JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS met with media and discussed his success at Texas Motor Speedway, what he expects with the new downforce package on Saturday night, and more. Full Transcript:

YOU ARE BRINGING BACK THE YELLOW NUMBERS ON YOUR CAR THIS WEEK AND YOU ALSO HAVE SOMETHING GOING ON WITH THE ROCKETS TO RACECARS. WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT?
“We’ve got a lot going on this weekend and I’m very excited to have the yellow back on the car. We ran it once last year in honor of Jeff Gordon’s final race, and the fans have been speaking loudly through the social media channels. And the message was heard, so this is just another example of how social media really drives things that exist in our world today. So, I’m excited to have the yellow #48 back on the car. Pro Stock champ Erica Enders returns to Sportsman roots this weekend

Pro Stock champ Erica Enders returns
to Sportsman roots this weekend
BELLE ROSE, La. (April 7) — Two-time Pro Stock world champion Erica Enders will return to her racing roots this weekend behind the wheel of the ORTEQ Energy Technologies Super Gas car at the NHRA Division 4 race at No Problem Raceway Park.

Before moving to the professional ranks, Enders raced Super Gas and won an NHRA national event in Houston in 2004. She’ll be driving for car owners Buddy Wood and Cody Ortowski this weekend in the first of several Sportsman races she’ll compete in this season.

“Fortunately, this race fell on an off weekend for us, so I’m able to drive,” Enders said. “Buddy Wood and Cody Ortowski have set me up with a great race car, and (crew chief) Cody Wampler will be setting it up for us this weekend, so we’ll definitely have a chance.

“I’m really excited. No Problem is one of the tracks I grew up at because it’s so close to Houston and we raced there a bunch. I can just drive up there from New Orleans, so it feels really comfortable.”

Enders is coming off a semifinal finish in Pro Stock at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning her second-round race on a holeshot. She had reaction times of .006, .009, and .021 in Las Vegas, and she’ll need similar lights in the cutthroat Sportsman class.

“I’m sure everyone will bring their A-game to the starting line,” Enders said. “I’ll try my best to hold them off and go some rounds. It’s been 12 years since I’ve raced Super Gas, and like anything else, to be good at something you need to do it a lot, but it’s not like I haven’t been drag racing.

“We’ll get some test runs in (Thursday) and then get after it Friday. Hopefully, it all comes back to me really fast. I’m pretty confident it will.”

Wood and Wampler will race alongside Enders as her teammates this weekend.

“Both Buddy and Cody (Wampler) are racing, so our pit will stay busy,” Enders said. “It’ll be fun. That’s really my biggest goal, to have some fun and get back to my roots. I’m also excited to spend the weekend with Stan and Sheila Mae Holt, my longtime friends from Houston who own Lupe Tortilla Mexican Restaurants. They’ve been with me since I started racing, and it’ll be fun to race with them.”

BRIAN VICKERS, NO. 14 TAXACT MILITARY FILES FREE CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) and discussed his outlook for the weekend at TMS, the importance of being in the car for consecutive races and many other topics. Full Transcript:

ON YOUR FINISH AT MARTINSVILLE LAST WEEKEND, CAN YOU PUT IT INTO PERSPECTIVE HOW MUCH IT HAS TAKEN TO GET TO THAT POINT? NOT RUNNING EVERY WEEK MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT. BUT, CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE SINCE YOU’VE BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE CAR OVER THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS?
“Last weekend we had a great run. You always want more. We wanted to win the race. We had a great car. We weren’t quite as happy with it in the race as we were in practice. We had a different tire batch code and it seemed to affect the handling a little bit. But we made a lot of progress through the race and had a good finish. It is a challenge, you know, not being in the car every week; although it is kind of nice, at the same time (laughs). It’s certainly an added challenge. But, as you guys know, everyone in this room pretty much is on the circuit and understands the grind of the length of our season. But the last three weeks I think, have been great, working with (crew chief) Mike (Bugarewicz) kind of continually, and the whole team, and really building momentum we need to put a car in Victory Lane. I feel like we’ve done it in the last few weeks. Martinsville showed that. I feel like we have a good car coming here to Texas and hopefully we can build on that and take a seventh and turn it into a win or a top 5.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Texas–Brian Vickers

Las Vegas (April 3, 2016) – A semifinal appearance by Elite Motorsports driver Erica Enders and her Mopar Performance Dodge Dart GT at the 17th annual National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Nationals might not be nearly as good as a visit to the winner’s circle, but it does feels like a small victory for the two-time defending Pro Stock world champion after a rough start to the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. LAS VEGAS — At the close of the 17th annual DENSO Spark Plug NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway John Force Racing held onto the points lead in Top Fuel and Funny Car while John Force raced to the semifinals and moved up to the No. 2 position in the Funny Car point standings.

The PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car started the day with a tough match-up but advanced to the second round with a win over Matt Hagan. John Force took a reaction time advantage and raced to the win light with a winning time of 4.059 seconds at 300.40 mph against Hagan’s 4.061 seconds, 308.07 mph pass.

In the quarterfinals Force had to race teammate and daughter Courtney Force and it was one of the closest races of the day. Both JFR drivers had excellent reaction times and the PEAK Chevy barely nosed out the Traxxas Chevy Funny Car at the finish line 3.991 to 3.996 seconds. Erica Enders storms to Las Vegas semifinal with Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge
LAS VEGAS (April 3) — That’s more like it.

After three untimely first-round exits in the first three races of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season, two-time Pro Stock champion Erica Enders stormed to the semifinals of the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals on Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“You find out what real champions are made of when you have to go through a little bit of adversity,” Enders said. “It makes you dig deeper and want it more. I don’t know we could possibly want it more than we already do, but my guys are amazing.

“It was really nice to go rounds. It felt like it was back to normal. We’re used to going deep into the race on Sunday, and we’re going to get back there. We just need a little bit more time. We certainly made strides in the right direction with our engine-development program. We have work to do, but a semifinal appearance here in Las Vegas was definitely awesome.” Continue reading Erica Enders storms to Las Vegas semifinal with Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge

Honda Racing–Hunter-Reay, Rahal Shine for Honda at Phoenix

Hunter-Reay, Rahal Shine for Honda at Phoenix
• Outstanding start, re-starts highlight Hunter-Reay’s run
• Rahal makes largest gain of the night to finish fifth
• Ill-timed caution flags cost Hunter-Reay, Andretti and Rossi

An inspiring drive from Ryan Hunter-Reay Saturday night at Phoenix International Raceway saw poor reward for his efforts at the Desert Diamond West Valley Phoenix Grand Prix, while Graham Rahal capitalized on every opportunity to produce a top-five finish in the first oval race of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

A likely top-three finish for Hunter-Reay was stymied by caution flags that twice waved just after he had completed scheduled pit stops, dropping him well back in the field each time as his competitors took advantage of the yellows to make their own stops. The poorly-timed cautions negated an aggressive race start for Hunter-Reay that saw the Andretti Autosport driver gain five positions in the opening lap. Hunter-Reay continued to fight back throughout the 250-lap contest, making multiple passes for position on each succeeding re-start and surviving a late-race brush with the wall to finish 10th. Quarterfinal Finish for Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson

Las Vegas, N.V. (April 3, 2016) – Allen Johnson drove his Marathon Petroleum Corporation/J&J Racing Pro Stock Dodge Dart GT to the second round of eliminations at the 17th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals.

In his 460th raceday start, Johnson qualified No. 10 spot which gave him a first round matchup against Alex Laughlin. Laughlin left the starting line first but Johnson’s Marathon Petroleum Dodge powered over Laughlin to take the win. Johnson clocked in with a 6.818, 203.80 while Laughlin shook the tires and crossed the finish line at 18.813, 31.25.

The quarterfinal round paired 2012 NHRA Mello Yello Pro Stock World Champion Johnson with fellow Pro Stock World Champion Greg Anderson. Johnson ran a solid 6.754, 204.45 but wasn’t able to out power Anderson’s 6.725, 205.66.

“We’re getting better and better every race,” noted Johnson. We need a few more ponies (horsepower) and we’ve got some things working at the shop right now that’ll come into play the next few weeks.”

Johnson plans to test the new technology in Charlotte at zMAX Dragway the week before Lowes Foods NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

“We’ve still got a little work to do. The team is still learning but I think we’ll be reaching our pinnacle soon.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH DENSO SPARK PLUGS NHRA NATIONALS PRO STOCK WINNER JASON LINE, KB RACING, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS
HOW HARD IS IT TO TUNE AND DRIVE SAME TIME?
“Well, I like to keep it real. It has been a great day. It is tough. It is difficult, but everybody on our team works hard. I want to thank Coca Cola Company of course. Finley Chevrolet. They provide us with great vehicles. Of course we love Chevrolet. And all the fans for coming out. I want to say congrats to Bo (Butner) for making the finals.”
YOU HAVE MADE FOUR STRAIGHT FINALS, WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO SLOW DOWN?
“Never I hope. Hopefully it continues like this for the rest of the year. But this is a great start. We’ve never had a start this good, even back in the heyday. It feels really, really good. None of this would be possible without Summit Racing Equipment. I love them. I even love Jim Greenly. He’s tough on me, but I love him. It is great to be part of their team.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NHRA–Las Vegas

Austin Dillon Comes from Deep in the Field to Earn Career-Best Short Track Finish in No. 3 Dow Chevrolet

“I was pretty much distraught Friday after qualifying 29th because we put a lot of focus into qualifying here and talked about where I had messed up in previous races. I backed it up and messed it up again. I came back Saturday and regrouped as a team and decided to work on our car and work on me. The race today was fun. To start 29th and to drive up through there like we did is a testament to these guys and effort they put in. The Dow Chevrolet seemed to race well. The pit crew did a great job. We broke a jack and were able to recover from that. A lot of things happened today. It was just a career day for me and everyone on the Dow Chevy team here at Martinsville Speedway. I’m looking forward upcoming races. I learned a lot today.”

Blaney Pays His Dues At Martinsville, Moves To 15th In Points

April 3, 2016

Martinsville Speedway, the tough, tight half-mile oval, is the one place on the Sprint Cup circuit where a first-time driver can either earn the respect of veterans or spend quite a while paying the price for not doing so.

In Sunday’s STP 500 at Martinsville, rookie Ryan Blaney did exactly what his Motorcraft/Quick Lane team expected of him. He drove a race in which he ran every lap – one of the pre-race goals – and did so in a manner that showed respect to the drivers around him. And despite a late-race penalty for a pit crew/pit road violation on the day’s final stop, he brought his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion home in 19th place, and with it moved up two spots in the Sprint Cup standings to 15th. Despite tough Vegas weekend, Jeg Coughlin Jr. remains optimistic

Despite tough Vegas weekend,
Jeg Coughlin Jr. remains optimistic
LAS VEGAS (April 3) — A difficult weekend, finished off by an early exit on race day, hasn’t dampened Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s enthusiasm in his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team.

Coughlin qualified No. 13 and fell in the first round of the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals on Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to Elite Motorsports teammate Drew Skillman, but the five-time Pro Stock champion remains optimistic about the rest of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

“We know it’s all here,” Coughlin said. “I’ve got faith in the Elite Performance group. We’ve got a pile of parts we’ll take back with us to the shop in Oklahoma, and they’ll be like CSI investigators, taking a look at this stuff piece by piece and part by part. They’re very intimate with it, and I know they’ll come up with a solution.”

Coughlin’s Dodge took a sharp right turn at the hit against Skillman, and though he steered it back into the groove, Coughlin’s run of 6.795 at 204.01 mph wasn’t enough. Skillman, the No. 4 qualifier, made a pass of 6.729 at 204.88 mph to get the win.

That pass came after a weekend where Coughlin was unable to make full passes in two of the four qualifying sessions.

“We hustled from the time we showed up here on Friday until right now,” Coughlin said. “The team was behind the eight ball as we struggled with some engine issues. We just couldn’t quite overcome them. It put us in a tough spot in the ladder across from our teammate, Drew Skillman.”

Coughlin now becomes a cheerleader for Elite teammate Erica Enders.

“She was fortunate to get by Round 1 at this point,” Coughlin said. “Hopefully, she’ll go some more rounds. It really could be anyone’s race today. The track is going to get tricky, and we’ve got a crafty bunch in the crew and in the crew chief roles, so we’ll see if we can’t cheer her into the winner’s circle.”
