FIVE QUESTIONS WITH SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT/KB RACING CAMARO SS NHRA PRO STOCK POINTS LEADER JASON LINE:

KB Racing teammates Jason Line and Greg Anderson, who drive the Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS, have dominated the early going of the Pro Stock class of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season. They have split the wins in the four events and enter the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods at zMAX Dragway first and second in the standings.

Line, who also has posted two runner-up finishes to Anderson, enters his 289th career race with 39 Pro Stock victories and 43 second-place finishes. He’s been the No. 1 qualifier twice already this season after recording three top qualifying spots in all of 2015. In the spring Charlotte event last year, Line set the national Pro Stock elapsed time record with a 6.455-secnd pass. He was the No. 3 qualifier but fell in the second round, and is looking for his first win in the seventh annual event. Continue reading CHEVROLET RACING IN NHRA NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

Matt Tifft Joins Red Horse Racing for Several Races

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 20, 2016) – Up-and-coming driver Matt Tifft will join the Red Horse Racing stable for several races beginning at Kansas Speedway. Nineteen-year-old Tifft has 15 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts under his belt, recording six top-10 finishes. He also has four NASCAR XFINITY Series starts with one top-10.

“We’re very glad to bring Matt on board for the next few races,” said team owner Tom DeLoach. “He’s a great young driver with a lot of potential and I think we can help him gain some more experience and continue to improve.”

Tifft will pilot the No. 11 Toyota Tundra at Kansas Speedway, Dover International Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and possibly additional races with veteran crew chief Scott Zipadelli leading the team.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to join Red Horse Racing,” said Tifft. “I’m looking forward to working with (teammate) Timothy (Peters) and (crew chief) Scott Zipadelli on our No. 11 Toyota Tundra team. We’re going to some tracks I really enjoy and I’m confident we’re going to have some speed and we’ll go and try to get some really good runs.”

KKR wins four out of last five World of Outlaw Races

It’s been a red-hot week for both KKR teams. Brad and Daryn both have won two races each in the last five events, with Daryn grabbing back-to-back victories after a hard crash racing for the lead at Bakersfield.

Brad maintains a 93-point lead in the standings over Shane Stewart, while Daryn maintains his spot in fourth.

John Force Racing Expecting Four-Wide Nationals to Thrill Fans

JOHN FORCE EXPECTS FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS TO THRILL FANS

CHARLOTTE, NC (April 20, 2016) — The winningest driver in NHRA history knows that the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods is a completely different “animal.” Even with 143 Funny Car wins to his credit John Force’s lone win at the Four-Wide coming at the inaugural event in 2010 still sticks in his head.

“I was so confused at that first Four-Wide Nationals. I went up to the starting line on my scooter every chance I got to just watch how the Christmas Tree worked. I was up there for Pro Stock Motorcycle and Pro Stock just to get a feel for how that whole deal worked. I raced in the exhibition race the year before but until you make that first pass with three other Funny Cars all around you, you don’t know what to expect,” said Force.

Fans can expect to see Force along with the three other John Force Racing race cars continue to have early season success as the fifth stop of the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series gets started on Friday with Nitro qualifying at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at zMAX Dragway. Force is currently second in the Funny Car point standings trailing only his teammate and recent Gatornationals winner Robert Hight, driver of the Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro Funny Car. SUMMIT RACING TEAM LOOKS FOR WIN FIVE AT THE FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

SUMMIT RACING TEAM LOOKS FOR WIN FIVE AT
THE FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS
NHRA Race at zMAX Dragway Home Event for KB Racing

Mooresville, NC (April 20, 2016) With two wins apiece for Pro Stock drivers Greg Anderson and Jason Line, Team Summit Racing looks to clinch win five this weekend at their home track zMax Dragway.

Anderson and Line won’t just be racing for thousands of NHRA fans; plenty of their family and friends will be sitting in the front row for the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods.

Some drivers might feel extra pressure racing in front of their hometown crowd, but not Anderson. “We love racing in front of our family and friends,” Anderson said. “Most of them don’t go on the road and watch us, so this is their chance to cheer for us and even get their hands a little dirty in the pits.” Continue reading SUMMIT RACING TEAM LOOKS FOR WIN FIVE AT THE FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

PLENTY ON THE LINE FOR FOUR-TIME PRO STOCK WORLD CHAMPION GREG ANDERSON AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

PLENTY ON THE LINE FOR FOUR-TIME PRO STOCK WORLD CHAMPION GREG ANDERSON AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

CONCORD, N.C. – It was not the start four-time Pro Stock world champion Greg Anderson expected, but it is one he will gladly take.

There were vast changes in Pro Stock heading into the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season and the veteran Anderson admitted to at least some trepidation for his KB Racing Summit Racing Equipment team.

But while Anderson’s Chevrolet Camaro looks much different, with the new look cars featuring fuel-injected engines, shorter wheelie bars, flat hoods and a 10,500 RPM rev-limiter, the early results have been very much the same.

Anderson already has two wins this season – longtime teammate Jason Line has the other two – and he will look to make it three at this weekend’s seventh annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods at zMAX Dragway. A two-time winner at the unique race, Anderson can also become the first three-time winner at the one-of-a-kind event.

It’s not the only noteworthy achievement on the line this weekend, either. By qualifying for Sunday’s eliminations, Anderson will move past the legendary Warren Johnson for the longest career qualifying streak in Pro Stock with 304 straight races, which would put him second in NHRA history behind only John Force’s 395 consecutive qualifying streak from 1988-2007.

“We’re way, way, way pleasantly surprised and not just the fact that we got to Pomona and had a slight edge, but that we’ve been able to hang onto it for four races,” Anderson said. “When you shake up the deck like that someone is going to come out with an advantage. We feel very fortunate and lucky for that, and when we’ve had the performance advantage we have parlayed it into race wins. That has been really important.”

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Larry Morgan (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (PSM) were last year’s winners of the distinctive event. The race will be televised on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), with qualifying highlights on April 23 at 10 p.m. and finals coverage on April 24 at 4:30 p.m. The event is the fifth of 24 races during the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season and the KB Racing team of Anderson, Line and Bo Butner has had the clear advantage thus far. Line is first in points, Anderson is second and Butner is third, and they have combined to claim the top three spots in qualifying at each race.

As impressive as that has been, Anderson, who has 80 career wins, knows it took a tremendous amount of work in the off-season to get there. He also knows the advantage won’t last forever in a Pro Stock class loaded with talent.

“When we first started we were so far off,” Anderson said of the changes. “We did a lot of different things and tried a lot of different parts. We have a complete room full of parts that didn’t work out. We made some big gains but we had to. It’s a progressive deal and there are a lot of gains still to be made. I still feel like we’re just scratching the surface and the landscape in the class will look a lot different in a month. We know we have to keep going forward and we know there’s a lot left to be learned.”

The challenges at the Four-Wide Nationals are completely unique, but Anderson has been able to master it, winning the event in 2011 and 2012, and advancing to the final group of four in two other years. Anderson has also taken advantage of some of the unique nuances of the race, such as advancing in eliminations even when he when he didn’t cross the finish line first.

In fact, Anderson is one of only two drivers (Robert Hight being the other) to have won the four-wide event with second-place finishes in the first two rounds, only finishing first in the final round.

“I can remember losing twice before I won and it’s just a crazy scenario,” Anderson said. “You get two runner-ups and then a win. You almost feel a little guilty that you’re moving on. The whole deal is so different and as a driver, it completely blows your mind. It’s such a challenge and so different. You have three cars that can whip you and no round is easy.”

But those moments at the KB Racing team’s home track have brought out the best in Anderson, and he will have to rise to the occasion once more this weekend.

Along with dealing with teammates Line and Butner, Anderson will have to ward off the likes of two-time defending world champion Erica Enders, five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr., Drew Skillman, Allen Johnson, Vincent Nobile, Chris McGaha, Shane Gray and Alex Laughlin. But as long as his Camaro continues to perform at the level it has all season, Anderson knows he will be a threat to win at every event.

“I think the confidence has been key, just knowing that every time you go up there you’re going to have a great car,” Anderson said. “I’m the guy that loves to have that confidence of knowing my car is going to be great and I just have to do my job. To be able to race more relaxed and not have to do anything I’m not comfortable with, it seems to work best for me.”

Reigning Top Fuel world champion Brown, who won the most recent race in Las Vegas, will be looking for his third consecutive victory at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. J.R. Todd, who set the 3.713-second track record at the race last year, season-opening Winternationals winner Steve Torrence, eight-time world champ Tony Schumacher, recent first-time winners Leah Pritchett and Brittany Force, Doug Kalitta and Clay Millican are among the top contenders for the Wally trophy.

In Funny Car, Beckman ended his 54-race winless streak in Funny Car with his victory last year. The victory provided the momentum he needed to earn seven wins in the season and finish runner-up behind Del Worsham. Winternationals winner Ron Capps, two-time Four-Wide Nationals winner and current points leader Hight, Courtney Force, John Force, Tim Wilkerson and Alexis DeJoria, who won in Las Vegas, will try to prevent Beckman from a second straight victory.

The NHRA Four-Wide Nationals is the second stop on the Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule. Hines, who won the event last year by outrunning three-time world champion Eddie Krawiec, went on to claim the 2015 series title. Krawiec comes in as the points leader after winning the Gatornationals and will face off against the likes of Hector Arana Jr., who was the No. 1 qualifier and also set both ends of the track record at last year’s Four-Wide Nationals, Hector Arana Sr. and two-time world champion Matt Smith.

As always, fans will have the opportunity to interact with their favorite drivers as they’re granted an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. This unique opportunity in motorsports gives fans direct access to the teams, allowing them to see firsthand the highly-skilled mechanics service their hot rods between rounds, and enjoy some cherished face time with their favorite NHRA drivers.

The 2015 NHRA Four-Wide Nationals will also feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Mello Yello Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22 and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, April 23, at 2 and 4 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 24.

Wood Brothers’ Short Track Success With Blaney Reminiscent of The Kyle Petty Era

Wood Brothers’ Short Track Success With Blaney Reminiscent of The Kyle Petty Era

April 19, 2016

As Ryan Blaney and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team head to Richmond International Raceway, it will be a first for Blaney in a Sprint Cup car. For the Wood Brothers, it will be their first visit to the track since 2008, and team co-owner Eddie Wood says he feels like it’s 1985 again.

In 1985, like this season, the Woods were coming off a partial Sprint Cup schedule and going racing full time. Just like the present day with youthful Blaney, they had another youngster, Kyle Petty, then age 25, at the wheel to start the 1985 season. Both are third-generation racers and both developed into perfect fits for the Woods, NASCAR’s longest tenured race team. Allen Johnson Apt to Turn Challenges into Opportunities at NHRA Four-Wide Nationals

Allen Johnson Apt to Turn Challenges into Opportunities at NHRA Four-Wide Nationals

GREENEVILLE, T.N. (April 19, 2016) – Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson heads to the Sixth annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods for the fifth of 24 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. The uniquely-formatted race held at zMAX Dragway is a favorite among NHRA fans and Johnson hopes to ink his name in the history books with a win at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

Last year, Johnson reset his career best elapsed time (6.463-seconds) and mph (214.42) at this event. Since the switch to fuel injection, Johnson knows the likeliness of advancing his career best is unlikely but he still anticipates a fast weekend for the Pro Stock class overall.

“With the weather as it is right now, I think it’ll be fairly fast,” predicted Johnson. “With the new fuel injection, we may see a 6.55 [elapsed time] if the air allows for it.”

With two weeks off since the 17th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas, Johnson was able to utilize the time off and go testing at zMAX Dragway to prepare for this weekend’s highly anticipated race.

“We had two good days of testing in Charlotte last week,” he attested. “The track was awesome and I think we made a little bit of progress. We’ve also been doing a lot of dyno work; we’re working our tails off to catch the front teams.”

Giovanni Scelzi Scores Fourth-Place Finish during Sprint Car Debut

Inside Line Promotions – HANFORD, Calif. (April 18, 2016) – Giovanni Scelzi fulfilled a dream on Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway, where he made his winged sprint car debut.

“Todd Ventura really calmed me down,” he said. “He said, ‘It’s your first race and you have nothing to prove. Just get your feet wet and get into a rhythm.'”

Scelzi, who was driving for Roth Motorsports, did exactly that throughout the night. He qualified fourth quickest and finished where he started – third – in a heat race to lock into the dash.

Scelzi redrew the No. 2 during the random dash redraw and he ran second in the race to start the main event on the outside of the front row. Continue reading Giovanni Scelzi Scores Fourth-Place Finish during Sprint Car Debut

Bottom Lane Blues Leave Blaney 11th at Bristol

April 17, 2016

Ordinarily, running in fifth position with 10 laps to go in a Sprint Cup race would be a good thing. But for Ryan Blaney and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon, that odd-numbered position meant having to restart on the inside lane. It was a big disadvantage, leading to lost positions on two late-race restarts with Blaney finishing 11th on a day that otherwise was a strong one for his Motorcraft/Quick Lane team.

“It was good until the end,” Blaney said. “We should have run fifth, easy.”

He said Bristol’s bottom lane just isn’t the place to be. Continue reading Wood Brothers Racing–Bottom Lane Blues Leave Blaney 11th at Bristol

• Late-race charge nets fifth for Sato, Honda and A.J. Foyt Racing
• Hinchcliffe rebounds from early-season disappointment to run eighth
• Caution-free race leads to record event

A late-race charge from Takuma Sato netted Honda and the A.J. Foyt Racing veteran fifth place Sunday at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, as a caution-free race around the Southern California street circuit resulted in a record race pace and negatively affected the race strategies of several Honda teams.

The race would run caution-free for the first time since 1989 and only the fourth time in Long Beach history, resulting in a record race pace of just over 100 mph. It also was the first caution-free Indy car race anywhere since Mid-Ohio in 2013. Continue reading Sato Shines for Honda at Long Beach

Austin Dillon Finishes 26th at Bristol Motor Speedway after Sustaining Damage

“Today wasn’t our day, the Bass Pro Shops team worked hard during practice to get the handling right on our Chevrolet and we made a lot of gains. We started the race too tight. Slugger (Labbe, crew chief) made a great call on the first stop and fixed up our handling issues. We just couldn’t get track position on our side today. We got a speeding penalty mid-race that put us further behind, which led to damage and a tire rub from tight racing. We battled hard and just couldn’t luck on our side.”

The No. 27 Tarkett/Menards Team Rallies Late to Finish 15th in Thunder Valley

“My guys fought hard all day to make good adjustments and have fast stops on pit road. We came back from what could have been a bad day. I’m proud of this team. We just couldn’t get the front end to turn for some reason, so we’ll go back and look at those notes on Monday.”

– Paul Menard

Ryan Newman and WIX Filters Team Earn Hard-Fought Ninth-Place Finish at Bristol Motor Speedway

“We overcame a lot today between getting a tire rub in one incident and front-nose damage in another. We stayed focused and dug deep. The biggest challenge for us were restarts on the inside line. It was such a disadvantage starting there. We were very fortunate to take the last two on the high side. I’m very happy all and all. We’re looking forward to going to one of my favorite tracks at Richmond.”
