Scelzi Picks Up Top Five at Atomic Speedway to Start Summer Trip on Strong Note

Inside Line Promotions – LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (May 31, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi is pleased with the opening weekend of his summer trip to the East.

Scelzi earned a fourth-place finish on Saturday during his debut at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, and he was in contention for a great night on Monday at Lawrenceburg Speedway with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series before being involved in a crash.

“I think that was a good debut for our first weekend on the road,” he said. “We had a lot of speed and adapted really quickly.”

The Roth Motorsports backed team kicked off the weekend on Saturday at Atomic Speedway after Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., was rained out. Scelzi qualified fourth quickest to start the night on a positive note.

“That was a different place,” he said. “I felt like we did really well. It was one-lap qualifying, which was tough. The track had slowed down a little so we were thrilled with our qualifying effort.”

He then finished third in a heat race to lock into the seventh starting position for the main event.

“The track was so slick and slow,” he said. “I ran the bottom for the beginning of the race and then tried the top. I wasn’t able to get the top working and felt more comfortable on the bottom. I fell back to 10th or 11th, but was able to work my way back up to sixth or seventh. A couple of guys crashed, which helped us and brought out cautions. I started working the middle of the track and was able to make my way to fourth. I passed for third, but the yellow came out setting up a green-white-checkered finish. I wasn’t able to get back around the guy so we finished fourth. That was one of the most fun races I’ve been a part of.”

The fourth-place result marked Scelzi’s fourth top five of the season.

He then made his debut at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Monday.

“It was an extremely fun track,” he said. “We were able to qualify 10th, which was my best Outlaws qualifying effort all year. In the heat race we were right there with (Paul) McMahan and (Donny) Schatz battling for second place for the first five or six laps. We ended up running fourth, which put us in the main event.”

Scelzi lined up on the outside of the seventh row for the main event.

“The track got really wide and had some ruts on the entry in turn one,” he said. “On the first lap I went from 14th to 11th. On the second lap we hit a big rut and when we landed it made a right turn into the wall. It was unfortunate to end with a DNF that early in the night.”

Scelzi was unable to finish the race and he was credited with a 23rd-place result.

He is scheduled to race this Friday at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., and Saturday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, with the National Sprint League.
