Kasey Kahne Racing – Results Recap

Kasey gets in on the action, wins at Lincoln Speedway

The Easter off week brought some much deserved R & R to the KKR teams, but it provided the perfect opportunity for Kasey to get back behind the wheel of a sprint car and he did so in great fashion by winning Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway (PA).

Last week Pittman and the Great Clips team found some momentum finishing second two straight nights the second of which was special – Placerville was the track where he was involved in a hard crash with Jason Johnson and broke his collar bone. Pittman also jumped two spots in the points from fifth to third, while Brad maintains his point lead.

Pro Stock champ Erica Enders’ Las Vegas hot streak is unlike any other

Pro Stock champ Erica Enders’ Las Vegas hot streak is unlike any other
LAS VEGAS (March 30) — The winning streak Pro Stock champion Erica Enders is on at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is likely some sort of Las Vegas record.

Heading into the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals this weekend, Enders has won four national events, two K&N Horsepower Challenge races, and 22 rounds — all consecutively — in Las Vegas. The last time she didn’t win there was in October 2013.

Only Greg Anderson has won as many national events in a row in Las Vegas, but the K&N Challenge wasn’t contested in Vegas at the time.

“It’s awesome to have that kind of run, and it’s pretty unheard of,” Enders said. “We’ve had an incredible two years there, and we’ve got a great opportunity ahead of us to do well this weekend. Twenty-two consecutive round-wins in a row is huge, so Vegas has obviously been good to me. I’m hoping Lady Luck will get on our side this weekend. We certainly haven’t had the best start to the year.” Continue reading Pro Stock champ Erica Enders’ Las Vegas hot streak is unlike any other

Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Executive Jon Wood Was A Martinsville Winner Back In The Day

March 30, 2016

As the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team and driver Ryan Blaney head to Martinsville Speedway for this weekend’s STP 500, race fans in the Virginia area are celebrating the return of the Wood Brothers to their home track for the first time since 2011 and for the first time as regular Sprint Cup competitors since 2008.

The Woods’ long history at Martinsville is being recalled, including team founder Glen Wood’s success at Martinsville in the series now known as Sprint Cup, where he won four poles and had three top-three finishes, and in the Modified Division where in 1960 he sped to victory in a 1937 Ford known then and now as the Backseater.

That car gets its name from the fact that the Woods, taking advantage of the more liberal rules of the Modified division, moved the engine so far back that the driver’s seat was pushed back to where the car’s back seat normally would be. FIVE QUESTIONS WITH JOHN FORCE RACING FUNNY CAR CREW CHIEF MIKE NEFF
Veteran tuner helps propel Robert Hight and Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro SS to points lead entering fourth round of Mello Yello NHRA Drag Racing Series

Mike Neff, a two-time National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car championship crew chief and race-winning Funny Car driver, has been paired with John Force Racing Funny Car driver Robert Hight since midway through the 2013 season. The Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro SS team is off to a fast start this season, with a victory at the Gatornationals two weeks ago and two other semifinal appearances. Hight, who is 8-2 in eliminations, is the Funny Car points leader entering the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals this weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Neff shares insights on the season so far:

Q: A successful season starts with a solid foundation. What did the off-season program focus on to contribute to such a strong start to the 2016 Funny Car season?
MIKE NEFF: The off-season was more detail-oriented and refining what we had. We finished last season fairly strong; Robert’s car was running good. He won Vegas, the second to the last race, and won Brainerd, so coming down to the end of the year we were definitely getting better and felt like we were really close to what we wanted. Over the winter we filled in a couple of gaps and polished what we had, and came out this year and it’s just clicked. We hit on a few things in testing, which put us right in the middle of it. At the beginning of last year, we had to take a step back because we changed our whole clutch program around by adding another disc (from five to six discs), and that is a big learning curve. When you do that, you pretty much shelve your history of what you’ve done and go down a new road and sort it out. That was part of the reason why we didn’t perform as well as we usually do. At the end of the year it all started to come together, and we just looked at refinements in the off-season. It’s continued early this year in that we’re looking the best we have in a long time. Casey Currie Overcomes Early Obstacles to Have a Solid First Weekend in Chandler, AZ

Casey Currie Overcomes Early Obstacles to Have a Solid First Weekend in Chandler, AZ
CORONA, California (March 29, 2016) – The race season has officially started for the Lucas Oil Off Road Series and though it got off to a rough start, Casey came away with a solid finish to the weekend in Chandler, Arizona. A few days prior to the races, Casey had to switch to his backup truck with no testing or tuning done to it. However, that didn’t slow him and his team down. During the weekend’s races, Casey made huge strides and was able to find his way through the field and finish in the top 10 on Saturday and in the top 5 on Sunday. Though not quite the finishes he wanted this weekend, he has put himself in a place where, in the next few races, he can work his way to the front of the field in points.

A few days prior to the race weekend, Casey and his team were going through the race truck and found out that they had lost the engine. They were going to need to start the back up truck with no testing and no tuning. Because he was starting with a blank slate, it wasn’t surprising that Casey had some issues during practices and qualifying. Casey knew there was work to be done on the vehicle, but with his team ready to go, they got to work and got the truck ready to take on the largest class of Pro trucks in short course off road racing. Saturday rolled around and still with a few early-season racing bugs to work out managed to pull out a top ten finish, avoiding any carnage and keeping his Jeep on point for Sunday’s race. Six-time NHRA world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. has returned to the Pro Stock class on a full-time basis in 2016. He is racing a new Rick Jones Race Cars-built Dodge Dart as a member of the Elite Motorsports team.

Jeg Coughlin Jr.
Last season, Jeg took a breather from the Pro Stock class but returned at midseason for a brief stint with Elite Motorsports. In three events, he recorded a runner-up and semifinal finish.
Jeg is racing as a teammate to two-time world champ Erica Enders. The Elite team also includes the Pro Stock entries of Drew Skillman and Vincent Nobile. Rickie Jones is the crew chief for Jeg’s Hemi-powered Dodge, and his father, Rick, is the crew chief for Enders. Veteran crew chiefs Mark Ingersoll and Brian “Lump” Self round out the Elite roster as the crew chiefs for Skillman and Nobile, respectively. All four Elite teams and their crew chiefs share data and tuning advice.
The NHRA Pro Stock class has an entirely different look this season thanks to a number of major rules revisions. Electronic fuel injection has replaced carburetors, and as a result the cars no longer have big hood scoops. Pro Stock engines are now limited to a maximum of 10,500 rpm, and the wheelie-bar length has been shortened.
After the first three events of the season, Jeg enters the Las Vegas event ranked No. 6 in the NHRA Mello Yello Pro Stock points standings.
In Las Vegas, Jeg will take part in the 32nd annual K&N Horsepower Challenge, a special event that features the top eight drivers in the Pro Stock class. The winner of the K&N Challenge will receive $50,000. After sitting out most of the 2015 season, Jeg was able to enter the event as the No. 8 seed by winning a special fan vote. He will race against Greg Anderson in Round 1. Continue reading Team JEGS Pre-race Notes: Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals

Allen Johnson Bets on Lucky 13 for the K&N Horsepower Challenge

GREENEVILLE, T.N. (March 29, 2016) – Marathon Petroleum Corporation/J&J Racing Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson makes the trip west for the 17th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals and will also be competing in the prestigious K&N Horsepower Challenge for the thirteenth time in his career.

After a semifinal appearance just a few weeks ago at the AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, Johnson feels the team left Gainesville Raceway with gained knowledge and high spirits.

“We left Gainesville with a little bit of momentum after going to the semis,” said Johnson. “Hopefully we can go to Las Vegas and start out right where we need to be. We struggled to make a good run until the final round of qualifying in Gainesville so hopefully we can go out there and be right where we want to be. The Marathon Petroleum team has been working really hard since Gainesville; I think they’ve made about 50 to 100 dyno pulls to learn more about the fuel injection and the motors.”

Johnson has taken home the win at this event two times before, 2012 and 2013.

For his 2012 victory, Johnson added himself to an elite few as the eighth driver to ever double-up after he won the K&N Horsepower Challenge on Saturday and came back to win the main event on Sunday. With the bonus K&N Horsepower Challenge on the horizon and $50,000 up for grabs, Johnson is excited to be involved in the shootout-style race with his new sponsor, Marathon Petroleum Corporation.

“To be one of the eight best racers in the country and duke it out for extra money is always a fun deal,” beamed Johnson. “Supporting K&N Filters and being in that group is huge because they’re very important to our class. They’ve been real good to Pro Stock and introducing Marathon Petroleum to the K&N Horsepower Challenge this year is a very big deal to us.”

Honda Racing–F4 LAUNCH ON PACE AS OFFICIAL TEST OF NEW CAR EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

F4 LAUNCH ON PACE AS OFFICIAL TEST OF NEW CAR EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS
Series and partners pleased with car’s debut
F4 Test Car

INDIANAPOLIS (March 28, 2016) – On the track for its first official test drive last week, the car for the new Formula 4 United States Championship powered by Honda exceeded all expectations as the series prepares for its debut in May.

The F4 U.S. Championship, organized and sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing, conducted the official test with two test drivers at Carolina Motorsports Park, a 2.23-mile road course in Kershaw, South Carolina.

The developmental test marked the first time the F4 U.S. Championship car took to the track. It featured a Honda Racing/HPD engine and Pirelli tires mounted onto a Crawford Composites chassis.

“After attending the first track test, I was very impressed with the car,” said Derrick Walker, President and CEO of SCCA Pro Racing. “This car is just what we needed as an entry-level formula car, and it was another milestone toward our first race on May 27 at Lime Rock Park.”

Over the course of the testing, adjustments were made to the ride height as well as wing, shock and spring adjustments, allowing the car to improve its performance each lap.

“The test was a howling success,” Crawford Composites President Max Crawford said. “The car ran flawlessly for two days and got better and better with each adjustment.”

The F4 series will consist of 15 races at five classic tracks when it kicks off at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, on May 27-28 and is scheduled to wrap-up Oct. 8-10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida.

Johnson Returns to Victory Lane at Placerville Speedway
Captures win one year after serious accident at same event
PLACERVILLE, Calif. — March 23, 2016 — After being involved in a horrible accident during this event last year that sidelined him for the season, Jason Johnson returned to Placerville Speedway for the 2nd Annual Brad Sweet presents the Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by Riebes Auto Parts and captured his first victory since Texas Motor Speedway in 2003.

Daryn Pittman, who was also injured in the same event last year, finished second to Johnson, as both drivers overcame their troubles from a year ago for podium finishes.

“We have a tremendously strong team right now, and things are clicking, and when they are clicking it is fun,” Johnson said. “Daryn [Pittman] and I were standing there in the dash and I was like ‘man I would be happy just walking out of here tonight’ and then we finish one and two.

“This was a place I really wanted to redeem myself. It’s really cool we are able to come to a small track like this and be able to race and I really got to thank Brad Sweet and thank all the fans for coming out, it’s been a great night.”

Johnson, a Eunice, La. –native, showed speed early in the night, clocking in with the second fastest time, just behind quick-time recipient Sean Becker, who is a native of Chico, Calif.

Johnson then piloted his Priority Aviation/Masilla Valley Transportation No. 41 to a victory in his heat, defeating Auburn, Calif. driver Andy Forsberg, which qualified him for the dash.

Coming short of sweeping all the races during the night, Johnson finished fourth in the dash, as Pittman, in the Great Clips/Sage Fruit No. 9, captured the victory in the 8-lap race after he overtook Forsberg on the opening lap.

Pittman, starting in the first position, lost the top spot once the green flag fell, to second place starter Forsberg, who regained the position Pittman took from him in the dash on the opening lap.

Johnson charged from his fourth starting position early, quickly making his way to the second position just behind Forsberg, after he passed Pittman on lap four.

Johnson reeled in Forsberg and started battling with the driver of the PitStopUSA/Autism Awareness No. 7C. The back-and-forth duel for the top position lasted 10 laps, with Johnson finally overtaking Forsberg on lap 14.

As the leaders hit slower lapped traffic, Johnson padded his lead on the rest of the field, but a caution near the halfway point brought both Forsberg and Pittman to his rear bumper.

On the ensuing restart, Johnson pulled away again as Forsberg lost a position to both Pittman and race promoter Sweet, who cracked the top three for the first time all night.

Sweet’s time in the top three was short lived as another local California driver, Kyle Hirst from Paradise, Calif., rocketed from his 10th starting position to the top three with less than 15 laps remaining.

Much like Sweet, Hirst’s time in the top three was short lived as he blew a tire causing a late race restart with only five laps remaining.

Unfortunately, the caution for Hirst was not the final caution of the night.

Just before the leaders took the white flag, Joey Saldana brought out the final caution, setting up a green-white-checkered finish between Johnson, Pittman and Sweet, who had reclaimed his podium position.

On the final restart, Sweet slipped off the track allowing Forsberg around him for the third position.

At the front, Pittman could not muscle his way around Johnson, who proved to be too fast for the rest of the field as he dominated the majority of the race, leading 26 laps en route to claiming the victory at Placerville.

“I had no clue [how fast we were],” Johnson said. “But I knew if we were racing with Andy [Forsberg] then we were pretty good, because I watch a lot of video, and Andy’s pretty good at this type of racing.

“It’s all about pacing yourself. You watch Donny Schatz pace himself, his fastest laps come at the end of the race so at the beginning of the race I paced myself and shopped around, then I got the and tried not to make mistakes.”

Pittman recorded his second runner-up finish in-a-row, finishing second to Donny Schatz on the final night at Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday before finishing second to Johnson tonight.

“You couldn’t have scripted a better finish than that one tonight,” Pittman said. “Starting on the pole you want to win but for [Jason Johnson] to come back and win and me to finish second…It was a lot of fun to come back to a racetrack that we both had a bad night, and both got hurt, and come back and run strong.

“Our goals weren’t too high coming in here tonight. My goal was to see more of the track than I did from the Placerville hospital, so luckily we achieved that and finished second. But congrats to Jason [Johnson], he has definitely been fast this year. He has probably been the most improved and they’re in the hunt every night, so it was a great win for that team, and a good run for us.”

Forsberg brought home a third place finish after being one of the fastest cars all night and contending for the victory early in the feature.

“We were all working today until about noon so we were able to come out here today and run with the Outlaws – these guys are pros,” Forsberg said. “Am I a little disappointed I didn’t win? Of course…We’ve been here twice and been in contention twice, so I don’t know what else to say, other than I am happy to be in third place.

“It sure broke my heart to see Brad [Sweet] drive off the track and let me by him, it was definitely nice of him.”

The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series head home for the Easter weekend before hitting the road again for the Ocean Outlaw Showdown presented by Budweiser at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif. on Friday April 1.
