 starts in the series since the start of the post-merger era in 2014 when the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM joined together for one American sports car championship.
CORVETTE RACING / CADILLAC RACING MEDIA ADVISORYAhead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Corvette Racing WEC driver Ben Keating (No. 33 Corvette C8.R), Corvette Racing IMSA driver Jordan Taylor (Garage 56 Chevrolet Camaro reserve driver), and GM Sports Car Racing Program Manager Laura Wontrop Klauser will be part of a GM Motorsports pre-Le Mans media availability at 2:15 p.m. PT on Friday, May 12, at the WeatherTech Raceway Media Center. Members of the Cadillac Racing Action Express team also will be available.
Since that time, Garcia has won 20 races – including in 2014 at Laguna Seca – and four championships… all with Corvette Racing.
He and Taylor hope to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish in GTD PRO. This time around, the Corvette program has a year’s worth of car and tire data to fall back on following its inaugural season in the class during 2022 with a modified version of the mid-engine Corvette C8.R.
ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “We have made good progress with our car since we were last at Laguna a year ago. There is data we can look at for tire wear and performance, plus we have some correlation from our simulator to help. Last year we did lead early thanks to some luck and strategy, but it was clear we didn’t have the pace to compete. I’m hoping this year is better.”(Making 100th start post-merger): “It doesn’t seem like it should be my 100th IMSA race! I have always said that racing in America is a lot of fun because of the tracks, the fans and the competition. It’s a lot of time away from home, but I feel like I have a second family with Corvette Racing, who I’ve been with since 2009. I am fortunate to have had a lot of great teammates and great races with many wins and championships in this series with I hope more to come.”
JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “I’m looking forward to Laguna Seca. We didn’t have great pace there last year, but it was also early on in our development with this car on this tire. I feel like since that event we’ve made some big gains which we saw late last year and even in Long Beach and Sebring this year. Our guys have been nailing everything in the pits and strategy the last few events, so hopefully we can be a contender for the win.”

IMSA preview: Cadillac seeks some Monterey magic

Two Cadillac V-Series.Rs to challenge for GTP victory in conclusion of West Coast swing
DETROIT (May 9, 2023) – Pipo Derani says it’s time to take the next step. Two steps to be precise.
The co-driver of the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-Series.R has stood on the third-place tier of the podium in each of the past four IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. This weekend, in the MOTUL Course de Monterey, Derani and Alexander Sims will seek to deliver the team’s second victory of the season in the Grand Touring Prototype class.
The two-hour, 40-minute race on the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course marks the 25th consecutive year that IMSA is racing at the track on the Monterey Peninsula and the first for the GTP class that has expanded to nine racecars since last month’s Grand Prix of Long Beach.
The track, with signature Corkscrew turn, will pose another test for all GTP teams as they continue to learn the nuances of their hybrid racecars.
“It’s always a very challenging track with the lack of grip and ups and downs, so it’ll be interesting to see how the new cars react,” said Derani, who joined forces with Sims and Jack Aitken to win the Twelve Hours of Sebring in March.

Cadillac leads the GTP Manufacturer Championship standings and the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-Series.R is one point out of the lead in the GTP Team and Driver Championship.
The sister No. 01 Cadillac V-Series.R, co-driven by Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande, will aim to get untracked after disappointing outings at Sebring and Long Beach.
NBC will televise the race at 3 p.m. ET Sunday, with streaming in the U.S. on Peacock and outside the U.S. on IMSA.com/TVLive. Qualifying will be streamed on IMSA.com/TVLive at 3:50 p.m. ET Saturday. All sessions will be broadcast on IMSA.com and RadioLeMans.com. SiriusXM live race coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. (XM 207, Web/App 992).

What they’re saying
No. 01 Cadillac V-Series.R
Renger van der Zande: “Laguna Seca is a special one; the highlight of my season because of the highlight of my career with the move in the Corkscrew which elevated me in the top class basically. It’s such a classic race. The tarmac is the same, so there will be a lot of tire deg, and the first time with the Cadillac GTP car so that’s going to be interesting setup-wise. There’s a lot to learn about the car still and I think Laguna Seca is another step in that direction and bringing it forward from there.” Sebastien Bourdais: “We haven’t had the results that we were hoping for so we’re looking to rebound at Laguna Seca. It’s a really fun track when you can get the car in the window. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to repave the track as we were all expecting, which is going to put a really strong point on tire management. Tire deg is incredibly high on that surface. We know we have challenges ahead. Nothing has really changed on the BoP, so we’ll have to work really hard to be on top. As with every weekend, it’s going to be a fight with the other manufacturers. That’s what makes it fun and hope we can bring the 01 Cadillac to the front and have a great weekend and turn this thing around before Le Mans.”
No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-Series.R
Alexander Sims: “Looking forward to just driving the track and trying to get our teeth stuck into understanding how these GTP cars can work best around there. We’re embarking on an unknown journey at each of these circuits that we go to. We sort of do the simulator work, and the engineers have a certain expectation of what it should be in terms of competitiveness for us. Once we’re on the ground, the circuit conditions are inevitably slightly different to what one expects. We have to adapt and try to optimize our package as quickly as possible while still working on the fundamental development of this car as well because we are still in the early stages of development.”
Pipo Derani: “We have seen this year that some tracks that we were stronger with the DPi compared to our competition, such as Sebring and Long Beach, with the new regulation that advantage has vanished. With that in mind, we are hoping that the advantage that our competitors had in Laguna also goes away and we find ourselves with a chance of winning at Laguna. It’s always a very challenging track with the lack of grip and ups and downs, so it’ll be interesting to see how the new cars react to that. Hoping to have a more straightforward strategy this time around compared to Long Beach and not have our results and faith be dependent on a yellow.”

Dominic Scelzi Aiming to Keep Momentum Rolling at Peter Murphy Classic

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (May 8, 2023) – Mother Nature didn’t play nice last weekend, wiping out a pair of races during the 11th annual David Tarter Memorial at Silver Dollar Speedway for Dominic Scelzi.

A busy weekend is on tap for the Scelzi Motorsports driver, who will do double duty on Friday and Saturday at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Classic., during the Peter Murphy Classic. Scelzi will race with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series each night as well as in a 360ci winged sprint car with the Kings of Thunder on Friday and the Sprint Car Challenge Tour on Saturday.

“The Peter Murphy Classic is a special event to me and our family,” he said. “Peter has always been a great friend and ambassador of the sport so it means a lot to run well during his event.”

Scelzi has been successful both during the Peter Murphy Classic as well as at Kings Speedway, where he placed fifth during the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series season opener last month.

Scelzi earned a half dozen feature wins at Kings Speedway in 2021 and he was victorious there once last year, when he posted seven top-five performances.

The last two years have been filled with memorable Peter Murphy Classic moments for Scelzi, who swept the weekend in 2021 – winning the 410 and 360 main event each night during the doubleheader – and won both of the 410 features during the two-day event last year.

“Weekends like those are ones you dream about,” he said. “To sweep both nights in 2021 and then both 410 features last year during the Peter Murphy Classic will always stay with me as special moments in my racing career.”

SEASON STATS –

8 races, 2 wins, 6 top fives, 7 top 10s, 7 top 15s, 8 top 20s

GUIDE TO SUCCESS: From Refrigerator Mechanic to World of Outlaws Driver, Brock Zearfoss Bringing Life Journey to Milton Hershey School Students

HERSHEY, PA (May 8, 2023) – When Brock Zearfoss quit his job as a refrigerator mechanic to start his racing career, he leaned on veteran driver Greg Hodnett to mentor him through that journey.

Now, the Jonestown, PA driver has the opportunity to provide that same support for Pennsylvania students trying to navigate their own journeys.

Through his and the World of Outlaws’ partnership with the Milton Hershey School (MHS), Zearfoss, and other Sprint Car drivers, will visit the school to speak with students on May 11 and welcome a student as an honorary crew member at Williams Grove Speedway on May 13.

Milton Hershey School – founded by Milton S. Hershey – is one of the world’s best private schools, where qualifying pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students live on campus and receive an exceptional education with top-tier classes and facilities—with all costs covered.

This is Zearfoss’ second straight year of working with the MHS students. Last year, student Rayshawn Shuler join his team as an honorary crew member during the National Open in October.

“It was a cool experience for both ends I think,” Zearfoss said. “Rayshawn was a big help for us. Just cool to see the excitement he had to join us and be a part of our team for the night. It’s important to engage kids into racing. It’s a cool opportunity Milton Hershey gave Rashawn and the other kids involved and got a chance to go to the races and be a part of teams that night. It is something he still talks about, even a year later. Hopefully we can continue doing something like that.”

That wasn’t the first time Zearfoss has worked with Hershey, though. While working as a refrigerator mechanic – before his racing career – servicing compressors, and dealing with anhydrous ammonia, part of his job involved working on compressors for The Hershey Company. Now, full circle, Zearfoss gets to use his story of quitting that job to follow his dream of being a race car driver as inspiration for the students to follow their own goals.

“[Hopefully] spark an interest or help them understand it is OK to not really know what you want to do,” Zearfoss said. “As long as you have goals, you can achieve whatever you want. It’s all about hard work. Just trying to present the right mindset for kids. I never thought I’d be like what we’re doing right now. Fortunate to be in that situation.”

Along with talking about career focused initiatives, Zearfoss brings another unique perspective as an entrepreneur. Having run his own team for the majority of his career – and entire World of Outlaws career – Zearfoss brings a unique perspective of what it takes to build, run and maintain a business.

“I deal with all the behind-the-scenes stuff too,” Zearfoss said. “It’s just a different way of approaching it. It’s a little more of an entrepreneurship. I think it gives me a little extra to talk about with the kids if they have a dream of owning their own business or something… Just gives me a little bit extra to talk about. The kids that are interested in being an entrepreneur, it might be helpful for them.”

He, along with Carson Macedo, Giovanni Scelzi, Logan Schuchart, and Brent Marks, will visit with the students in the afternoon before going several more drivers at Hersheypark Stadium – initially known as Hershey Stadium Speedway – for the inaugural Hershey Sprint Car Experience. The event (May 11 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.), which is free to everyone, and features meet-and-greets with the drivers, honors the 84th anniversary of the stadium’s racetrack opening.

Then, on Saturday, during the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove, Zearfoss and three other drivers will welcome a student for a hands-on opportunity as an honorary crew member.

“The kids, they’re going to be all ears,” Zearfoss said. “They’re going to be excited. The last time we were there you could see the excitement in the kids’ eyes, whether it was the young kids in the fourth grade or the seniors. It didn’t matter what age they were. They were all excited to see us and see the race cars. Getting excitement in the kids’ faces and getting them engaged around the race car and just engaged in general.

“It’s all about being positive and having a positive mindset for the kids and just encouraging them to do good in life and succeed. If we can come out of the day by doing that and getting the kids engaged and really enjoying what they do and looking forward to succeeding in life and in school, that’s all we can really ask for.”

TJ ZIZZO BRINGS NEW CAR, SAME ATTITUDE TO GERBER COLLISION AND GLASS NHRA NATIONALS

CHICAGO (May 8, 2023) – When fan favorite TJ Zizzo made his final pass at the 2021 NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis, the second-generation Top Fuel driver knew he needed to make a change if he was going to seriously chase his dream. Zizzo has passionately worked and fought to make a name for himself battling the biggest stars in the NHRA for the past three decades. His efforts have paid off to a limited degree with a strong fan following and a final round appearance in 2020. The return of professional drag racing to Rt. 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. for the Gerber Collision and Glass Rt. 66 NHRA Nationals, May 19-21, has provided Zizzo and his Rust-Oleum backed Top Fuel dragster team, known across the sport as the Rust-Oleum Rocket, the chance to keep the dream alive.

“It’s great to go out to my hometown track again,” said Zizzo. “We haven’t competed there since 2019 and my phone has been ringing off the hook since news came out that the Gerber Collision and Glass Nationals were coming back to town. That’s a big deal to us since so many of our marketing partners are from the Chicagoland area. My family and friends can all go to the races.”

One of the latest elements for Zizzo will be the addition of a new race car thanks to a generous offer by NHRA Hall of Fame driver and team owner, Don Schumacher. For years, Zizzo and his team competed on a budget repurposing quality parts and chassis to race with the better funded teams. They made a gallant effort and saw flashes of success. Zizzo feels like his career could now be turning a corner with an updated Top Fuel dragster.

“After St. Louis 2021, we knew we couldn’t keep up with the best in the sport anymore,” said Zizzo. “We really tried hard with our older equipment and car but we knew we needed to change. Don Schumacher reached out to us and offered to build a car that could be competitive.”

The commitment and rededication to racing was not an easy decision for Zizzo, who also owns and operates a thriving auto body and paint business outside of Chicago. He had been able to keep his quality team of crew members intact but investing in a race team was not a decision he took lightly. Luckily, he had the support of his family, his team and long-time marketing partners like Rust-Oleum.

“I hesitated for a long time and it was actually my son, Nick, and my dad, Tony, who ultimately made the decision for us to say, ‘Let’s go ahead and do this’ so we could compete at the very highest level. I also couldn’t have done this without the support and encouragement of my team,” said Zizzo. “Getting everything right goes beyond the parts when it comes to making a difference. In fact, it took us a solid year to get this car ready to go out here and pass. We haven’t had a chance in my entire 30-plus years of driving to have the same equipment that our competitors have. We’ve always been a little behind.”

Recently the team tested at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Indianapolis and Zizzo was very pleased with the results. The 12,000-horsepower Rust-Oleum Top Fuel dragster made quick and consistent passes that gave the team the confidence to make the commitment to race in Chicago.

“It was amazing. Just standing on the gas to do a burnout in one of these cars is exciting,” said Zizzo. “There are all new sights and sounds in this Rust-Oleum Top Fuel dragster and it felt fantastic. This car just went straight down the racetrack. Our old car never did that. I can’t wait to get to Joliet and see what we can do.”

Top Fuel qualifying begins on Friday, May 19, and continues Saturday, May 20. Zizzo and the Rust-Oleum Rocket team will once again host a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning in their pit area which will be a welcome addition to race festivities. Final eliminations for the 16 quickest Top Fuel dragsters will take place on Sunday, May 21 and the race will be broadcast nationally on FS1. Fans can buy tickets to see Zizzo and the Rust-Oleum Top Fuel dragster at www.nhra.com.

Burton Finishes 30th at Kansas

May 8, 2023

A strong mid-race surge for Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team ended with a Lap 192 spin that relegated Burton and the team to a 30th-place finish in Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Burton started the 400-mile race from 25th place and ran inside the top 20 for a time before ending the first 80-lap Stage where he started, but one lap down.

In the second 80-lap Stage the Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew rejoined the lead lap by taking the wave-around after a caution period for a spin by Aric Almirola at Lap 139. A caution six laps after the restart allowed the team to make a much-needed pit stop, and Burton ended the Stage in 22nd place.

In the third segment of the race, Burton raced his way inside the top 15 and ran as high as 11th, but dropped just outside the top 15 just before bringing out the yellow flag with a spin as he tried to avoid another car with just over 70 laps left to run.

Three laps were lost as the crew repaired a damaged toe link on the No. 21 Mustang, and Burton rejoined the race in 30th place. He held that spot for the remainder of the race.

The No. 21 team now turns its attention to Darlington Raceway’s throwback weekend and next Sunday’s Goodyear 400.

Denny Hamlin (Toyota)2. Kyle Larson (Chevrolet)3. William Byron (Chevrolet)4. Bubba Wallace (Toyota)5. Ross Chastain (Chevrolet)
The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season continues at Darlington Raceway with the Goodyear 400 on Sunday, May 14, at 3 p.m. ET. Live coverage can be found on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
TEAM CHEVY POST-RACE QUOTES:Ross Chastain, No. 1 AdventHealth Camaro ZL1Finished: 5th There’s a lot of physical racing out there today, Ross. Like, I mean, there’s lots of contact through the field. What do you attribute that to?“I think everybody is evolving the new car. It’s not so new and we’ve got a good handle on it. There’s times where we’re running 20th-ish and I can’t get by people. Then a couple of restarts and some good adjustments by Phil Surgen and the boys and girls at Trackhouse, we’re back up there fighting for a top-five. Yeah, it’s some of the best drivers in the world and totally equal cars, and putting on heck of good racing.”
Knowing you guys are coming back here for the Playoffs, seeing how aggressive everything was today, do you expect that same level of intensity when you’re back here.“The main thing I’ll focus on is getting our car faster for us and our Advent Health Chevy. It’s still lacking a bit of grip. If we can get the balance good, I feel like we can go. That last run we about nailed it the best we were all day. So, proud of the boys and girls at Trackhouse to do that because that was the money stop and money adjustment. We just need more raw speed and grip. I’m just sliding the front, or the back, too much. Aside from everything else, that’s what I’ll focus on between now and the fall.”
Kyle Larson, No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1Finished: 2nd “I was really loose. I was trying to do what I could to manage it. I was really loose at that end and, yeah, (Denny Hamlin) was just a little better than me at the end. I haven’t seen a replay either, but obviously, he was side-drafting really aggressively like he would but he was touching me, it felt like. It just had me out of control, so I wish we could see what we could do.”

Kyle Busch, No. 8 Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Camaro ZL1Sidelined by damage sustained in an accident at the conclusion of Stage Two. Finished: 35th Kyle, what happened out there? “Just tried to get below the No. 6 (Brad Keselowski) off of (turn) two. I wasn’t quite clear, got clipped and spun out. I feel bad for my guys. We’ve been fighting hard all day long to get ourselves up there and get further up with track position. We finally got it and then all of the cautions kind of came to kind of throw off strategy. We weren’t able to get stage points and then ruined our race there with getting clipped. Just bad luck situations. A lot of guys up there on older tires – you’re trying to get by them, make the most of your stage and then stuff like this keeps happening.”
Chase Elliott, No. 9 UniFirst Camaro ZL1Finished: 7th “I feel fine. We didn’t really show it with the results, but I was excited about how the day went for our No. 9 UniFirst Chevy team. We had a couple of high spots. Got the lead there when we were racing with Kyle (Larson). That’s better than normal for me, so we’ll just try to build on that and get better.
We fired off tight there a couple of times and then lost the track position. I thought we were pretty decent again that last run. Ryan (Blaney) and I got together off (turn) four and I hit him pretty good with my right-front, and I don’t think that was doing me any favors.”

AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Action Industries Camaro ZL1Finished: 14th “I felt like we fought hard all day. We got the car closer overall, but we were still kind of fighting back and forth between loose and tight. The No. 16 Action Industries crew did a good job on strategy, making adjustments, and our pitstops were really good. We were able to get some stage points as well. Today was definitely something we can build on.”

William Byron, No. 24 Liberty University Camaro ZL1Finished: 3rd“It was an amazing effort by our No. 24 Liberty University Chevy team. We all but wrecked twice, went three laps down and came back to finish third – it’s just incredible. It’s just a testament to the strength of this race team. The tail wasn’t exactly right there at the end. It was knocked over and the car was really loose towards the end of any longer run. A tough situation, but really happy with that effort. Just a great job by this whole Liberty University Chevy team. They gave us a really hard fight, so good to come home third.”
Justin Haley, No. 31 Celsius Camaro ZL1Finished: 18th “We had an up and down day today. We fired off a little tight, but I was pretty optimistic about our No. 31 Celsius Camaro ZL1. Unfortunately, some pit road issues and a flat tire were indicative of our day. My crew chief, Trent (Owens), had a great strategy to get us back on the lead lap, but I felt like the flat tire did some damage early on to the splitter, so we just struggled the rest of the race. We will take a top 20 and head to Darlington next week where we had a great run last year.”

Erik Jones, No. 43 Allegiant Camaro ZL1Finished: 21st “It was an okay day for the No. 43 Allegiant Chevy team. Just kind of up and down and kind of a lot of chaos. Got wrecked and ended up just finishing farther back than we wanted. We’ll take it, learn from it, and hopefully be better for next week.”
TEAM CHEVY RACE HIGHLIGHTS:
Stage One
·       Team Chevy drivers took the top-three starting positions in today’s NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway, led by William Byron and the No. 24 Liberty University Camaro ZL1 team from the pole position. ·       Outside front-row starter Kyle Larson drove his No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1 to the lead on lap five, but was spun while making the pass on the frontstretch, bringing out the first caution of the race. Making no contact with the wall, Larson was able to come down pit road for four tires and fuel, ultimately restarting at the tail end of the field.
·       Running steady in the top-10, Byron started the green-flag pit cycle on lap 36 with crew chief Rudy Fugle calling Byron down pit road for four tires, fuel and a round of chassis and air pressure adjustments. Byron was hit with a speeding penalty on pit road entry, forcing the No. 24 Liberty University Camaro ZL1 team to return to pit road for a pass-through.
·       The green-white checkered flew on lap 80 marking the end of Stage One. Daniel Suarez led Team Chevy at the end of the stage in the fifth position.
·       After restarting in 36th after an early-race accident, Larson drove his No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1 back up to a 10th-place finish in Stage One.
·       Team Chevy Stage One: Top-105th      Daniel Suarez, No. 99 Worldwide Express Camaro ZL19th      Ross Chastain, No. 1 AdventHealth Camaro ZL110th    Kyle Larson, No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1.

Stage Two

·       The No. 48 Ally Camaro ZL1 substitute driver Josh Berry entered the top-10 early in Stage Two. Running steady in the top-10, a multi-car accident took place, involving Team Chevy’s Berry and Erik Jones. Both teams were able to make repairs to their Camaro ZL1’s to return to competition.
·       Nearing the end of Stage Two, a caution flew on lap 159 to setup a three-lap dash to the end of the stage. With pit strategy coming into play, a handful of drivers came down pit road, while others opted to stay out for track position.
·       Battling back from an early pit road penalty, crew chief Randall Burnett called Kyle Busch down pit road for a four-tire stop, putting the No. 8 Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Camaro ZL1 in the 15th-position for the restart.
·       In the three-lap race to the end of Stage Two, Busch was turned down the backstretch, sustaining damage from contact with the inside wall that ultimately ended the team’s day. The caution – the seventh of the day – brought the race to the conclusion of Stage Two.
·       The top-nine drivers who opted not to pit at the earlier caution were able to gain valuable stage points from track position gained through pit strategy, including LEGACY MOTOR CLUB teammates Noah Gragson (third) and Erik Jones (fourth), and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon (seventh).
·       Team Chevy Stage Two: Top-103rd      Noah Gragson, No. 42 Sunseeker Resorts Camaro ZL14th      Erik Jones, No. 43 Allegiant Camaro ZL17th      Austin Dillon, No. 3 BetMGM Camaro ZL19th      Kyle Larson, No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1

·       In 12 points-paying NASCAR Cup Series races complete, Chevrolet continues to lead the series in wins (seven), top-fives (28) and top-10s (51).

pETER MURPHY CLASSIC: BIG MONEY ON THE LINE FOR THE NARC SPRINT CARS THIS WEEKEND

(5/8/23) Hanford, CA … The NARC 410 Sprint Car Racing Series, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, will head to Kings Speedway on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13th for the highly-anticipated Peter Murphy Classic.  This will be the second trip of the season to the exciting 3/8-mile clay oval located in Hanford, CA. Up for grabs will be a stout $11,000 payday to the winner of Saturday night’s 30-lap headliner finale.   With that kind of money on the line, this two-day extravaganza will reel in the full NARC roster and attract some heavy hitters from outside the region.

“I’m so excited for this weekend,” commented Peter Murphy, promoter of Kings Speedway, “This is a major collaboration with my team here at Kings and all the wonderful sponsors and supporters that contribute to making it happen. It’s always great to have NARC in town; this place has done some fantastic contests. This is a weekend you do not want to miss, and make sure to BRING A FRIEND!

Originating in 2015, The Peter Murphy Classic, or PMC, is a race honoring Kings Speedway promoter Peter Murphy. Murphy is originally from the Sydney, New South Wales, Australia area but now calls Clovis home. He’s achieved eight NARC 410 Sprint Series wins from 2001 to 2013. Wins with the series include the 2011 Tribute to Gary Patterson and Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial. Murphy has also had a decorated career in Non-Wing competitions throughout the Central Valley.

Friday’s show will also feature the Kings of Thunder 360 sprint cars.  The Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360’s will join the program on Saturday.

Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi is the defending champion of the event after sweeping both nights in an intense open wheel battle in 2022.  The timing of the Peter Murphy Classic might be perfect as Scelzi added his name to the 2023 NARC winner’s list for the first time two-weeks ago at Antioch Speedway. That ended an uncharacteristic long winless streak dating back to May 2022 for the 20-time NARC winner.

“Momentum doesn’t always mean success, but I feel we have to be one of the favorites every single night,” said Scelzi, the two-time defending NARC champion.  “Even if we start deep (in the field), we’ve shown we can win and contend every night.”

“The Peter Murphy Classic has been great for us as we’ve won the last four Peter Murphy 410 races,” Scelzi continued. “We got them both in 2021 and 2022. I just feel confident the more money on the line and the hotter the weather.  My 41 team is ready to go.”

With temperatures expected to be in the 80’s, Scelzi has all the incentives needed to continue his domination of the event.

Other previous winners of the Peter Murphy Classic include Campbell’s Bud Kaeding, Shane Golobic of Fremont, Rutherford’s Rico Abreu, and Texas driver Aaron Reutzel.

A full field of cars is expected to chase the lucrative purse which includes a guaranteed $1000 in starting money for Saturday’s A-Main.

Who to Watch

Current NARC 410 Sprint Car Series championship point leader Corey Day returns to Kings after his triumphant efforts at April 8th NARC season opener at the track. The Clovis teenager has yet to finish off the podium in 2023 and is on a streak of two consecutive second-place results.  He currently holds a 562-549 point advantage over Aromas driver Justin Sanders.  Scelzi is another two points behind.

Jonathan Allard is expected to make his 2023 debut with the NARC series. The three-time series champion, originally from Chico and now calling Waimauku, Auckland, New Zealand home, has four Kings Speedway wins since 2001, including last year’s Morrie Williams Memorial.  He has 41 NARC King of the West victories on his career resume.

Hanford’s D.J. Netto is always a threat to win on his home track.  The 2019 series champion has already enjoyed a pair of 360 victories this season and hopes to carry that hot streak to his first PMC win.  He has six NARC wins to this credit.

Even though Roseville’s Colby Copeland is not chasing NARC championship points, he is a driver to be watched at Kings Speedway.  He “quietly” finished in the runner-up spot at both events of the Peter Murphy Classic last season and always steps up his game at big shows.

Also looking to pocket a big payday are Chase Johnson of Penngrove, Dennis Roth Classic winner Justyn Cox from Roseville, Ryan Bernal from Hollister, current Rookie of the Year point leader Joey Ancona of Concord, Oakley teenager Dylan Bloomfield, Campbell veteran Bud Kaeding, Kaleb Montgomery of Templeton, Sebastopol’s Joel Myers Jr., Tanner Holmes from Oregon, Tucson, Arizona’s Nick Parker, Benicia’s Billy Aton, Sparks, Nevada traveler Bill Smith, and many more!
