Giovanni Scelzi Kicking Off Sprint Car Season This Weekend at Silver Dollar Speedway and Antioch Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (March 27, 2017) – Giovanni Scelzi is coming off a banner season during his rookie year of racing a full-sized sprint car.

Scelzi recorded the King of Kings title thanks to four podiums, seven top fives and 12 top 10s during 17 races in 2016. The effort led to Scelzi being named the North American 360 Sprint Car Poll Rookie of the Year Award from a voting panel of media members, promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers. Austin Dillon and the No. 3 American Ethanol Chevrolet SS Team Earn Best Season-To-Date Finish at Auto Club Speedway

“Our American Ethanol Chevrolet was good on the long run, but tight on takeoff throughout the day today. I wish we could have done more with the position we were in with tires. On the outside lane, we could not fire off the first couple of laps. We struggle with that and we’re going to start practicing it and figuring out why we can’t turn. Overall, though, the green and black Chevy had speed and our pit crew was fast so I’m proud of my guys. We always want more, and we’re going to do what we can to get even more out of our finishes.”

Paul Menard and the No. 27 Jack Link’s/Menards Chevy Team End West Coast Swing with a 28th-Place Finish in California

“Everyone on the No. 27 team worked hard these last three weeks. This West Coast swing is tough on everybody and it’ll be good to get home. I’m not sure what to say about today. We have some work to do on our splitters and getting that right. The car just wasn’t in the track and the front end wasn’t working right all race. Matt Borland made calls for good adjustments and we were turning better by the end, but it wasn’t enough. We’ll re-group, take a look at our notes and come back determined at Martinsville Speedway.”

Ryan Newman Rebounds After Rough Race Start at Auto Club Speedway to Finish 15th

“It was a tough and long day for us in the Caterpillar Chevrolet at Auto Club Speedway. Unfortunately, we began the race on a negative note with a hole in the front nose on the first lap that cost us our track position. Then we battled an extremely tight-handling car that put us a lap down. We finally raced back onto the lead lap with 19 to go. It certainly wasn’t the finish we wanted, especially considering where we practiced and qualified this Chevrolet, but it was a decent recovery.”

Larson led a race-high 110 of the 202 laps en route to his first win at the 2-mile venue. KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – RACE WINNER
“I was staying as calm as I could be, but also frustrated at the same time. It seems like every time I get to the lead at the end of one of these things, the caution comes out and I’ve got to fight people off on restarts. Our Target Chevy was amazing all day. We were able to lead a lot of laps today. (Martin) Truex was better than us that second stage by quite a bit. We were able to get the jump on him the following restart and led pretty much the rest of the distance. I had to fight them off there after the green flag stops and that was a lot of fun. I can’t thank Target enough, Credit One Bank, all of our partners, Chip Ganassi, Rob Kauffman, Felix Sabates, I hope you are feeling better at home, wish you were here. This is just amazing. We have been so good all year long; three seconds in a row. I’ve been watching all the TV like ‘he doesn’t know how to win’, but we knew how to win today, so that was good.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE PRESSURE IS OFF?
“Yeah, no doubt. I made a mistake early in the race and lost a lot of track position sliding through my (pit) box, but they had awesome pit stops all day long. Great pit stops there at the end especially and our restarts were good. I spun my tires a couple of them and had to drag race Denny (Hamlin) and Kyle (Busch) into Turn 1, but we had a good last restart, got some clean air and came on to the win. Like I said, I can’t thank everybody up here enough and everybody at the shop too. They have been working their tails off all off-season and it’s carried over into this year. It’s spectacular all the hard work is paying off.”

WHAT WAS IT THAT PROPELLED YOU ALL THE WAY AROUND DENNY (HAMLIN) AND EVERYBODY ELSE?
“We had a few lap fresher tires than them and I knew that was going to be very important to get to the lead quick. I was hoping we weren’t going to have a caution like we had. We were just able to have a good restart there on the last one and get a really good push by Truex on that launch. I got a little nervous that he might peel underneath me or try and get above me, but we were able to carry enough momentum around to hold onto the lead and ultimately get the win. Can’t say enough about everybody on this Target team, Credit One Bank. The crew is amazing, our pit crew has been spectacular this year and we have had a lot of speed in our race cars. It is a lot of fun to come to the race track right now.”

TAKE US THROUGH THE LAST PIT STOP:
“I knew my pit crew was really good, so I actually ran a little bit slower down pit road by one light just to be safe. I didn’t want to speed, I didn’t want to do anything stupid and we were able to get the jump there off pit road and line up on the outside, which was awesome.”

WHAT HAPPENED IN STAGE 2 AND WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE IN STAGE 3?
“Well, I had slide through my (pit) box at the end of that first stage and I had to overdrive some to get to second and then Truex was just really good that run and I had run the top of (Turns) 3 and 4 and probably wore my tires out too much. When I got to the lead in the third stage I knew to just commit to the bottom of (Turns) 3 and 4 and save my tires the best I could. Our long run was really good the rest of the race.”

CHIP GANASSI, TEAM OWNER, CHIP GANASSI RACING – RACE WINNER
“I’m pretty excited today here with the sweep this weekend. It’s all Kyle Larson this weekend, all Kyle Larson.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET SS – Finished 6th
“Our team and our whole organization has done an amazing job to get to the point that we are. It’s not one thing; it’s hundreds of small things. I’m so happy for all the guys at our shop that have worked hard. In our sport, every team works hard; and you’re not always rewarded for it. It’s awesome to be rewarded for all the work.

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 NAPA CHEVROLET SS – Finished 10th
ON THE RACE AND PIT STRATEGY:
‘Yeah, we were just trying to do something different. I thought that was going to give us the best chance of winning. Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) did as well. We had a good NAPA Chevy and we were on the same page. He made the right call. And, you can’t control when the caution comes out. So, that’s just part of it.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 AMERICAN ETHANOL CHEVROLET SS – Finished 11th
“I wish we could have done more with the position we were in with tires. On the outside lane, we cannot fire off the first couple of laps. We struggle with that and I’m going to start practicing it and figuring out why we can’t turn. I’m proud of my guys, but I guess we just wanted more.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET SS – Finished 15th
“It was a tough and long day for us. We got a hole in the front nose on the first lap that cost us our track position. Then we battled an extremely tight-handling car that put us a lap down. We finally raced back onto the lead lap with 19 to go. It certainly wasn’t the finish we wanted but it was a decent recovery.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 47 RALPH’S CLICKLIST CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 17TH
“We definitely started off really loose which, kind of thought we might just going into the race just trying to get on the other side of it. I was still a little bit tight trying to roll the center, which is kind of where we have been struggling a little bit, but made good adjustments and thought we got the car as good as we could have gotten it. It was kind of right in that area. I thought we maximized the speed of the car today and wish we would have had one less yellow. I really thought I had made a good move and gotten clear of the next group behind me and thought maybe we would pick off a couple more. Just that wrong if you do, wrong if you don’t kind of scenario. Didn’t pit on the last one even though we only had a lap and a half on tires, it just… all the guys behind me for the most part had tires. I knew my only shot was to get clear off of Turn 2 and I got pinned three-wide and from there all the guys with the new tires were kind of able to eat me alive. Disappointing, I thought we were going to get a little bit better, but the West Coast swing has been really tough for us. We have learned a lot. I think we know where to work on and hopefully we continue to get better.”

TY DILLON, NO. 13 TWISTED TEA CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 18TH
“My No. 13 Twisted Tea Chevrolet team fought hard all day. We really struggled with the balance in the first two stages. I was tight through the center and loose on exit. Crew chief Bootie Barker worked with different adjustments to get us where we needed to be. Our Chevy SS was the best it had been all day there in that last segment. We made a strategy call and stretched our gas mileage to try and make it with only one green-flag stop to end the race while the leaders would need another, but late-race cautions kept that from working. We battled hard and, despite handling issues, it was a good end to the day.”

CHRIS BUESCHER, NO. 37 BUSH’S BEANS CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 25TH
“It was a long afternoon in our No. 37 BUSH’s Beans Chevy. We got a decent starting spot, but got shuffled back early and struggled to gain spots back. Then on the last restart everyone got fanned out from another car getting in the wall and we just lost all momentum. Next week we’ve got a completely different setup as we go short track racing and I’m looking forward to racing with the short track program at JTG Daugherty racing.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS – Finished 21st:
“Man, we definitely didn’t have the fastest car out there today. I think we used up all the good luck in the season finale last season. We battled all day long to get back on the lead lap, but we have got some work to do. I’m looking forward to spending the week with my girls and heading to Martinsville next weekend with this Lowe’s team.”

On-Track Incident Slows Momentum for Paul Menard and the No. 2 Richmond/Menards Chevrolet Team at Auto Club Speedway

“We had a fast car today. Justin Alexander made a good call during the second round of pit stops but we were tagged for too many men over the wall. The penalty is starting from the rear of the field, but we were able to make our way back to the front pretty quickly. I’m not sure what happened with Eric Jones, if he was trying to push me or just crossing over. I think he definitely had a brain fart. All weekend long I thought we were at least a third-place car. The leaders weren’t getting away from us before the wreck. We were actually gaining on them. Everyone on this No. 2 Richmond/Menards Chevy works hard and I’m looking forward to my next race with this team. We learned a lot for tomorrow and that’s all you can hope for.”

– Paul Menard

Despite Late-Race Lug Nut Issue, Ty Dillon Earns Top-10 Finish at Auto Club Speedway

“Our No. 3 team just can’t seem to catch a break this year. We started off with a loose Ruud Chevrolet Camaro in the first stage, but we were able to make adjustments at the end of it to really improve the overall balance for the rest of the race. We were able to keep up with the leaders, but we couldn’t seem to find the speed that they had. So when we had the opportunity to try and catch people with fresh tires towards the end of the race, we took it. We came in with the leaders and took four sticker tires with 36 laps left and restarted in 20th, but I was able to pick cars off pretty easily with new tires. I moved all the way up to 6th, and it’s unfortunate that a missing lug nut after our stop during the last caution set us back to 22nd. I did all that I could in those final laps to get us back into the top 10, but I just needed a little more time. It was definitely not the way we wanted to end the day, but I know that I’ve got a great group of guys pitting my car each weekend. They were great all day, and I know that we’ll be ready for another strong finish in Texas.”

– Ty Dillon

Daniel Hemric Secures Career-Best NASCAR XFINITY Series Starting Position at Auto Club Speedway En Route to Top-15 Finish

“This was definitely not the finish we had in mind when we started on the outside of the front row with the No. 21 Blue Gate Bank Chevrolet. We worked on the handling of the car throughout the entire race, but never got it to where we wanted it. Danny Stockman did a great job of making adjustments all day long. We had an issue on pit road in the middle of the race, but were able to fight our way back toward the front of the field. We’ll take everything we learned on this West Coast swing and go to work at Texas Motor Speedway in two weeks.”

– Daniel Hemric

Late-Race Incident Forces Brandon Jones to a 32nd-Place Finish at Auto Club Speedway

“Our No. 33 Chevrolet Truck Month Chevrolet Camaro just didn’t have the handling we needed it to this weekend at Auto Club Speedway. We chased it for most of the race, constantly needing more grip and more turn. Toward the middle of the race, we had it figured out pretty good running in the top 12. We were able to play some fuel strategy in the hopes that it would turn out like last year’s race and we could capitalize on others’ mistakes. Ultimately, the handling got too loose and it snapped going into Turn 1 with less than 10 laps to go from the 12th spot, causing us to have some pretty heavy front-end damage. My guys worked hard to get me back out there and we were able to finish the race, just not in the position we deserved.”

– Brandon Jones

Brendan Gaughan Ends West Coast Swing with 33rd-Place Finish at Auto Club Speedway

“This isn’t how we wanted to close out our West Coast swing. I ran everywhere, from the low line all the way to the grass on the apron, to the high line all the way to the wall. Let the record show that I ran the bottom at Auto Club Speedway. That’s the only good thing I can say about today. We had three fast cars during NASCAR Goes West and three poor finishes to show for it. For this race I will shoulder the blame. I had a bad day today. We had a top-10 race car most of the day and I didn’t drive the South Point Hotel and Casino Chevrolet the way it could have been run. We had a loose car and I kept getting into the fence. We will go to Texas Motor Speedway and hopefully re-group at a track that has been historically good for me.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 NAPA CHEVROLET SS – Hit the wall during final practice
YOU WERE HAVING A GOOD PRACTICE SESSION AT THE TOP OF THE SPEED CHART. WHAT HAPPENED?
“We had a part come loose on the left front and it’s obviously something that needs to be together to make laps. I’m not real sure why it broke or why that happened. It was nothing fancy that we were doing. I was getting into (Turn) 3 at the time. I don’t know if it was some sort of roughness to the race track that bounced it loose, or what. I was really happy with the NAPA Chevy throughout that run. Unfortunately, this now puts us behind. But we’ll look into it and try to get this car fixed for tomorrow. We would love to keep this primary car. I don’t know if we can or not. I know they’ll work hard and try to get it tuned-up for tomorrow.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Fontana–Practice

Blaney To Start 19th In Auto Club 400

Blaney To Start 19th In Auto Club 400

March 25, 2017

Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team were among a number of their peers at Auto Club Speedway on Friday that had to hustle to get out of the NASCAR inspection line in time to qualify for Sunday’s Auto Club 400. In fact, five drivers never got on the track during qualifying.

Blaney did, with a few minutes to spare, and posted the 21st-fastest time in the first of three qualifying rounds. His speed of 183.950 miles per hour was fast enough to propel him to the second round. There, he was 19th fastest, at 183.641mph, but that wasn’t fast enough to advance to the final round, so Blaney will line up 19th on Sunday.

He said in his post-qualifying comments that the scramble to get through inspection didn’t hamper him once he got on the track.

“No. I just think we missed it,” he said. “We were a little too free in practice, and we probably over-adjusted a little bit and got on the tight side.

“It’s something to learn from for the next time we come here.”

Blaney felt better about his speed in Friday’s opening practice session, where the No. 21 Motorcraft /Quick Lane Fusion was atop the speed charts for a time before ending the session seventh fastest with a best lap of 187.471 mph. He and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team spent much of that practice round preparing for race conditions.

“I think in race trim we’re going in a good direction, so we’ll see how that goes,” he said.

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – POLE WINNER
YOU CHANGED UP YOUR LINE THERE WAS THAT WHAT IT TOOK TO GET THE POLE?
“I think so. I haven’t seen a lap tracker, but I felt like I messed up there in (Turns) 1 and 2 and I got a little bit loose off the wall on entry and it got me to split the seam in (Turns) 1 and 2, but I was able to get committed to wide-open pretty good off of (Turn) 2 and then, yeah, I hadn’t run up high in (Turns) 3 and 4 at all in practice or qualifying here. Didn’t really know what I would have when I got there, but ran a good ways and it stuck. Really happy though, our Target team has been amazing to start the season and to get a pole is great. I haven’t gotten a pole since my rookie season. Yeah, this is awesome. I can’t say enough about everybody at our race shop for all the hard work they have been putting in. Got a little team dinner tonight, so this will be a good way to celebrate.”

SECOND CAREER POLE AND FIRST AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY BRING US THROUGH YOUR THREE SEGMENTS HERE THIS AFTERNOON:
“It was an interesting qualifying for us. I ran the bottom in (Turns) 3 and 4… well all day really, and then there the first two round. I knew everybody was running the top in 3 and 4 and my plan was to go up there in the second round, but thought I maybe got through (Turns) 1 and 2 okay enough to run the bottom, but I still lost time there. I knew the third-round I was going to have to move up, but our Target Chevy was really good, really balanced up there. I was surprised. I wasn’t really sure what I would have because on our up to speed laps up there I was a little bit tight taking off and then I would be kind of loose off, so I was expecting to have that, but it stuck really well and yeah, I saw the lap pop up on my dash and I was pretty pumped. Can’t say enough about everybody on our Target team. They did an amazing job all day.”

WHAT DO YOU WORK ON TOMORROW?
“I don’t know. We made about a 10-lap run today and the track was so green it was hard to get a good feel for what we really had. I thought our Target Chevy had good speed. It didn’t handle great today in race trim, but we had good speed. That is always a positive and they know what to adjust now. I think from that run and hopefully we can fine tune it some tomorrow and be good for Sunday.”

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 CATERPILLAR CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 5th
ON HIS LAP:
“Just good to get the best lap we had on the last lap. I finally got (Turns) 1 and 2 right in the Caterpillar Chevrolet. Had a little traffic down on the apron of (Turns) 3 and 4, but it wasn’t his fault, so just a good starting spot better than we practiced all day and we will put it in race trim.”

JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 8th
ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT
“Qualifying has been really good. Both of our cars were fast again. I thought my lap was better than it was. Sometimes you run laps and they don’t feel good and they are. And sometimes they feel really good and they’re not. And that was the second one of those. But overall it was really good. We had a really good practice day. We were good in race trim and just ready to go tomorrow. I think the line is going to be a little bit different than what traditionally we’ve had here. It seems like the line has been at the top of (Turns) 1 and 2 and the bottom of (Turns) 3 and 4 in the race. In qualifying it at the top of both ends. And I think the race is going to be the same way. So, that’ll be something to work on tomorrow to make sure you can get your car good on the top of (Turns) 3 and 4, which is kind of unique.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 24 NAPA CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 13th
WHERE DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MISSED IT A LITTLE BIT?
“I think (Turns) 3 and 4 that round we were pretty off in the first one and then I thought we helped our car to go faster in that second one, still not close to the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) or the No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) unfortunately, but I feel like I got through (Turns) 1 and 2 way better that second time than I did the first time and just didn’t roll the top in (Turns) 3 and 4 like I needed to. Yeah, obviously needed just a little bit to get into the top 12, obviously not close to get further up the board, but we will go to work tomorrow.”

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THIS CAR AND WHAT IT CAN DO ON SUNDAY?
“Well you are never happy, but I think tomorrow will be the day we find out on that. We just did qualifying runs today and unfortunately it didn’t work out very good for us, but we just focused on that this afternoon. With the way, this place is on tires it’s really hard to do race runs on Friday and still have any tires left for Saturday, so we saved them for tomorrow and we will go to work on it for the race.”

WHAT SPECIFICALLY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN RACE TRIM? SHORT RUN OR LONG RUN SPEED, WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT?
“Well, this race typically comes down to a short run at the end always, but I think you are going to have to be balanced across the board as always. I think you are going to have to be able to go, but at the same time we do see some long runs here and you are probably going to see that on Sunday and I think it’s going to be important to be good as you go as well. So, just try to have a little bit of everything as always.”

DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 18th
EIGHTEENTH IN PRACTICE, 18TH IN QUALIFYING HOW DO YOU THINK THE CAR WILL BE FOR THE RACE ON SUNDAY?
“Well, we would have liked to have went back out and tried to have run a little faster, but you can’t afford to put any laps on your tires because you have to start on these tires in the race. That just put us in a big hole starting out. I think the car is better than 18th and we will work on it tomorrow and see what we have got in race trim.”

CHRIS BUESCHER, NO. 37 BUSH’S BEANS CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 20th
WHERE WERE, YOU MISSING IT IN QUALIFYING TODAY?
“Just happy to be able to make that round with our Busch’s Baked Beans Chevrolet. Feel like were a little bit tight, kind of where we ended practice and a little tight for qualifying. Tried to free it up a little bit in between our two runs and might could have gone a little bit more, but we have a direction for practice now and will work on it hard tomorrow.”

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING YOU NEED TO WORK ON FOR THE RACE ON SUNDAY?
“I think here the tires fall off so quickly it gets so slick. We have a lot of choices here. One of my favorite large tracks that we go to and it always makes for an exciting race. We need to try and make sure we are not burning the tires off of it and make sure we have something that we can survive into a long run with.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, NO. 95 LFR WOODIE CHEVROLET SS – Qualified 25th
JUST SHY OF MAKING THE SECOND ROUND WHAT MORE DID YOU NEED OUT THERE WHAT WAS THE CAR MISSING?
“That first run I ran the top in (Turns) 3 and 4 and probably should have ran the bottom, but that second run ran the bottom and picked up a little bit of speed. Just all-in-all fighting to work through the bumps. That is kind of about where we were practice speed wise, so we made some good changes, maybe picked up a couple of spots, but this is a couple of weeks in a row that we have been right on the edge of making it or missing it going to Round 2. We will keep plugging away and try to get that last little bit.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS – On team’s decision not to participate in Qualifying today for Sunday’s race:

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HAVING TO START IN THE BACK ON SUNDAY?
“We had a tough practice session and mid-pack was probably going to be our goal anyway. So, to take our lumps here, at a track that’s really wide with a lot of lanes, a long race; we’ll just take our lumps and get the car right where we can take advantage of the precious minutes that we have in Saturday’s practice session and go from there. Pit road is going to be a problem. We’re not going to have a great pick there. We’re definitely not in a position we want to be in, so we’d rather take the time now and make sure we get everything right and get this car right; and also kind of control our risk factor. If I was to tear this car up again in qualifying, we’d be heading next door to the No. 88 (Dale Earnhardt Jr., for example) to pull out their back up car. Put a wrap on it. Change the seat and interior and a lot of other things. So, we just felt like it would be best to get everything right and just get prepared for tomorrow and start at the tail end. I think my record shows that I can make up plenty of spots and pass plenty of cars and we’ll just make it exciting coming from the back.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Fontana–Jimmie Johnson

TALK ABOUT THE STRONG START TO 2017 AND COMING HOME TO CALIFORNIA FOR THIS WEEKEND’S RACE:
“Yeah, it’s definitely been a good start to the year. We have had a shot to win every race this season. I’ve been really happy about that. California Speedway, I’m from California so it’s kind of like my home race. It’s a long way from Sacramento, but still feels somewhat like home getting to see lots of friends and stuff out here. It would be nice to get a win here and end the second-place streak I have going, but yeah, no it’s been really cool to be contending like we have been. Hopefully, we can continue to have speed in our race cars. I’ve been really happy with everybody at our Target Chip Ganassi Racing shop, Credit One Bank, everybody that puts all their time and effort into letting Jamie (McMurray) and myself have some fun and go fast and challenge for wins. Been extremely happy and would like to be winning right now, but being the point leader is awesome.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Fontana–Kyle Larson

Due to the incident in the first practice session, the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet SS team will not participate in qualifying today.

CHAD KNAUS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS:
“Unfortunately, we crashed the Lowe’s Chevrolet in practice today. We crashed on our third run and had to pull out the backup car and didn’t get back out on the track. I just felt it was wiser to get the car prepared correctly rather than qualify poorly. I wasn’t comfortable putting Jimmie in a position where he would have to hustle a car that he hasn’t turned a lap in yet.

“We are all the way out here on the west coast, and brought two race cars. If we were to crash this car, we would have to pull a car from a teammate and it would be a very difficult obstacle to overcome. We want to be prepared to put the best racecar on the track for our driver, Lowe’s, Chevrolet and all of our sponsors. So, we are going to take the time to do that by working on it this afternoon.”

TALK ABOUT YOUR WEEK AFTER WINNING AT PHOENIX AND THEN COMING TO AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY
“We were obviously excited after the win on Sunday and then getting a chance to go to the shop on Monday after very little sleep to congratulate all the guys and girls that were a part of it; and just to see everybody. I don’t want to say it’s been a long time coming because I think when you say that you kind of expect it. But, it had been a while since I’d been to Victory Lane in an RCR for Richard for three years of a drought. So, it was something we were fighting very hard for and it was very rewarding. And, that’s probably the better way of saying it. I got to do some things around the farm and hangout with the kids and do some things like that like a normal person. Outside of that, just being at the shop on Monday was a lot of fun.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Fontana–Ryan Newman

ON MAKING HIS 600TH CAREER START:
“…I just wanted to drive. I wanted to race cars for a living. I wanted to do it well enough to be able to afford to make a living doing it. I didn’t have vision or assume that I was going to make all of the money and success that we have made, but all I really wanted to do was to do it long enough so I didn’t have to get a real job. I mean that as sincere as I can. I’m real thrilled that I’ve had the opportunity to stay around and drive for some really great teams. Some really awesome owners. Worked with a lot of amazing crew chiefs and crew members. We have a really great group of guys that we race with in this current situation, we are having so much fun at the race track and really enjoy working with Greg (Ives, crew chief), so I feel fortunate and lucky and hope to have good success this weekend. I really like Fontana and I wish that we could have a good weekend is all. We have kind of been struggling a little bit to put together a good race this year and we qualified well last week, but didn’t run as well as we wanted to. We had a little issue with the brakes and stuff like that, but those things are going to happen. We will keep processing what we are learning and keep showing up every week and put it together eventually. I really, really like this race track. Obviously, you are running all over the race track, a lot of different grooves. That makes it a lot of fun as a driver. Looking forward to some fun this weekend and hopefully, a good result.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Fontana–Dale Earnhardt Jr.

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS ~ Crashed in the grass, Turn 4, during the first practice session and will go to a backup car.

WHAT HAPPENED OUT THERE?
“We just showed up at the track swinging hard and trying to get all that we can. I crossed the line there, for sure, and the car came around on me. But, we’ve got another great Lowe’s Chevrolet coming out. I thought we might be able to stick with this one, but that was too much on the front of the race car. It’s not the way we wanted to start the weekend. But, the only way we’re going to get better without testing is just to keep trying harder in practice and swing harder. We know we got the race-side in a respectable spot but just need to start better on Fridays.”

YOU WERE CLOSE TO KURT BUSCH AS YOU CAME AROUND THE CORNER AND YOU WERE SPINNING. WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND AND HOW DID YOU KEEP FROM COLLECTING HIM IN THAT PROCESS?
“I knew I was fine, but I’m sure it caught him off-guard seeing a car come by sideways. I was really concerned about sliding up in front of others and getting into the outside wall. I actually threw it into third and redirected the car lower on the track. I was kind of wishing I’d stayed with it and let it slide up and maybe I would have avoided the grass if I did so. I was just trying to manage it all.”

HOW HAVE YOU ENJOYED NASCAR GOES WEST?
“Yeah, it’s been fun. We’ve really enjoyed our time. I’ve always enjoyed this West Coast swing. I think it’s a great time of year to do this and get away fro the weather at home and get out here to this nice weather that we’ve seen the past three weeks. Hopefully that continues throughout the weekend. We spent a lot of time in Colorado between Phoenix and this weekend with Alan (Gustafson) and a couple of the guys. It was a fun week. I’m happy to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Fontana–Chase Elliott
