“What a race. This AAA team never gave up today. We were running in the top 15 when something let go in the right front of the car and sent me into the wall. I was having to pump the brakes there the last couple of restarts to get some pressure. I think that was the issue when we got into the wall. It’s just a bummer. I feel bad for this AAA team who have worked hard all weekend. We had a solid car, just a part failure. It’s part of racing and we’ll be back next week. We were able to get back out there and make up some points. I have to thank the AAA tow truck for the extra push to get me restarted on one of the last cautions. That’s one of the big benefits that Jeg Coughlin Jr. was able to deliver to his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team on Sunday when he beat Drew Skillman in the first round of the 36th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Allen Johnson Propels Marathon Petroleum Dodge to Semifinal Round at NHRA Southern Nationals

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 15, 2016) – Raceday at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals manifested a semifinal round appearance for the Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson. After qualifying in the top half of the field, Johnson went to the third round before his raceday efforts were halted by eventual event winner Jason Line.

First round, Johnson had lane choice over Vincent Nobile. Johnson ripped the early numbers on that pass and crossed the finish line with a 6.600-second pass at 209.79 against Vincent’s equally quick 6.602, 208.78. The margin of victory in the first round was .0118-seconds with Johnson taking the win. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE AT THE END?
“We were really good. We were better than Matt (Kenseth) there. A lot of good cars got wrecked which was nice and I knew I was going to be the car to probably beat. I got to second there on the restart and just tried to be patient. I could see Matt was pretty loose in front of me. I was just waiting for him to make a mistake and he did make a couple of mistakes, but it’s so hard to pass somebody on the bottom here because they can suck down on your door on exit and slow you down. I was probably a little too patient in the beginning and allowed Chase (Elliott) to get close to us and actually get by me. I don’t remember how I got back by him, but I did get back by him and we raced pretty hard there for a few laps and Matt got out a good bit. I didn’t think I would catch him, but I got another shot at him at the end and was trying to do all I could to pass him without getting into him. Matt, except for a couple of instances last year, he is probably the cleanest driver out here. I wanted to race him with all that respect and felt like I did a good job. I probably could have got into him in the middle of (Turns) 1 and 2 there once and maybe got by him, but I didn’t want to do that. Looking back maybe I should have because I could be in the Chase right now, but we will just keep working hard. We are getting some really good cars built at our shop now. We struggled to start the season, but Jamie (McMurray) and I both have been pretty fast here the last few weeks. Hopefully, we can keep it rolling. “As soon as I went from second and tried to go to third, I kind of got up into the neutral gate of the transmission and didn’t even go to third. It stopped before it ever went to third. And then I tried fourth and third and fourth and eventually I got hit from behind. There was a long pause there where I was trying to, I thought maybe I missed a shift; but it wouldn’t go in gear. Martin (Truex, Jr.) was good and patient with me. He gave me a couple of opportunities to try to find a gear and it just locked out and wouldn’t go into gear for some reason. ATLANTA (May 15) — Reigning back-to-back Pro Stock champion Erica Enders knew she left on first-round opponent Chris McGaha, and as she went through the gears of her Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge Dart a big smile started to cross her face.

Then, in an instant, it was gone, as a big bump in her lane upset her race car enough that it shot towards the centerline. Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson No. 6 Headed into Raceday at NHRA Southern Nationals

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 14, 2016) – Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson qualified No. 6 at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Johnson will have lane choice over Vincent Nobile in the first round of eliminations on Sunday morning.

On Friday’s first session, Johnson started the weekend off with a solid 6.670-second pass at 207.11 mph. Johnson returned for Friday’s night session and improved his qualifying effort with a 6.649, 208.46, putting him in the No. 6 spot and the top half of the field.

Saturday’s hot weather made track conditions tricky but Johnson and the Marathon team were able to get down Atlanta Dragway with a conservative 6.725, 205.76. He came back for the final round of qualifying and crossed the finish line with a 6.687, 207.30.

“You know, we started out good,” said Johnson. “The track got a little challenging today and we didn’t make a good run in Q3 at all. Then, I made some mistakes in my driving in Q4 but we’ve got a good car for tomorrow.”

Johnson will enter into raceday with his choice of lane over Vincent Nobile in the first round. Johnson knows how important lane choice will be on his path to the winner circle this weekend in his Dodge Dart.

“If the track remains how it has been all weekend, lane choice is going to be very important,” he stated. “The lanes look pretty even but tomorrow is supposed to be a lot cooler with cloud cover so anytime you get lane choice tomorrow, it has the potential to be very significant.”

After qualifying No. 2 for the J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series race presented by Pro Line Racing and FuelTech, Coughlin was confident heading into eliminations, but after a fast start in his first-round race with Kevin Fiscus, Coughlin hit a bump on the track that his JEGS.com Corvette didn’t like. Strong, Top-Five Run Derailed at Dover International Speedway for the No. 2 Richmond/Menards Team

“I have to thank my guys for their hard work this weekend in Dover. We had to roll out the backup car after an issue during practice on Friday, and they worked nonstop to get the car ready for final practice. For a backup car, we had a lot of speed during qualifying, and I knew we’d have a shot at a top-five finish. The car was loose, but manageable during the first half of the race and the guys made a track bar adjustment that set us up well for the remaining laps. Not long after pit stops, I felt something break in the right front and had to come down pit road so the guys could determine what happened. Once we got back on track, I think we were nine laps down without many laps left, so we just survived to the end. I know Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and the guys will go back and try to figure out what happened. I’m looking forward to my next race with this Richmond/Menards team in Pocono.”
