rolex 24–corvette racing half way report

IMSA WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA CORVETTE RACING HALFWAY REPORT
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 30, 2022) – Disaster struck Corvette Racing in the seventh and eighth hours of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Saturday. Despite lengthy visits to the garage, both Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.Rs were still circulating around Daytona International Speedway at the halfway point of the opening round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.
The No. 3 Corvette ran ninth in the GT Daytona (GTD) PRO class in the program’s debut in the category. Jordan Taylor was at the wheel but 13 laps down to the class leader after the car lost time with an electrical issue that required a change of the alternator near eight-and-a-half-hour mark. Antonio Garcia was in the Corvette when the team noticed a voltage issue on the No. 3 C8.R.
Things weren’t any better for the12th-place No. 4 Corvette, which lost nearly 2.5 hours replacing the diffuser, exhaust pipes and starter. Marco Sorensen was hit from behind while trying to avoid a spinning prototype following the race’s fifth full-course caution.
Sorensen had followed double-stints by Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner. He had to brake hard to keep from hitting the wayward LMP3 car, which also just missed collecting Nicky Catsburg in the No. 3 Corvette. Sorensen was nailed from behind, which resulted in the damaged components and sent the No. 4 C8.R back to the garage.
ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “It was unfortunate. We were up there, probably not in the best place overall but we were staying out of trouble. That wasn’t the easiest thing to do with the conditions and all the mixing of the categories. We were P4 when the team realized we had an alternator issue. Everything was going smooth and all we needed to do was make it through the night. We’re back out there but down some number of laps. We’ll carry on and be as close to the lead lap if the yellows permit that. We knew it would be a crazy race.”
MARCO SORENSEN, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “We got hit from behind and that caused some big damage. There wasn’t really anywhere for me to go. There was a spinning LMP3 car ahead of us and I had to brake hard because there wasn’t anywhere I could go. Then I got the contact from behind. I don’t know who it was. The car was fine after that. I could still keep doing good laps and we were still in the game. Everything was good. Then just before I came into the pits, the car fully shut off on me. When Nick jumped in, we couldn’t start it and that started a big snowball that kept on rolling with issues. It’s tough. It was a long fix.”

Overton Claims Final Night of Super Bowl of Racing at Golden Isles

Waynesville, GA (January 29, 2022) – Brandon Overton picked up his second straight Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event on Saturday Night at Golden Isles Speedway as the Georgia-native closed out the 2022 Super Clean Super Bowl of Racing presented by eBay Motors. Overton took the lead on lap 28 from defending NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson to record his 13th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory. Tim McCreadie, reigning Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Champion, came home in fourth with Tyler Bruening recording his second top-five finish in a row. Overall fast qualifier, Kyle Larson, took the lead at the start of the 50-lap main event with Moran and Overton behind him. Moran yielded the second spot to Overton on lap 19. At the halfway mark it was still Larson showing the way with Overton hot on his heels and Moran close behind. Overton moved by Larson for the lead on the 28th lap. Moran moved past Larson on lap 33 to retake the second slot that he held earlier in the race. Moran picked up the pace even more as Overton was having to deal with heavy traffic in front of him. McCreadie made his presence known in the battle for the lead as he also got by Larson for third.  Moran quickly gained ground on Overton using the top line of the track. Moran had a run on Overton on lap 43. Just as the opening night winner pulled alongside Overton the caution came out. The caution cleared lapped traffic for Overton, but it hurt Moran and McCreadie’s chances for victory. As the final five laps of the race were winding down Overton pulled away from everybody to pick up the victory over Moran by over 3 seconds. Moran held off Larson, who charged back to third at the finish. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane Overton talked about his pass on Larson that eventually lead to his win. “I caught him (Larson) there and was just being patient. It’s been a fun weekend. I just hated that I didn’t get to run the first night we were here; it is what it is. When you are in lapped traffic, and you do the wrong move they will get you. The caution came out at the right time. I saw him (Moran) up top. I blasted through the middle on the restart, and it didn’t feel good. So, I got right back down on the bottom. I don’t know how much I beat them by, there were two good race car drivers behind me, just proud to be standing up here with them.” Moran, who had a win and two-second place finishes during the Super Bowl of Racing thought he had a shot before the last caution of the race came out. “I didn’t need that caution, but that is just how it rolls. He ultimately had the better race car and could maneuver way better than we could. To get two seconds and a win we will take it. The adjustments we made tonight just weren’t quite the right way so we will go back and think about it and do something different next time.”  Leading two of the three races this weekend at Golden Isles, Larson completed the podium with a third-place run. “I don’t think I had enough to hold him (Overton) off, he was really fast. I got into the lead, and I knew my pace was way slow. I felt like if I moved up in traffic, he was going to go right by me so I tried to hold him off the longest I could. They went by me, but after that caution I felt a lot better and to get another spot and get on the podium we will take it.” The winner’s Wells Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Allstar Concrete, Crossfit Overton, Penske Racing Shocks, R.W. Powell Construction, Convenient Lube, EZ-GO, Big Dog Stump and Tree, Clean Way Clearing, and Grading and VP Fuels. Completing the top ten were Tyler Erb, Earl Pearson Jr., Jonathan Davenport, Brandon Sheppard, and Dennis Erb Jr.

rolex 24–CADILLAC RACING 6-HOUR RACE REPORT

IMSA WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA JAN. 29, 2022
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2022) – Renger van der Zande set a race lap record of 1 minute, 34.042 seconds in the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R and Cadillac Racing entries were running 1-4 after six hours of the 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona.
The No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R paced the 61-car starting field, with the No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac Dpi-V.R running second and No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R in third. The No. 48 Ally Cadillac DPi-V.R was in fourth.
The previous race lap record was 1:34.504, set by Felipe Nasr in a Cadillac DPi-V.R in 2019.
Renger van der Zande, No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R“It’s nice to have the fastest lap ever on this track with the Rolex. That makes me smile. The car is really smooth. I’m comfortable with the car on the track. I drove from the daylight into the dark; you really have to adapt your braking marks. I’ve been doing this since 2014 and it’s one of the best events for me to go to. I love the track, I love the atmosphere. It’s very good racing out there, but it’s tricky. Try to minimize the risk and it’s still a long way to go.”
Sebastien Bourdais, No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R“Long way to go. Exciting first sequence in the car – three and a half stints. The car is looking good balance-wise. It’s pretty fast. You can put it where you want, and in traffic it’s just a big compromise. Racing with all those packs of GTs and LMP3s, it’s making life difficult and the race management is pretty difficult to assess. It’s always hard to put things in perspective; there’s a long way to go. You don’t want to relinquish too many positions, and the aggression level is difficult to gauge. You’re never really in a rhythm, but overall quite satisfied. The team is doing a good job and our car is solid. We have a great lineup and just hoping to keep the car that fast the whole time and be there at money time at the end.”
Earl Bamber, No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R“The race started off a bit more tame than we had in the (100-minute qualifying) sprint race. Everyone was finding their feet, finding their way with the traffic and seeing how long each person can go on fuel. It’s just a big train at the moment and who gets a bit of luck with traffic. A few dicey moments already, and I think it’s going to get more difficult through the night. It’s going to be a tough, long night and who’s there in the morning with a clean car still will be OK. You have to be so alert with 60 cars. I think we all know the race is not won today, so it’s just a matter of cruising around and staying out of trouble. Chip (Ganassi) gave us instructions not to damage anything and be nice and clean for tomorrow. The category is awesome and you don’t want to get out of the car, you want to do stint after stint.”
Alex Lynn, No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R“I think we have a really good car, so from our side it’s just about keeping it clean and in one piece for tomorrow morning. I think we have a lot of speed in both the 02 and 01. (About first stint in a Cadillac DPi) It’s not too bad to be honest. I think at this period of the race isn’t the time to be pushing the limit on the out lap. That will come later when you try to extract everything. The back end generates a lot of tire warmth and tire energy, so once you hit Turn 6 and go onto the banking the tires are pretty much there. (About first stint with Chip Ganassi Racing) I enjoyed it immensely. It’s nice when you feel like you’re driving a fast car. That makes everything a lot calmer and you just focus on doing your job. We’re just cycling through the drivers now so everyone gets a bit of time in the daylight. We’ll crack on this evening and see in the morning where we are. (About hoping to meet Dale Earnhardt Jr.) He’s a legend so I’m a fan. I grew a racing fan. I haven’t experienced much American racing as a whole, so I’m just soaking it all in this year and enjoying it immensely.”
Marcus Ericsson, No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R“I thought the first stint was pretty good; the Cadillac is fast. I think we had good balance. It did get a bit tricky when the sun set and the temperature went down and you lose some tire. For me, it was a lot of fun. I’ve never done any endurance racing. I definitely had some fun moments out there, some close moments as well. It felt like I got more and more into it the more I was in the car. Looking forward to the next time I’m in the car.”
Pipo Derani, No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R“We started (seventh) because of a strategy call in the qualifying race at the Roar, so we were trying cautiously to move our way up. We were able to do that. The car wasn’t ready the first stint due to tire temperature, but we were able to fix that for second, third and fourth stint that I was in the car and the car just came alive. I was able to put in some good laps and move some spots and give the car up to Tristan (Nunez) in third position. At the same time that we’re being cautious, we also don’t want to lose the position because that messes up the strategy. It’s so hard to gain positions, but sometimes so easy to lose them if you get the traffic on the wrong place. We always have the mentality that there’s still a lot of race to go and we want to get to the end (without incident) and be in position to win.”
Ben Keating, No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R“That might be the most fun I’ve ever had in a race car. It just did two hours behind the wheel. I didn’t want to take any risks, so my first four or five laps I was off the pace a bit just getting used to everything. I double stinted the tires the second stint, but then after the yellow flag I got a brand new set of tires and being up there with all the Cadillac DPis, with all that Cadillac power behind me, that was a complete clast. I was able to keep up with all of those guys. I’m proud of my lap times. I did a 1-minute, 35-second lap at the end, which is by far and away the fastest lap I’ve ever done here at Daytona. It was just a ton of fun and I can’t wait to get back in the Cadillac.”
Kamui Kobayashi, No. 48 Ally Cadillac DPi-V.R“It’s pretty difficult (with traffic) than the last two or three years. We just have to survive at this stage and I think tomorrow will be a little less trouble for everyone. We’ll try to survive overnight and see how it goes.”
Cadillac running order at 6 hours:1. No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R, Renger van der Zande, Sebastien Bourdais, Scott Dixon, Alex Palou2. No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R, Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn, Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson3. No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R, Pipo Derani, Tristan Nunez, Mike Conway4. No. 48 Ally Cadillac DPi-V.R, Jimmie Johnson, Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Rockenfeller, Jose Maria Lopez6. No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R, Tristan Vautier, Richard Westbrook, Loic Duval, Ben Keating

corvette racing–rolex 24–six-hour report

IMSA WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA CORVETTE RACING SIX-HOUR REPORT
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 29, 2022) – Corvette Racing found itself in the thick of the GT Daytona (GTD) PRO battle following the first six hours of the Rolex 24 At Daytona with its pair of mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.Rs. It’s the first race in the GTD category for the Corvette Racing program, which ran sixth and seventh at quarter-distance.
Nicky Catsburg was in his second stint in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R following double-stints for both Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor to start. Catsburg was the highest-placed Corvette, one position ahead of Marco Sorensen in the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM C8.R. He followed stints by Nick Tandy and Tommy Milner, which had a slightly better pace than the sister car in the early going.
The first six hours featured four full-course cautions and abnormally cold conditions for Daytona Beach. The Corvettes also were dealing with an overall performance deficit but were staying close to the lead pack with fuel economy and pitlane strategy in an attempt to gain track position.
Corvette Racing’s next update will come at the halfway point of the Rolex 24.
ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “It was a little chaotic but not much. We know how the race is going to be. The first restart with the LMP3s around us was a little bit different. We need to know and learn how they are on these restarts. This is still the very early stage of the race but there are people who are being aggressive and some others not so much. So we need to stay with it. It looks like we can hold our position and keep track of the leaders more or less, which is important. We will carry on and see how the track and race develop. We can definitely follow people but I don’t know about catching them or leading the way. I don’t know if it will be easy or not. That’s the way it is right now.”
JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “It is definitely chaos out there right now. A lot of guys want to be at the front and that’s fine with me. They can race as hard as they want but for us we just need to stay out of trouble. We don’t have outright pace to battle with them. We’re good on strategy right now and saving fuel every stint to try and maximize that. But yeah, it’s chaotic. Mixing it up with LMP3 cars and slow LMP2 cars has caused some mayhem. Throughout the night, the name of the game is staying out of trouble. Hopefully come Sunday we have a strong Corvette and a car in one piece.”WILL IT GET MORE TREACHEROUS OVERNIGHT WITH THE TEMPS DROPPING? “If we have yellows then it will breed more yellows because the cold tires are so hard to get temp in. It wasn’t as bad as I expected but I think it will get worse during the night. The good thing is that once the tires to get temperatures in them, the grip is actually higher than what we’ve all weekend, which is nice. So you can push the car a little bit harder. That’s a positive but keeping out of trouble during restarts will be a huge part of it.”
NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “So far so good. The first couple of stints were quite good. There obviously was a yellow early when everyone needed to stop in GTD. So it was good to experience the whole field coming in together. On our side it’s running pretty well. We’re finding that when we are in a pack, we aren’t too bad because we can draft off the cars in front. We seem pretty strong in the infield. It just becomes a bit different when we drop off the back of the pack; it looks like some of the leaders seem to stretch out their legs a little bit.”HOW MUCH ARE YOU LEARNING ABOUT THE GTD CORVETTE? “We were learning every session. We know the car. We know a lot about everything to do with how it operates. We know the tires. We’ve tested on the tires. We’ve tested the ABS and things like this. What we’re learning here is how everything translates and works together at Daytona with Daytona-specific aero requirements, suspension, geometry settings and tire pressures. This was something we’ve been learning throughout the week. The key thing is getting the car to work with the tire. That can vary from track to track how you make the most of it. It’s very different than before where we could select the tire we wanted and effectively develop the tire around our Corvette in GTLM. Now we have to work the car around the tire we’re given, which everyone does in GTD. This is one of the key differences.”WITH MORE CARS IN THE CLASS, IS IT DIFFERENT? “Yep! So far, I haven’t experienced too much of it to be honest. We had kind of a clean start and we were more to the front of the pack. But I’ve just seen on a restart there was a mix of cars – some had pitted and some had stayed out. When there are 35 cars by design that are capable of doing the same lap time in a space like Daytona, plus the other 30 cars out there, that’s something very new for us. It was kind of the like the GRAND-AM days when there were two separate classes. This is probably somewhat similar. In the last few years, we’ve had four or five classes and all the cars had a different spread. Now there’s a much bigger group that are all similar speed. That was really the first time we’ve seen the grid mixed up on a restart. Hopefully it’s not going to carry on like that.”
TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “It was chaotic but honestly a lot of fun. It’s been a long time since we’ve had to race that hard from start to finish of my stint. We’re still kind of where we expected, a little slow to be sure. We’ll try to use whatever tools we possibly can. It looks like we can go a little longer on fuel but I’m not sure we can make up that deficit that we have on pace but we’ll try for sure. I was really happy with the Corvette. The first stint wasn’t great but we made a change for the second stint and it was much better. With the change and maybe the track conditions, it looks like our pace improved. I’m very happy with it and it’s been great so far. We’ll let these smart Corvette Racing engineers try to figure out how to keep us moving toward the front.”JORDAN SAID THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TIRES WERE BETTER THAN HE EXPECTED WHEN THEY GOT UP TO TEMP. DID YOU FIND THAT TRUE AS WELL? “Yes. From talking to other drivers in GTD in the past, this customer tire suffers a little bit more in heat, so in these conditions it’s kind of ideal for it. For sure it’s tough to get heat in the tire but we’re doing our best there. But once we do, there is a lot of grip just like Jordan said.”

Cadillac Racing drivers rave about 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V

Renger van der Zande, Earl Bamber enjoy the drive at Daytona International Speedway
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2022) – TV viewers got a peek of the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V during coverage of the 60th Rolex 24 At Daytona.
They likely noticed the enthusiastic impressions of the Escalade-V during its introduction to the V-Series family at Daytona International Speedway from Cadillac Racing Daytona Prototype international (DPi) drivers Renger van der Zande and Earl Bamber.
“The Escalade is awesome; what a vehicle to come to the track in,” said Bamber, co-driver of the No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R. “As soon as you get on the throttle, the noise that it makes is insane. We both had a smile on our face the whole time and we had a heap of fun driving around Daytona International Speedway.”
Cadillac recently announced it is expanding its V-Series lineup to include the Escalade-V, which will be the first SUV to don the high-performance V-Series badge. With nearly two decades of racing-inspired prowess, the Cadillac V-Series is an elevation of Cadillac design, performance and technology, and the purest expression of the passion that exists at the core of the Cadillac brand. More information about the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V, including full vehicle specs, will be revealed in spring 2022.
Both drivers had the opportunity to briefly drive the Cadillac CT5-V and CT4-V Blackwings, too, at the racetrack.
“The power of these cars is phenomenal,” Bamber said.
The V-Series Blackwings were developed to be track-capable straight from the factory. Featuring a hand-built 6.2-liter supercharged V8 delivering 668 horsepower paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, the CT5-V Blackwing is refinement rooted in racing performance.
“I’ve been driving (the CT5-V) around the Nurburgring, I’ve been driving it around some other tracks, and now in Daytona and it’s pretty impressive,” said van der Zande, who co-drives the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R. “And the nice thing is you can still cruise around in it if you want to, but once you need the go, go, go time, it’s alive.
“It’s an awesome car to go on the track with. I’ll order one if they don’t give me one.”
Added Bamber: “I’d like to have one but I’m afraid I’d get myself in big trouble with how fast they are. It’s a bunch of fun.”

HIGH GEAR: Geary Bags First Career East Bay Winternationals

Win in Round ThreeVictor Lee, Lucas Lee, Wilson, Troutman, Bernhardt and Adams locked into Saturday redraw TAMPA, FL – Jan. 28, 2022 – He arrived at the track Friday afternoon, just in time to get through tech inspection and the drivers meeting. By the time the night was out, Seth Geary was standing in East Bay Raceway Park Victory Lane as a first-time DIRTcar UMP Modified Winternationals Feature winner. “This is awesome,” Geary said with a big smile. “I’m really speechless. First Winternationals win at East Bay, it’s awesome.” It’s the second win of the week for the home-state drivers. Geary, of Bradenton, FL, gets it done just two days after fellow Floridian Bryan Bernhardt parked it in Victory Lane in the event opener Wednesday night. Geary was unable to join the field for the first two nights of competition due to day job commitments, but he made the most of the limited time he spent on-track – winning his Heat Race, starting sixth in the Feature and taking just 14 laps to pass some of the stiffest competition he sees all year. “This is at the top of the list, for sure, beating some of the best Modified drivers in the country,” Geary said. Polesitter Tyler Nicely, of Owensboro, KY, led the field around the third-mile for the first 10 circuits, dodging several pass attempts on several restarts over that period. Then came the hard-charging Brian Shaw, who made two successful pass attempts for the lead and finally wrestled it away on Lap 11. But, it didn’t last. Sitting third on a Lap 13 restart, Geary got a great run into Turn 1 and threaded the needle between Nicely and Shaw. He dashed right by both down the backstretch and took the lead into Turn 3. “I knew I was good from behind,” Geary said. “I saw that they were racing – Nicely went straight to the bottom and Shaw went straight to the top, so I thought if I could arch entry and roll off the middle, it oughta be pretty good, and it worked.” Now holding the lead with half of the race in the can, Geary went into full-defense mode. Numerous caution flags were displayed over the final 15 laps, forcing Geary to be diligent on the restarts. Which, he was, never once being seriously challenged for the lead. Meanwhile, a charge from the rear was going on behind him. Thursday night Feature winner Victor Lee had a hot rod and was making moves through the field, climbing all the way up to third from 17th in 21 laps, using a bit of strategy and a pinch of good fortune. “You let these guys make the mistakes a lot of the time,” Lee, of Danville, KY, said. “This track is so treacherous. You move up out of the groove there, or miss the groove, or enter just a little wrong, you really don’t know which way you’re going.” Geary never missed a beat in the final laps as he led the field back to the checkers to collect a $1,500 check. He’s raced East Bay in the past, so he knows what he’s doing when it comes to the dark dirt of East Bay. “We raced here at the end of the month last year and we were pretty good,” Geary said. “We just brought out what we had from then, and it just stuck.” Nicely came home second – a big turnaround from two bitter endings to his Wed-Thu night efforts. He kept the car up front, pointed in the right direction and bagged a solid points finish that will set him up for a nice Heat Race starting spot on Saturday. “Just finishing tonight is a real big confidence booster,” Nicely said. “I know we’ve got a good car, and I’ve got a good crew behind me. We’ve set quick time every night in our group and won our Heat Races, just haven’t been able to put a whole night together. Tonight was one step in the right direction.” Lee crossed the stripe in third, locking him into the top-six redraw for the 75-lap, $5,000-to-win championship Feature on Saturday. “Tore up a little sheet metal, but all-in-all, we’re locked-in for tomorrow, so we’ll get up early and beat-and-bang and get it ready,” Lee said. After posting consecutive top-10 finishes in the first two races, Buzzy Adams, of Cameron, WI, had a rough go of things in Friday’s Feature. A third-place in his Heat set him 14th on the Feature starting grid, where he eventually got caught-up in a spin in front of him, piling-in and damaging the car’s nose. His crew made repairs, but not before losing a lap to the field, leaving him with a 13th-place finish. Winternationals points leader Lucas Lee, of Paris, TN, bagged another solid finish in fifth, keeping him locked-into the Saturday finale. Allen Weisser, of Peoria, IL, made repairs to the Lightning Chassis #1 after a rough but impressive drive to the podium on Thursday, driving to a sixth-place run after spinning early on Friday. The preliminary shows have all been completed, and now the top six drivers in event points will be locked into the big show on Saturday night. Lucas Lee, Victor Lee, Chris Wilson, Drake Troutman, Bryan Bernhardt and Buzzy Adams have earned those honors and will redraw for their Feature starting spots on Saturday night. The 23rd annual UMP Modified Winternationals finale hits the dirt at East Bay Raceway Park on Saturday, Jan. 29. A NAME AND LOGO CHANGE IN STORE FOR NARC-KING OF THE WEST SPRINT CAR SERIES IN ’22

(1/29/22) Sacramento, CA … The Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC) announced today that the King of the West 410 sprint car series will undergo a name and logo change for the 2022 season and beyond.

The logo’s retro design harkens back to the golden days of NARC as the series approaches its largest schedule in many years with momentum and hopes of a new heyday on the horizon.

As part of the series five-year business plan to restore 410 sprint car racing to its original form in California, King of the West-NARC Racing Series owners Brent Kaeding and Jim Allen announced that the series will now give NARC top billing.   The NARC Fujitsu General Sprint Car Series will still crown a King of the West champion, but emphasis is being put on the “club” aspect.

“We have 62-years of racing history with the Northern Auto Racing Club,” said Kaeding, a 13-time NARC and 13-time King of the West champion.  “Our racing organization was always stronger when we had more people involved in a club atmosphere.  For 410 sprint car racing to move forward in California and the west coast, we need this effort to continue and grow.”

The Golden State Championship Series, which had its inaugural season in 1986, crowned a “King of California” sprint car series champion and was sanctioned by the Northern Auto Racing Club from day one.  When the series changed ownership over the years, it morphed into a collection of names ranging from the Golden State Challenge to eventually the King of the West series.

Series information can be found at NARC410.com.  The season opener will be held on April 2nd at the Stockton Dirt Track.

And now on perhaps the most fitting date, 63 days from beginning our 63rd season, we present the new Northern Auto Racing Club logo.

Heartbreak for Honda Civic Type R TCRs at Daytona

No. 89 HART Honda Civic Type R TCR leads on IMSA return, before apparent driveline failure leads to retirement
Mike LaMarra, Ryan Eversley take LA Honda World Civic to the front, before being sidelined by fuel issue
VGRT has early puncture, power steering problem in the four-hour race

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (January 28, 2022) Both the LA Honda World and HART efforts led laps in their Honda Civic Type R TCR machines today at Daytona International Speedway, before unfortunate issues knocked them out of the season-opening, four-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge endurance race.

Cameron Lawrence started the race in the #89 Honda Civic Type R TCR for HART, and worked his way through the field, to lead 10 laps before a failure in the right front of the car took them behind the wall. Teammate Chad Gilsinger would get back on track briefly, but the team would eventually park the car before third HART driver Steve Eich had a chance behind the wheel.

The #73 Honda Civic Type R TCR from LA Honda World suffered similar heartbreak, with Mike LaMarra advancing through the field from the team’s 15th place starting position to put co-driver Ryan Eversley in podium contention following their mid-race driver change. Eversley would go on to suffer a fuel issue while leading, and eventually retire from the race.

The #99 newly-renamed VGRT team of Victor Gonzalez and Ruben Iglesias, despite being fast through last week’s Roar test and in the practice sessions leading up to this race, suffered from a tire problem in the opening stint of the race, and would eventually retire with a power steering problem.

Quotes
Ryan Eversley (#73 LA Honda World Honda Civic Type R TCR): “It was so frustrating! The car was really good on the infield and on the brakes, the great Honda handling made this car really fun to drive. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a ton of speed on the straights—even in the draft. So we were just holding on and hoping other people had problems, but we were the ones that ended up with problems. Huge thanks to LA Honda World, to HPD, to Mike [LaMarra]. This crew, they’re 99% new to IMSA this weekend, and we didn’t have a single pit stop issue. No [pit lane] penalties in the race or in practices, and for a bunch of guys that are new from the dealership side, that was really impressive.”

Mike LaMarra (#73 LA Honda World Honda Civic Type R TCR): “It was fantastic to be back in the Honda Civic Type R TCR. I really love driving this car! We hit it well on the [chassos] setup. There were a lot of wet practice [sessions] this weekend, and we weren’t great in the wet. But, we threw the kitchen sink at it and the race was mostly dry, so it really worked out well for us! It felt really strong in that first stint. We definitely had a shot at this thing, so it’s disappointing to end the day behind the wall.”

HPD has three ready-to-race Civic models for touring car competition. Overton Back to Victory Lane at Golden Isles

Waynesville, GA (January 28, 2022) – Brandon Overton returned to victory lane on Friday Night at Golden Isles Speedway in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The 30-year-old Georgia native won for the second time in his career in the Super Clean Super Bowl of Racing presented by eBay Motors. One night after failing to crack the starting line-up in the season opener, Overton chased down race leader and opening night winner, Devin Moran to pass him on lap 27. Overton held off Moran and a hard-charging Hudson O’Neal at the finish. The top three finishers were separated by only .7 tenths of a second at the line. With several passes in the last few laps of the 50-lap event, Earl Pearson Jr. and Tyler Bruening rounded out the top five drivers. Pole starter Moran continued his strong start at Golden Isles this weekend taking the lead at the start of the race. Moran held a steady and healthy lead for the first 12 laps of the race until the first of two cautions slowed the action. On the restart Moran kept his lead as Pearson and Overton battled for second. Overton gained the second spot from Pearson on lap 22, quickly catching Moran in traffic and overhauling him for the race lead on lap 27. Moran tracked down Overton closing the gap with a few laps remaining as O’Neal was peddling hard on the outside.  O’Neal had a run on Moran coming off of turn four as the duo headed to the checkers but Moran was able to hold him off at the finish line. Overton’s 12th career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win was by just .622 seconds. Overton failed the series droop-rule after qualifying on Thursday night but came back strong to score the victory 24-hours later. “I told my car owner last night I am sorry I probably cost us that one. I told him I will make it up tomorrow. Our car’s been really good especially last year. That was a heck of race, I just wished we could have gotten to race last night. I know it’s cold and they are trying the best they can. Kyle (Bronson) has done a job with this place. Devin (Moran) is one of my buddies, he’s a heck of a race car driver.” Sporting the Midwest Sheet Metal orange spoiler indicating him as the current points leader, Moran led the first 26 laps of the race before coming home in second. “I just could not maneuver through lapped traffic. It was hard to maneuver tonight. Brandon (Overton) does what he always does. I am glad he wasn’t in the race last night. Our tires were pretty much bald at the end.” O’Neal charged back from the back end of the top-10 to take the final podium spot, shaking things up in the last few laps of the race. “We were just a lap or two too late. We had a great car. We just got behind there a little bit early and didn’t fire as good as we needed too. We kind of slowly had to work our way back up, the lapped cars didn’t help any. We proved we a had a good race car and we made improvements from the first night.” The winner’s Wells Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Allstar Concrete, Crossfit Overton, Penske Racing Shocks, EZ-GO, Convenience Lube, R.W. Powell Construction, Big Dog Stump and Tree, Clean Way Clearing and Grading, and VP Fuels. Completing the top ten were Dennis Erb Jr., Chris Madden, Jonathan Davenport, Brandon Sheppard, and Tim McCreadie.

IMSA WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA CADILLAC RACING MEDIA AVAILABILITY JAN. 28, 2022
Chip Ganassi Racing principal Chip Ganassi and drivers of the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R (Renger van der Zande, Sebastien Bourdais, Scott Dixon and Alex Palou) and No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R (Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn, Kevin Magnussen and Marcus Ericsson) met with members of the media at Daytona International Speedway. Select quotes:
CHIP GANASSI, CHIP GANASSI RACING OWNER AND CEOWHERE DO YOU THINK IMSA IS AT RIGHT NOW? IS THERE OPTIMISM?“It would not be hard to argue that we are on the precipice of a renaissance period here with the rules coming together, the international level, and manufacturer interest. You don’t even have to read the tea leaves, just reading the press announcements that its going to be something good.”HOW HAS IT BEEN FOR YOU GUYS GETTING THE SECOND CAR TOGETHER THIS YEAR AND AS AN ORGANIZATION IN EXPANDING HERE?“We are used to running more than one car. Last year we were kind of getting up and going. A year ago, right now, I think our team was about seven days old. It was a little bit of a hurry up thing last year to get going, so we are a little more at ease running two cars I think.”
MIKE HULL, MANAGING DIRECTORIN TERMS OF THE (WEATHER) CONDITIONS YOUR TEAMS WILL FACE DURING THE RACE?“Here’s the thing about road racing, especially a 24-hour race. No matter what the conditions become as you race, you chase the racetrack more with a long-distance race than a sprint race. So, what you rely on is the race drivers we have to keep you in the loop on what’s going on on the racetrack, and these days we’re afforded with a lot of telemetry, items that help us read the racetrack. It’s all dependent upon ambient temperature, track temperature and the conditions themselves. That’s what is really neat about racing at Daytona for 24 hours, Sebring for 12 hours, if you’re lucky enough to be invited to race at Le Mans, it takes a lot of mentally strength to do it right. That’s what road racing should really be about.”IN TERMS OF THE ENTRY NAME, IT’S CADILLAC RACING. WHAT SHOULD WE READ INTO THAT?“Absolutely nothing. That’s what racing is all about. They pay us to race cars. Think about that for a minute. We just race cars on race day, not matter what the length of time. What that represents is a terrific partnership that we have with Cadillac. Last year, the skies opened up for Chip Ganassi Racing and gave us the opportunity to race with Cadillac. Today, we’re in a position to race two Cadillacs. We’re excited about that and we’ll keep working to be better at it as we go along.”
RENGER VAN DER ZANDE, NO. 01 V-PERFORMANCE ACADEMY CADILLAC DPI-V.RP1 IN TODAY’S PRACTICE IN SEMI-DRY CONDITIONS. DOES THAT ADD ANYTHING TO THE DATA ACQUISITION?“Big time. We didn’t have any dry running yet and we need to set up the car a bit, especially on the back of the car. We tried some items that I think worked out well. Even on the aero devices during that session we could tune it up a bit.”WEATHER IS AN ISSUE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE OVERNIGHT DRIVERS. AND WHAT ABOUT A TAILWIND?“We’ve had it cold here, but never as cold as being forecast. I don’t know what it does to the engines, but I know the outlap will be tricky with new tires. It is a race about survival and not making mistakes.”
SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, NO. 01 V-PERFORMANCE ACADEMY CADILLAC DPI-V.RYOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS TEAM, SO THAT MUST BE HELPFUL?“For the most part, most of the guys I work with in the Ford program as well so I’m kind of in a known environment, which is always great, especially when it’s quality people like here at Chip Ganassi Racing. I’m quite excited to get things going. I think we had a lot of pace at the qualifying race, we just got that pit speeding penalty, which I’m not entirely sure what happened there. We definitely took the pit speed limit down a notch and made sure it’s not going to happen again. The car felt really good this morning, so hopefully we will have a great race. It’s going to be another long one, of survival, with a lot of traffic, and really cold temperatures so night is going to be even more of a survival game than ever. We just have to be smart about it.”HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DEAL WITH THE COLD DURING YOUR STINTS?“We’ve run in the cold, so it’s not exactly unknown territory. I think the biggest thing will be the outlap at night when it gets that cold. We’ll just have to take it a little easier and ultimately once you get past that really terrifying experience on the outlap, then it’s mostly OK. For sure, restarts can be quite tricky, too. It’s the same for everybody. It’s tough to predict how it’s going to be. By the time it gets critical, temperatures will be back in the upper 40s, so I’m not too worried about it.”
SCOTT DIXON, NO. 01 V-PERFORMANCE ACADEMY CADILLAC DPI-V.RTALK ABOUT TRAFFIC.“You don’t know when there is a train of that many who is talking and who is not, we rely on the spotters a lot. The LMP2s are similar in speed, they have slowed us down on straights and they race us hard. Having a multi-car team has been great because you can talk to each other and see what is working for the other car and help to make your car better. I love this race, it’s a lot of fun and it’s become a lot more fun with the INDYCAR offseason being so long. My passion is driving race cars, that is what I love to do and it seems like his race is fun on so many different levels whether its catching up with people you only see once a year or people in different series you have raced with throughout your life. I’m looking forward to getting out there for three hours and driving. We have had some tests here that the weather was about 35 or so. Once you get the first two laps out of the way, it’s pretty normal so I am not too worried about the cold. The track temperature itself won’t be super low since cars will be constantly running.”
ALEX PALOU, NO. 01 V-PERFORMANCE ACADEMY CADILLAC DPI-V.RHOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE BEEN FOR YOU SO FAR?“This is my very first 24 hours race, I am drinking through a firehose. I am feeling good and super excited to get the year started. I don’t like breaks. I would race every weekend if I could. It’s good to be here in Daytona and in my first prototype race at the end of the day it’s so close to a single-seater. I am really happy to be sharing the car with three other teammates and a 24-hour race. I can’t imagine the crazy things that would happen in 24 hours.”WHAT IS THE RACING LIKE?“The traffic is something I don’t think I will ever get used to. Seeing 60 other cars on the track is crazy. And seeing the speed differences between the LMP2, DPi, etc., It’s quite insane. It makes you have to work all the time when you are on the track. In INDYCAR, sometimes the race or session settles in and you can relax for a couple of laps or so, and here you can’t. You get to a car that is 20 seconds slower and you have to decide if you are going to pass him on the inside or outside. The stints go by quite quick because every corner is different. I am looking forward to being the 3 a.m. guy. I think I am going to wake up at 1 a.m. and want to be in the DPi car. I hope to do some night sessions, I am looking forward to waking up at a crazy hour to drive.”
EARL BAMBER, NO. 02 CADILLAC ACCESSORIES CADILLAC DPI-V.RHOW HAS THE PRACTICE SESSIONS WORKED OUT FOR YOU IN THE 02 CAR?“Challenging conditions. There has been a little bit of dry running and wet in the night. The car is really well-prepared and in really good condition. (Thursday) was my first wet laps in the Cadillac DPi and I really enjoyed that. We were quick. I think we’ll have a really fast car. We’re ready but the big one always comes up quicker than you expect. We’ve been working really hard since the December test to make sure everything is in line and I think we learned a lot from the qualifying race. We’re going to be learning the whole way, but I think by the time we get to the last four hours we’re going to be there for the win.”
ALEX LYNN, NO. 02 CADILLAC ACCESSORIES CADILLAC DPI-V.RWITH WET CONDITIONS AND COLD THAT MAYBE ALTERED YOUR TEST PLANS, HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THIS RACE?“It’s difficult having the first round of the championship being a 24-race. It’s so unique. In other championships, you build up to a 24-hour race. Not much time for the teams to prepare, but for us mentally it’s difficult because it’s going straight from a break to a 24-hour race. The key word is endurance, just getting through the night and seeing where you are. There are a lot of points at stake, and you want to build up a momentum for the championship, but it’s obviously a race that everyone wants to win.”
KEVIN MAGNUSSEN, NO. 02 CADILLAC ACCESSORIES CADILLAC DPI-V.RTELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR ROLEX EXPERIENCE SO FAR AND WHAT YOU ARE EXPECTING FOR THE RACE.“It’s always good to be at Daytona and as you said, it’s my second year. We had a really good time last year and almost had a good result as well. Had the puncture right at the end with seven minutes to go fighting for the lead. So, that was a big bummer of course and makes it even better to be here again this year with Cadillac and with Chip Ganassi to try and make up for the disappointment last year.”SO AS TEAMS LIKE ACURA AND CADILLAC ARE EXTREMELY CLOSE, WHERE IS THE ADVANTAGE IN DRIVING THE CADILLAC AND WHERE DO YOU FIND YOURSELF MAKING UP TIME ON THE ACURAS?“The Acuras are pretty good all-around and doesn’t have any real weak point, and I would say between all the DPi cars its pretty level. Its balanced out pretty well. So, yes, the Cadillac is a nice car to drive, it’s very smooth and very drivable so far, so can’t complain.”TEMPERATURES ARE ALMOST GOING TO BE RECORD LOWS. HOW DO YOU SEE THAT CHANGING THE DYNAMIC OF THIS RACE?“The biggest worry is that the brakes cool down so much, and of course the tires. I think we are going to be OK on tires, it’s just going to be very tricky on the outlap to get the heat into the tires. After that, I think it’s going to be fine. I think this race has had freezing temperatures before and it hasn’t been such a problem. You know, it’s the same for everyone so it’s up to whoever deals with it better.”
MARCUS ERICSSON, NO. 2 CADILLAC ACCESSORIES CADILLAC DPI-V.RAFTER THE ON-TRACK TIME YOU’VE HAD, HOW COMFORTABLE IN THE CADILLAC ARE YOU ENTERING YOUR FIRST DPI RACE?“When I’ve been in the car, I’ve been really comfortable. The car drives really well and it’s well-balanced. I’ve gotten used to the car very quickly. So far, it’s been really good. I’m looking forward to see how the race plays out. It’s a new experience for me; I’ve never done an endurance race or a 24-hour race.”FOR YOUR FIRST TIME, HOW DO YOU MENTALLY PREPARE FOR AN ENDURANCE RACE?“I’ve been speaking to my experienced teammates that I can lean on, but at the end of the day you have to experience it for yourself. One of the keys will be between stints to switch off a little bit and try to get some rest. That will be important to be fully ready when you’re in the car, and that’s not something I’ve done before. The Rookie of the Year Contender comes into the 2022 Season with National Tour ExperienceBarberville, FL – January 28, 2022 – Tanner English finds himself in a unique position for the 2022 season. He’s one of six newcomers contending for the World of Outlaws Late Model Rookie of the Year title this year, however, of that group, he’s the only driver with full-time experience on a national tour. That knowledge gives English insight into the battles he’ll face in 2022 and how to tackle them during the grueling 10-month schedule.    “Just knowing what to expect, knowing there’s going to be lows, and you just got to roll with it,” English said. “You’re not always going to run good, especially at places you’ve never been before.” Going into his first full tour with the World of Outlaws, the Benton, KY driver stated he’s in a better position now than when he ran the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series in 2020. Especially after teaming with Riggs Motorsports. “I feel like we have more equipment and help than we’ve ever had here at Riggs motorsports,” English said. “The year I ran with the [Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series], I wasn’t prepared at all. I feel like we got a year of that under our belt, and we ran the [DIRTcar] Summer Nationals last year, and most people can’t make it a week on that. We ran that whole deal and ran up front the whole time, didn’t tear much up, so that’s what it’s all about, being consistent and finishing races.  “It’s not always about winning. You want to win every race, but it’s not realistic, so you just take what you can get sometimes.” English finished 18th in the World of Outlaws season opener at Volusia Speedway Park. The Series has five more Features at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile” during DIRTcar Nationals in February, and he knows those events can help shape the rest of the year. “That’s what makes or breaks you right there is the first of the year,” English said. “Just like when I did that Lucas deal, I didn’t make a few races at the beginning, and you take those races out, then I finish three spots better in points. “It’s huge just making the races and finishing them down [at Volusia] because it’s a grind for sure. It’s a big track, and it’s hard on stuff and just finishing is what it’s all about and being there at the end.” While racing at DIRTcar Nationals can be grueling, he’s also looking ahead to the new tracks on the schedule and traveling to the Northeast. English stated he’s excited to test his skills against some of the best Late Model drivers in the country at new venues in 2022.  “I’m really looking forward to going to the Rev down there in Louisiana,” English said. “That seems like something that I would like. I’ve raced in Louisiana down there before around Vivian, and it’s not far from West Monroe, so maybe it has the same dirt, and it races good. “I’m looking forward to that and a lot of tracks out East; you just race so many places. That’s what I like doing is going to different places and seeing how we stack up.” English hopes the unique position he’s in, along with his national tour experience, pushes him forward as a contender for Rookie of the Year. The World of Outlaws Late Models continue their 2022 season at Volusia Speedway Park, Feb. 16-19, at DIRTcar Nationals. LEADFOOT RETURNS: Lee Wins East Bay Winternationals Round Two After Long Absence

Weisser drives 21st-to-third in battered, blank car TAMPA, FL – Jan. 27, 2022 – Twenty-one years ago, Victor Lee left East Bay Raceway Park for the final time after piloting a DIRTcar UMP Modified, not knowing when he’d next compete in the division at the historic Winternationals event. Thursday night brought the return of The Lincoln Leadfoot to Victory Lane for his first career Feature win in the event. He’s visited the Clay by the Bay several times since his last event start in 2001, either driving or working for a Late Model team, but had never made a trip to Victory Lane with a Modified. A Winternationals trophy was something he’d been searching for his entire career, and now he’s finally got one. “It’s definitely been on my bucket list,” Lee said of the significance of his win. “When you come down here, you’re racing guys from all over the country.” The names, the faces, the times and the tech may have changed in Lee’s East Bay absence, but Lee’s desire to win at this event never faded. He’s come a long way since his rookie season in 2000, and finally cashed-in on sticking it out through all the defeats. “Twenty-one years ago, I was doing well,” Lee said lightheartedly. “I don’t know if I made but maybe one show. I think I won a Strawberry Dash or something… but we’ve definitely struggled here.” To do it, Lee had to drive a patient race. Lots of beating, banging and bumping was happening all around him through all 30 laps, and it started right in the first stanza. A multi-car pileup erupted on a Lap 5 restart after outside polesitter Steve Stevenson appeared to not have fired by the orange cone in Turn 4, stacking up several cars behind him including Lucas Lee, Drake Troutman, Bryan Bernhardt and more. Victor Lee escaped with minor body damage, and Lucas Lee was given his spot back in the running order before the restart. “I got hit from behind, and [Stevenson] went, and I was trying not to hit him,” Lucas said. “When my wheel got on his, it was pretty much over.” Through the next 21 laps, it was all Lucas Lee out front. Multiple times, Tyler Nicely, Drake Troutman, and eventually Victor Lee, put the pressure on him from behind, but to no avail. Lucas was great on the bottom, until trouble bit him. Getting into Turn 3 with four laps remaining, Lucas appeared to push excessively up the track and out of the preferred bottom lane, opening the door wide open for Victor to zoom on by. “I think in that wreck on the restart, when I got hit in the rear pushing Steve [Stevenson], something bent on the right-front,” Lucas said. “I was kinda tight after that point, pretty bad. “I knew I couldn’t [miss the bottom] two laps in-a-row,” Lucas said. “I did it probably two out of three laps, and I knew it was wide open for [Victor].” Victor grabbed the lead and led the final three circuits back around to the checkers to claim the $1,500 check, Lucas in second and Allen Weisser third. Weisser, the UMP Modified/Late Model veteran from Peoria, IL, ended up with one of the wildest stories at the end of the night. Rolling into the pits just in time for tech inspection and driver’s meeting, he took a blank #1w out of a Last Chance event and into the Feature, then climbed 18 positions from 21st after getting into an early wreck to finish on the podium. “I just kept plucking away at the bottom,” Weisser said of his charge through the field. “I kept trying to go up top a few times, and it really just wanted to push the front-end real bad, so I had to move down to the bottom.” He also provided one of the most unique stories on how his ride came together. Weisser normally pilots his own #25W around the bullrings of Illinois, but couldn’t pass up another offer earlier this week to go have some fun in Florida. “Kevin Weaver gave me a call and asked if I wanted to race for somebody, so I gave him a call,” Wessier said. “Not knowing the guy, I drove down to his shop, put this car together and came here.” Defending Winternationals champion Buzzy Adams had another solid points night, driving from 13th to finish sixth. Meanwhile, more misfortune struck Tyler Nicely, as he looped it in front of the field like he did on Wednesday night while running second late in the race. He finished 20th. The UMP Modified Winternationals action continues Friday night, Jan. 28, with another 30-lap, $1,500-to-win showdown. Moran Motors to Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Win at Golden Isles

Waynesville, GA (January 27, 2022) – Devin Moran took over the lead on lap 18 from Brandon Sheppard and pulled away from the field to win the 2022 season opener for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on Thursday Night at Golden Isles Speedway.
The Super Clean Super Bowl of Racing presented by eBay Motors was the first race held at Golden Isles since 2020, as the new promotional team of driver Kyle Bronson and his fiancé Amber Lloyd took over ownership of the track late last year.
The 27-year-old Ohio native was the fourth different leader of the race as he recorded his third career win in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Sheppard was looking to celebrate his 29th birthday with his first career win at Golden Isles but came home in second. Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion, Kyle Larson, who won the series’ season-opener last year at All-Tech, finished in third. Tyler Erb and defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion, Tim McCreadie rounded out the top five.
Larson grabbed the point at the start of the race after starting on the outside of the front row for the 40-lap main event. Erb challenged Larson for the first seven laps of the race as he saw the Texan move to the point on lap eight. Erb’s lead lasted until Sheppard went to the head of the pack on lap 14. Moran started third and saw the front of the field to his liking as he charged around Sheppard 18 laps into the race to take over the top spot which he held to the finish.
Sheppard had to fight off Larson over the last half of the race to secure the runner-up finish. Moran’s winning margin was 1.370 seconds over Sheppard. It was Moran’s first career win at Golden Isles, but he also has Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series wins at his home track, Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Oh, and at East Bay in 2020.
“This is just awesome. I was so nervous before the race because I felt like we were good in our heat race, and I just didn’t know what changes to make. I can’t thank Tye Twarog enough for giving me this opportunity. Ever since last year when we went with the Bilstein Shocks on this car it’s been really good.”
“This is probably the best I have seen this track. Thanks to Kyle Bronson, Amber, and everybody with them for the job they have done with this place. It was racy. This was our second race of the year, and it feels good to come down and win this one. The Longhorn Chassis was on point and the Clements Chevy power was flawless. Thanks to all of my sponsors who have continued their support, and we have added some new ones as well this year.”
Sheppard held off Larson by .3 tenths of a second at the finish. “It was a lot of fun out there tonight. Our car was good. We started sixth and got to the front pretty quick. We got by Terbo for the lead and then Devin got by us. It got to where I couldn’t steer coming off of the corner late in the race. It was a real good race up front between all of us. It’s a good start to Speedweeks for us and we will try to keep up the momentum from this.”
Larson was making his debut at Golden Isles. Leading early on, Larson faded back to fifth at one point during the race but rallied on to round out the podium. “This is a fun track to race on. We haven’t raced that much on this type of dirt, and we really haven’t raced much in Georgia. We were good early on and then went back a bit, but we got going again and had a good race with Sheppard there. It was a good clean race out there; I can’t wait to come back tomorrow night.”
The winner’s Tye Twarog-owned Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by C&W Trucking, Tommy Pope Construction, CarSourceAuto.com, Bilstein Shocks, Tri-Valley Equipment Sales, Accuforce Dynos and Testers Haulin’ Haskell’s, J.R. Hall Property LLC, Igimage.com, McHugh Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Fiat, and Red Oak Pub.
Completing the top ten were Ricky Thornton Jr., Josh Richards, Hudson O’Neal, Jonathan Davenport, and Jimmy Owens.

Automotive Racing Products Named Official Performance Fastener of Progressive AFT

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 27, 2022) – Progressive American Flat Track is excited to introduce Automotive Racing Products (ARP) as the Official Performance Fastener for the 2022-2024 Progressive AFT seasons.

The new partnership connects the world’s premier dirt track motorcycle racing series with the world leader in fastener technology. ARP’s bolts, nuts, and other fasteners utilize sophisticated design and metallurgic technology to ensure maximum performance even under the most extreme conditions. Along with Progressive AFT, its products are utilized by leading teams in Formula 1, NASCAR, Land Speed Racing, among many other motorsports, as well as in aerospace applications, including space travel.

“Flat Track racing is an excellent proving ground for the design and durability of ARP fasteners,” said Chris Raschke, director Sales and New Products. “We are delighted to form a partnership with Progressive AFT.”

ARP was founded in Southern California more than 50 years ago by Gary Holzapfel, who recognized fastener failure as an all-too-common issue with engines of the day. The result of that realization emerged a global power in the market that still proudly designs and manufactures its fasteners in the USA to this day.

“ARP’s products are well proven at the highest levels of motorsports,” said Gene Crouch, COO of Progressive American Flat Track. “We are thrilled to have them partner with America’s Original Extreme Sport, the perfect platform for ARP to showcase the performance and reliability of its fasteners.”

Progressive AFT will kick off the 2022 season with a Daytona Bike Week doubleheader on Thursday, March 10 and Friday, March 11 at Volusia Speedway Park. Secure your tickets to this bar-to-bar season opener now at https://store.americanflattrack.com/ebooking/ticket/view/id/3666.

GATOR CHASING: World of Outlaws Season Opener at DIRTcar Nationals is Two Week Away

Six Nights of Sprint Week at DIRTcar Nationals (Feb. 7-12)

BARBERVILLE, FL – January 27, 2022 – After an agonizing 96-day off-season, The Greatest Show on Dirt is ready to roar back to life.

For the 18th consecutive year, Barberville, FL’s Volusia Speedway Park will host the season opener for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. Running alongside the DIRTcar UMP Modifieds, the Series will compete at the half-mile over three nights from Thursday, February 10 to Saturday, February 12.

The World of Outlaws serves as the headlining portion of the six-night “Sprint Week” at the 51st DIRTcar Nationals, which also includes a practice night on Monday, February 7, and then two nights of the All Star Circuit of Champions on Tuesday & Wednesday, February 8-9.

BUY TICKETS HERE

Volusia’s three-night affair marks the official kick-off to a near 90-race slate for the World of Outlaws, as Ted Johnson’s creation enters the 45th season of competition in 2022. The Series is scheduled to appear at 45 tracks in 24 states this year, and it all starts with the lone trip to Florida in February.

With 48 previous appearances dating back to a wingless debut in 1981, Volusia Speedway Park is set to become the 16th track in history to host 50+ World of Outlaws Sprint Car events next month. Over that span, 18 different drivers have graced Volusia victory lane with eight of them scoring multiple wins.

The biggest target heading into the new year is obviously Brad Sweet and Kasey Kahne Racing, who will chase their fourth consecutive championship in 2022. The Big Cat owns eight total DIRTcar Nationals victories with six of them under the World of Outlaws banner, meaning a victory next month would make Volusia the winningest track of his 74-win career.

One of Sweet’s toughest title contenders will be Donny Schatz aboard the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #15 as he chases an 11th Series championship. The Fargo, ND native eclipsed 300 wins last year, led the points over the final 40 races, and enters 2022 with newfound momentum following an off-season of change in the TSR camp. He’s won a whopping 21 DIRTcar Nationals races with 13 of them coming with the Outlaws, making Volusia one of seven tracks with double-digit wins for Schatz.

Year two combinations David Gravel & Big Game Motorsports and Carson Macedo & Jason Johnson Racing will be aiming high following a stellar debut season in 2021. Gravel, of Watertown, CT, is a former DIRTcar Nationals winner with the All Stars, but still chases his first World of Outlaws win in Volusia as he & Crew Chief Cody Jacobs hope to kickstart their championship bid on top. For Macedo, the Lemoore, CA native enters as the defending Volusia winner following an incredible 10th-to-1st drive last March with ace Phil Dietz on the wrenches.

Both Shark Racing boys are locked and loaded for their ninth season with The Greatest Show on Dirt this year. Logan Schuchart has a fresh new scheme on the #1S and enters next month as the defending DIRTcar Nationals champion with another Big Gator Championship on his mind. Meanwhile, fan-favorite Jacob Allen has a fresh outlook and will run the Bobby Allen throwback scheme for all of 2022.

A trip to Volusia means returning to the site of Sheldon Haudenschild’s first-career victory, which came during the 2018 DIRTcar Nationals. Since then, the Wooster, OH native has climbed up the charts with 22 career victories, leaving him exactly 50 shy of his now retired and Hall of Fame father Jac Haudenschild. Lil’ Haud is back for his fifth season with Stenhouse Jr. Marshall Racing, vying for his first double-digit win campaign with Kyle Ripper still calling the shots on the NOS Energy Drink #17.

Kasey Kahne, who will fulfill a lifelong dream of competing full-time with the World of Outlaws in 2022, debuts the Karavan Trailers, FuelMe #9 two weeks from now. Although he still pursues his first-career Outlaws victory, Kahne is a previous winner at Volusia’s DIRTcar Nationals with a 2002 All Stars victory. He’ll be among three Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contenders this season.

Joining Kahne in the Rooke of the Year race is 23-year-old Spencer Bayston of Lebanon, IN aboard the CJB Motorsports #5 and 18-year-old Noah Gass of Mounds, OK in the family-owned #20G.

Veterans Jason Sides of Bartlett, TN and Kraig Kinser of Bloomington, IN will both return full-time with the Series in 2022. The #7S and #11K round out the crop of nine full-timers with winning experience at the Volusia half-mile.

Sophomore runners James McFadden of Alice Springs, NT and Brock Zearfoss of Jonestown, PA are both back for a second swing at the full World of Outlaws season. McFadden enters a new situation driving the Roth Motorsports #83, while Zearfoss remains aboard the family-owned #3Z.

All 14 of these stars will be on hand at Volusia Speedway Park to open the grueling World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car schedule when The Greatest Show on Dirt takes over at DIRTcar Nationals on February 10-12.

DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK: Bernhardt Returns to East Bay Winternationals Victory Lane

Adams charges 21st-to-fifth after Qualifying, Heat Race setbacks

TAMPA, FL – Jan. 26, 2022 – With seven track championships to his name, Bryan Bernhardt has seen the highest levels of success at East Bay Raceway Park. But on Wednesday night, he celebrated in Victory Lane like he’d never been there before.

In fact, it had been three years since his last DIRTcar UMP Modified Winternationals Feature win at the third-mile oval. With his friends, family and crew there to join in his jubilation, Bernhardt felt a deeper sense of meaning in this drought-ending win.

“This is my favorite place in the country,” Bernhardt said. “Every time they race, you can guarantee I’m back there on the backstretch, ready to go.”

Clinching the 2021 UMP Modified track championship was the fourth of his career in the division. But he said there once was a time where that success was hard to come by.

“We came out of the box hot when I first got a Modified, and the next year we were okay – I think we were top-six – but then we just fell off the map,” Bernhardt said.

His 2021 Winternationals campaign did not go the way he had planned either, experiencing mechanical failure multiple times throughout the week. So, he and the team went to Lethal Chassis and Mullins Race Engines and found the ingredients for their success right off the bat in 2022.

“Last year, we went through three motors,” Bernhardt said. “Saturday night, I was like, ‘I don’t want to race,’ and my car owner said ‘We come to race. We’re racers.’ I said, ‘If we break another motor, you’re going to have to buy another one,’ and he said, ‘I don’t give a [expletive].’

“We came out of last year with our heads down. This year, we came prepared.”

A strong effort in qualifying, second in his group only to fastest overall Tyler Nicely, Bernhardt rolled-off ninth on the Feature starting grid. He motored his way up to the front in a hurry, cracking the podium in four laps.

He had his sights set on race leader Nicely, but a rare self-spin by the Kentucky heavy-hitter on Lap 3 sent him to the tail early – much to Bernhardt’s disappointment.

“I’d have given him the biggest Florida slide job he’d ever seen,” he said, when asked what he would have done to get by Nicely on his own. “I get to second and I just start seeing red. I get that close, and I could do some stupid stuff, but I was hoping that he didn’t [spin out] because he’s probably in the top-three best in the country, and I sure would have liked to pass him.”

Fellow Kentuckian Chris Wilson then inherited the lead and looked strong out front through the middle of the 25-lap race, but Bernhardt was mounting a charge behind him. Wilson got out of shape at the exit of Turn 2 on Lap 14, opening the door for Bernhardt to blow by on the top side.

“When I got in [to Turn 2], they said somebody hit one of the yuke tires,” Wilson said of his viewpoint in the incident. “I don’t know if they did or not, and it splashed some water up [on the track]. When I went through, I got it broadsided. I thought I was gonna spin it out.”

Now with the lead and an open track ahead, Bernhardt took off and defended the lead through multiple restarts in the second half of the race to score the win. With 59 other cars in the pit area, he knows the prestige he earned with the feat.

“I have tons of pressure [on me],” Bernhardt said. “Being here and being good every year, when these guys show up and if I don’t run well, then I just look like a chump.”

Crossing the stripe in second, Wilson, of Louisa, KY, was pleased with his car and the result, especially after fending off a constant challenger of his own in 2019 event champion Lucas Lee.

“If I could hit my marks just right, I thought I had a better car than Lee,” Wilson said. “But, I thought that he was more maneuverable than I was.”

Further back in the top-five was the two-time and defending Winternationals champion Buzzy Adams, who encountered setbacks right from the start, forcing him to come from the rear on multiple occasions. DIRTcar tech officials found a deck-height issue with his car prior to his Qualifying laps, which negated his Qualifying time.

This set the veteran from Cameron, WI, to the tail of his Heat Race, where he began mounting a breakneck charge to the front that was abruptly ended after getting collected in a spin in front of him. He drove it back to fourth, setting him up for a Last Chance Showdown win, ultimately placing him 21st on the Feature starting grid. He advanced 16 spots in the Feature to wind up fifth, saving him from getting buried early in event points.

The East Bay Winternationals action continues with Round 2 on Thursday night. A $1,500 check awaits the winner – stay up to date with all the latest news and content by following DIRTcar Racing on TwitterFacebook and Instagram.

Acura Motorsports at Daytona
Acura returns to Daytona International Speedway and the IMSA season-opening Rolex 24 as defending race champion, and pole qualifier for this year’s 60th running for sports cars at Daytona. The Wayne Taylor Racing duo of Filipe Albuquerque and Ricky Taylor, part of the defending race-winning lineup in 2021, took their Acura ARX-05 to victory in the 100-minute sprint race that set the starting field for this weekend’s Rolex 24.

The WTR lineup of Albuquerque, Taylor, Helio Castroneves and Alexander Rossi claimed victory in last year’s twice-around-the-clock Rolex 24 contest, 20 years after Acura’s first Daytona class win in 1991.

This will be Acura’s eighth Rolex 24 as a prototype manufacturer (1991-93, 2018-22). In addition to the overall win last year, and in 2016 under the HPD/Honda banner. Acura won the Camel Lights class at Daytona in 1991 and again in ‘92.

Acura first took part in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1991, winning Camel Lights with Comptech Racing and drivers Parker Johnstone, Steve Cameron and Bob Lesnett driving a Spice Acura SE90P. Acura repeated as Camel Lights winner in 1992, with Comptech drivers Johnstone, Cameron and Jimmy Vasser [who also won Honda’s first Indy car championship in 1996].

Running an Honda Performance Development prepared, production-based Honda V6 engine, Tequila Patrón ESM won the Rolex 24 overall in 2016 with Pipo Derani, Scott Sharp, Johannes van Overbeek and Ed Brown driving a Ligier JSP2-Honda.

Acura ARX-05
For 2022, the Acura DPi effort at Daytona again will be spearheaded by a pair of IMSA championship and Rolex 24-winning teams: Wayne Taylor Racing and Meyer Shank Racing.

Wayne Taylor Racing is a two-time IMSA championship team and four-time winner of the Rolex 24 (2017, 2019 and 2020-‘21). The diver lineup for the #10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 includes defending Michelin Endurance Cup champions Ricky Taylor, Filipe Albuquerque, and Alexander Rossi; joined by veteran endurance racer Will Stevens.

Following a four-year program racing and developing the Acura NSX GT3 Evo into a two-time IMSA GTD championship winner, Meyer Shank Racing is also a previous Daytona victory, winning the 50th running of the Rolex 24 in 2012. Driving the #60 Sirius/XM AutoNation ARX-05 will be veteran IMSA race winner Oliver Jarvis, second-generation racer Tom Blomqvist, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, and fellow Indy 500 victor Simon Pagenaud.

Type S graphics on both Acura ARX-05s reinforce the Precision Crafted Performance ties connecting Acura racing and production cars. Acura has recently announced production plans for Type S models of the NSX super car, TLX performance sedan and MDX sport utility vehicle.

Acura NSX GT3 Evo22
For 2022, Acura’s IMSA GTD effort in the Michelin Endurance Cup – the four endurance rounds of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – will be headed by Gradient Racing’s #66 Acura NSX GT3 Evo22.

The Gradient driver lineup includes two-time IMSA GTD champion Mario Farnbacher, partnered with HPD Academy graduate and 2021 Formula Regional Americas champion Kyffin Simpson; and the returning Till Bechtolsheimer. Veteran professional Marc Miller rounds out the driver quartet for the Rolex 24.

Acura’s production-based sports car racing program dates to 1986, the same year the brand debuted as the luxury and performance division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Victories and championships quickly followed, starting in the IMSA International Sedan series, where Acura won the Manufacturers’ Championship in 1987. The effort culminated in 26 victories and three consecutive Camel Lights Championships from 1991-93 for the Comptech Racing Acura-Spice and driver Parker Johnstone.

The Acura brand returned to IMSA sports car racing in 2017, with Meyer Shank Racing fielding a pair of new Acura NSX GT3s. Acura scored a pair of race victories and five podium finishes in a highly-successful debut season, then scored another pair of victories and finished second in the 2018 GTD championship. Developing the NSX GT3 Evo, MSR went on to win IMSA GTD championship in both 2019 and 2020, with Farnbacher taking the drivers’ title in both seasons.
