“I knew that yellow was coming. I don’t know how many races we actually won last year. There was that one at Watkins Glen and a few more. I just can’t thank the whole team and Corvette fans enough and Corvette Racing and all the guys and these two drivers (teammates). We all did amazing. We stayed out of trouble. The car is in perfect shape. Not a single touch. I think that’s what it takes just to keep it alive and bring it home in one piece, that’s the thing. You can see it when you’re out there racing. The BMWs, the Porsches… they’re all pushing so hard and it’s hard not to get caught up in it. So far it’s gone well. “It went OK. I’m not really comfortable in the car for some reason. The car is very tricky under braking and it’s easy to lock up the rears or the front. For awhile I was getting more comfortable and then made a mistake and had to give up the lead. In terms of pure pace when you put a lap together, it’s right there with the other guys. But we are simply running with a little bit of inconsistency and you can’t attack the corners. We’re about a second a lap slower than last year, which is a little annoying. HOW WAS YOUR OPENING COUPLE OF STINTS?
“My stint was OK… nothing special. I would say my second stint was a lot better. We made some tire adjustments and had a much stronger pace – just as strong as the leaders but maybe the leaders although the leader was slightly quicker than I was. Then we decided to double-stint the tires, which at this point in the race wasn’t the right decision. After five to 10 laps, I was a sitting duck for the most part. TAKE US THROUGH THE EARLY STAGES, HOW DID IT GO?
“We’ve been having incredible electrical issues this weekend, We’ve been without traction control all week as well as wheel speed sensor and other issues. The team has been absolutely thrashing, and last night we thought we had a solution for it. Then we didn’t know until the start of the race that we were about 50/50 as to whether it was going to work or not. I went out for the start, and something felt funny with the throttle pedal. TC (traction control) wasn’t working again, and then we had an additional problem, the engine was cutting out up to a half a second or a second at a time. I was just thinking here we go for the 24 Hour and here we have all of these problems. We just kind of ran around until the fuel window opened and then we pitted. We shut the car off, plugged in the updates from the engine guys and went back out and everything was perfect. So, I’m very happy. Now we have a car we can go race with. We restarted with a bunch of GT cars between us and the leader, We picked our way through some of the prototype field. Felt like we were a lot stronger than the No. 01 other than in the straight.
