Scelzi Nets his Best World of Outlaws Result following Charge at Stockton

Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (March 21, 2016) – Dominic Scelzi is all smiles following what he described as his best weekend competing with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

Scelzi registered a career-best result with the series on Friday at the Stockton Dirt Track before he nearly capped the FVP Western Spring Shootout doubleheader on Saturday with his second straight top 10.

“It was an extremely good weekend,” he said. “I think we’re growing as a team and we are getting better every single night. I’ve had a race car every night this year that I’ve been able to drive. I’ve been able to learn and not have to worry about things a driver shouldn’t have to worry about when racing. My focus is on point and I think that has showed.” Continue reading Scelzi Nets his Best World of Outlaws Result following Charge at Stockton

Chevrolet Racing Enjoys Successful Weekend, Coast to Coast

Chevrolet Racing Enjoys Successful Weekend, Coast to Coast
Team Chevy Scores Multiple Victories in NASCAR and NHRA, and Corvette Racing Earns Another Endurance Race Win in IMSA

DETROIT – Two states, three series, seven victories. Chevrolet Racing enjoyed a successful weekend, winning in NASCAR, IMSA and NHRA races held in California and Florida.

When Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet SS and six-time series champion, won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., late Sunday, it capped a successful weekend for Chevrolet that saw multiple victories across multiple series:

· In IMSA, Corvette’s success in endurance races continued on Saturday with its GTLM class victory in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in Sebring, Fla.; the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R – driven by Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Marcel Fassler – won its second straight race to open the season.
· In NHRA, Chevrolet swept the 47th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla.:
§ John Force Racing’s Brittany Force earned her first career Top Fuel victory
§ JFR’s Robert Hight (Chevrolet Camaro SS) won in Funny Car for the 37th time in his career
§ Greg Anderson (Chevrolet Camaro SS) scored his 80th victory in Pro Stock
§ David Barton (COPO Camaro) won in the Factory Showdown Eliminator class.
· In NASCAR, Johnson’s victory in the Sprint Cup race in Fontana followed Austin Dillon’s (No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro) win on Saturday in the Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway; Dillon also won the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race.

“Going into a race weekend, our goal is to win every series and in every class,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “The Chevrolet teams, crews and drivers really delivered when it counted, with seven victories this weekend. We couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Kevin Harvick (No. 4 Chevrolet SS) finished second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event to give Chevrolet a 1-2 finish. In addition, Johnson’s victory also was the 77th of his career, moving him past the legendary Dale Earnhardt into sole possession of seventh place on NASCAR’s all-time wins list.

Corvette Racing now has won the last five of the world’s top endurance races: Sebring and Daytona in 2016, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Sebring and Daytona in 2015.

In addition, Chevrolet Performance-sponsored Donny Schatz of Tony Stewart Racing won two World of Outlaws events in Stockton, Calif., over the weekend.

Giovanni Scelzi Charges Toward Lead Before Mechanical Problem at Delta

Giovanni Scelzi Charges Toward Lead Before Mechanical Problem at Delta

Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (March 21, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi had the speed necessary to win last week. Unfortunately, he lacked much needed luck during his outdoor season debut on Thursday at Delta Speedway in a winged micro sprint.

Scelzi kicked off the event by qualifying third quickest out of nearly three dozen drivers around the bullring.

“My crew chief, Brent Ventura, and I talked a lot during the offseason about what we needed to do,” he said. “I felt like I made good laps in qualifying. The track had slicked off quite a bit and I went out late so I was happy with going third quick.”

Scelzi then advanced from fourth to third place during his heat race to lock into the eight-car feature inversion.

“In the heat race there was no need to push the issue,” he said. “We rolled around the bottom and ran third. I felt pretty good heading into the main event.”

Scelzi used the high groove to power his way into a podium position within the first third of the feature.

“The first four laps everyone was running the bottom,” he said. “I was the first one to move up to the cushion and we passed four guys. We had just passed for second and there was a caution so we got put back to third. The engine stumbled on the restart and about one lap later it quit.”

Scelzi was unable to finish and he was credited with a 21st-place result.

“It’s frustrating, but to be that strong right off the bat is a good sign,” he said. “Minus the mechanical problem it was a good start to the outdoor season.”

Scelzi’s next race is slated for April 1 at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif.

Wood Brothers Racing–Blown Tire Ends Blaney’s Bid For A Top-10 Finish At Auto Club

Blown Tire Ends Blaney’s Bid For A Top-10 Finish At Auto Club

March 20, 2016

Ryan Blaney kept his No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion among the top-fifteen for most of Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. He was poised to finish there before a blown tire with seven laps remaining sent him into the outside wall and out of the race. He wound up 35th, which leaves him 17th in the Sprint Cup standings heading into the circuit’s first off weekend of the season. He’s tied in points with fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Chase Elliott, who is 16th. Elliott gets the higher spot because his best finish this season is higher than Blaney’s.

Blaney said the tire issue that put him out of the race caught him by surprise.

“I don’t know what happened,” he said. “There was no warning, and the tire just exploded into turn three.”

Up until that point, he had a good weekend going.

Austin Dillon Earns Pole Award at Auto Club Speedway and Runs in Top-10 Before Finishing 24th in American Ethanol Chevrolet

“We win as a team and we lose as a team and this weekend we definitely experienced a little bit of both. We made huge strides as an organization earning the pole award and I liked the view from up front. We got a little bit behind in the middle of the race but we were able to battle back and race our way into the top-10. When the final caution came out it was never a question whether or not to pit, just whether to take two or four tires. We took four but had a parts failure and it hurt us in the end. Nothing we can do about it but be gracious in defeat. On to Martinsville Speedway.”

The No. 27 FVP/Menards Team Bounces Back After Pit-Road Penalty to Finish 15th at Auto Club Speedway

“Our race started out strong today in California. Right at the beginning the car was on the splitter but we made adjustments during the first caution that helped. The next stop we adjusted a little too far, then received a speeding penalty on pit road. The penalty put us a lap down and definitely set us back for a while. After taking the wave around, we got some positions back but needed more on the restarts. I’m proud of my team for not giving up today. We’ll take a weekend off then get back at it in Martinsville.”

– Paul Menard

Ryan Newman and the Caterpillar Team Forge On After a 14th-Place Finish at Auto Club Speedway

“Luke Lambert and the Caterpillar pit crew did a great job on pit road for me today. We had a top-10 Chevrolet for a good portion of the race. Our biggest challenge was a lack of grip and a loose-handling Chevrolet but we kept fine tuning on it. The pit crew busted off a fast stop at the end when we needed it to have us lined up in 10th on the final restart. Unfortunately the adjustment we made did not react the way we predicted and I drove as hard as I could to get that finish. It’s disappointing to come up short but at the same time, it’s encouraging to see the potential this team has as well as the rest of our RCR teammates. I mean, Austin Dillon drove up in the top 10 for most of the race and Paul Menard was right there with us so the hard work put in during the off season is producing solid results. Now that the West Coast tour is over, we can get a nice break and prepare for the long haul.”

B. FORCE, HIGHT VICTORIOUS AT GATORNATIONALS

GAINESVILLE, FL — John Force Racing made team history today winning their first Top Fuel national event and also winning both Top Fuel and Funny Car as Brittany Force and Robert Hight were victorious at the 47th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals. Force racing in her eighth final round defeated Terry McMillen in Top Fuel while Hight took out Ron Capps to secure his third Gatornationals career win. The wins secured berths for Brittany Force and Robert Hight in the Traxxas Shootout.

For Force and the Monster Energy team it was their second consecutive final round and moved the 27 year-old driver from Yorba Linda, California into the Top Fuel points lead for the first time in her career. Runner-Up Finish for Capps at NHRA Gatornationals Gives Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car Second Final Round Appearance of the Season

Gainesville, Florida (March 20, 2016) – For a second year in a row, Ron Capps fought his way to a final round appearance at Gainesville Raceway, but while the defending winner didn’t come away with his fourth coveted Wally from the 47th annual National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Gatornationals as he had hoped, his two final round appearances so far this season aboard his Don Schumacher Racing Dodge Charger R/T have him just one point out of the Funny Car points lead. I just didn’t have the tires on the car to race with those guys. To go there at the end and have good tires on the car, Harvick and I got by I guess Joey there at the start. Erica Enders–Gatornationals

Reigning champ Erica Enders nipped
by .01-second in Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20) — Back-to-back and reigning world Pro Stock champion Erica Enders went door-handle-to-door-handle with Allen Johnson in the opening round of eliminations at the 47th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, ultimately losing by a hundredth of a second, her third straight first-round loss.

“We’re getting so close to where we want to be, and we knew making the switch to Mopar would take some adjustments, but it’s still frustrating when you lose a drag race,” Enders said, “especially when you consider all of the success we’ve had the last two seasons.

“I know we’ll be alright and the guys are upbeat and telling me not to get down, but I suppose I’ve gotten a little spoiled. At the same time, I know we have the best team, the best crew guys, the best tuners, the best engine builders in the world under this awning, so there’s no doubt we’ll be back to our winning ways very soon. We just have to be patient.”

Johnson left with a miniscule .006-second head start but was able to hold off Enders’ Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge Dart as the two streaked down Gainesville Raceway. The margin of victory at top speed was estimated to be about four feet.

“I could see ‘Brutus’ (Johnson) out of the corner of my eye the whole way down,” Enders said. “That’s one big advantage we have without the hood scoop any more — you can see everything. I just did my thing and tried to be perfect going through the gears, but we came up a fender short.

“I keep saying it but we’ve only had these Hemi motors for a month, so it’s new to all of us, but when Jake Hairston and Nick Ferri tell me there are big things to come, I believe them. The more and more runs we make and the more dyno time those two have, the better it will be. Like I said, we have to be patient.”

The next stop on the NHRA tour is the 17th annual Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals, April 1-3, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, although Enders thinks she’ll be in the seat before that race begins.

“I’d imagine the guys will want to test some more,” Enders said. “It’s easy for us to go to Keith Haney’s track in Tulsa (Okla.) because it’s close to the race shop and that track is so good it’s just like anything we see on the national tour. We’ll probably hit it hard when the truck gets back to Oklahoma.

“Thanks to the fans here in Gainesville. They’ve been awesome. I wish we could have done more for them, but their support hasn’t wavered one bit. I’ll tell them all the same thing: Be patient with us.”

Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in battle of multi-time Pro Stock champs
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20) — Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his Elite Motorsports team didn’t take a gator-sized bite out of the competition, but the five-time Pro Stock champion is still pleased with the progress of his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart after the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals on Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.

Coughlin qualified a season-high No. 6, beat Chris McGaha in the first round, and scored a huge starting-line advantage on Greg Anderson in the second round before shaking the tires and falling out of the running.

“We took a small bite of their margin of performance advantage,” Coughlin said of the KB Racing-powered cars, each of which has won at the first two races. “I think the class itself is getting caught up a little bit by the looks of it. The Gray Motorsports cars are going faster, and we inched up on them a little bit more on the Mopar side. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. falls in battle of multi-time Pro Stock champs
