Ryan Ruhl Takes NUVU Fuels Dual On Dirt SOD Jim Coffey & Son Dirty 30

ERIE, MI (May 27, 2017) – On a night when rain was a persistent threat, Ryan Ruhl drove to the win in the Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP Jim Coffey & Son Plumbing & Heating Dirty 30 portion of the NUVU Fuels Dual On Dirt. Ruhl mastered the 26 car field by being the fastest overall qualifier, dominating the Engler heat, and taking home the SOD Big Money check of $2,000 for winning the feature.

Although rain wiped out other western Michigan race events, it didn’t stop a near-capacity crowd from the rare opportunity to see two headline classes, the Engine Pro Sprints on Dirt presented by ARP and the American Ethanol Late Model Tour in one event. The show was a real crowd pleaser as light rain fell for hours during the program, but never enough to stop the action.

Ruhl, in his familiar blue #16, showed his strength early, being the Lane Automotive/MSD Ignition Fast Master in the Engler Machine & Tool Heat group. He then drove from his 4th place heat race starting position to an easy win. Not to be outdone, Chad Blonde showed his strength by taking the COMP Cams heat. Steve Irwin took the RockAuto.com heat from 3rd.

Eric Smith suffered mechanical woes early in the program as did Brad Lamberson and Thomas Schinderle keeping them out of competition.

Jay Steinebach overcame heat problems to take the B-Main from his 6th place starting position.

Gregg Dalman took the early lead in the feature over pole sitter Chris Jones. By lap 6, Chad Blonde was on the move taking 2nd and setting sail after Dalman. Blonde took the lead on lap 12 and looked like the car to beat. Dain Naida spun off of turn four on lap 15 just after moving into the top 5 from 10th. At half way it was Blonde, Dalman, Ruhl, Boston Mead, and Joe Swanson. Two laps later, Chris Jones race ending when he flipped off the back straight. A lap later, Ruhl, who started 9th, snatched the lead from Blonde. Brett Mann spun in turn 4 on the next lap and rookie Andrew Scheid was collected by Mann and flipped hard, ending a frustrating night for him. After refueling during the red for Scheid, Steve Irwin, who was in 4th, dropped out with engine problems. Back under green, Ruhl charged to win with Blonde staying within striking distance, but not able to mount a serious challenge.

Age is a state of mind, which partially is why Buddy Lazier, who turns 50 years old on Oct. 31, drives himself year-round to prepare for the Indianapolis 500. Lazier will be the oldest competitor in the 101st Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, driving the No. 44 Lazier Racing Chevrolet. Team Chevy also will be represented in the 33-driver field by the youngest competitor.

Sage Karam will be 22 years, 2 months, 23 days old on race day.

Helio Castroneves recorded the quickest lap during “Carb Day” practice as 15 Chevrolet drivers made final on-track preparations to their race cars for the 101st Indianapolis 500.

Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Shell Fuel Rewards Team Penske Chevrolet, posted a lap of 227.377 mph/39.5819 seconds on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval to top the speed chart of the 33 drivers that logged a total of 960 laps during the one-hour session.

HOW MUCH DOES THE EXPERIENCE FACTOR COME INTO PLAY HERE? “I’m not a veteran here but it is my fourth time coming to this race. It’s still crazy to think. People keep saying I’m the youngest kid. There is still a lot to learn, and I’ve gone through a lot of troubles here at the speedway and I’ve learned things the hard way. That’s why I’m so confident coming in here to this race. I feel like I’ve gone through a majority of the hard times I can go through. There are only so many hard times before the good times come. I know I have to get through Turn One and pick the battles and when I need to fight them. Now that I’m racing sports cars, I’ve learned patience and feel really calm behind the wheel this year.
“Being the young guy has its pros and cons. If you do well then everyone thinks you’re the next great thing. If you do something bad, they think you’re a bust. But that’s part of it. I like coming to the track as the young guy. I just don’t know when it’s going to be that I’m not the youngest! But I like being able to represent the younger generation coming through racing. A lot of times, we don’t get the the opportunity to showcase our talent. So whenever I get the chance like here at the Indy 500, I need to maximize that opportunity. I’m coming in there with the hope of finishing the race and that it’s going to be up front.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH BUDD LAZIER, NO. 44 LAZIER RACING CHEVROLET:

WHEN OTHER DRIVERS WENT TO NASCAR OR FORMULA ONE, YOU WERE THE MAINSTAY. HOW MUCH PRIDE IS THERE IN THAT FOR YOU? “I think it’s lost sometimes that I also was the 2000 champion, and I should have won the 500 that year. (Juan Pablo) Montoya beat me by a tick, and we were quicker, too. After winning the race, you swear that you’ll be back there a lot. It’s really amazing, this place, how much has to go right to get back into Victory Lane. It’s when you run and you finish second like I did twice that haunt you and you don’t forget about. I can’t tell you how special this place is. There’s no racetrack that you’re in the corner for such a long time. You’re sustaining cornering here more and longer than anywhere in the world because it’s so flat and so fast that it really tests driver and machine. Back in those days, to me it was an easy decision. I had the option to go to Michigan (International Speedway) or be here at Indianapolis, and it was a no-brainer. IndyCar goes the way the Indy 500 goes. I had been running a 2-or 3-year-old race car and was going the corners as quick as the top two or three guys and I go onto the straightaway at Long Beach or some of those places trimmed, so in 1996 I knew I had a car that could win races. The super teams will still have an advantage, but a small team gets it all right and can win the race. That makes it exciting for the fans and competitors.”

WOULD YOU ENJOY RACING YOUR SON, FLYNN, HERE AT INDIANAPOLIS?
“As a driver, I think he is very gifted. It’s not necessarily the career I would have chosen for him, bug before you know it it’s sort of in the blood. I expect him to move up through the ranks as quickly as he is able to do so depending on sponsorship. It makes sense that we’re building an IndyCar effort for the future and he’s a driver for the future. I look at some of the other owner/drivers who have done that sort of thing, and I think the Rahals are one of the best examples. It’s nice to have options. It’s not ideal to run for your father or grandfather, but at the same time it’s nice to have options. It’s a potential opportunity for him and us in the future. We want to provide him the very best of what we can provide, so our team would have to grow to do that. I know his mother and I always thought that it would be cool if we raced together. I would enjoy that. I’m not entirely sure how much time I have left in terms of years, but I’m not there yet.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR PLACE IN HISTORY AT THE SPEEDWAY?
“I don’t think a lot about that, but it is a little staggering that there have been 100 Indy 500s and I have taken part in 20 of those. And there were another five that for various reasons we got left out. I take pride in that. A few seconds less and I would be a three-time winner.”
