BRADENTON, FL (February 10, 2024) — Today at the inaugural SCAG Power Equipment PRO Superstar Shootout multi-time Top Fuel winner Josh Hart and the R+L Carriers narrowly missed racing into the final round in the Top Fuel versus Funny Car competition for the Don Schumacher Nitro Superstar Award. After four rounds of qualifying Josh Hart and the R+L Carriers team found themselves with a consistent Top Fuel dragster posting competitive times from 3.729 to 3.774 seconds.  Unfortunately, they were not able to crack the top eight to compete for the $250,000 top prize at the inaugural SCAG Power Equipment PRO Superstar Shootout.
 
“We really tested aggressively, and I have never made this many runs in a week before,” said Hart, the defending big money Pep Boys Top Fuel Allstar Callout winner. “Once the PRO Superstar Shootout started, we got down to business trying to get one of those eight spots. The level of competition was very tough, and we wound up 10^th. Ron Douglas and the team works their tails off and we were looking forward to putting on a good show for the fans today.”

Hart joined Brittany Force and both Steve and Billy Torrence as the Top Fuel competitors taking on Funny Car drivers Chad Green, Ron Capps, Dave Richards, Daniel Wilkerson, and Blake Alexander for the Don Schumacher Nitro Superstar Award and $10,000. The quickest Top Fuel dragster and quickest Funny Car would square off in the final round. Hart drew full-time Funny Car rookie Daniel Wilkerson as his exhibition run opponent. Both 11,000-horsepowered nitro machines launched together and Hart hazed the tires at the top end slowing to a 4.212 second run at 208.78 mph.
 
“It was cool to run beside a nitro Funny Car because the fans really don’t get to see that,” said Hart. “This whole event was a unique and positive experience for the teams, sponsors and the fans. I think this is the future of the sport with a festival style event. There were thousands of fans here with smiles on their faces all day and they saw some awesome competition.”
 
Chad Green and Steve Torrence posted the quickest runs of the session to square off for the trophy and prize money.

BRADENTON, FL (February 9, 2024) — After nearly a week of testing Pro Stock championship contender Camrie Caruso wrapped the three-day inaugural SCAG Power Equipment PRO Superstar Shootout today at Bradenton Motorsports Park. The third-year pro driving the Aqua Prop Chevrolet Camaro powered by Big Jeff Audio and True Brand made four quality runs of the two days of qualifying leading up to race day. Sixteen Pro Stock cars made the field and on Friday night a random chip draw matched first round opponents. For a first-time event the stands were packed and the competition was fierce.

 
“We knew it would be tough to make the field with all the top tier Pro Stock cars on the property,” said Caruso, a multi-time NHRA Pro Stock winner. “Our goal was to get into the show and then see how the chips fell. We got in and that gave us a chance for the big money. We drew Aaron Stanfield and he is a tough racer. I felt good going into the first round today.”
 
Stanfield along with Caruso is a rising star in the Pro Stock ranks and one of the stars that drew record setting crowds this weekend to Bradenton Motorsports Park. Both cars had a chance to turn on four win lights today and walk away with the $125,000 top prize. Stanfield got a jump off the starting line and never trailed in the race as Caruso made her slowest run of the week.
 
“The conditions threw everyone a curveball today with the warmest track temps we saw all week,” said Caruso. “The good news is we got a ton of good data and I have some great teammates at KB Titan Racing so I think we will be very strong in a couple weeks when the NHRA season starts at the Gatornationals.”
 
In addition to the on-track action Caruso and her marketing partners were very active with the thousands of fans in attendance. Big Jeff Audio brought their super-sized golf cart and gave away their signature Big Jeff Audio gold chains as well as goodie bags and frisbees to the fans. The atmosphere at the PRO Superstar Shootout was a combination of race and festival which Caruso felt was amazing for the fans and the sport.

“It was awesome to be able to do so many cool giveaways with Big Jeff Audio and our other sponsors,” said Caruso. “This event was great from start to finish. The competition was tough, but the fans had a great time. I loved signing so many autographs and getting to mingle with fans from across the country. I have never been in a race with this kind of energy. I can’t wait to get the season started.”
 
Caruso and the Aqua Prop Chevrolet Camaro powered by Big Jeff Audio and True Brand will be back in action March 8-10 at the NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway to start the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Feb. 10, 2024) – The racing season is beginning a couple of weeks earlier than expected for Dominic Scelzi, who has been selected to fill in for Roth Motorsports driver James McFadden during the High Limit Racing season-opening doubleheader next week.

The new national series kicks off the 2024 campaign on Monday and Tuesday at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Fla., and Scelzi will be behind the wheel of a Roth Motorsports No. 83 sprint car during the Battle at the Bay.

“I got the call to fill in for James so I’m excited to make my High Limit and East Bay debut,” Scelzi said. “Roth Motorsports has always been a big supporter of myself and our family team so I’m more than happy to step in.”

The two races at East Bay Raceway Park will mark Scelzi’s debut at the track as well as his first two starts with High Limit Racing.

“I’m excited to visit East Bay for the first time and get to race on the track before it’s gone,” he said. “Also, I’m planning to compete in some High Limit races in the Midwest this spring so this gets it started a little sooner.”

Scelzi recently announced plans to start the season by racing in select High Limit Racing and World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series shows in the Midwest throughout March and April.

“I’ve raced with Roth Motorsports many times throughout the years,” he said. “They have great equipment and a top-notch program so hopefully I can knock the offseason rust off quickly and we can be competitive each night. This will also be a great opportunity for me to get up to speed a bit before climbing into my family car next month. Thank you to Dennis and Teresa Roth and Todd and Brent Ventura as well as Toyota.”

Action happens so fast all over the track that a driver’s outlook can change in an instant. And that’s exactly what happened on Friday night to send Tyler Courtney to World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Victory Lane.Courtney chased after race-long leader Rico Abreu for nearly all 25 laps at Volusia Speedway Park. He’d come close to Abreu multiple times, but the chance at a win appeared gone as the checkered flag began to wave. But in the final corner Abreu tripped on the huge cushion, and Courtney capitalized on the bottom to roll right on by.The wild drag race to the finish brought the massive crowd to its feet as Courtney claimed night three of the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals. “Sunshine” himself stole one in the “Sunshine State.”The win moved Courtney’s total with The Greatest Show on Dirt to three. The entire trio have come on three of the country’s fastest half miles – Eldora Speedway, Port Royal Speedway, and now Volusia. The Indianapolis, IN native became the 21st different driver to top a World of Outlaws race at “The World’s Fastest Half Mile.” Friday was Courtney’s 15th Sprint Car appearance at Volusia. “I saw the double checkers, and I didn’t know if we’d already gone another lap or that was actually the end of the race,” Courtney said. “And I looked at the board and saw the #7 (BC) was number one. It’s just awesome man.”Bringing the field to green was 16-year-old Landon Crawley on the pole with Abreu to his outside. Crawley attempted to slide in front of Abreu in Turns 1 and 2, but the St. Helena, CA native ripped by the teenager on the top to take the early lead. Courtney, who started third, also slipped by Crawley on the opening lap to grab second.A caution and then a red flag for a huge pileup on the front straightaway interrupted the flow of action in the first half of the race.On a restart with 19 laps to go, another contender began to assert himself while Abreu and Courtney maintained the top spots up front. After starting 10th, Brad Sweet powered by both Giovanni Scelzi and Landon Crawley to rise into fourth with plenty of time remaining. Another yellow with 15 to go opened the door for Sweet to power ahead of David Gravel for the third spot.Disaster nearly struck Abreu with 10 laps remaining. After clearing two lapped cars, Abreu stumbled on the cushion in Turn 4 and got sideways, leaving Brenham Crouch nowhere to go. Crouch slammed into Abreu’s side and spun to bring out the yellow. Fortunately for Abreu, his car left the scene unharmed allowing him to maintain the lead.On the restart Abreu darted ahead of Courtney who found himself having to fend off Sweet. “The Big Cat” began to work the bottom and showed Courtney a nose, which wound up benefitting Courtney. He quickly adjusted the Clauson Marshall Racing/NOS Energy Drink #7BC to prevent Sweet from passing him and found speed on the low line in Turns 1 and 2.“I knew I was getting tight behind him (Abreu) in traffic on the top of (Turns) 3 and 4,” Courtney said. “Luckily Brad showed me the bottom, and so I moved down there. I knew I was making ground up in (Turns) 1 and 2, but in (Turns) 3 and 4 I just started going to the bottom to see if I could do something different. Honestly, I didn’t know how many laps were left, but I knew if I could get him to mess up or let him mess up somehow, running the bottom was going to be much safer.”Safer is exactly what the bottom turned out to be. Courtney closed in on Abreu’s tail tank in traffic as the white flag flew. Abreu opted to protect the bottom in Turns 1 and 2 which worked as he pulled ahead down the back straightaway. But in Turns 3 and 4 he returned to the cushion and went slightly above it leaving the lane for Courtney to steal the victory.“I didn’t know it was that exciting until I realized what we did there at the end,” Courtney said. “That was fun. It was non-stop the whole time. Even though we were just running around the top, it’s a lot harder than people think. That top was real treacherous. You get your right-rear (tire) just over it a little bit, it sucks you over.”For the second straight night Abreu was forced to settle for the runner-up spot. He admitted he could’ve driven a little more reserved in the final set of corners but also acknowledged you can’t ever let up in a Sprint Car race.“It’s just tough racing, just trying to process keeping your momentum up in traffic and hitting your marks,” Abreu said. “It’s the last lap, and you’re still racing hard. We’re Sprint Car Racing here, so we’re racing as hard as we can for 25 laps on a demanding and technical track. I felt pretty sporty on the cushion. I knew I was good off of (Turn) 2, but I never ran the bottom all race in (Turns) 3 and 4. I should’ve just drove a little bit more secure on the white flag lap, but you never know who is behind you and how close they are.”Rounding out the podium after his charge from 10th was Brad Sweet. The five-time World of Outlaws champion came away a little disappointed with himself after a small mistake cost him a chance to potentially be the one driving by Abreu coming to the finish line.“I’m a little disappointed in myself,” Sweet admitted. “I felt like I had kind of found the groove on the bottom of (Turns) 1 and 2 and put myself in a good position, but then got in the grease just a little bit and overdrove (Turn) 3 just a little bit and got out. And Tyler got back by me, but then once he knew where the line was he covered it really well and ultimately won the race.”Giovanni Scelzi and David Gravel completed the top five.Gravel’s effort allowed him to maintain his lead in the Big Gator standings. Courtney sits second eight points back. TAMPA, Fla. (February 9, 2024) – Jonathan Davenport became the seventh different winner in the first eleven Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events of 2024. The three-time series champion picked up his 74th career series win during the 48th Annual Wieland Winternationals – Presented by Lucas on Friday night at East Bay Raceway Park.    Hudson O’Neal, the defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion finished in second followed by Daulton Wilson, Garrett Alberson, and Ashton Winger completed the top five drivers.   Davenport jumped to the lead at the start of the 50-lap main event and led until he got too high in turn two, turning the lead over to Tyler Erb. Erb then led the next 16 circuits until Davenport was able to catch back up to Erb, retaking the lead for good on lap 28 despite being challenged by the ninth place starting O’Neal who briefly pulled even with Davenport at one point in the closing laps.    Davenport in Lucas Oil Victory for the first time this season led 34 of the 50 laps to claim the victory. “It’s a great car all my guys give me for sure. I thought I gave it away when I messed up in one and two. We made one little shock adjustment before the feature that made this thing a bear to handle. We know not to do that no more. I just kept trying to be patient when I lost the lead, I just tried to stay in his [Tyler Erb’s] tire tracks and just know that I was probably running a little wide on the throttle than he was just trying to save my tires. When I got back to him, I thought I had a good run and at the last second, I kind of slowed up. I don’t know if went over the cushion or not, because I figured he would go right back by me on the outside there. We rubbed a little bit.”   “This place is so tricky. The black is so black and then like there is a lot of grip in the brown and if you get too far in the brown like it’s slimy. I would get to high down there and wheel-spin too much. When I moved down to get more grip the car started to push.”   O’Neal, who was looking for his fourth series win of the young season came home in second. “I tried every inch of this racetrack trying to get by him [Davenport]. I thought it was a great race. We raced all over it. I started to keep pace a little bit there at the end and I thought I had some hope to run that bottom and just by the end of it we had a right rear tire so hot there from running around that top that it was hard to move around and get off the cushion. Man, what a race track East Bay gave us tonight and hopefully we can put on another great show tomorrow night for all the fans.”   Wilson rounded out the Big River Steel Podium for the third time this season. “We didn’t want to see a caution for sure. We needed ten more laps. We had a really good car tonight. We kind of went forward and then fell back. We put on a charge there towards the end. TAMPA, Fla. (February 9, 2024) – Jonathan Davenport became the seventh different winner in the first eleven Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events of 2024. The three-time series champion picked up his 74th career series win during the 48th Annual Wieland Winternationals – Presented by Lucas on Friday night at East Bay Raceway Park.  Hudson O’Neal, the defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion finished in second followed by Daulton Wilson, Garrett Alberson, and Ashton Winger completed the top five drivers. Davenport jumped to the lead at the start of the 50-lap main event and led until he got too high in turn two, turning the lead over to Tyler Erb. Erb then led the next 16 circuits until Davenport was able to catch back up to Erb, retaking the lead for good on lap 28 despite being challenged by the ninth place starting O’Neal who briefly pulled even with Davenport at one point in the closing laps.  Davenport in Lucas Oil Victory for the first time this season led 34 of the 50 laps to claim the victory. “It’s a great car all my guys give me for sure. I thought I gave it away when I messed up in one and two. We made one little shock adjustment before the feature that made this thing a bear to handle. We know not to do that no more. I just kept trying to be patient when I lost the lead, I just tried to stay in his [Tyler Erb’s] tire tracks and just know that I was probably running a little wide on the throttle than he was just trying to save my tires. When I got back to him, I thought I had a good run and at the last second, I kind of slowed up. I don’t know if went over the cushion or not, because I figured he would go right back by me on the outside there. We rubbed a little bit.” “This place is so tricky. The black is so black and then like there is a lot of grip in the brown and if you get too far in the brown like it’s slimy. I would get to high down there and wheel-spin too much. When I moved down to get more grip the car started to push.” O’Neal, who was looking for his fourth series win of the young season came home in second. “I tried every inch of this racetrack trying to get by him [Davenport]. I thought it was a great race. We raced all over it. I started to keep pace a little bit there at the end and I thought I had some hope to run that bottom and just by the end of it we had a right rear tire so hot there from running around that top that it was hard to move around and get off the cushion. Man, what a race track East Bay gave us tonight and hopefully we can put on another great show tomorrow night for all the fans.” Wilson rounded out the Big River Steel Podium for the third time this season. “We didn’t want to see a caution for sure. We needed ten more laps. We had a really good car tonight. We kind of went forward and then fell back. We put on a charge there towards the end. Bradenton, Fla. (Feb 9, 2024) – Austin Prock earned No. 1 qualifier in his Funny Car debut at the PRO Superstar Shootout at Bradenton Motorsports Park. The Cornwell Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS tuned by his father Jimmy, brother Thomas, and Nate Hildahl recorded a 3.851-second elapsed time during Thursday night’s qualifying session, which put Prock third in the 13-car field. Prock and team maintained his spot in the top three after second and third qualifying sessions as many cars did not improve during the heat of the day. The Cornwell Tools team saved their best for last and threw down a 3.825-second pass at 337.41 mph in the final qualifying session to earn the top spot and $10,000 bonus. Prock drew Alexis Dejoria, who qualified seventh with a 3.893-second elapsed time, in the chip draw to determine Saturday’s 8-car race day ladder. “My dad told me before we even rolled up there, we’re going for it because it’s the only way we’re going to absolutely get lane choice,” said Prock. “We were going for it and that put a little pressure on me because this was only my second night run. On my first I lifted early because I was losing track of the blocks down there, so I had to be perfect, and that was the best run I made all weekend. It was a hell of a package and just so proud of this Cornwell team, my dad brother Nate dog, and everyone that’s part of it.” John Force and his PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS team put down a stout run in the first qualifying session with a 3.849-second elapsed time at 332.59 mph which put them in second at the end of day one. The team did not see an improvement in day two across three qualifying sessions but finished in the number three spot. The chip draw resulted in a fan-favorite matchup with Force set to line up against Cruz Pedregon, who made it into the final qualifying position during the fourth qualifying session with a 3.903-second run.  After a 3.740-second pass in the first qualifying session, Brittany Force ended day one in seventh in the 12-car Top Fuel field. The team improved to a 3.736 elapsed time in Q3, however when Force pulled the Monster Energy dragster up to the team’s final qualifying try, they had been bumped out of the top eight. The David Grubnic and John Collins-led team were met with tire smoke early in the run and did not qualify for the Top Fuel race on Saturday.  Both Austin Prock and John Force will race for a purse of $250,000 on race day on Saturday while Brittany Force will participate in the Top Fuel vs. Funny Car shootout. She will compete for the Don Schumacher Nitro Superstar Award and $10,000 bonus. BARBERVILLE, FL (Feb. 8, 2024) – Of the six drivers that visited Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals Victory Lane Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park, three hoisted a gator trophy for the first time in their careers, cementing their name into the record books of one of Florida’s biggest motorsports events.

Dave Pinkerton, Greg Moore and Ryan Ayers clinched their first gators, while Jonathan Taylor, Dustin Sorensen and Ken Schrader added another to their collections in the six-pack of Features, lined-up according to event points.

Feature #1 – Dave Pinkerton

Ohio racer Dave Pinkerton kicked-off Thursday’s UMP Modified action, scoring his first career gator trophy in the first Feature.

Illinois veteran Rob Fuqua led the first two laps before Pinkerton gave him a challenge to the inside on Lap 3. Pinkerton dove to the bottom lane in Turn 3 and took the lead off Turn 4 as Fuqua bobbled on the cushion.

“I heard Fuqua on the last few restarts, and I knew I had to get up on the horse when I saw [Brian] Shaw was in third,” Pinkerton said.

Through multiple restarts, Pinkerton held strong and led the field back around to collect the checkers. In Victory Lane, Pinkerton proudly hoisted a gator trophy for the first time in his career.

“I’ll take a gator any way I can get it,” Pinkerton said. “I’ll tell my grandkids that this was DIRTcar Nationals.”

Feature #2 – Greg Moore

From 13th on the starting grid, Greg Moore completed his 15-lap charge to the front with an exciting, last-lap pass for the win.

Moore, of Defiance, PA, took advantage of some attrition in the opening laps, advancing into the top-five after a few incidents in front of him. He and Ryan Gierke battled for the second spot after the halfway point, but Moore was able to retain the position and mount a charge on then-leader Mark Anderson in the final laps.

At the white flag, Moore was only a few tenths behind Anderson. He got a great run off Turn 2, dove low into Turn 3 with speed and slid up in front of Anderson out of Turn 4 to take the lead and his first career gator trophy.

“I kept tracking [Anderson] down lap-by-lap, trying to run the cushion there; I kinda figured it was gonna be a last-lap deal,” Moore said. “I set it down in there underneath him, he left the door open, and thankfully it stuck.”

Feature #3 – Jonathan Taylor

For the third time in his career, Jonathan Taylor is a DIRTcar Nationals Feature winner.

The 34-year-old from Saltsburg, PA, had won twice on the points-ranked lineup night of DIRTcar Nationals before – traditionally held later in the week – and did it a third time Thursday night. He made the moves he needed to early, getting by polesitter Michael McGee with a run down low on Lap 3 and holding on through multiple restarts in the final laps to secure the win.

“We made a few changes throughout the week fighting some issues – not car-related, motor-related – and we finally got our feet under us,” Taylor said. “We were happy to get out front and stay there for the duration.”

Feature #4 – Dustin Sorensen

The biggest points-getters of the week filed in line for a 15-lap scramble to decide early DIRTcar Nationals supremacy. When the dust settled, Dustin Sorensen was the lone driver standing at the head of the field as winner of Thursday’s fourth Feature event.

“I felt really good in that Feature – the best I’ve felt all week,” Sorensen said. “I’m looking forward to qualifying tomorrow night and the big show on Saturday.”

The 23-year-old World of Outlaws CASE Late Model Series Rookie of the Year contender from Rochester, MN, started third on the grid and gave chase to Cole Czarneski’s brightly colored 21cz for the first 10 laps, finally getting around him on a late restart.

Meanwhile, out front, Will Krup continued to lead since the drop of the green. That was until Lap 11 when his right-rear tire blew, forcing him to bring out caution as the leader for the second-straight night.

Sorensen inherited the top spot for the race’s final restart and held off all challengers to secure his second gator in as many nights.

“I think we’ve got probably one of the top-10 cars here, but it’s so competitive,” Sorensen said. “I haven’t raced against these guys that much, but there’s so many good cars there. It’s kinda crazy, and it makes it a lot of fun.”

Feature #5 – Ken Schrader

Ken Schrader got his first gator since 2013 Tuesday night and followed that up with his fourth career DIRTcar Nationals win two nights later.

Similar to his path to Victory Lane on Tuesday, Ken Schrader jumped to the lead on Lap 1 and never looked back, leading all 15 laps and crossing the stripe by a margin of over four seconds on runner-up Shannon Fisk.

“They changed a lot of stuff on the car today just because what we’d been doing just wasn’t working,” Schrader said. “And I’m old, and I drive different.

“We’ve got 80 percent of what we need, we’ve just got to get some more.”

His third DIRTcar Nationals trophy waited 10 years to be presented to him, but #4 waited only 48 hours. Schrader had positive things to say about the new format that allows drivers more chances to win a DIRTcar Nationals Feature, which he took full advantage of throughout the week.

“The competition level just gets more intense every year with the number of cars we have and stuff,” Schrader said. “I hear some rumblings, some guys saying that the way they do it now where everybody’s running a Feature isn’t like the way it should be. But I think what [DIRTcar] has done, got so many people that come down here and support this thing and everybody getting to run a race, I think it’s fabulous.”

Feature #6 – Ryan Ayers

After a week on the struggle bus at Volusia, Ryan Ayers couldn’t help but crack a smile standing in Victory Lane Thursday night as winner of the final Feature of the night.

The Newton, NC-racer took advantage of a Lap 4 restart, shooting to the bottom in Turn 1 to get underneath leader Glenn Styres and take the top spot. From there, Ayers was smooth sailing out front, bringing the field back around to the checkers after multiple restarts to claim his first career DIRTcar Nationals gator trophy.

“It feels really good, coming from the week we’ve had,” Ayers said. “We’ve just struggled all week. Worked all day just to try and make the car go back to the basics. Nothing fancy, just plain-Jane stuff, and this thing’s really fast tonight.”

TAMPA, Fla. (February 8, 2024) – Brandon Sheppard became the fourth and final leader of an exciting 30-lap feature on Thursday night at East Bay Raceway Park. The New Berlin, Illinois native went to the Wieland Winternationals winner’s circle for the tenth time at the “Clay by the Bay.” The race was originally scheduled for Monday night but was postponed to three segments during the week after rain wiped out the Monday program. Sheppard battled with his fellow Illini state driver from lap 18 on until Sheppard was able to open some distance between himself and Brian Shirley. Shirley took second and Devin Moran rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. Tyler Erb was fourth and Ross Robinson rounded out the top five drivers. Former Dirt Track World Champion, Garrett Smith paced the first two laps of the race until Moran took over the point. Moran then held the top spot until Shirley got by him using the bottom groove by the halfway mark. Shirley would lead on two different occasions during the race as he finally relinquished the lead to Sheppard for good on lap 20. Sheppard went on to win by 1.491 seconds. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the 32nd time in his career, Sheppard became the sixth different winner this year and claimed his first victory of 2024. “Man, you just never know, the competition is so tough right now, all these guys do such a good job, and the racetrack is so much different each night. Hats off to everyone here at East Bay for giving us such a good racetrack again here tonight. When you have highs and lows like this it takes a lot of good people being together to be able to stick it through. Man, I hate it that I had to pass my old buddy, Shirley for the win. I know he’s needed a good run this week too. It feels really good.”  Sheppard who started ninth surged the lead for good on lap 20 after a back-and-forth battle between himself and Shirley. “Honestly after the first feature tonight I knew we had a really good car and things just didn’t fall my way. I think we started 11th and came all the way sixth. We raced with this car last night, but in the first feature we ran a different car and the guys wanted to run it in this feature, but I wanted to give this old girl a chance. It is one of our older cars from last year.” Shirley, who has never won a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event, nor a Georgia-Florida Speedweeks race came agonizingly close to ending those streaks. “That hole was there in one for the entire 40 laps in the first feature and 30 laps that race. I just hit it the wrong way with about five or six to go there. I tried my best to crowd him [Sheppard] to try and get by him. It just wasn’t good enough. That one stings, you only have two mores tries here this week. I would definitely like to put my name in the record books here.” Moran, who led multiple laps until the halfway mark yielded the lead to Shirley on lap 15 and fell to third behind both Shirley and Sheppard. “I felt really good when I could run the top down in three and four and bottom on the other end of the track. The car was really good underneath me and I kind of migrated to the bottom and I just couldn’t run the bottom like those guys. We’ve been making progress on it, and we just need to keep on working on it and we will see what we can do for tomorrow and Saturday. Gravel leads flag to flag for fifth World of Outlaws win at Volusia in last eight attemptsBARBERVILLE, FL (February 8 , 2024) – All through the off-season David Gravel made it clear he had one goal in mind for 2024 – a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car championship.Three consecutive runner-up finishes in the points have continued to build his hunger. He’s ready to make that step. And it took him only two races in the season to make an early statement that he intends for 2024 to be his year.Gravel led every lap of Thursday’s Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals Feature at Volusia Speedway Park. The Watertown, CT native started on the pole and drove a flawless 25 laps on his way to win number one of the year with The Greatest Show on Dirt.The victory marked the latest in a recent hot streak for Gravel at “The World’s Fastest Half Mile.” After going winless in his first 37 Volusia attempts with the Series, Gravel has now reeled off five triumphs in his last eight tries. The five wins are enough to equal him with Daryn Pittman and Steve Kinser for the third most at Volusia with the World of Outlaws. Gravel now owns 89 career Series victories, and his team – Tod Quiring’s Big Game Motorsports – is up to 95.It’s still extremely early in the season, but Gravel’s win moved him into the points lead by 16 markers. That also means he’s ahead in the Big Gator title hunt at the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals.“I felt like they did a pretty good job with the racetrack,” Gravel said. “I’ve just got to thank Cody (Jacobs), Zach (Patterson), Scott (Vogelsong), and Stephen (Hamm-Reilly) for working really hard. They’ve given me a great race car since we unloaded on Tuesday night. I’ve also got to thank Tod and his family.”Gravel’s biggest challenge of the night came right when the green flag flew. The 31-year-old led the way from the pole position with Giovanni Scelzi to his outside. On the opening lap Scelzi managed to muscle his way by Gravel on the top side. But the yellow flag flew right before the lap could be completed as Cory Eliason wound up stopped in Turn 3.The caution re-racked the field for a complete restart, and Gravel refused to allow Scelzi by on attempt number two. He darted ahead down the front straightaway and slid ahead of Scelzi’s KCP Racing #18 to break his momentum in Turns 1 and 2.“I was probably a little bit too nice for him going into (Turn) 1 and (Turn) 3,” Gravel said of the first start. “I just knew if I beat him on the start I was going to slide across and take away his momentum that time. Luckily I got a retry.”From there Gravel got to work building an early lead while behind him Rico Abreu arose to face off with Scelzi for second. On Lap 2 Abreu cleared Scelzi with a slider to settle into the second spot.As the early laps clicked away Gravel’s lead stayed steady around a second. Normally lapped traffic can cause problems for the leader, but once Gravel reached the tail of the field he actually began to grow his advantage even more as he expertly sliced through traffic. Slightly beyond the halfway point of the main event the distance between Gravel and Abreu ballooned over two seconds.Right when Gravel appeared headed towards a comfortable win, the yellow lights flashed when Kasey Kahne slowed with issues. The caution set up a seven-lap dash to the finish with Abreu – one of the sport’s current best – right on his tail. Gravel didn’t flinch on the restart. He powered the Huset’s Speedway/Billion Automotive #2 ahead of Abreu’s #24 machine right away. Abreu remained within striking distance for the first couple laps following the restart. But Gravel proved to be too strong as he stretched the lead over a second and claimed his first checkered flag of 2024.“I figured Rico probably had a good car late in the race,” Gravel explained. “Ricky (Warner) sets his cars up for the end of those races. I was just hoping I got a really good launch. I got a really good launch, and then I kind of opened the door for him where he could slide me going into (Turn) 1. But I felt like I got a good enough launch, and I wanted to get down that backstretch really, really strong. I wouldn’t open up another opportunity for him, so I risked it going into (Turn) 1 and I knew it would pay off after that.”Abreu held on to the runner-up spot which pushed his career podium total with the World of Outlaws to 46. After struggling on Wednesday night, Abreu felt encouraged to rebound with an impressive outing despite coming up short of victory.“He (Gravel) really got away from us and hit his marks,” Abreu said. “When you catch traffic the aero really affects these cars especially when they’re packed like that at the back of the field. It creates all of this turbulence that we have to manipulate as race car drivers to get a little clean air on our nose. I’m just happy with how we’ve performed throughout the week here from last night to tonight. That’s a big positive for our team.”Completing the top three after starting fifth was Justin Peck aboard the Buch Motorsports #13. It marked Peck’s fourth career podium with The Greatest Show on Dirt. Like Abreu, Peck was happy to bounce back after a sub-par Wednesday showing.“The thing was maneuverable,” Peck said. “I could run the top pretty good. I could run the bottom pretty good. When I was trying to throw sliders, I didn’t necessarily have to slide across the slick. I could kind of keep the left-rear (tire) planted and drive up across the track. Hats off to my guys. I didn’t feel like we were really good yesterday at all. The thing seemed to be pretty fast all night. TAMPA, Fla. (February 8, 2024) – Jimmy Owens went to the lead for good on lap 13 after a side-by-side battle with Garrett Smith. The four-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion picked up the $10,000 victory on Thursday night during the 48th Annual Wieland Winternationals – Presented by Lucas Oil at East Bay Raceway Park. For Owens it was his 81st career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win and his first at East Bay since 2013. Jonathan Davenport made a late-race charge to finish second, falling 0.314 seconds at the finish. Garrett Alberson rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. Ricky Thornton Jr. and Hudson O’Neal rounded out the top five. Owens and pole-sitter Garrett Smith had a good race for the lead in the first 12 laps until Owens was finally able to get away from the Georgia youngster. Davenport would move into second on lap 18 as he held that spot until Alberson passed him on lap 23. Alberson then was able to challenge Owens for the lead as he closed on him, but Owens kept him at bay. Davenport then mounted an electrifying run to the outside and appeared to be primed to take over the lead, but a caution with two laps to go forced a single-file restart as Owens would cross the line 0.314 seconds ahead of Davenport at the finish. In Lucas Oil Victory Lane for the first time since June of 2022, Owens became the fifth different winner this year in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. “I don’t even remember the last time I won a race at East Bay, I never did win one here in these conditions. The car has been flawless all night and you know it was good from qualifying to the heat race to the feature. Me and Garrett [Smith] had a heck of a race that was fun. It was a good night.” When reminded that it was 11 years ago for his last win at East Bay, Owens responded with “I can’t remember back that far. You know I have to thank Bobby Koehler for giving us good equipment. I want to give a shout out to everyone back home. It’s good to win a race. It’s very humbling to hear this crowd response tonight. It feels really good. I appreciate all of you guys and thank you all so much.” Davenport could not regain his momentum with a green-white-checkered finish falling just short at the end. “I never took it off the wood in those final laps. I had a really good car and I had saved enough tire to the very end. It just didn’t work out in our favor and that’s ok, we’ve got a good hot rod. We will continue to work on this thing. We have changed it every night just trying something different. I think we found something a little different for later. It’s obviously not as slick as what it was the first East Bay races we were here.” Alberson got right up to Owens, but lost ground to the Tennessee native as Davenport got around him late in the race. “I think we have turned the corner. We have really worked hard. Ken [Roberts] has put a lot into this program and my group has just never given up on me. We are really close. I just need to position myself better at the end. CONCORD, NC (Feb. 8, 2024) – NOS Energy has extended its partnership with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in a multi-year deal that will make it the Series’ longest running title sponsor.

BARBERVILLE, FL (Feb. 7, 2023) – Wednesday night DIRTcar UMP Modified Features at Volusia Speedway Park put three new faces and three returning drivers in Victory Lane, awarding them the signature gator trophy in the 53rd Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals.

Dustin Sorensen, Trevor Neville and Raymond Kable each scored their first career Volusia wins in Features 1-3, while Kenny Wallace, Charlie Mefford and Tyler Nicely revisited Victory Lane in Features 4-6.

Feature #1 – Dustin Sorensen

The first Feature of Wednesday night put a first-time winner in Victory Lane when Dustin Sorensen crossed the stripe.

The 23-year-old from Rochester, MN, took the lead on Lap 3 after Lap 1 leader Mitch Thomas and Lap 2 leader Will Krup each brought out cautions early. Sorensen was there to pick up the pieces, advancing into the lead for a Lap 3 restart and leading the rest of the way to bag his first career victory at Volusia.

“I thought for sure [Thomas and Krup] were gonna be tough, those guys have been fast all week,” Sorsensen said. “I was looking forward to racing with them really, and I didn’t really get the chance – they dropped out pretty early. I don’t really know where we stack up against them, but we’ll find out tomorrow.”

Feature #2 – Trevor Neville

Heading into Turn 1 on the final lap, Trevor Neville said he was prepared to settle for a respectable second-place finish to David Stremme. That was, until Stremme broke going through Turn 2.

Neville, 23, of Mackinaw, IL, had chased Stremme the entire race and entered the corner right on his heels. When one of Stremme’s brake calipers busted apart going through Turn 1, the car suddenly pushed up the track and out of the bottom lane, opening the door for Neville as they raced out of Turn 2.

Neville raced into the lead down the backstretch, brought it through Turns 3-4 and back to the checkered to clinch his first career gator trophy.

“This is a dream come true,” Neville said. “There’s two platforms that a guy should win on to become something or achieve something, and this is one of them. This is breathtaking, and to beat some of the guys we beat and compete where we are, I can’t thank enough people for it.”

Feature #3 – Raymond Kable

Maryland racer Raymond Kable had been a DIRTcar Nationals regular for the past several seasons but had never had any hardware to show for it, until Wednesday night.

Kable started third and turned on the jets in the second half of the race, getting by Shannon Fisk for second by Lap 10 and hunting down Monday night winner Brian Ruhlman five laps later to take the lead in traffic. From there, Kable was smooth sailing out front, winning Wednesday’s third Feature right before a notable face joined him in a Victory Lane celebration.

“It’s kind of unreal,” Kable said. “We just really struggled the first night – we were horrible – and then we picked it up last night, and tonight I’m sharing Victory Lane with Kenny Wallace. It was awesome.”

Feature #4 – Kenny Wallace

Since 2012, Kenny Wallace had gone winless at DIRTcar Nationals.

But as he crossed the finish line first Wednesday night and stepped into Victory Lane, emotion filled the 60-year-old as he hoisted his fifth career gator trophy and first in nearly 12 years.

“I almost started crying,” Wallace said. “You don’t know how bad you want something until you accomplish it. I’m just so excited and so happy.”

Wallace, of Arnold, MO, was stout all night long, setting quick time in his group before grabbing the lead on the opening lap of the Feature and never looking back, leading all 20 laps virtually unchallenged to score the win in a car fielded by seven-time Big Gator points champion, Nick Hoffman.

“The key to Nick giving me this car is our friendship,” Wallace said. “I’ve said this before – when I look at Nick, I see myself, because you couldn’t outwork me when I was his age. And that’s the same way he is; he just works so damn hard.”

Feature #5 – Charlie Mefford

“Chargin’ Charlie” has done it again, winning DIRTcar Nationals for the second night in-a-row at Volusia Speedway Park.

The 17-year-old from Belton, KY, started second and trailed Michael Leach through the first half of the race before reeling him in on Lap 10, shooting to the inside of Leach’s #09 in Turn 1 and sliding up in front of him through Turn 2 to take the lead.

From there, Mefford held strong on the multiple restarts he faced and led the field back around to the checkers to bag his third career gator trophy.

“This thing was pretty good tonight,” Mefford said. “It wasn’t as good as last night; we’ve gotta tweak on it before we go into the points day tomorrow.

“We’re just really good at Volusia.”

Feature #6 – Tyler Nicely

Tyler Nicely’s streak of perfection at DIRTcar Nationals this week lives on. He’s now three-for-three in pursuit of his first Big Gator points championship.

Nicely, 28, of Owensboro, KY, once again led all 20 laps en route to the checkered, unchallenged by Justin Allgaier and Ray Bollinger who completed the podium behind him. Despite his success, Nicely still is not satisfied with everything going on in his operation.

“I feel like we were still a little bit out there,” Nicely said. “The longer the run goes, I just keep getting tighter getting in and it’s just killing my speed.”

Now that he’s clinched his 10th gator Feature winner trophy – tied for third-most all-time with Austin Dillon – Nicely’s focus is the Big Gator points title and the Gator Championship Feature on Saturday.

“That’s my main focus this year – I really wanna win Saturday,” Nicely said. “Just trying to get the balance right on the racecar.”

The five-time champion holds off Tyler Courtney for seventh Series win at the half mileBARBERVILLE, FL (February 7, 2024) – Brad Sweet loves to go gator hunting at Volusia Speedway Park. The five-time and reigning World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car champion consistently contends for the win whenever visiting the Barberville, FL oval. And Wednesday night proved to be no different when The Greatest Show on Dirt unleashed its 47th season.Sweet led all 25 laps as the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals kicked off the World of Outlaws campaign to bank a $12,000 payday. “The Big Cat” started on the pole in the Kasey Kahne Racing #49 and held off a strong challenge from Tyler Courtney to make his 91st trip to Victory Lane with the Series.“It’s just a lot of fun to come here and start out so strong,” Sweet said. “We’ve had a lot of success here at Volusia over the years. It’s going to be a long week, so hopefully we can keep celebrating in Victory Lane.”The win marked Sweet’s 10th overall at Volusia and seventh with the World of Outlaws. That equals the track with Cedar Lake Speedway as the winningest on his résumé. Only Donny Schatz’s total of 14 Volusia victories with the World of Outlaws outranks the Grass Valley, CA native’s mark.Sweet brought the field to green in the NOS Energy Drink Feature with Tyler Courtney alongside after the two claimed the top two spots in the Toyota Racing Dash. The duo raced wheel-to-wheel through Turns 1 and 2, and Courtney managed to nose ahead down the back straightaway. Sweet quickly responded by powering right back by the Clauson Marshall Racing/NOS Energy Drink #7BC Turns 3 and 4. In the early portion of the race Sweet set a solid pace, but Courtney wouldn’t let him escape. One lap Sweet would be faster. Then Courtney would clock a quicker lap. The gap stayed below a second throughout the opening 10 laps and as they begin to navigate traffic.A yellow flag on Lap 12 for a slowing Sheldon Haudenschild appeared to give Sweet a break as it removed him from traffic and provided clean air. But on the restart Courtney flexed his muscle with a challenge for the top spot.Courtney got his momentum built up around the cushion while Sweet remained committed to the bottom. The margin shrank as the two worked opposite lines of the racetrack. On the 15th lap Courtney pulled alongside Sweet and looked poised to snag the lead. But a yellow flag spoiled those hopes when Michael “Buddy” Kofoid slowed to a stop on Lap 16.Having seen Courtney’s challenge, Sweet opted for the top when the green flag brought the field back to life. And Courtney wasn’t able to find the run he had before as Sweet moved around the racing surface.“I could hear him (Courtney) on my outside at the end of the back straightaway,” Sweet explained. “It’s just a lot of experience. Obviously, I’ve raced here a lot. I was making good speed. My car was really good on the bottom, but sometimes momentum just starts to build. I could hear him, and when that yellow came out I looked over at the screen and saw he was right there. So, then I opened my entry in (Turn) 1 and started using the banking to create momentum, and I think it just kind of took the air that he had.”Courtney began to fade as Sweet stretched the advantage north of a second on Lap 19. But hope was restored as traffic became a factor late. Sweet struggled to navigate a slower car and allowed Courtney to cut the margin to less than half a second with only two laps remaining. But it was too little, too late as Sweet held on to secure the first checkered flag of 2024.“My car was just phenomenal,” Sweet said. “We made it better all night. Eric (Prutzman, crew chief). It’s Tye’s (Wolfgang, car chief) birthday, so happy birthday to Tye. And we’ve got a new tire guy, Zane. Happy to get in Victory Lane for them. The ill-timed caution when challenging Sweet left Courtney a little disappointed, but he wasn’t sure that he would’ve gotten by Sweet even if the race remained green.“I think one more lap he was going to keep hearing me and probably move up and just take my air away like he did there after the caution,” Courtney said. “When you’re racing a guy like him that’s done this a lot and has a lot of success, it’s tough to pull one over on him. I’m just excited about our whole Clauson Marshall, NOS Energy Drink, Elliott’s Custom Trailers team. We came down here last year and were just barely making the shows.”Rounding out the first podium of the season was David Gravel aboard the Big Game Motorsports/Huset’s Speedway #2. The Watertown, CT driver admitted they may have gone slightly the wrong direction with the car ahead of the Feature with how track conditions played out. But even with that, Gravel came away encouraged with the top three run.“I just think that was the fastest and stickiest track we had nearly all night long,” Gravel said. “We didn’t think it was going to stay that wet, so we just got too tight when we got close to those guys. In open track our car was really, really good. But once we got close to Tyler or lapped traffic and restarts I just couldn’t get going that good. TAMPA, Fla. (February 7, 2024) – Tyler Erb earned a hard-fought victory on Wednesday night during the 48th Annual Wieland Winternationals – Presented by Lucas Oil at East Bay Raceway Park. Erb pulled away from a trio of cars who were battling for second to take a 2.653 second advantage at the finish line for his 21st career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series win. Mike Marlar, who started 23rd edged out Davenport at the finish line for second to earn the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of the Race. Davenport rounded out the Big River Steel Podium finishing third. Daulton Wilson and Dennis Erb Jr. completed the top five drivers. The action was fast and furious in the first 20 laps of the 40-lap main event as Davenport led the first 11 circuits until Erb rolled around him on the outside to take the lead on lap 12. Erb, Davenport, and Daulton Wilson were battling nearly 3-wide for the lead as Wilson took his only lead of the race on lap 20.  Davenport then came back to hold the point until Erb powered by him on lap 26. From there, Erb stormed away to pick up a convincing victory.  Erb in taking his fifth career East Bay victory fought back after a disappointing race on Tuesday night where he finished sixth after leading in the early part of the race. “I think just racing a little smarter today. I chased JD [Davenport] and was really patient and finally got by him. On the restart they obviously started running the top or something to get such a really good run. I just had to hunker down and fight back. I have got an awesome car and an awesome group of people helping me. I love East Bay it produces some of the greatest racing and it was a really good race.” “I can’t believe JD left the top open down there in one and two,” said the New Waverly, Texas driver who became the fourth different winner this year on the tour. “His [Davenport’s] car was really good. That was fun, that’s East Bay that’s how it’s supposed to be where you can run all over the place. Honestly the first 20 laps I never really spun my tires, so I knew I had a lot left in the tank. I just had to find the right place on the racetrack to use it.” Marlar had the drive of the night coming from the inside of the last row to nip Davenport at the line to finish in second. “We have just been struggling the whole trip. We kind of figured out we had a bent rear end in the car. I was kind of bad early in the night, but I got it going for the feature. I want to thank Greg Bruening for giving me this opportunity. I hope we put on a good show there. There at the end I got to rolling the top. They knew I was coming.” Davenport finished third for the second night in a row. “The lane moved several times there. My guys gave me the best car they could. Congratulations to Tyler [Erb] and Mikey [Marlar]. Reigning NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster national champion Julie Nataas will compete with Randy Meyer Racing for one more season in 2024, and two-time national event winner Hunter Green will return to join Nataas as the team’s pair of primary drivers for the 2024 season. Celebrating its 45th season of drag racing, Randy Meyer Racing will compete in 26 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events. Scott Dean will also compete on a limited schedule in pursuit of a regional title, and two-time national champion Megan Meyer and newcomer Deni Jensen will drive team cars in a few match race appearances. 

“We’re looking forward to another full season with Julie and Hunter as our primary drivers,” said Randy Meyer, team owner and tuner. “It was very fulfilling for all of us to power Julie to her first NHRA national championship and the team’s fourth in the last five years. Our goal is to help Julie and Hunter win more races and championships before they move on to the nitro ranks.”

Nataas, who’s entering her sixth and final season as a full-time driver for RMR, clinched the 2023 NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster national championship and the Central Region title. Driving the Oslo Tapet & Gulvbelegg (OTG) A/Fuel dragster, she won three national events and four regional races. “It’s a little extra exciting going into a season as a reigning world champion for the first time, but I’m prepared to work harder than last year to secure another world championship title for the team,” Nataas said. “I know there’s at least a couple new drivers this season and our competitors stepped it up big time last year, so I’m expecting nothing less for this year. We have OTG back on board for the season in addition to two new sponsors: Elliott’s Custom Trailers & Carts and Airmine.”

Last season, Green won his first NHRA national event at the Topeka race before joining his father, first-time Funny Car winner Chad Green, in the winner’s circle at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., to close out the year. He will drive the Bond-Coat A/Fuel dragster. 

“I’m excited to be entering my third season with Randy Meyer Racing in 2024,” said Green, who is also licensed in Top Fuel. “This will also be our biggest season together so far. We plan to do a full schedule of 15 races this year. I only competed in 10 last year, and with the win at the final race in Pomona we were able to break into the top 10 in points, so we plan on finishing the 2024 season even stronger.”

Dean, an experienced bracket racer, competed in three Top Alcohol Dragster events with RMR in 2023. He will step up to a seven-race schedule this season, alternating between the two RMR dragsters depending on which seat is available. 

“Excitement does not even begin to describe competing for a regional championship in Top Alcohol Dragster with Randy Meyer Racing for the 2024 season,” Dean said. “Having a final round appearance out of three races in 2023, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to burn even more nitromethane in 2024. It fires me up to continue learning every pass alongside the former, reigning, and defending, world championship Randy Meyer Racing family.”

Jensen, who made her NHRA regional competition debut with RMR in 2023, will compete in match races alongside Megan Meyer in the Gunk A/Fuel dragsters. The first scheduled match race will take place at Mo-Kan Dragway’s Memorial Day Weekend race. Additional match race events will be announced later this season.

BARBERVILLE, FL (Feb. 6, 2024) – DIRTcar UMP Modified competition continued Tuesday night at the 53rd Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals, putting six more drivers in Volusia Speedway Park Victory Lane – five who added to their growing gator trophy collection and one first-timer.

The lone first-time gator winner was Tom Berry Jr, who made the trip out from his home in Des Moines, IA, for his DIRTcar Nationals debut in a car from out of the Lethal Chassis stable, built by UMP Modified veteran David Stremme. He joined Kyle Strickler, Charlie Mefford, Tyler Nicely, Ken Schrader and Lucas Lee as victors of their 20-lap main events and gained the most valuable 80 points toward the event points standings.

Feature #1 – Kyle Strickler

He was bested Monday night, but Tuesday night was Kyle Strickler’s turn to visit Victory Lane as winner of the opening Feature.

Though he led the final 14 laps of the race, the 39-year-old Modified veteran from Mooresville, NC, did not have the greatest start. Polesitter Dustin Sorensen pushed way up the track through Turns 1-2 on the opening lap, sending Strickler over the cushion and back to third.

“I got such a good run down the front-stretch and through (Turns) 1 and 2, and he kinda hung in the slick a little bit,” Strickler said. “I was up alongside of him and he didn’t know I was out there and he was trying to the grip. It was nothing dirty on his part, but it about was… really big.”

However, Strickler was able to rebound to second before the race’s first caution on Lap 6. On the ensuing restart, Sorensen faulted on the top once again, jumping over the Turns 1-2 cushion and allowing Strickler to go by for the lead to his inside.

“I don’t know if he was trying to protect, or he didn’t know where I was at, but he drove in and kinda got tight and it opened up the door for me to be able to drive down in there and be able to slide him back,” Strickler said. “Once I got out in clean air, I thought we were alright.”

From there, Strickler was able to keep Sorensen and the field in the rearview, leading the remaining 15 laps en route to his 13th career gator trophy.

Feature #2 – Tom Berry Jr.

His Lethal Chassis teammate David Stremme won the battle on track Monday night, but Tuesday night was Tom Berry Jr’s turn to win a gator.

Berry, of Des Moines, IA, linked up with the Lethal Chassis owner/builder to take on his first DIRTcar Nationals this week and has already secured a piece of hardware. The two raced closely for several laps Monday and did it again Tuesday, swapping the lead back-and-forth multiple times before Berry was able to pull away in the end.

“I told him after last night, I had to give it to him,” Berry Jr. said. “I’m glad he got the win, I’ve got the win now, and I guess the pressure’s off both of our backs.”

After race-long leader Mitch Thomas spun out 12 laps in, Stremme inherited the lead and some pressure from Berry on the restart. Berry soon saw an opportunity to make a move and took it, throwing a slide-job in Turn 1 and making it stick out of Turn 2.

“The top was so fast; you could get to a guy but it was hard to get by him,” Berry said. “That restart – I knew if I got a good restart, I’d dive bomb him. I thought I was gonna keep it in front of him, but he crossed me over again and we raced it out, nobody touched, it was just an awesome night.”

While Stremme battled back with tenacity, he was unable to make up the ground in the end as Berry cruised to a first DIRTcar Nationals win.

Feature #3 – Charlie Mefford

One year ago at DIRTcar Nationals, Charlie Mefford scored one of the biggest wins of his career and has come back to Volusia again this year for more gator gold.

The 17-year-old Kentuckian scored that second golden gator from the pole of Feature #3 after setting quick time in his Qualifying group. He took off at the drop of the green and never looked back, leading all 20 laps on the path to his second career gator trophy.

“It feels awesome, especially coming down here and going back-to-back,” Mefford said. “Everybody thought it was a fluke; heck I thought it was a fluke last year.”

Mefford’s got some close crew members helping him throughout the week who he always takes time to thank.

“It’s pretty special – every win is,” Mefford said. “Just me, mom and dad, that’s pretty much all we got. To come out here and be as competitive as this, it really means a lot to us.”

Feature #4 – Tyler Nicely

In what was the most dominant display seen all night with the UMP Modifieds, Tyler Nicely put on a clinic in Feature #4 and showed all 108 other drivers exactly how fast his new Elite Chassis is, crossing the stripe over six seconds ahead of the field.

The 28-year-old Kentuckian led all 20 laps after setting quick time in his Qualifying group and claiming the pole position. He took off at the drop of the green and never looked back en route to collecting his eighth career gator trophy.

“It felt really good; last night I felt like our balance was a little bit off,” Nicely said. “Me and Nick [Hoffman] and Ryan at Jerovitz Shocks, we just kinda put our heads together just trying to get me more comfortable.”

As fast as his car is, Nicely knows he’ll be one to contend for this week as he shoots for his first-ever Big Gator trophy.

“That was our main goal this year,” Nicely said. “I want to be able to try and win the Big Gator on Saturday and the points. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. We’ve always been close, just haven’t been able to get it done.”

Feature #5 – Ken Schrader

For the first time in over 10 years, Ken Schrader is back in Volusia Speedway Park Victory Lane.

The two-time DIRTcar Nationals champion of the UMP Modified division – whose last event win came in 2013 – led Feature #5 flag-to-flag from the pole, running an unwavering line around the bottom of the half-mile and holding off his competition to bank his third career DIRTcar Nationals Feature win.

“We’ve struggled here, especially the last three or four years,” Schrader said. “It’s been ugly, but we got this thing going a little better in the middle of last season and we’re happy with it tonight.

“We know why we were struggling, because we just weren’t getting our job done. Yeah, [winning] made it a lot better.”

Though he was never seriously challenged for the lead, Schrader did have a few big Modified veterans behind him in Will Krup, Ray Bollinger and Zeke McKenzie, who would have pounced on the opportunity to steal the lead had Schrader gave them the chance.

“I felt pressure, but the pressure was just to not screw myself up,” Schrader said. “It was gonna be hard for somebody to get around if I didn’t screw up. But it’s easy for me to screw up, so that’s all we had to worry about.”

Feature #6 – Lucas Lee

The UMP Modified Florida Speedweeks points leader is back in Victory Lane at Volusia.

Lucas Lee bagged his second career gator trophy last year and got his third Tuesday night after inheriting the lead from Mike McKinney just past the halfway point.

McKinney, who had led since the drop of the green, had an untimely water pump expiration on Lap 11 and came to a slow stop to bring out the yellow and be pushed back to the pits. That handed the lead over to Lee, who took it and ran with it all the way back to the checkered.

“Nick’s (Hoffman) really fine-tuned these cars to where they’re so good here,” Lee said of his Elite Chassis. “They’re so good here; he’s made it pretty simple for us.”

Brent Marks leads the way in Tuesday practice sessions at VolusiaBARBERVILLE, FL (February 6, 2024) – Racing doesn’t start until Wednesday, but the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars hit the track Tuesday night for Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals practice.Nearly 40 cars unloaded in the Volusia Speedway Park pit area to get their rides dialed in for the start of 2024. Three practice sessions set the stage for who to potentially expect to compete for the Big Gator championship.SESSION ONEBrent Marks opened the practice night by topping the charts in the first session. The Myerstown, PA native ripped a 13.752 around “The World’s Fastest Half Mile.” Californians claimed three of the remaining top five spots with Rico Abreu (13.921) going second quickest, Buddy Kofoid (13.961) third, and Cory Eliason (14.007) fifth. TAMPA, Fla. (February 6, 2024) – Hudson O’Neal won the opening round of the 48th Annual Wieland Winternationals – Presented by Lucas Oil on Tuesday night at East Bay Raceway Park.  O’Neal picked up right where he left off, ending last year’s Winternationals at East Bay winning the Thursday and Friday night programs as Saturday’s finale was rained out. O’Neal battled with Tyler Erb for the first 10 laps of the race until taking the lead for good on lap 11. Daulton Wilson tracked down O’Neal on occasion, but never got the opportunity to pass O’Neal as O’Neal raced through traffic towards the end of the race to score his 27th career win on the tour. Wilson finished second followed by Jonathan Davenport, Ashton Winger, and the Todd Steel Buildings Hard Charger of Race, Devin Moran who came from the 18th starting spot to round out the top five drivers. O’Neal went to Lucas Oil Victory for the fifth time ever at East Bay and for the third time this year with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. “It looked like they shoved those tires in three and four a little bit. I knew that if I could just stay patient enough eventually that top was going to go away. Tyler [Erb] went down there in front of me one time and it came down to a crucial pass coming off of two he just missed the bottom a little bit and let me sneak in. We rubbed some doors, but I knew that was probably going to be the only chance I had to get back by him. We had a little different tire on I feel like that the rest of the field, but it ended up working out.” Wilson finished second for the ninth time in his career in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series competition. “The racetrack was pretty bottom dominant and starting sixth I knew we had to get to the front quickly. It was a great night for us, we had good speed and moved moved forward tonight. We brought home everything in one piece. Since we went to this new car it’s really easy to drive. I feel like I can go wherever I want to. Hats off to my guys for building a great race car.” Davenport who came into the final Winternationals at East Bay with eight career wins at the “Clay by the Bay” rounded out the Big River Steel Podium in third. “I would have bet this thing would had rubbered in no time and it never did for sure. I don’t know why it didn’t. We went a little harder on tire. I lost my grandpa today. He was probably one of the pioneers of the sport that nobody knows about. He probably owned a car for 40 or 50 years. We hate that we lost him but he lived a great life, he was 94 years old.
