Giovanni Scelzi Pleased With Experience Gained During First Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi soaked in as much of his first appearance at the Trophy Cup as possible.

While the end result wasn’t what Scelzi desired, he said he gained a ton of knowledge and confidence during the 23rd edition of the marquee event hosted by Thunderbowl Raceway.

“It’s definitely something we can build on,” he said. “Getting on the fence, you run in as hard as you can. It’s being able to enter at the right angle, leaving your foot on the floor and trusting it. It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve done.”

Scelzi opened the event, which was only his second time at the tricky track, last Thursday by qualifying 22nd quickest in his group. He then placed fourth in a heat race before charging from 14th to a seventh-place result in a B Main, which was only three positions shy of transferring into the main event. Here is a link to watch the B Main: https://youtu.be/OxUhlE1UgKs.

“Qualifying put our night behind the eight ball, but I got to run 20 laps around Thunderbowl Raceway in the B Main so that was a plus,” he said. “I would have liked to make the feature to get more laps, but I felt like I improved throughout the night.”

That was evident from the start of Friday’s program, which Scelzi kicked off by qualifying 11th quickest in his group. He again finished fourth in a heat race before scoring a third-place result in a B Main to transfer into the back of the main event.

“I felt like from the first night to the second night I was so much more aggressive and being able to race around other cars,” he said. “It’s difficult for me to slide guys and make the right moves and not lose momentum, which are things that I’ll learn with more time in the seat.”

Scelzi then advanced from 21st to 17th place in the main event. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/TJb5kbwp8Us.

“The feature was pretty much one lane around the infield so there wasn’t much passing,” he said. “We were pleased with moving forward and getting more laps around that place. I think we’ll continue to show improvement with each race in Tulare.”

Unfortunately, the event wrapped up early for Scelzi, who was sidelined from Saturday’s finale because of a mechanical problem that developed during hot laps.

This season is no different as the reigning champ arrives at this weekend’s 16th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals with a chance to claim his third championship of the last five years.

“It was really a fun Every time I would make a mistake and get shuffled to the middle it seemed like the crew guys would bring back a solid pit stop to put us in position and to be in control. It feels good when we have that plus alongside our name in points. I was trying to ease it for Tony Gibson (crew chief) and all these guys that work so hard. There was some rooting and gouging at the end and I got some damage. I don’t even know where we finished, but all I was shooting for was top 15.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega–Post Race

For the final race of the Round of 8 in the The Chase to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship, teams traveled to Talladega, Alabama and the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway. On Friday, two practice sessions were scheduled and Timothy Peters posted the 10th fastest lap in the first and did not participate in the second. Matt Tifft returned to the No. 11 Surface Sunscreen/BrainGear Toyota Tundra and posted the ninth and sixth fastest laps. On Saturday morning, teams returned for two rounds of single-truck elimination qualifying and Peters transferred into the final round, then secured the sixth starting spot, while Tifft also transferred and started the fred’s 250 in the 12th position. In the afternoon, the green flag flew for 94 laps at the legendary facility, and Peters quickly charged to the front, leading 14 laps. Tifft also made his way to the front and led three laps. A late race caution flag derailed Peters’ run for the win, but the veteran driver finished third and secured his spot in the second round of the drivers’ Chase for the championship. Tifft also picked up a top 10 finish and crossed the line in ninth earning the No. 11 team a spot in the next round of the Owners’ Chase.

Timothy Peters Finishes Third to Secure Place in Chase Round of Six

Timothy Peters and the No. 17 Red Horse Racing team finished third at Talladega Superspeedway to secure a berth in the second round of the Chase for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship. The weekend began with two practice sessions scheduled for Friday, but Peters and crew chief Shane Huffman decided the No. 17 Tundra was dialed in after posting the 10th fastest lap in the first session and sat the second session out. In two rounds of single-truck, knockout qualifying on Saturday morning, Peters transferred to the final round and secured the sixth starting spot for the fred’s 250 with a lap of 53.982 seconds. Peters charge to the front of the field right off the bat, jumping to second place on the first lap. The Danville, Virginia native took the lead on lap 32 and led several laps until the caution flag flew. Huffman brought Peters to pit road for fuel only and the No. 17 returned to the track in the second position. He would pick up the lead again on lap 40 for several more laps, but a series of cautions and a slow pit stop would set him back in traffic. The series veteran made his way back to the top five, but a lack of drafting partner and a caution in the closing laps limited him to a third-place finish. Peters will enter the Chase Round of 6 as the third seed.

Chevrolet Drivers Make Strides Against Breast Cancer
Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Kasey Kahne treat breast cancer survivors to Chevy SS pace car rides

TALLADEGA, Ala. (Oct. 22, 2016) – This morning at Talladega Superspeedway, Team Chevy drivers Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and Kasey Kahne participated in Chevrolet’s annual event in partnership with the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The drivers took a group of breast cancer survivors and their guests on pace car rides in pink and white Chevrolet SS pace cars.

During the Hellmann’s 500 on Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway, Chevrolet will donate $350 per caution lap (up to $50,000) that the Chevrolet SS pace car leads during the 188-lap event.

Below are the drivers thoughts on participating in the event:

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 JIMMY JOHN’S CHEVROLET SS:
HIS EXPERIENCE GIVING PACE CAR RIDES TO THE BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS:
“It was a great experience. It’s always fun to give people an experience of driving around the race track in person. I don’t think a lot of people can put it really in perspective the banking, especially at this particular race track… the size, how wide and how big the whole race track is. It’s always fun. I only had a few people squeal; everybody else seemed to have a good time.”

KASEY KAHNE, NO. 5 UNIFIRST CHEVROLET SS:
ON HIS EXPERIENCE DURING PACE CAR RIDES:
“We had a good time. I think we took four or five groups. We really enjoyed it. A couple of groups were screaming and a couple were just sitting back having fun. It was a blast. This track is such a big track, but the banking in the corners bottom to top was enjoyable. I think they loved it.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET SS:
ON GIVING PACE CAR RIDES TO THE GROUP OF BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND THEIR GUESTS:
“It was fun. I haven’t really got to do pace car rides at Talladega. I’ve done them at Martinsville and we have done the drifting event obviously for Cessna, but it was fun. It’s crazy to see how tense they get when they leave pit road. It was a good time.”

TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR TEAM’S APPROACH GOING INTO THIS WEEKEND:
“I think for us we are obviously disappointed in the way the past two weeks have gone having such strong cars over the past two weeks and having the ability to go and contend with some of those guys. Obviously, to end like it did was disappointing, but for us it puts us in a pretty simplistic situation for this weekend and having to have a really good run, if not have to win. Like I said, it’s a simple position that we are in and we are up for the challenge and looking forward to Sunday.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega–Chase Elliott
