Giovanni Scelzi Dominates Budweiser Outlaw Nationals for Fourth Win in Five Races

Inside Line Promotions – VISALIA, Calif. (July 4, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi is firing on all cylinders heading into his busiest week of the season.

Scelzi captured the Budweiser Outlaw Nationals last Saturday at Plaza Park Raceway to garner his fourth victory in the last five races in his family owned micro sprint. Both confidence and momentum are high entering the Pace Chassis California Speedweek, which features four races at different tracks during a five-day stretch this week.

“Last year we carried some momentum into Speedweek,” he said. “We’ve won four of the last five so I think we’ll be good in this year’s Speedweek and we’ll be a contender.”

Scelzi opened last weekend’s Budweiser Outlaw Nationals doubleheader on Friday by setting quick time during qualifying. He then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to make the feature inversion, which was a zero. That lined him up on the pole for the 30-lap main event.

“I got to the lead off the start,” he said. “I was running the top at both ends. I think it was seven laps into it and a driver running toward the back spun out. He went backwards up the track and pinned me between the fence and him going into turn one.”

The collision knocked the front end out of Scelzi’s race car and he was unable to resume the race. He was credited with a 19th-place finish, which snapped a three-race winning streak.

Scelzi picked up right where he left off on Saturday during the weekend finale. He timed in second quickest during qualifying before winning a heat race after starting fourth. Once again the feature inversion was a zero so Scelzi started on the outside of the front row.

“In the feature we got the lead on the first corner,” he said. “It was a long race. There were two red flags for oil down. I split two lapped cars with eight laps to go and that was probably the most exciting it was.”

Scelzi led the duration of the feature for his fourth triumph of the season. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/SP5vOKzD2RA.

“It’s nice to have a motor that can get you out of trouble,” he said. “We’ve tried quite a bit of stuff. We have a decent baseline of what we need to do and where we need to start for Speedweek.”

California Speedweek starts on Tuesday at Dixon Speedway in Dixon, Calif., before events on Wednesday at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif.; Friday at Plaza Park Raceway; and Saturday at Lemoore Raceway in Lemoore, Calif.
