Austin Dillon Battles Tight-Handling Conditions En Route to Seventh-Place Finish in the Desert

“The Ruud Chevrolet was tight all day. We fought tight on exit for the majority of the race. The No. 2 team had good pit stops and put us third on the final restart, but we had to come back to pit road with 25 laps to go to get a set of fresh tires. Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and the boys didn’t give up. We ended the day with a top-10 finish, but we have some work to do. We’ll get it figured out and get back to victory lane this season.”

– Austin Dillon

Dillon Records Third Consecutive Top-10 Finish

“Today was an overall great day. We executed on all levels, made no mistakes and came home with a top-10 finish. We showed a lot of speed all weekend and were able to qualify well and race up front for a majority of the race. We even got to lead a few laps and show that we are capable of doing so. I was happy with our overall strategy from Nick (Harrison, crew chief) and Danny (Efland, engineer). We still have a lot of work to do as a company to get on the level of competition I know we are capable of being on. I’m looking forward to the last leg of the NASCAR Goes West trip.”

Brandon Jones Earns 11th-Place Despite an Up and Down Day at Phoenix

“It was an up and down kind of day for the No. 33 E-Z-Go Chevrolet team. We ran inside the top-10 for most of the day but on that last pit stop, we just got a little too far away from what the car needed. The No. 33 pit crew had a lot of great stops, and Mike (Hillman Jr., crew chief) made awesome calls to keep us in the top 10. I think the biggest thing is getting the car to turn better. If we can make that happen, we’ll definitely be able to contend for wins. It’s nice to leave Phoenix (International Raceway) with a solid finish. I haven’t had the best of luck here in previous years. Overall, it was a decent day for us.”

Brendan Gaughan Finishes 13th After Battling Handling Issues

“The team had a good day on pit road, but we couldn’t get the handling quite right during the race. We fought tight conditions in the middle and loose off through the turns. That’s the toughest condition in racing to fix. Shane (Wilson, crew chief) and the guys did everything we could to correct the car and gain in those 200 miles. The No. 62 team has had a couple of races in a row that didn’t quite go the way we wanted. We will re-group and finish off the west coast swing in California, a track that has always been really good for us.”

TEAM CHEVY PRACTICE NOTES
MARCH 12, 2016

MICHAEL ANNETT, NO. 46 PILOT FLYING J CHEVROLET SS – Involved in an accident during the first practice session on Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway.

WHAT HAPPENED?
“I really don’t know yet. That was our first time on the track, first lap. I haven’t seen a replay yet, but definitely got down there and the car just didn’t want to turn. I don’t know if we were on the splitter or if we cut down a right-front (tire). I just have to be able to see it to have a little better idea. I cranked on the wheel and it wouldn’t go straight. We changed a lot of stuff last night. We weren’t happy at all with where we were, we made a bunch of changes. I don’t know if we just missed it a little bit, but I will have to see a replay.”

DOES THIS AFFECT THE REST OF THE WEST COAST SWING FOR YOU GUYS?
“I’m not sure. I know our Las Vegas car was planning to be the California car and I’m pretty sure that is the one we are going to have to unload now. If we need to get another car out here tomorrow, we will.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S PRO SERVICES, met with members of the media at Phoenix International Raceway to discuss yesterday’s qualifying incident. Full Transcript:

HOW DO YOU FEEL?
“I feel good, just very thankful that I drive in an era with such safe driver compartments, softer walls, HANS device all those things. Years ago that would have probably been a concussion at a minimum and to feel as good as I do and no sore spots or aches or pains is really good. It’s a good time for the drivers of today.”

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED?
“Yeah, as I came into Turn 1 just working my way through the center of the corner and jumped in the gas and as I jumped in the gas, I guess I pull on the wheel when I do that. As I pulled on the wheel it just came off in my hands. So, I was just sitting there with no steering and holding the steering wheel staring at the blue wall and I was along for the ride at that point.”

DID YOU TRY TO BRAKE OR WHAT DID YOU DO?
“I got to the brakes briefly. I remember looking down at the steering shaft and seeing it spinning and I knew there was no way I could get the wheel back on. It was all happening so quick. The interesting thing is I made it all the way down pit lane, got out on the track, made a lap and a half around the race track and then it came off where it did. So, just proves to me that it can happen anytime, anywhere. I would assume it would have happened leaving pit road pretty soon. But we’ve just got to make sure we get these wheels locked on. I’m going to make some small changes in my routines in getting in the car. We have lines in the steering shaft to make sure that your steering wheel is straight; I’m going to have an additional line to make sure that the steering wheel is on far enough and hopefully it is locked at that point. To be honest Jeff Gordon gave me that suggestion last night when I was talking with him. I’m going to put that into effect right away.”

WAS THIS AN ERROR ON YOUR PART OR WAS THIS A PART FAILURE?
“No, this one is one me. Last night with the chaos and the guys trying to get the back-up car out, they didn’t have a chance to look at things closely. This morning coming in they have and this one is one me.”

ARE YOU SURPRISED STUFF LIKE THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN MORE OFTEN? IS THAT SOMETHING YOU KIND OF TAKE FOR GRANTED?
“I’ve always believed that my belts, my HANS, my helmet being buckled and my steering wheel are my responsibility. Members on the team say ‘hey this one is on me’ that is not the case it’s the driver’s responsibility to make sure he is safe. Those three or four connection points are my life line. This is on me. I am completely shocked that is happened to me. Out of racing on four wheels my entire life I’ve always had a wheel that has come on and off, I’ve never had this happen. I’ve seen it happen to others and I’ve thought ‘how in the world does that happen’, well it just happened to me. It’s just a freak thing.”

IS THAT ONE OF THE MOST FRIGHTENING MOMENTS YOU’VE EVER HAD IN A RACE CAR BEING OUT OF CONTROL LIKE THAT?
“Yeah, I was just talking with Brendan Gaughan and that sensation is… the last time I had it was at Watkins Glen with no brakes. There are only very few moments in my racing career I have had that moment where you are just totally helpless and along for the ride. It’s not a fun position to be in.”

YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE STEERING COLUMN SPINNING AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS IN YOUR HAND WHAT IS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND?
“Hold on. Maybe a four letter word or two crossed my mind as well. When I saw the blue and the angle that I was at and the speed I was at, I knew it was going to be a big impact. I was just so thankful when I came off the wall that feet, legs, arms, wrists, head was all fine and nothing was hurting. Again, just thankful for the world that I drive in today with all the safety improvements.”

WHY COULDN’T YOU SAY IMMEDIATELY WHAT HAPPENED?
“I didn’t want to falsely blame something or someone or whatever the situation may be. Honestly, it’s such a delicate topic I just wanted to be able to talk to my crew guys and look through everything first before it became national news. Even last night it was very difficult to find out what the cause was because of the tight time frame trying to get the back-up car out. This morning the picture is crystal clear what happened. I just didn’t get the wheel locked on.”

Wood Brothers Racing–Blaney Qualifies 12th For First Phoenix Start In Sprint Cup

Blaney Qualifies 12th For First Phoenix Start In Sprint Cup

March 11, 2016

Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team rode the momentum of a strong sixth-place run at Las Vegas into Phoenix International Raceway on Friday and came away with the 12th starting spot for Sunday’s Good Sam 500.

The rookie Blaney and his rookie crew chief Jeremy Bullins had never before been to Phoenix with a Sprint Cup car, but quickly got the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion up to speed in opening practice.

Blaney’s best lap of 137.101 miles per hour put him 12th on the speed chart, and he backed that up by qualifying in that same position.

But to do it, he had to advance through the first two rounds of knock-out qualifying and make his first appearance of the season in the third and final round.

Blaney was 5th fastest in the first round and 11th in the second, but dropped to 12th in the final round, interrupted by a red flag brought out for a crash by Jimmie Johnson. His official qualifying lap was at 136.307 mph.

“It wasn’t bad,” Blaney said. “We didn’t have a lot of speed that last round unfortunately, but it isn’t a bad day for us making it to the last round.”

“That is about all you can ask for, and we worked hard at it today. The guys on the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team have been working really hard, and they have made me a really fast Fusion, so I am most looking forward to getting out there and seeing what we can do in the race on Sunday.”

Team co-owner Eddie Wood said he was particularly pleased with the performance, given Blaney’s and Bullins’ inexperience at the one-mile oval in the Arizona desert.

“I’m proud of how far they’ve come in a short time,” Wood said. “We’ll go back to work tomorrow and give it our best on Sunday.”

Rahal Leads Honda in Opening Day Practice at St. Petersburg
• Two-time 2015 race winner runs fourth as 2016 season opens
• Honda drivers claim four of top eight, six of top 12 positions
• Rossi bests rookies with 13th fastest time

Graham Rahal picked up where he left off at the end of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series, leading the Honda field in “opening day” practice to officially start the 2016 season in advance of Sunday’s Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Rahal’s best lap of 1:10.2924 was fourth on the day, just ahead of three fellow Honda drivers as no fewer than 10 drivers in the 22-car field bettered the quickest time recorded on Friday in last year’s event. Takuma Sato, James Hinchcliffe, Carlos Munoz and Jack Hawksworth ended the day fifth through eighth, respectively, with Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay also placing in the top 12.

Activities on the temporary street circuit continue tomorrow, with final practice and qualifying. Sunday’s 110-lap season-opening round of the Verizon IndyCar Series starts at 12:30 p.m. EDT, with live network television coverage on ABC.

Graham Rahal (#15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda): “I’m pleased with the performance of the Steak ‘n Shake car there at the end [of the session]. The guys did a great job getting the changes we needed done over the lunch break and putting us in a pretty good spot. We’ve got a little bit of work to do but all in all we are closing the gap.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 DOW CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media at Phoenix International Raceway and discussed his fast start to the season, making gains throughout the off-season, his relationship with crew chief Slugger Labbe, the first practice session and many other topics. Full Transcript:

TALK ABOUT IMPROVING AS A RACE TEAM AND YOUR OUTLOOK FOR THIS WEEKEND AT PHOENIX:
“It’s been a good start to the year for our Dow team. We have just been plugging along trying to eliminate mistakes each and every week. Things have been going well for us. Hopefully, we can continue this streak and continue our run to the front of the field.”

SITTING TOP 10 IN POINTS WITH TWO TOP 10 FINISHES IN THREE RACES, WHAT DO YOU CREDIT TO YOUR TEAM’S FAST START?
“Hard work in the off season is one thing. I think if you look back to last year, we have kind of had this streak going to the end of last year. I really enjoy working with Slugger (Labbe, crew chief) and my group of engineers that are with me. We have just tried to eliminate mistakes and make me a better driver and our team better race cars. The work is paying off we just have to keep plugging along and never stop working.”

RATE YOUR PRACTICE THIS MORNING AND WHAT ARE YOU HOPING YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH IN QUALIFYING?
“This morning’s practice went pretty well off the truck, I thought. We were third on the board right there in race runs. Once everybody switched to qualifying runs we were probably about fifth and then we backed up to 14th at the very end. I think we have a little bit of speed we can get out of the car. These tires are quite a bit different, I feel like, than last years. Overall the balance has been looser for me the whole weekend long in Xfinity and Cup. Kind of working with that and seeing what we can figure out. I think as we have run here the track has gotten tighter like our rubber has laid down. I don’t know if the IndyCar rubber had something to do with why it was so free. But the track is definitely starting to rubber back to where I normally can run. We will see what we’ve got right here. Hopefully, we didn’t over tighten from this morning’s practice to qualifying. If we did our jobs we should be in the top 12. That is our goal every week is to make it to that final round and give ourselves a shot at a pole.”

DRIVERS OFTEN TALK ABOUT BEING ABLE TO FEEL THE TIRES IF THEY ARE SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE LAST RACE. CAN YOU DESCRIBE THAT FROM THE LAYMAN’S PERSPECTIVE? DO YOU FEEL THAT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY OR IS IT HOW THE CAR ACTS IN THE TURN?
“For our car it’s just … and another thing I haven’t accounted for is the lack of downforce. I’m trying to get to the same braking points that I got to last year and it’s been difficult to get to those same braking points. I find myself struggling a little on entry. I’ve got to take into account that the spoiler is a lot smaller and just kind of getting used to that. But the tire on both sides seems to be freer and our overall balance. So, just working around it and as far as the differences I can help you a little bit. Last week we were at Charlotte doing a tire test all week. Every compound you chose if it was a softer one you went faster. If it was a harder one you went slower. Some tracks that is different, but most of the time you want the softest you can get and usually if you have a soft tire it falls off into a run. Soft means a lot of grip for a shorter period of time. Hard means not as much grip, but hold on for a long period of time.”

WHEN YOU HAVE AN ANIMATED EXCHANGE LIKE YOU DID WITH SLUGGER LAST WEEK AT LAS VEGAS HOW DO YOU GUYS GO ABOUT HASHING THAT OUT AFTER THE FACT? ALSO, WHAT WOULD YOU CHALK YOUR GAINS UP THIS YEAR TO? MORE OF A COMFORT WITH SLUGGER OR THE LOW DOWNFORCE PACKAGE BEING TO YOUR LIKING?
“Our best finish last year came on the high downforce package at Michigan. I wouldn’t account it to just the downforce switches or what not. I think it’s just better race cars overall and then also working better as a team. When it comes to communication with Slugger, I’ve been kind of answering this question all week; we are like two brothers a little bit. We are both very aggressive personalities. He is not afraid to tell me when he thinks I’ve messed up and I’m not afraid to tell him when I think he has messed up. The good thing about that is when you leave you can go home and drink a beer or Coke or whatever you wanted to after the race.

“It’s a part of being intense. I’ve been intense in all the different levels of racing I’ve come up through here. I felt like we lacked a little bit of that intensity that I’m used to when we got to the Cup Series. Slugger kind of brought that back to me. If you listen to Danny Stockman (Austin’s crew chief in the Truck and Xfinity Series) and me in our previous championship runs we were pretty aggressive with each other on the radio. We are not afraid to tell each other ‘hey this sucks’ or ‘we have to do something different.’ Slugger is really good at being blunt with things and I’ve learned to be able to take it and he can take it too. That is what I love about him. I can tell him right to his face, ‘hey this is no good’. He will go to work on it. Same with me, if he thinks I’m not driving right I will go to work too. We’ve got a pretty good understanding throughout our team that we are a family on and off the track. If we get into each other it’s like the big brother/little brother rule – you can mess with him all you want, but no one else can. When it comes down to it we’ve got each other’s backs. It’s just we want the best, we want to win.”

DO YOU THINK THE GAINS HAVE BEEN MADE ACROSS THE BOARD AT RCR? DO YOU THINK IT’S PRIMARILY YOU AND SLUGGER JUST HITTING IT OFF?
“I think it’s been across the board. Our team’s averages are pretty good right now. It’s still early in the season, but I like the speed that we are showing as a group. I think, obviously, our communication, Slugger and I’s have been pretty good so far. As a whole at RCR I think we are going to be better throughout the year because of the connection between all the crew chiefs and drivers. I think as a group RCR has gotten better in the off season. We still have areas that we have a lot of work to do in. I think as the year goes on we will get better. I really enjoyed the Charlotte test. I felt like we went about it, probably one of the best tests that we have had as a group as far as just trying to make our cars better through at test. Instead of just adjusting on what we had, I think we did some things that were kind of out of the box to try and see if there was anything there juice wise. Just trying to get our cars better.”

An Interview With:

ART ST. CYR

T.E. McHALE: Good afternoon, everyone. Thanks for being with us for this first of a series of media briefings we’ll be hosting at Honda hospitality throughout the 2016 season. Speaking from both a personal and professional standpoint, I can tell you it’s great to be back at a racetrack, and our guest today is Art St. Cyr, the president of HPD, Honda Performance Development. Art, thanks for making time to be with us today.
ART ST. CYR: Thanks for having me, and welcome, everybody.
T.E. McHALE: Let’s just kind of start with an overview of Honda’s teams and drivers in the 2016 season. Give us your initial impressions of how our lineup shapes up.
ART ST. CYR: We’re actually pretty excited about our lineup this year. It’s similar to what we had last year, but we have added a few very exciting younger drivers to our mix. We have three young American drivers in Conor Daly, Alexander Rossi and Spencer Pigot. We’re very excited to see how they do now that they get in the big cars here. I guess calling them rookies is a little bit of a misnomer for a lot of them. We are very excited about that. Combine that with a lot of our veteran talent, the I don’t know if you call Graham Rahal old, but Graham, Marco and Ryan Hunter Reay, James Hinchcliffe, we have a pretty good stable of drivers of experience and youth, and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can do this year. JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S PRO SERVICES CHEVROLET SS met with media and discussed the new rules package, the tire, his opinion following last week’s race in Las Vegas, athletes on pit crews, and more. FULL TRANSCRIPT:

ON THE NEW RACE PACKAGE, WHAT DO YOU KNOW NOW THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW GOING INTO THE START OF THE SEASON?
“From inside the car, I feel like I can get closer to cars around me and not have my car kinda bug-out in traffic; and I feel like this is going to create more passing opportunities. I think some tracks might show that a little bit easier than others, but I feel like riding in traffic the car is a lot more in control deep in the pack and I can get closer to cars in front of me. From the rules package standpoint, that’s what we’re trying to create. And I think we’re on the right track.”

NEXT WEEK, YOU’RE RUNNING THE SUPERMAN PAINT SCHEME, WHILE DALE EARNHARDT JR. IS RUNNING THE BATMAN. HOW DID YOU GUYS DETERMINE WHO WAS GOING TO DO WHICH ONE, AND WERE YOU A BATMAN-GUY OR A SUPERMAN-GUY GROWING UP?
“I didn’t have a say, but I was very happy to end up with Superman. I think Mark Martin called me that years ago, and some have used that reference in a nickname from time to time. I feel like it was much more fitting than Batman. Superman is going to kick Batman’s butt, bottom line.”

YOU TALKED IN JANUARY AT THE LAS VEGAS TEST ABOUT THE SPEEDS THAT YOU FOUND AND WONDERED WHETHER IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT. WAS THERE MUCH CHANGE BASED ON THE TIRE SELECTION, THAT YOU SAW LAST WEEK? AND, DO YOU THINK MORE STEPS NEED TO BE TAKEN BASED ON WHAT YOU SAW LAST WEEK?
“I really feel it’s a learning process. The conversations that myself and the drivers’ council and the drivers in general had with NASCAR and Goodyear, we all understand that every surface creates a different challenge. At the test session, I commended Goodyear for coming in with the softest tire, the highest wear tires that they have kind of built in the last period of time. It worked fantastic at Kansas and I still think it worked well at Las Vegas. Just as a reference point, I think we were maybe at least a second, if not closer to a second and a half slower in the race weekend than we were in the test. So, temperature has a big impact on the top speed of the cars and the tire fall-off. I guess we all kind of knew, but it was one of those moments for me that I had to remind myself of. So, it’s a moving target. This tire and downforce package is new. I think as we get into the summer months, this package is really going to shine and the soft tire is really going to create the racing that we want. At the same time, Goodyear and NASCAR and the drivers’ council and everybody involved is continuing to make it better and better. All the drivers that I spoke to following the Vegas race, sure the speeds were a little high; they weren’t as high as the test, which was a great step in the right direction. But everybody loved driving the race cars. There was a lot of positive feedback from the competitors.”

THERE WAS A STRETCH A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN NOBODY COULD BEAT YOU AT THIS PLACE. HOW HARD IS IT TO BEAT KEVIN HARVICK RIGHT NOW?
“It’s tough. There’s no way around it. I was probably one of the few that was screaming and yelling, don’t change this place, don’t repave it, don’t reconfigure it. I feel like we’ve had some good showings here. But coming to this track, I definitely put that No. 4 car as my number-one pick. I think we’re closing the gap some. The Penske cars usually shine here, so I expect those two to be pretty good. I just heard the tail end of Kevin’s conversation and you start thinking it through and you look at Kyle (Busch) and his success here, which then opens up the JGR cars. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I guess if I’m forced to, the No. 4 car is the one that we’ll all be paying close attention to.”

A GROWING TREND IN NASCAR IS HIRING DIVISION ONE ATHLETES ON YOUR PIT CREW. DO YOU HAVE ANY? AND, WHY DO YOU THINK THAT’S SUCH A GROWING TREND IN NASCAR?
“To find speed, agility, strength in individuals isn’t the hardest thing to do. There’s lots of fit people around the country. The hard part is when you take somebody that’s so physically talented and put them in pit stop practice, they usually perform well. And we’ve learned that when you pull down pit lane and you’re crewing Dale (Earnhardt) Junior’s car or Jimmie Johnson’s car, the pressure that comes with that is pretty high. And what we’re finding is these athletes that are coming out of college that have been there in those pressure moments can’t handle that situation better. And, they also bring a lot of other assets to the team. Racing in general has really been a group of people that kind of liked each other and all loved racing, but found a way to work with one another. And the locker-room environment that I know our No. 48 team is bringing and that our over-the-wall guys bring is something special. And they’re creating a bond and a relationship internally that I don’t think would have existed otherwise. So, sure, the pressure and the physical fitness that they have and their ability to perform is one major role. But the locker-room affect is really big, too.”

March 10, 2016

Ryan Blaney and his crew chief Jeremy Bullins have never competed in a Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway, site of this weekend’s Good Sam 500.

But they have raced on a similar track, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which like Phoenix is a mile in length and relatively flat.

At New Hampshire last year, Blaney put his team’s No. 21 Ford Fusion on top of the scoreboard after the opening session of knock-out qualifying and wound up starting 16th.

The notes gathered that weekend in Loudon, N.H., have Bullins encouraged as the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team prepares for a three-race stretch of racing at tracks that he and Blaney have never run as Cup competitors.
