Scelzi Nearly Brings Home Back-to-Back Top 10s at Silver Dollar Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (May 3, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi was well on his way to earning a pair of top 10s last weekend at Silver Dollar Speedway before a flat tire ended the doubleheader two laps early.

Scelzi kicked off the weekend on Friday at the quarter-mile oval, where he qualified 10th quickest and won a heat race to earn a spot in the feature redraw. Unfortunately, he pulled the highest number – eight – during the random draw to start the main event on the outside of the fourth row.

“I was moved up a row to start and on the first start I went from sixth to fourth right away, but a red flag came out,” he said. “On the next attempt I fell to seventh. The first eight laps I struggled to get a rhythm and then we had a red flag. After that I seemed to get rolling. Kyle Hirst and I battled for a long time. I was able to get by him and with two laps to go I missed the bottom and he snuck by me so I ended seventh.”

Scelzi’s seventh-place finish marked his fifth top 10 of the season in his Roth Motorsports entry.

The team returned to the bullring on Saturday for the 26th annual Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series. Scelzi timed in fifth quickest during qualifying and he advanced from third to second place in a heat race to lock into the dash, where he placed seventh.

“The main event went 40 laps non-stop,” he said. “We were really strong. There were times we were ahead of Rico Abreu and Justin Sanders. With about four or five laps to go I was in sixth. The guy running in front of me slid off the track a bit and I was so close to him we made contact. I was able to keep going, but heading to the white flag my right rear tire exploded so we had a DNF.”

Scelzi was running fifth when the tire let go exiting turn two with less than two laps remaining. He limped into the pits and was credited with an 18 th-place result.

Scelzi will return to action this Saturday at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif., where he will pilot a sprint car for the Van Lare family during the King of the West event.

“They are a really strong team and have always had a driver,” he said. “This year they had an opening and I didn’t have a ride so it was one of those things that worked out. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

“I really like Petaluma. Last year I ran second for the majority of the race. I made a mistake late going for the lead and we ran third, but we’ve had a lot of good finishes there.”

Scelzi has earned a top-five finish at Petaluma Speedway during each of his three races the last three years.
