Blaney, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Planning Championship-Caliber Effort At Chicagoland

Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team won’t be running for a championship this weekend at the Chicagoland Speedway, but they will be in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 and will be racing just as hard as they would have if they’d made the cut for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

That’s a major improvement over last year when Blaney and his then-part-time team showed up at Chicago with a fast Ford Fusion but did not get to race it.

Mooresville, NC (September 14, 2016)—The Ninth Annual NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte this weekend is a game changer for Team Summit Racing. It’s the first of six races in the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship to determine the champions in Pro Stock, Top Fuel, and Funny Car.

The Countdown to the Championship is the playoffs for the NHRA. The points system is readjusted for the top 10 drivers in each category. The first-place driver begins the playoffs with 2,110 points followed by 2,080 for second and down to 2,000 for 10th place.

CHARLOTTE (Sept. 14) — If it’s nearing the end of the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Racing Series season, then JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. must be heating up.

That’s exactly what’s happening as Coughlin prepares for the NHRA Carolina Nationals this weekend at zMax Dragway.

Coughlin, the two-time Pro Mod champion, qualified No. 1 and raced to the final round of the U.S. Nationals two weeks ago in the seventh of 10 Pro Mod races, and he chopped Rickie Smith’s lead down to 87 points with three races remaining.

“Heading into Charlotte and getting a little closer on the points and all of that is exciting,” Coughlin said. “I love the Charlotte track and I love the fans in Charlotte. What a great place to race. I’m looking forward to being there and getting back to racing. We’re pretty fired up to get there. 2016: The Road So Far… With 15 races completed in the 2016 season, Red Horse Racing is fifth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver championship point standings with driver Timothy Peters. This Week’s Toyota Tundra at Chicagoland Speedway… Timothy Peters will pilot chassis No. 023 from the Red Horse Racing stable on Friday in the American Ethanol e15 225. This chassis was last used by Peters at Michigan International Speedway where he led 42 laps and recorded a second-place finish.

Peters at Chicago… Peters has recorded seven starts at Chicagoland Speedway and has two top-five and three top-10 finishes. He has an average starting position of 13.9 and an average finishing position of 13.9.

Race Rewind: Canada… In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ fourth trek north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (CTMP), Timothy Peters had transmission issues just past the halfway point, which foiled a top-five run, and handed Peters and his Red Horse Racing team an 18th-place finish in the 64-lap event. Crew chief Shane Huffman would not call Peters to pit road until lap 24, when Peters would come in for four Goodyear tires and Sunoco fuel. Huffman’s strategy would have Peters visit pit road once more for fuel only under green on lap 34. That fuel strategy netted Peters the fourth position by lap 40, but he fell victim to transmission woes shortly thereafter on lap 43, losing third gear completely. The veteran driver nursed his No. 17 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra home in 18th. With one race before the Chase, the 18th-place result keeps Peters in the eighth position on the Chase grid, 32 points ahead of the cutoff.

Race Rewind: Canadian Tire Motorsports Park… Brett Moffitt recorded a 16th-place finish at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. After the green flag flew under gorgeous sunny skies, Moffitt fell back slightly, but continued to run in the top-10. With 30 laps to go, Zipadelli called Moffitt to pit road for four more tires and fuel under green flag conditions. The Iowa native worked his way back into the top-10, but was involved in an incident with another competitor on lap 54 and sustained damage. Moffitt made two stops for the No. 11 team to repair the damage and change four tires, With nine laps to go, Moffitt restarted in 24th and with the help of two laps of overtime, made his way to the 16th position to take the checkered flag.

Early Wreck Relegates Blaney, SKF Ford Team to a 39th-Place Finish at Richmond

A crash just 10 laps into Saturday’s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway took Ryan Blaney and his SKF Ford team out of contention for a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and eliminated any chance for a good finish in the race.

Blaney took the No. 21 SKF Fusion to the garage where his crew spent more than 100 laps patching up the damage. He returned him to the track and gained one spot to finish 39th.

Blaney described the contact with Trevor Bayne that preceded his spin into the wall as “unfortunate” and said one of his biggest regrets was not being able to deliver a strong race for sponsors SKF and Motion Industries.

“I thought I was clear,” Blaney said. “It is an unfortunate race deal.”

“I want to thank SKF for being on board. I wish we could have worked on our car and gotten it better throughout the night.

“It is unfortunate that we didn’t get to run to see where our car was going to go. That is the most unfortunate part about this. We didn’t even give ourselves a shot at it. That is something I will have regret about.”

“All we can do is go on to Chicago and try to do better there.”

Team co-owner Eddie Wood praised his crew for getting the No. 21 Fusion back on the track and running with good speed despite considerable damage.

“They did a good job putting it back together,” Wood said. “Even with the car torn up, Ryan was turning some good lap times.”

Wood also said he’s glad his Wood Brothers team will get another chance to better represent SKF.

“They will be back on the car at Phoenix, and we will do our best to represent them well there,” Wood said.

The No. 21 team will be back with sponsor Motorcraft/Quick Lane this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway to begin the final 10 races of the 2016 season.

“I’m just proud of our effort, our team, everything we went through this year. We shouldn’t have been in this situation. We had good enough cars to not have to be in this situation, but, hey, we were in a tight situation down to the end. Especially, with the No. 5 up there near the end, but we were racing the No. 1 all night, we did our job, we stayed in that buffer. I’m proud to be here. I’m just excited. The stress level is off of me. I’m not going to take stress into the Chase. I’m going to go have fun and try to win, look at it with no pressure situation. I can’t thank everyone at Dow enough for all of their support over the last three years. I’m proud to be in this Chase.”

Contact With Another Car Ends Paul Menard’s Night Early in the Dutch Boy Menards Chevrolet at Richmond

“This was not how we wanted to end the night here at Richmond. We had a good Dutch Boy / Menards Chevrolet and worked our way through the field pretty well after starting 30th. We were fighting inside the top 15 when we were hit and sent into the wall. The damage was just too much to continue. We’ll go on to Chicagoland and see what we can do there.”

Chase Bid for Ryan Newman and Caterpillar Team Ends After Accident While Running in the Top 10

“I’m fine. I think it was pretty obvious watching the video. I don’t even have to watch it. The No. 14 (Tony Stewart) cut across my nose into Turn 1 and I got into him after that, but he’d already chopped into me and messed up my line and I clipped him a little bit coming off of (Turn) 2; but he just cut across my nose. We’ll keep fighting like we always do. It’s just unfortunate not to end the way we wanted to. I want to thank Caterpillar, Grainger, WIX Filters and everybody else who helps put this on. But, it’s just disappointing. It’s tough. We will keep fighting for a victory. It’s what we are here for.”
