Scelzi Grateful for Strong Safety Products following Wild Crash at Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 4, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi endured one of the wildest rides of his career last Friday at Knoxville Raceway.

Scelzi was competing just outside the top 10 when he and another driver made contact in turns one and two at the half-mile oval. The collision resulted in both cars flipping and Scelzi’s car being destroyed during the crash.

“It was the second most painful one I’ve been in,” he said. “It was probably the biggest flip I’ve taken. It was a wild one. To kill a car at Knoxville, it was pretty stylish. I really want to thank all of our partners for the safety products. They all did the job perfectly and I feel fine. A big thanks also to ButlerBuilt Professional Seat Systems, which we believe are the safest made, and to DJS Safe Seat.” Continue reading Scelzi Grateful for Strong Safety Products following Wild Crash at Knoxville

Scelzi Closes All Star Ohio Speedweek with Top-10 Finish at Eldora

Scelzi Closes All Star Ohio Speedweek with Top-10 Finish at Eldora

Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (June 27, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi capped his inaugural Ohio Speedweek with a top-10 finish during his debut at the famed Eldora Speedway last Saturday.

“To go to Eldora and get a top 10, I was really happy with that and to end Speedweek with a good finish like that was great,” he said.

The Speedweek, which had eight Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions races in nine days throughout Ohio, was a learning experience for Scelzi.

“It was the toughest week of racing in my entire life, but it was so much fun to see so many tracks and race with some of the best guys in the country,” he said. “They have some of the stoutest competition in the country. It was great to learn and get an idea of what’s it like racing back in Ohio. The tracks are completely different than in California. They are very dry, dusty and definitely a new challenge that takes getting used to compared to the heavy style of tracks in California.”

Scelzi had several bright moments throughout the difficult week. His first came a week ago Monday at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, where Scelzi opened the night by qualifying 24th quickest overall and fastest in his group.

“We went quick time in group four,” he said. “That was huge for us. The track was so similar to (Thunderbowl Raceway in) Tulare in every aspect. I felt really, really comfortable. We went fourth to second in the heat race and I felt like we had something in the main event.

“We were up to seventh at one point in the main event. I was running in eighth and went down into turn three and hit a hole. It lifted the car up and spun me around. It was a bummer because we were so fast to run in the top 10. Luckily it didn’t tear anything up. We were able to restart and get around a few cars.”

Scelzi rebounded from the spin, which forced him to restart at the back of the field, to post a 13th-place finish.

The other Speedweek main event he advanced into came during the finale last Saturday at Eldora Speedway, where Scelzi timed in 22nd quickest and seventh in his group. He then powered from seventh to fourth place in a heat race to lock into the 15th starting position for the main event.

“It was unlike anything else I’d been to,” he said. “I felt a comfort right away in hot laps. It was one of those places that was so fast and so banked, but it had similarities to Knoxville Raceway and I-80 Speedway if they were mixed together. That was huge with me feeling comfortable quickly.

“We were able to get to eighth in the first six or seven laps of the feature. I got to racing with Kraig (Kinser) and it burned my left rear tire off so we weren’t able to move forward any further.”

Scelzi ended with a ninth-place result, which marked his ninth top 10 of the season.

He is scheduled to return to National Sprint League competition this Friday and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, where he scored a seventh-place finish during his debut earlier this month.

Giovanni Scelzi Aiming for Third Straight Win in Family Micro Sprint

Inside Line Promotions – MARION, Ill. (June 20, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi is seeking his third consecutive victory in his family owned micro sprint this Friday when the team will venture to Plaza Park Raceway.

Scelzi, who picked up his first win of the season on April 30 at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif., was victorious during his most recent visit to the bullring in Visalia, Calif., on May 20 when he swept the night.

“We’ve been running well the last couple of times out in the family car so I’m looking forward to trying for three in a row,” he said. “I think our program is getting stronger and stronger.”

Scelzi is coming off a sour trip to the Highbanks Hustle last weekend when he drove for Kyle Anderson at the marquee event hosted by Southern Illinois Raceway.

“We fought engine issues throughout the practice night on Thursday and we think we had those turned around for Friday’s opener,” Scelzi said.

Scelzi powered from ninth to fourth place during a heat race on Friday before he was involved in a wild flip while running third in a qualifier. That ended the night early for the team, which elected not to return to action on Saturday.

“There were close to 120 cars there and we were off to a good start after the heat race,” Scelzi said. “I just hit a hole in turn one and went for a big ride.

“I want to thank Kyle and his family for the opportunity. I hope we get to work together again.”

Giovanni Scelzi Sweeps Plaza Park Raceway Event and Makes Midget Debut

Giovanni Scelzi Sweeps Plaza Park Raceway Event and Makes Midget Debut

Inside Line Promotions – VENTURA, Calif. (May 23, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi enjoyed a dominating performance on Friday at Plaza Park Raceway, where he swept the night to score his second straight micro sprint victory.

“I feel like we’ve been good the last year and haven’t had the good finishes,” he said. “Now we haven’t lost a race with this new motor yet so that’s pretty cool.”

Scelzi kicked off the night at the bullring in Visalia, Calif., by setting quick time during qualifying. He then charged from fourth to win a heat race. A six-car feature inversion lined Scelzi up on the outside of the third row for the 30-lap main event.

“On the first start I was in second and then they called the start back,” he said. “Once we got going I got into third by the third lap. Me and Jake Hagopian both passed Jake Andreotti halfway through. There was a yellow with about nine laps to go. The track was slick to the wall so it was really wide. I passed for the lead, but another yellow came out with about five or six laps to go so that sent me back to second.”

Scelzi slid Hagopian for the top spot in turns three and four on the restart and took the lead for good entering turn one. He led the closing laps for his second triumph of the season and first at Plaza Park Raceway.

The weekend concluded on Saturday at Ventura Raceway, where Scelzi made his midget debut driving for Cory Kruseman.

“In hot laps we had some motor trouble so we didn’t get any laps,” he said. “It was sputtering real bad. I didn’t make very good laps in qualifying and we still had some motor problems so we didn’t qualify well.”

Scelzi qualified 27th quickest. However, he made up for it during the heat race when he powered from seventh to second place. That lined him up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.

“We got to fifth and then we got spun out,” he said. “There was a restart with about 10 laps to go and going into turn one with a few laps to go we got spun out. I went to the back and wasn’t able to go anywhere after that.”

He was credited with a 17th-place result.

Giovanni Scelzi Puts Together Another Strong Sprint Car Performance

Giovanni Scelzi Puts Together Another Strong Sprint Car Performance

Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (May 16, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi was oh so close to earning his first career sprint car victory last Friday at Keller Auto Speedway.

Scelzi, who was driving for Roth Motorsports, led 20 of the first 24 laps and he was in the lead with six laps remaining when a caution bunched the field together.

“Leading can be the worst place to be late in a race when the yellow comes out,” he said. “You don’t know where everyone else is running. Cory Eliason drove around me in turns one and two on the restart. A couple of laps later a guy slid in front of me in turns one and two. He went off the race track and it took all the air off my nose and I went off the edge. I was in the dirt just spinning the tires.”

Scelzi ended with a sixth-place result, which gives him a top six in all four career sprint car features.

“I can’t thank Dennis and Teresa Roth and Todd Ventura enough for the opportunity and the great car they provide,” he said. “I had an amazing car on Friday.”

Scelzi opened the night by qualifying third quickest.

“We drew a late number, but that place doesn’t change much,” he said. “My goal every night is to try to lock into the dash through qualifying. That makes your whole night easier.”

Scelzi did just that and he finished where he started – fourth – in a heat race to make the dash. He then pulled the No. 1 during the dash redraw to start the dash on the pole.

“We had an engine problem in the dash, but we got that fixed before the feature,” he said. “They changed a rocker arm so that was really impressive. That shows how good this team is.”

Scelzi’s dash win gave him the pole position for the 30-lap main event.

“We had one of the fastest cars in the race,” he said. “I was running the bottom in turns one and two and the top in turns three and four. The cushion was at the edge of the track in turns three and four.

“Colby (Copeland) slid me halfway through the race and I slid him back a few laps later. I was so pumped when that happened. I made a mistake and got him right back. I was in a great position until that last caution, but we learned from it and I think we’re getting closer to that first win.”

Scelzi wrapped up his weekend on Saturday by helping Nikko and Alex Panella at a micro sprint race at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif.

“That was a great night,” he said. “Nikko and Alex did a great job. Nikko won and Alex ran second.”

Scelzi will return to action this Friday at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif., where he will race his family owned micro sprint. Scelzi will then make his midget debut driving for Cory Kruseman on Saturday at Ventura Raceway in Ventura, Calif.

Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (May 3, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi was well on his way to earning a pair of top 10s last weekend at Silver Dollar Speedway before a flat tire ended the doubleheader two laps early.

Scelzi kicked off the weekend on Friday at the quarter-mile oval, where he qualified 10th quickest and won a heat race to earn a spot in the feature redraw. Unfortunately, he pulled the highest number – eight – during the random draw to start the main event on the outside of the fourth row. Giovanni Scelzi Earns Runner-Up Result during Second Career Sprint Car Race

Giovanni Scelzi Earns Runner-Up Result during Second Career Sprint Car Race

Inside Line Promotions – ANTIOCH, Calif. (April 25, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi powered to his first career podium finish in a sprint car during only his second career race in the sport.

The 14-year-old topped his fourth-place finish during his sprint car debut by earning a runner-up result last Saturday at Antioch Speedway, where he made a late-race bid to reach Victory Lane.

“Sprint cars are so big and lazy,” he said. “It’s completely different from what I’m used to. It’s just weird being in the driver seat because the last three or four years I’ve been working on them.

“(Antioch Speedway) is really, really small so it’s good getting a variety on my schedule. The track was slick to the fence. It’s good to race on different surfaces so I can hopefully get better quicker. I’ll be going to a few different places this year in a sprint car so hopefully it’ll help me be more versatile.”

Scelzi didn’t have any problems adjusting to the new division or a new track as he rallied from fifth to third place in a heat race to open the night.

“We got into fourth on the start and then about Lap 6 we passed a car on the entrance of turn three and pulled away,” he said. “I closed in on second, but we ran out of laps.”

That lined Scelzi up on the inside of the second row for the 25-lap main event.

“I fell to fourth on the initial start,” he said. “I got back up to third and ran there for a little. On a restart I passed Koen Shaw on the bottom in turns one and two for second probably halfway through. I ran up on the leader. On the last lap going into turn three he went to the bottom and I went to the top and he beat us by only half a car length at the finish line. It was pretty close at the end.”

Scelzi will take the momentum of a second-place result into next Friday’s sprint car race at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., where he will drive for Roth Motorsports. Scelzi will wrap up the weekend on Saturday in a micro sprint at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif.

Scelzi Earns 11th-Place Finishes in Bakersfield, Perris and Tucson

Inside Line Promotions – TUCSON, Ariz. (April 21, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi produced a trio of 11th-place finishes last weekend as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series wrapped up its spring swing through the West.

“My goal was three top 10s and we were more than capable of that,” he said. “It’s a great performance for our team to compete for a top 10 three nights with the World of Outlaws at tracks I’d never been to. I learned a ton going to three new places. We’re getting better every night and I’m a better driver every night.”

The weekend began on Friday at Bakersfield Speedway in Bakersfield, Calif., for the Budweiser Bash. Scelzi qualified 21st quickest before maneuvering his Roth Motorsports backed entry from seventh to fourth place in a heat race, which lined him up on the outside of the sixth row for the main event.
