INDIANAPOLIS MEDIA DAY
DRIVER PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
FEBRUARY 2, 2016

THE MODERATOR: A very special livery unveiling. We’d like to introduce you to the president of Chip Ganassi Racing, Steve Lauletta, and our reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion, Scott Dixon.

Gentlemen, we’ll have you start on each end and do the unveiling.

Steve, obviously this gives you goosebumps to see this, and the importance of Target with Chip Ganassi Racing. Speak of this great relationship you and Target have.

STEVE LAULETTA: It’s certainly been a strong suit of our team for a really long time, and with Chip. To be able to bring back the lightning bolt and the wins around the late ’90s. When we took the idea to Target, said there’s a lot of history talked about, there’s a lot of history with this guy sitting next to me yet to be made, but he’s already made some, they jumped onboard with bringing this back for the entire season. Happy to get it started today. Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Media Day–Chip Ganassi Racing Unveiling →

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET INDYCAR

THE MODERATOR: We’ll go ahead and continue with our Verizon IndyCar Series media availability. Pleased to be joined by Simon Pagenaud.

You’re entering the second year with the team. What are things you learned from the first year that you’re looking forward to continuing the second year?

SIMON PAGENAUD: It’s great to have the winter to get to work on the little details. This year was a lot of work, for sure. Between two teams assembled in a very nice way, we have some really, really good people on my car. Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Media Day–SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 TEAM PENSKE →

Chevy Racing–INDYCAR–Media Day–ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 ED CARPENTER RACING

ED CARPENTER, NO. 20 ED CARPENTER RACING CHEVROLET INDYCAR:

THE MODERATOR: We’re joined by team owner/driver Ed Carpenter.

You had some team changes earlier in the week. What will look different for 2016?

ED CARPENTER: Yeah, seems like big changes, but organizationally not huge internally. We had operated as Ed Carpenter Racing from 2012 through 2014, merged with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing to form CFH Racing. Then as we got into the off-season, towards the end of it, all sorts of things we don’t need to get into related to different things, partnership changes, structure changes that really precipitated us to going back to Ed Carpenter Racing when everything shook out. THE MODERATOR: We’re set to relive the 99th running of the Indianapolis 500. We’ll start with Will Power and Juan Montoya.
Gentlemen, welcome. Hopefully Media Day has treated you well, the off-season has treated you well. You have been all over the world. You have been very, very busy.
Let’s talk about that 99th running. Will, for you, it wasn’t exactly how you wanted things to finish. Going back and watching the last 10 laps of that race, it almost seemed like you were exactly where you wanted to be. You held everybody at bay until Juan got you in the end. What’s going through your mind in the last 10 laps?
WILL POWER: I mean, the last 10 laps, I could see Dixon was struggling. He wasn’t able to tow up, which was a good thing. He was holding everybody else off, which was a good thing. Then Juan just dropped and passed me straightaway. Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR Media Day–JUAN PABLO MONTOYA, NO. 2 TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET INDYCAR AND WILL POWER, NO. 12 TEAM PENSKE →

What is it like to be in demand as far as the race fans go expecting comedy from you all the time? Continue reading Chevy Racing–INDYCAR Media Day–JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 21 ED CARPENTER RACING →

Honda Renews Commitment to INDYCAR

Honda Renews Commitment to INDYCAR
• Two-year agreement through 2017
• Honda open-wheel racing program began in 1993
• Record includes six manufacturers’ championships, 10 Indy 500 wins

TORRANCE, California (February 2, 2016) – Honda today announced that the company has renewed its commitment to INDYCAR, signing a new multi-year agreement to continue participation as a manufacturer in the Verizon IndyCar Series through 2017, with an option to extend the agreement through the 2020 season.
American Honda and its racing subsidiary, Honda Performance Development, have been a part of open-wheel racing in North America since the founding of HPD in 1993. The company entered Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) competition at the start of the 1994 season.
In nine years of CART competition, Honda scored 65 victories from 164 races, winning four manufacturers’ championships and six consecutive drivers’ titles from 1996-2001.
Honda joined the IndyCar Series at the start of the 2003 season, became single supplier of racing engines to the series from 2006-2011, and welcomed the return of multi-manufacturer competition in 2012. Honda has scored an additional 152 victories in INDYCAR, 54 of those wins in multi-manufacturer competition. In addition, the company has two Manufacturers’ Championships and scored 10 Indianapolis 500 victories from 2004-2015.
“In the 13 years that Honda has been a part of the INDYCAR, we’ve had a great deal of success, both against strong competition from other auto manufacturers and as single engine supplier,” said Art St. Cyr, president of HPD. “Honda is pleased to be part of the IndyCar Series, as it provides a technical challenge for our associates, a showcase for Honda products worldwide and incredible entertainment for racing fans.” Continue reading Honda Renews Commitment to INDYCAR →

CORVETTE DRIVER IN-RACE UPDATES
JAN. 30-31, 2016

MAX ANGELELLI, WAYNE TAYLOR RACING NO. 10 KONICA MINOLTA CORVETTE DP: “The car was very good but I fought all the time because the cars in front of me were slower than I was and I was trying to find a way to overtake them. So it was tough, but I am pleased with the team and pleased with the car. The car is really, really strong and I am looking forward to the race. When you have a car like this, you really enjoy driving it.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R: “Pretty routine start of a 24-hour race. People are finding their way and causing some trouble but all-in-all it was pretty clean in the first triple-stint there. I’m pretty happy with how the Corvette is driving right now and we are quick in our class which is obviously nice, but there is still a long way to go. That is just part one of writing a good story so to speak. So yeah, I am really happy and now we get Marcel in for his laps and get him comfortable and settled in, and then we can kind of push on from there.”

IF YOU COULD NAME ONE THING THAT YOU COULD USE A LITTLE MORE OF WHEN YOU GET BACK IN, WHAT WOULD THAT BE? “There is still some work to be done on the setup of the car a little bit. The car is not perfect by any means, but where it is good is in all the right spots. It’s a bit of a handful in the high-speed stuff and we have set ourselves up to make some passes in a straight line. It seems like that is working well, but some of the stuff in the infield isn’t quite where I would want it to be but it’s still good enough for right now. So, it’s a long race and we can still make some adjustments as the race goes on and really try and dial in the car so that we have a chance to push hard at the end.”

ANTONIO GARCIA, CORVETTE RACING NO. 3 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R: “Everything ran according to plan. When Jan came in, I could see that the car was very good. He did a really fast last stint before I got in, so I felt really confident. The Corvette behaved just as I wanted. Whenever we are able to lead the race right now, we will take it. But there is still a big risk factor out there. We want to be fast but more important is saving the car as much as possible.”

CHRISTIAN FITTIPALDI, ACTION EXPRESS RACING NO. 5 MUSTANG SAMPLING CORVETTE DP: “That was a pretty solid stint. The car is good. We have some understeer but we’re not losing time on that. We’re losing the majority of our time on power-down. Overall, I’m pretty happy. We’re in the hunt and we have a lot of racing ahead of us.”

MARCEL FÄSSLER, CORVETTE RACING NO. 4 CHEVROLET CORVETTE C7.R: “It’s really close and a ton of work, actually. But it’s also great fun because we had great battles in our class against BMW, the Porsches, the Ferraris and even the other Corvette. The restarts were quite tricky because we were not on old tires all of the time. In the middle of the field and going into the first corner, you didn’t know where to brake, what was going to happen in traffic and which hole to dive in going to the corner. It was quite tricky in the beginning but then everything sorted out quite well. There is also a lot of respect from the slower cars and the faster prototypes. We try to give each other plenty of space. I enjoyed these first couple of stints very much. Everything looks good for Corvette Racing so far. There’s still a long time to go though.”
