Veteran Corvette ace will become first IMSA driver to make 100th post-merger start

DETROIT (May 10, 2023) – It’s a very special weekend for Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia. With the green flag for Sunday’s MOTUL Course de Monterey, the No. 3 Corvette C8.R ace driver will become the first driver in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship to make 100 starts in the series since the start of the post-merger era in 2014 when the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM joined together for one American sports car championship. Garcia and Jordan Taylor will share the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette as they have since 2020. All of Garcia’s previous 99 IMSA starts have come in a Corvette. To mark Sunday’s milestone start at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, we asked Garcia for three of his most memorable races in the series. So without further delay…

1. Sebring 2017“My best race with Corvette? I think so. We struggled through much of the race but the car came alive with three hours left when I got in. It was like driving blind because the windscreen was so bad! But I knew I had to start passing cars if we wanted to win.”

2. Daytona 2021“I remember this for many reasons. My grandfather and my manager Adrian Campos passed away a few days before. So I really wanted to win that one, and we managed it! But I had a false positive COVID test with four hours to go in the race and had to watch the end from a parking lot outside the track. Definitely a day I will never forget, but I’m happy it ended with a win and a watch!”

3. VIR 2018“I tore the ACL in my knee literally three minutes before having to drive the car to the grid. The pain was really bad and it was a tough hour driving. Jan did an amazing job to finish P2 and move us into the points lead. I’m glad my injury didn’t compromise that race or the following, winning another championship with Jan and Corvette Racing.”

The popular World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series events will see the iconic auto parts brand featured around the tracks in addition to the Federated Car Care Work Zone, which is at every World of Outlaws event.

THE MAIN EVENT – FIA/FIM European Drag Racing ChampionshipsSanta Pod RacewayFri.26 – Mon.29 May 2023  0-100mph in less than a second… 300mph at the finish line… more horsepower unleashed by two cars than by an entire F1 grid… Top Fuel Dragsters are back in force at Santa Pod.   Six of the world’s most powerful racing cars headline The Main Event when Santa Pod hosts the opening round of 2023’s FIA/FIM European Drag Racing Championships. It will be Europe’s largest Top Fuel gathering since Covid swept the board.   It’s an equal-opportunity contest too, with three female and three male drivers battling for victory honours and an early points lead in the five-race international championship series. Women drivers hold both European records: Finland’s Ida Zetterström is the continent’s quickest, at 3.782 seconds over the modern 1,000-foot course, and Switzerland’s Jndia Erbacher the fastest at 318.96mph across the finish line. Yet Sweden’s Susanne Callin heads the form book, bidding for a victory hat-trick in Santa Pod’s own Slick Tricks Racing dragster having won 2022’s last two races, at Hockenheim in Germany and at Santa Pod’s European Finals.   Amongst the male trio, a footnote in history beckons. When Duncan Micallef hits the track, it will be the first time that a serving head of a national motorsport organisation has drag raced. ‘The Maltese Lion’ was already a Top Fuel star, and 2017’s European champion, when elected President of the Malta Motorsport Federation in 2020. Having made exhibition runs for his home audience, Micallef returns to international competition for the first time since 2018. Denmark’s Stig Neergaard – ‘The Real Stig’ – is a Top Fuel veteran of no fewer than 12 final-round appearances, four with winning outcomes, while recent Swedish entrant Dennis Nilsson is the only contestant yet to clock a magic, 3-second, 300mph pass.   Free paddock access allows spectators a close-up view of the pit crews preparing these ground-shaking machines, and all the other, near-250 entries on two wheels and four as European drag racing’s post-Covid revival continues to build.   A 16-car field of Pro Modifieds contests the opening FIA Pro Mod Championship round and the second round of the Motorsport UK British Drag Racing Championship, two separate championship rounds combined in a single race. Sweden’s Jan Ericsson was a relative newcomer to the class when he became FIA champion in 2019, then promptly won it again when the title chase resumed last year after the two-season Covid break.   While Jan Ericsson eyes a third crown, his compatriot Michael Gullqvist sets out in search of his eighth. The mantle of dominance once worn by Gullqvist appears to have passed to Ericsson. Or has it? Two other Swedish veterans will be eager for a say in the matter, and both drive unique machines. 2009 FIA champion Mats Eriksson’s 1956 Ford Crown Victoria looks unlike any other Pro Mod around. Fredrik Fagerström’s is unlike any other: the 1966 Chevrolet pickup truck has the aerodynamic attributes of a brick but punches through the air to 5.9-second, 240mph effect, and his flamboyant burnouts and high-speed returns bring the crowds to their feet.   On the home front, Bobby Wallace is on a roll. The Bedford racer finished as runner-up to Jan Ericsson in last September’s European Finals before winning the next two Motorsport UK races, 2022’s National Finals and 2023’s opening round at this month’s Festival of Power. Wallace and perennial British champion Andy Robinson, from Hampshire, will lead the UK challenge but if Yorkshire veteran Wayne Nicholson can reproduce the 5.889sec/243.71mph form which earned him a maiden pole position at the Festival of Power, no one will discount him. Alongside British and Swedish entrants, racers from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Estonia complete the field.   Armed with similar, nitromethane-burning powerplants to their Top Fuel cousins, four colourful fuel Funny Cars will contest the opening stanza of the Funny Car Cup, while the Top Methanol class features Dragsters and Funnies competing together. Supporting them all is a full programme of Sportsman competition.   On two wheels, FIM-Europe competition includes Top Fuel Bikes, SuperTwin Bikes, Pro Stock Bikes and Super Street Bikes.   There are not many major motor races at which you will see children competing on the same programme as their adult peers, but Junior Dragster drivers and Junior Dragbikers are all part of the show. BATAVIA, Ohio (May 9, 2023) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will take on two tracks new to the tour this weekend. The nation’s top dirt late model drivers will first visit Farmer City Raceway on Friday before tackling Fairbury Speedway on Saturday. On May 10-13, the Land of Lincoln will host the 2nd Annual Illinois Speedweek, a four-race swing beginning with Spoon River Speedway on May 10 before invading Lincoln Speedway on May 11. Each of those events, sanctioned by the FloRacing Night in America, features a $23,023-to-win / $1,000-to-start Super Late Model program. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will take center stage in Round No. 3 of the Illinois Speedweek with the tour’s first-ever stop at Farmer City Raceway. The Farmer City 74 presented by FloRacing will be a complete program for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, including Dirt Draft Hot Laps, Allstar Performance Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and a 74-lap, $25,000-to-win A-Main. The DIRTcar Modifieds ($2,000 to win) and Kids Modifieds will join the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series at Farmer City Raceway. Tyler Erb will return as the defending Farmer City 74 champion following a thriller in 2022. INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, May 9, 2023) – For the first time in the storied history of this iconic car model, a hardtop convertible Chevrolet Corvette Z06 will lead the field to the green flag for the 107th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, May 28 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The exterior and interior of the Corvette Z06 convertible will be on full display as the car fulfills responsibilities on and off the track. 

This is the first generation of Corvette Z06 to offer a hardtop convertible, greatly expanding the convertible’s ability to serve on track at any speed and provide open roof comfort on the street.

Corvette is the longest-running car nameplate in automotive industry history, so it’s no surprise Corvette has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” more times than any car. The 2023 race marks the 34th time for Chevrolet to pace dating back to 1948 and the 20th time overall and since 1978 for America’s favorite sports car.

The 2023 Corvette Z06 is set apart by its beating heart, the 5.5L LT6 which creates 670 horsepower, making it the highest-horsepower naturally aspirated V-8 ever to ever hit the market in any production car. All that power will be held to the track with the Carbon Aero package, providing 734 pounds of downforce at 186 mph, more than any other Corvette.

The four-time and defending titlist moved ahead of Carson Macedo following the action at Eldora Speedway.Lincoln Speedway presents an opportunity for Sweet to extend that advantage. During the March trip to the Pigeon Hills, Sweet led the opening 22 circuits in the Kasey Kahne Racing #49 before finishing in the runner-up position – his second podium in the last three Lincoln races.Williams Grove hasn’t been quite as kind to “The Big Cat” over the years, but he did manage to claim his first win there last July.SCHATZ SURGE: After a rough stretch with seven straight finishes outside the top 10, Donny Schatz rebounded in a big way at Eldora.Schatz put together his two best finishes of the season with a third on Friday and a runner-up on Saturday. During the latter, the Fargo, ND native managed to lead his first Feature lap of the season while challenging for the victory. The pair of nights bumped the 10-time champion from ninth to sixth in points.Now Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb Agajanian Racing team head to an area of the country that’s always been kind to them. Schatz is a former Lincoln winner (’16). Williams Grove is Schatz’ winningest track in World of Outlaws competition with 21 of his 307 career triumphs coming at the half mile.GRAVEL AT THE GROVE: After a DNF a week and a half ago in Haubstadt, David Gravel rebounded at Eldora with a fifth and a third – the best performance among the top three in points. Gravel entered Eldora 48 points behind the top spot, and now he’s only 28 markers down.The weekend races at Williams Grove will be a pair Gravel hopes to capitalize on to continue making up ground. The Watertown, CT native has won eight times at the Mechanicsburg half mile – the most he’s claimed at any track with the World of Outlaws.Gravel hasn’t won at “The Grove” since 2020, but he hasn’t finished worse than seventh in his last six starts.MACEDO’S MISSTEP: This past Saturday at Eldora, Carson Macedo missed the top 10 for the first time all season with a 13th. The result cost him the top spot in points, but he’s only two markers behind Sweet.Pennsylvania has been kind to the Californian over the years – a trend he hopes continues as he looks to regain control of the standings.Macedo has won at Lincoln with both the All-Star Circuit of Champions and locally. In his last four World of Outlaws starts at the 3/8 mile, he’s finished no worse than sixth. At Williams Grove, he’s a two-time World of Outlaws winner – topping the Morgan Cup opener and National Open finale in ’21.ALLEN EYES REPEAT: Last May, Jacob Allen scored arguably the biggest win of his career to date when he took the checkered flag at the Gettysburg Clash to pocket $20,000. The Hanover, PA native turned Outlaw sent the crowd into a frenzy with the victory, and he’d love nothing more than to repeat on Wednesday.While the March visit didn’t go how he would’ve preferred with a 22nd place finish, Allen has still been strong in recent years in addition to last year’s victory. The driver of the Shark Racing #1A finished eighth at Lincoln in ’19 and third the next year.PLENTY OF POSSE: In addition to the favorites, Pennsylvania’s healthy Sprint Car landscape supplies many talents capable of running up front with The Greatest Show on Dirt.No conversation about the Posse is complete without Anthony Macri. “The Concrete Kid” has spent a lot of time away from the porch this year, but he’ll be a threat when the World of Outlaws invade his home territory. Of his nation-leading 23 victories last season, a combined five occurred at Lincoln and Williams Grove.The Posse have succeeded in making sure Williams Grove’s Morgan Cup stays in the host state in recent years. Three of the last four have been claimed by Pennsylvanians and five of the last seven.Lance Dewease, of Fayetteville, PA, has been the biggest contributor to that effort with Morgan Cup triumphs in 2016, 2018, and 2019.Brent Marks topped last year’s Morgan Cup to keep the Posse proud. “The Myerstown Missile” will be a threat to go back-to-back this weekend. Marks has already won at Williams Grove this season – claiming last month’s Tommy Hinnershitz Classic.Many of the Posse drivers can win at either facility, but a few especially stand out as favorites at Lincoln Speedway.Freddie Rahmer, of Salfordville, PA, has already picked up a trio of Lincoln triumphs this season including this past Saturday, and its home to his one World of Outlaws win (’18).Danny Dietrich earned his first pair of World of Outlaws wins at Lincoln in 2012 and 2013. Team seeking ninth win at Laguna Seca; Garcia to make 100th post-merger start DETROIT (May 9, 2023) – Corvette Racing will wrap up its two-race West Coast swing this weekend with what’s been an annual stop for the last quarter-century. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on the Monterey Peninsula will play host to America’s most successful sports car team for Sunday’s MOTUL Course de Monterey.

The two-hour, 40-minute race, set for 3 p.m. ET and airing live on NBC, is the third race of this year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Full-season teammates Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor will pilot the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in the GT Daytona (GTD PRO) class as the team goes for its ninth victory at WeatherTech Raceway.

This is the 25th straight year that Corvette Racing has visited the 2.238-mile, 11-turn circuit just off the Pacific Ocean. The track is one of two where the program has raced in each of its previous 24 years – Sebring is the other – with Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta joining the list at the end of the season. This weekend also marks another important milestone: Garcia will become the first driver in the WeatherTech Championship to make 100 starts in the series since the start of the post-merger era in 2014 when the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM joined together for one American sports car championship.

Two Cadillac V-Series.Rs to challenge for GTP victory in conclusion of West Coast swing

DETROIT (May 9, 2023) – Pipo Derani says it’s time to take the next step. Two steps to be precise. The co-driver of the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-Series.R has stood on the third-place tier of the podium in each of the past four IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. This weekend, in the MOTUL Course de Monterey, Derani and Alexander Sims will seek to deliver the team’s second victory of the season in the Grand Touring Prototype class.

The two-hour, 40-minute race on the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course marks the 25th consecutive year that IMSA is racing at the track on the Monterey Peninsula and the first for the GTP class that has expanded to nine racecars since last month’s Grand Prix of Long Beach. The track, with signature Corkscrew turn, will pose another test for all GTP teams as they continue to learn the nuances of their hybrid racecars.  “It’s always a very challenging track with the lack of grip and ups and downs, so it’ll be interesting to see how the new cars react,” said Derani, who joined forces with Sims and Jack Aitken to win the Twelve Hours of Sebring in March.

No. 01 Cadillac V-Series.R Renger van der Zande: “Laguna Seca is a special one; the highlight of my season because of the highlight of my career with the move in the Corkscrew which elevated me in the top class basically. It’s such a classic race. The tarmac is the same, so there will be a lot of tire deg, and the first time with the Cadillac GTP car so that’s going to be interesting setup-wise. There’s a lot to learn about the car still and I think Laguna Seca is another step in that direction and bringing it forward from there.” Sebastien Bourdais: “We haven’t had the results that we were hoping for so we’re looking to rebound at Laguna Seca. It’s a really fun track when you can get the car in the window. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to repave the track as we were all expecting, which is going to put a really strong point on tire management. Tire deg is incredibly high on that surface. No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-Series.R Alexander Sims: “Looking forward to just driving the track and trying to get our teeth stuck into understanding how these GTP cars can work best around there. We’re embarking on an unknown journey at each of these circuits that we go to. We sort of do the simulator work, and the engineers have a certain expectation of what it should be in terms of competitiveness for us. Once we’re on the ground, the circuit conditions are inevitably slightly different to what one expects. We have to adapt and try to optimize our package as quickly as possible while still working on the fundamental development of this car as well because we are still in the early stages of development.” Pipo Derani: “We have seen this year that some tracks that we were stronger with the DPi compared to our competition, such as Sebring and Long Beach, with the new regulation that advantage has vanished. With that in mind, we are hoping that the advantage that our competitors had in Laguna also goes away and we find ourselves with a chance of winning at Laguna. It’s always a very challenging track with the lack of grip and ups and downs, so it’ll be interesting to see how the new cars react to that. Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (May 8, 2023) – Mother Nature didn’t play nice last weekend, wiping out a pair of races during the 11^th annual David Tarter Memorial at Silver Dollar Speedway for Dominic Scelzi.

A busy weekend is on tap for the Scelzi Motorsports driver, who will do double duty on Friday and Saturday at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Classic., during the Peter Murphy Classic. Scelzi will race with the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series each night as well as in a 360ci winged sprint car with the Kings of Thunder on Friday and the Sprint Car Challenge Tour on Saturday.

“The Peter Murphy Classic is a special event to me and our family,” he said. “Peter has always been a great friend and ambassador of the sport so it means a lot to run well during his event.”

Scelzi has been successful both during the Peter Murphy Classic as well as at Kings Speedway, where he placed fifth during the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series season opener last month.

Scelzi earned a half dozen feature wins at Kings Speedway in 2021 and he was victorious there once last year, when he posted seven top-five performances.

The last two years have been filled with memorable Peter Murphy Classic moments for Scelzi, who swept the weekend in 2021 – winning the 410 and 360 main event each night during the doubleheader – and won both of the 410 features during the two-day event last year.

“Weekends like those are ones you dream about,” he said. “To sweep both nights in 2021 and then both 410 features last year during the Peter Murphy Classic will always stay with me as special moments in my racing career.”

HERSHEY, PA (May 8, 2023) – When Brock Zearfoss quit his job as a refrigerator mechanic to start his racing career, he leaned on veteran driver Greg Hodnett to mentor him through that journey.

Now, the Jonestown, PA driver has the opportunity to provide that same support for Pennsylvania students trying to navigate their own journeys.

Through his and the World of Outlaws’ partnership with the Milton Hershey School (MHS), Zearfoss, and other Sprint Car drivers, will visit the school to speak with students on May 11 and welcome a student as an honorary crew member at Williams Grove Speedway on May 13.

Milton Hershey School – founded by Milton S. Hershey – is one of the world’s best private schools, where qualifying pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students live on campus and receive an exceptional education with top-tier classes and facilities—with all costs covered.

This is Zearfoss’ second straight year of working with the MHS students. Last year, student Rayshawn Shuler join his team as an honorary crew member during the National Open in October.

“It was a cool experience for both ends I think,” Zearfoss said. “Rayshawn was a big help for us. Just cool to see the excitement he had to join us and be a part of our team for the night. It’s important to engage kids into racing. It’s a cool opportunity Milton Hershey gave Rashawn and the other kids involved and got a chance to go to the races and be a part of teams that night. It is something he still talks about, even a year later. Hopefully we can continue doing something like that.”

That wasn’t the first time Zearfoss has worked with Hershey, though. While working as a refrigerator mechanic – before his racing career – servicing compressors, and dealing with anhydrous ammonia, part of his job involved working on compressors for The Hershey Company. Now, full circle, Zearfoss gets to use his story of quitting that job to follow his dream of being a race car driver as inspiration for the students to follow their own goals.

“[Hopefully] spark an interest or help them understand it is OK to not really know what you want to do,” Zearfoss said. “As long as you have goals, you can achieve whatever you want. It’s all about hard work. Just trying to present the right mindset for kids. I never thought I’d be like what we’re doing right now. Fortunate to be in that situation.”

Along with talking about career focused initiatives, Zearfoss brings another unique perspective as an entrepreneur. Having run his own team for the majority of his career – and entire World of Outlaws career – Zearfoss brings a unique perspective of what it takes to build, run and maintain a business.

“I deal with all the behind-the-scenes stuff too,” Zearfoss said. “It’s just a different way of approaching it. It’s a little more of an entrepreneurship. I think it gives me a little extra to talk about with the kids if they have a dream of owning their own business or something… Just gives me a little bit extra to talk about. The kids that are interested in being an entrepreneur, it might be helpful for them.”

He, along with Carson Macedo, Giovanni Scelzi, Logan Schuchart, and Brent Marks, will visit with the students in the afternoon before going several more drivers at Hersheypark Stadium – initially known as Hershey Stadium Speedway – for the inaugural Hershey Sprint Car Experience. The event (May 11 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.), which is free to everyone, and features meet-and-greets with the drivers, honors the 84th anniversary of the stadium’s racetrack opening.

Then, on Saturday, during the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove, Zearfoss and three other drivers will welcome a student for a hands-on opportunity as an honorary crew member.

“The kids, they’re going to be all ears,” Zearfoss said. “They’re going to be excited. The last time we were there you could see the excitement in the kids’ eyes, whether it was the young kids in the fourth grade or the seniors. It didn’t matter what age they were. They were all excited to see us and see the race cars. Getting excitement in the kids’ faces and getting them engaged around the race car and just engaged in general.

“It’s all about being positive and having a positive mindset for the kids and just encouraging them to do good in life and succeed. If we can come out of the day by doing that and getting the kids engaged and really enjoying what they do and looking forward to succeeding in life and in school, that’s all we can really ask for.”

CHICAGO (May 8, 2023) – When fan favorite TJ Zizzo made his final pass at the 2021 NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis, the second-generation Top Fuel driver knew he needed to make a change if he was going to seriously chase his dream. Zizzo has passionately worked and fought to make a name for himself battling the biggest stars in the NHRA for the past three decades. His efforts have paid off to a limited degree with a strong fan following and a final round appearance in 2020. The return of professional drag racing to Rt. 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. for the Gerber Collision and Glass Rt. 66 NHRA Nationals, May 19-21, has provided Zizzo and his Rust-Oleum backed Top Fuel dragster team, known across the sport as the Rust-Oleum Rocket, the chance to keep the dream alive.

“It’s great to go out to my hometown track again,” said Zizzo. “We haven’t competed there since 2019 and my phone has been ringing off the hook since news came out that the Gerber Collision and Glass Nationals were coming back to town. That’s a big deal to us since so many of our marketing partners are from the Chicagoland area. My family and friends can all go to the races.”

One of the latest elements for Zizzo will be the addition of a new race car thanks to a generous offer by NHRA Hall of Fame driver and team owner, Don Schumacher. For years, Zizzo and his team competed on a budget repurposing quality parts and chassis to race with the better funded teams. They made a gallant effort and saw flashes of success. Zizzo feels like his career could now be turning a corner with an updated Top Fuel dragster.

“After St. Louis 2021, we knew we couldn’t keep up with the best in the sport anymore,” said Zizzo. “We really tried hard with our older equipment and car but we knew we needed to change. Don Schumacher reached out to us and offered to build a car that could be competitive.”

The commitment and rededication to racing was not an easy decision for Zizzo, who also owns and operates a thriving auto body and paint business outside of Chicago. He had been able to keep his quality team of crew members intact but investing in a race team was not a decision he took lightly. Luckily, he had the support of his family, his team and long-time marketing partners like Rust-Oleum.

“I hesitated for a long time and it was actually my son, Nick, and my dad, Tony, who ultimately made the decision for us to say, ‘Let’s go ahead and do this’ so we could compete at the very highest level. I also couldn’t have done this without the support and encouragement of my team,” said Zizzo. “Getting everything right goes beyond the parts when it comes to making a difference. In fact, it took us a solid year to get this car ready to go out here and pass. We haven’t had a chance in my entire 30-plus years of driving to have the same equipment that our competitors have. We’ve always been a little behind.”

Recently the team tested at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Indianapolis and Zizzo was very pleased with the results. The 12,000-horsepower Rust-Oleum Top Fuel dragster made quick and consistent passes that gave the team the confidence to make the commitment to race in Chicago.

“It was amazing. Just standing on the gas to do a burnout in one of these cars is exciting,” said Zizzo. “There are all new sights and sounds in this Rust-Oleum Top Fuel dragster and it felt fantastic. This car just went straight down the racetrack. Our old car never did that. I can’t wait to get to Joliet and see what we can do.”

Top Fuel qualifying begins on Friday, May 19, and continues Saturday, May 20. Zizzo and the Rust-Oleum Rocket team will once again host a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning in their pit area which will be a welcome addition to race festivities. Final eliminations for the 16 quickest Top Fuel dragsters will take place on Sunday, May 21 and the race will be broadcast nationally on FS1. A strong mid-race surge for Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team ended with a Lap 192 spin that relegated Burton and the team to a 30^th-place finish in Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Burton started the 400-mile race from 25^th place and ran inside the top 20 for a time before ending the first 80-lap Stage where he started, but one lap down.

In the second 80-lap Stage the Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew rejoined the lead lap by taking the wave-around after a caution period for a spin by Aric Almirola at Lap 139. A caution six laps after the restart allowed the team to make a much-needed pit stop, and Burton ended the Stage in 22^nd place.

In the third segment of the race, Burton raced his way inside the top 15 and ran as high as 11^th, but dropped just outside the top 15 just before bringing out the yellow flag with a spin as he tried to avoid another car with just over 70 laps left to run.

Three laps were lost as the crew repaired a damaged toe link on the No. 21 Mustang, and Burton rejoined the race in 30^th place. He held that spot for the remainder of the race.

The No. 21 team now turns its attention to Darlington Raceway’s throwback weekend and next Sunday’s Goodyear 400.

We fired off tight there a couple of times and then lost the track position. I thought we were pretty decent again that last run. We got the car closer overall, but we were still kind of fighting back and forth between loose and tight. TEAM CHEVY RACE HIGHLIGHTS:  Stage One ·       Team Chevy drivers took the top-three starting positions in today’s NASCAR Cup Series AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway, led by William Byron and the No. 24 Liberty University Camaro ZL1 team from the pole position. ·       Outside front-row starter Kyle Larson drove his No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1 to the lead on lap five, but was spun while making the pass on the frontstretch, bringing out the first caution of the race. Making no contact with the wall, Larson was able to come down pit road for four tires and fuel, ultimately restarting at the tail end of the field.  ·       Running steady in the top-10, Byron started the green-flag pit cycle on lap 36 with crew chief Rudy Fugle calling Byron down pit road for four tires, fuel and a round of chassis and air pressure adjustments. (5/8/23) Hanford, CA … The NARC 410 Sprint Car Racing Series, presented by NAPA Auto Parts, will head to Kings Speedway on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13th for the highly-anticipated Peter Murphy Classic.  This will be the second trip of the season to the exciting 3/8-mile clay oval located in Hanford, CA. Up for grabs will be a stout $11,000 payday to the winner of Saturday night’s 30-lap headliner finale.   With that kind of money on the line, this two-day extravaganza will reel in the full NARC roster and attract some heavy hitters from outside the region.

“I’m so excited for this weekend,” commented Peter Murphy, promoter of Kings Speedway, “This is a major collaboration with my team here at Kings and all the wonderful sponsors and supporters that contribute to making it happen. Originating in 2015, The Peter Murphy Classic, or PMC, is a race honoring Kings Speedway promoter Peter Murphy. Murphy is originally from the Sydney, New South Wales, Australia area but now calls Clovis home. He’s achieved eight NARC 410 Sprint Series wins from 2001 to 2013. Wins with the series include the 2011 Tribute to Gary Patterson and Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial. Murphy has also had a decorated career in Non-Wing competitions throughout the Central Valley.

Friday’s show will also feature the Kings of Thunder 360 sprint cars.  The Sprint Car Challenge Tour 360’s will join the program on Saturday.

Fresno’s Dominic Scelzi is the defending champion of the event after sweeping both nights in an intense open wheel battle in 2022.  The timing of the Peter Murphy Classic might be perfect as Scelzi added his name to the 2023 NARC winner’s list for the first time two-weeks ago at Antioch Speedway. That ended an uncharacteristic long winless streak dating back to May 2022 for the 20-time NARC winner.

“Momentum doesn’t always mean success, but I feel we have to be one of the favorites every single night,” said Scelzi, the two-time defending NARC champion.  “Even if we start deep (in the field), we’ve shown we can win and contend every night.”

“The Peter Murphy Classic has been great for us as we’ve won the last four Peter Murphy 410 races,” Scelzi continued. “We got them both in 2021 and 2022. I just feel confident the more money on the line and the hotter the weather.  My 41 team is ready to go.”

With temperatures expected to be in the 80’s, Scelzi has all the incentives needed to continue his domination of the event.

Other previous winners of the Peter Murphy Classic include Campbell’s Bud Kaeding, Shane Golobic of Fremont, Rutherford’s Rico Abreu, and Texas driver Aaron Reutzel.

A full field of cars is expected to chase the lucrative purse which includes a guaranteed $1000 in starting money for Saturday’s A-Main.

Who to Watch

Current NARC 410 Sprint Car Series championship point leader Corey Day returns to Kings after his triumphant efforts at April 8th NARC season opener at the track. The Clovis teenager has yet to finish off the podium in 2023 and is on a streak of two consecutive second-place results.  He currently holds a 562-549 point advantage over Aromas driver Justin Sanders.  Scelzi is another two points behind.

Jonathan Allard is expected to make his 2023 debut with the NARC series. The three-time series champion, originally from Chico and now calling Waimauku, Auckland, New Zealand home, has four Kings Speedway wins since 2001, including last year’s Morrie Williams Memorial.  He has 41 NARC King of the West victories on his career resume.

Hanford’s D.J. Netto is always a threat to win on his home track.  The 2019 series champion has already enjoyed a pair of 360 victories this season and hopes to carry that hot streak to his first PMC win.  He has six NARC wins to this credit.

Even though Roseville’s Colby Copeland is not chasing NARC championship points, he is a driver to be watched at Kings Speedway.  He “quietly” finished in the runner-up spot at both events of the Peter Murphy Classic last season and always steps up his game at big shows.

McIntosh retains points lead with back-to-back runners-up, Miller best career finish in P3

PARK CITY, KS (May 6, 2023) – It’s hard to believe now that Chase McDermand’s first start of the 2023 Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota season ended with him on the trailer without a spot in the main event. His doubters have since been silenced, as he drove to Victory Lane for the second time in two races Saturday night at 81 Speedway.

His clean sweep of the Series’ first trip to Kansas was completed in exciting fashion after winning Friday night at Humboldt Speedway. McDermand and the Mounce/Stout Motorsports crew showed up to 81 on Saturday, still hungry for more, and got the job done – driving around Series points leader Cannon McIntosh on a restart in the final 10 laps to bag the $4,000 grand prize and McDermand’s third career Xtreme Outlaw victory.

His second win of the season now sets him third in the Series points standings – a far cry from 22nd, where he sat after that first race in Du Quoin back in mid-March.

“To be able to climb back out of the hole we were in early… It means a lot to be able to be able to do that this early in the season,” McDermand said.

Neither Feature win over the weekend was handed to him. Like Friday, McDermand had to pass one of the fastest cars on the track to get the win.

Rolling off the starting grid on the outside pole, McDermand slipped back to fourth in the opening laps but was able to gather it back in after a restart on Lap 11. Two laps and two passes for position later, he had only McIntosh in his sights and made a beeline for his rear bumper.

The field was soon faced with another restart on Lap 18. Though McIntosh was fast and had led the last eight laps, he still could sense the area where he was lacking.

“I could feel it start to struggle on corner exit,” McIntosh said. “I figured at some point, somebody would be coming.”

Lo and behold, the exit of Turn 2 was where McDermand decided to pull the trigger. He got a great jump on the restart and carried a full head of steam through Turns 1-2, zooming past McIntosh on the bottom to take the lead.

“I knew where I was running had been good – a little bit lower into Turn 1 and off of Turn 2,” McDermand said. “I got a really good run there. I was able to get side-by-side with him and then clear him.

“I didn’t want to get too good of a run going into Turn 3, so I had to run low enough to block the slider if it was coming.”

Now with the lead and the laps winding down, McDermand hit the jets and began to pull away from the field. Even a green-white-checkered finish at the end could not slow him down as he cruised to his second win in two nights.

“I was just trying to hit my marks,” McDermand said of his plan for the green-white-checkered finish. “Turns 1-2 I hit it right maybe three-quarters of the time, and the other corners – I just couldn’t get a good run off of 2, so I knew I had to hit that corner right, especially having Cannon and Gavin [Miller] behind me.”

Though he was a bit bummed about having to settle for runner-up two nights in-a-row, McIntosh was happy to retain the points lead with his fourth podium finish in the first five Series races thus far.

“It’s good to come out of here with the points lead and have a consistent weekend,” McIntosh said. “Hopefully, we can continue to do the same thing going into the next races we have.”

Completing the podium was 16-year-old Gavin Miller, who charged from 13th on the grid to third in 25 laps to record his best career Xtreme Outlaw finish in his first full-time season at the controls of a Keith Kunz Motorsports Midget.

“We’re making big gains every single race, and I’m still learning,” Miller said. “It’s crazy to me how far I’ve come so far, only having a year of experience, and not that many races, either.”

UNION, Ky. (May 6, 2023) – Ricky Thornton Jr. regained his early season form in winning Saturday night’s 37th Annual Ralph Latham Memorial at the Florence Speedway. In a spectacular race where the top four drivers battled it out for the lead, Thornton pulled away in the last few laps to secure his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season. Thornton was the third different leader of the highly contested race as he came from the seventh starting spot to secure the $15,000 victory. Current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point leader Hudson O’Neal came home in second with Brandon Overton completing the Big River Steel Podium. Garrett Alberson was one of the contenders for the win as he charged from his 19th starting spot to earn the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race – finishing fourth. Tim McCreadie, who started 18th rallied for fifth at the end. Jonathan Davenport, the reigning Sunoco Race Fuels North/South 100 winner started from the pole and bolted to the lead at the start of the race. Davenport pulled away from the field as O’Neal moved past Spencer Hughes for second on the third lap. O’Neal then closed the gap that had developed between himself and Davenport as the two ran two distinctly different lines.  Overton made it a three-way battle for the top spot just as the first caution of the race came out on lap ten. On the restart it took O’Neal just three laps to get by Davenport to become the second different leader of the race. Overton and Thornton both passed Davenport, dropping to fourth in the running order, with 19 laps scored as the caution would come out.  On the restart Thornton had the momentum on the top shelf passing both O’Neal and Overton as he took the lead on lap 23. Bobby Pierce was starting to show his usual Florence Speedway strength against the outside retaining wall as he climbed to third, but just as that happened an issue developed for Pierce forcing him pit side with 24 laps complete. The heated battle would slow once again with 15 laps remaining. On the restart Thornton surged away to a 2.554 second advantage when the checkers fell. It was Thornton’s second career win at Florence after he won the Spring 50 in 2021. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the eighth time in his career, Thornton emerged from the 20RT to the roar of the large crowd. “I told my guys my goal was to come out and win tonight. The car took off after that one restart. I was able to get by Hud [O’Neal] and Brandon [Overton]. I thought it was going to be around the bottom longer than it was. UNION, Ky. (May 6, 2023) – Ricky Thornton Jr. regained his early season form in winning Saturday night’s 37th Annual Ralph Latham Memorial at the Florence Speedway. In a spectacular race where the top four drivers battled it out for the lead, Thornton pulled away in the last few laps to secure his third Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win of the season. Thornton was the third different leader of the highly contested race as he came from the seventh starting spot to secure the $15,000 victory. Current Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point leader Hudson O’Neal came home in second with Brandon Overton completing the Big River Steel Podium. Garrett Alberson was one of the contenders for the win as he charged from his 19th starting spot to earn the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race – finishing fourth. Tim McCreadie, who started 18th rallied for fifth at the end. Jonathan Davenport, the reigning Sunoco Race Fuels North/South 100 winner started from the pole and bolted to the lead at the start of the race. Davenport pulled away from the field as O’Neal moved past Spencer Hughes for second on the third lap. O’Neal then closed the gap that had developed between himself and Davenport as the two ran two distinctly different lines.  Overton made it a three-way battle for the top spot just as the first caution of the race came out on lap ten. On the restart it took O’Neal just three laps to get by Davenport to become the second different leader of the race. Overton and Thornton both passed Davenport, dropping to fourth in the running order, with 19 laps scored as the caution would come out.  On the restart Thornton had the momentum on the top shelf passing both O’Neal and Overton as he took the lead on lap 23. Bobby Pierce was starting to show his usual Florence Speedway strength against the outside retaining wall as he climbed to third, but just as that happened an issue developed for Pierce forcing him pit side with 24 laps complete. The heated battle would slow once again with 15 laps remaining. On the restart Thornton surged away to a 2.554 second advantage when the checkers fell. It was Thornton’s second career win at Florence after he won the Spring 50 in 2021. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the eighth time in his career, Thornton emerged from the 20RT to the roar of the large crowd. “I told my guys my goal was to come out and win tonight. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 6, 2023) – The dream season of ascending Progressive American Flat Track star Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) continued with his convincing victory in Saturday night’s inaugural Ventura Short Track at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, California. As impressive as he was a year ago as a Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle rookie, Daniels has taken his game to the next level in 2023. The prodigious teenager extended his unblemished run of firsts and seconds this season with a calm and controlled performance en route to the top step on the box at the scenic ocean-adjacent venue. Daniels’ teammate, JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT), shot off the line in first but held the position for less than a single quick circulation of the 1/5-mile clay oval. Beach did well to keep Daniels honest after being dropped to second and even reeled him back in at one point. But the relentless perfection of the title leader gradually stacked up to a near one-second advantage by the time the Main Event was seven minutes deep, with reigning champion Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Rogers Racing/SDI Racing FTR750) significantly further back in third. Just when the podium order seemed all but academic, a red-flag reset occurred after Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750) came out the worst of an accordion-style crash that marred the multi-rider fight for fourth. Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 JMC Motorsports/Fairway Ford Indian FTR750) got into the back of Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650), leading directly to Robinson’s spill. The fallen Robinson was subsequently clipped by Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Dodge Bros. Racing/Martin Trucking Harley-Davidson XR750) forcing a stoppage in the action. But even after Beach, Mees, and the field being given a second chance, little changed at the front following the staggered restart. Daniels simply went back to piling up his advantage, ultimately scooping up a third win of the year to go with his three runner-ups. Beach completed the Estenson Racing Yamaha 1-2, while Mees managed to score podium points on a night he never really felt at home on the track. Likewise, two-time Grand National Champion Briar Bauman (No. 3 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 890 Duke) came away with fourth after running as low as ninth early. Lewis held on for his second top five of the season in fifth, followed closely to the line by Halbert and Bauman’s younger sibling, Bronson Bauman (No. 37 Fastrack Racing/2 Wheelz KTM 890 Duke). Kolby Carlile (No. 36 G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing Yamaha MT-07) picked up his best result of the season in eighth, while Davis Fisher (No. 67 Rackley Racing/Bob Lanphere’s BMC Racing Indian FTR750) and Vanderkooi rounded out the top ten. As a result of the third triumph of his sophomore campaign, Daniels tightened his grip on the title fight. He opened his lead to 24 points over Mees (138-114) a third of the way into the season, while Beach moved back ahead of Bauman for third (97-94). Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER Like Daniels, Kody Kopp (No. 1 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) earned the third win of his 2023 season as he continued his Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER title defense in stellar fashion. However, in contrast to his twin victory cruises at the DAYTONA double opener, Kopp was pushed to the brink by a hungry Chase Saathoff (No. 88 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) under the lights at Ventura Raceway. After a handful of hectic early laps, the two shook free from Saathoff’s Turner Racing teammates, Morgen Mischler (No. 13 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) and Trent Lowe (No. 48 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R). From that point on, the race became a two-rider duel for top honors. While Kopp controlled the bulk of the tense contest from the front, the Honda pilot threw in a few late haymakers, including a skittering, crisscrossing double lead change that got the fans on their feet with less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock. But a last-lap encore wasn’t in the cards, as a minor moment on Saathoff’s part with two laps to go allowed Kopp just enough air to power to the checkered flag firework-free. Kopp said, “Chase is a helluva competitor. He was my fiercest rival and competitor growing up on 85s, 250s, and 450s. Man, that was probably the most fun race I’ve ever had – we were squaring each other up. Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang are set to start 25^th in Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 at Kansas Speedway. 

Burton took that spot with a lap at 174.955 miles per hour in Saturday’s qualifying session. 

His qualifying speed was faster than his best speed in practice, where he was 11^th on the speed chart, turning a lap at 173.639 mph. He posted that on the second of 16 laps he ran in the session.

Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 is set to get the green flag just after 2 p.m. (3 p.m. Eastern Time) with TV coverage on FOX Sports 1.
 
Stage breaks in the 267-lap, 400-mile race are planned for Laps 80 and 165.
