An interview with Pro Stock winner JASON LINE, KB RACING, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS:

Q: Superman has his kryptonite and this season you’ve had Greg Anderson, but you had none of that in the final. You beat him on a holeshot.

JASON LINE: Finally. He’s gotten the best of me (3 wins to 1 in head-to-head this season) and he’s tough. If there’s somebody I don’t want to race in the final, it’s him. I want to race him because he’s my teammate, but he is tough to beat. We got it done at the Summit race.”

Jeg Coughlin Jr. picks up team morale with round-win in Atlanta

Jeg Coughlin Jr. picks up team
morale with round-win in Atlanta
ATLANTA (May 15) — When a team is struggling, a win — any win — is always good for morale.

That’s one of the big benefits that Jeg Coughlin Jr. was able to deliver to his Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge Dart team on Sunday when he beat Drew Skillman in the first round of the 36th annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Coughlin snapped a three-race streak in which he had lost in the first round — twice to Skillman — with a pass of 6.648 seconds at 208.17 mph. Coughlin had gone red against Skillman in Houston. Continue reading Jeg Coughlin Jr. picks up team morale with round-win in Atlanta

Allen Johnson Propels Marathon Petroleum Dodge to Semifinal Round at NHRA Southern Nationals

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 15, 2016) – Raceday at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals manifested a semifinal round appearance for the Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson. After qualifying in the top half of the field, Johnson went to the third round before his raceday efforts were halted by eventual event winner Jason Line.

First round, Johnson had lane choice over Vincent Nobile. Johnson ripped the early numbers on that pass and crossed the finish line with a 6.600-second pass at 209.79 against Vincent’s equally quick 6.602, 208.78. The margin of victory in the first round was .0118-seconds with Johnson taking the win. Continue reading Allen Johnson Propels Marathon Petroleum Dodge to Semifinal Round at NHRA Southern Nationals

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – Finished 2nd
WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE AT THE END?
“We were really good. We were better than Matt (Kenseth) there. A lot of good cars got wrecked which was nice and I knew I was going to be the car to probably beat. I got to second there on the restart and just tried to be patient. I could see Matt was pretty loose in front of me. I was just waiting for him to make a mistake and he did make a couple of mistakes, but it’s so hard to pass somebody on the bottom here because they can suck down on your door on exit and slow you down. I was probably a little too patient in the beginning and allowed Chase (Elliott) to get close to us and actually get by me. I don’t remember how I got back by him, but I did get back by him and we raced pretty hard there for a few laps and Matt got out a good bit. I didn’t think I would catch him, but I got another shot at him at the end and was trying to do all I could to pass him without getting into him. Matt, except for a couple of instances last year, he is probably the cleanest driver out here. I wanted to race him with all that respect and felt like I did a good job. I probably could have got into him in the middle of (Turns) 1 and 2 there once and maybe got by him, but I didn’t want to do that. Looking back maybe I should have because I could be in the Chase right now, but we will just keep working hard. We are getting some really good cars built at our shop now. We struggled to start the season, but Jamie (McMurray) and I both have been pretty fast here the last few weeks. Hopefully, we can keep it rolling. I know we have a new car for next week and the (Coca-Cola) 600. Try and put it all together and get into Victory Lane.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Dover–Post Race

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS: Involved in 18-car accident on Lap 355
AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE SOMETHING WAS WRONG?
“As soon as I went from second and tried to go to third, I kind of got up into the neutral gate of the transmission and didn’t even go to third. It stopped before it ever went to third. And then I tried fourth and third and fourth and eventually I got hit from behind. There was a long pause there where I was trying to, I thought maybe I missed a shift; but it wouldn’t go in gear. Martin (Truex, Jr.) was good and patient with me. He gave me a couple of opportunities to try to find a gear and it just locked out and wouldn’t go into gear for some reason. It was still that way at the end and I couldn’t drive the car and I don’t think I’m all that damaged, but unfortunately I lost a shot at winning and I hate to see all those cars tore up.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Dover–Post Race

Erica Enders’ best pass of the weekend negated by dodgy Atlanta track
ATLANTA (May 15) — Reigning back-to-back Pro Stock champion Erica Enders knew she left on first-round opponent Chris McGaha, and as she went through the gears of her Elite Motorsports/Mopar Dodge Dart a big smile started to cross her face.

Then, in an instant, it was gone, as a big bump in her lane upset her race car enough that it shot towards the centerline. Although the 21-time national event winner didn’t give up on the run, the tire spin she encountered out of the racing groove allowed McGaha to slip past her and take the win by .008-second. Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson No. 6 Headed into Raceday at NHRA Southern Nationals

Marathon Petroleum’s Allen Johnson No. 6 Headed into Raceday at NHRA Southern Nationals

COMMERCE, Ga. (May 14, 2016) – Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson qualified No. 6 at the 36th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Johnson will have lane choice over Vincent Nobile in the first round of eliminations on Sunday morning.

On Friday’s first session, Johnson started the weekend off with a solid 6.670-second pass at 207.11 mph. Johnson returned for Friday’s night session and improved his qualifying effort with a 6.649, 208.46, putting him in the No. 6 spot and the top half of the field.

Saturday’s hot weather made track conditions tricky but Johnson and the Marathon team were able to get down Atlanta Dragway with a conservative 6.725, 205.76. He came back for the final round of qualifying and crossed the finish line with a 6.687, 207.30.

“You know, we started out good,” said Johnson. “The track got a little challenging today and we didn’t make a good run in Q3 at all. Then, I made some mistakes in my driving in Q4 but we’ve got a good car for tomorrow.”

Johnson will enter into raceday with his choice of lane over Vincent Nobile in the first round. Johnson knows how important lane choice will be on his path to the winner circle this weekend in his Dodge Dart.

“If the track remains how it has been all weekend, lane choice is going to be very important,” he stated. “The lanes look pretty even but tomorrow is supposed to be a lot cooler with cloud cover so anytime you get lane choice tomorrow, it has the potential to be very significant.”

ATLANTA (May 14) — JEGS.com driver Troy Coughlin Sr. hit a bump in the road — literally — that derailed his shot at winning the NHRA Southern Nationals on Saturday at Atlanta Dragway.

After qualifying No. 2 for the J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series race presented by Pro Line Racing and FuelTech, Coughlin was confident heading into eliminations, but after a fast start in his first-round race with Kevin Fiscus, Coughlin hit a bump on the track that his JEGS.com Corvette didn’t like. Coughlin had to pedal the car, but Fiscus was already past him and heading to the win light. Continue reading Troy Coughlin Sr. hits a bump in the road in first-round loss in Atlanta

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 MENARDS TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, RACE WINNER: TALK ABOUT THE IN-LAP AND THE OUT-LAP AROUND THE LAST STOP. HOW FAST WAS THAT? “I went faster than any other lap on the in-lap. Kyle Moyer (team manager and car strategist) told me that I had to go. I knew it was going to be the chance to get back in the lead. The pit sequence was so important. With the temperature being so low, it was very difficult on the out-lap to get the tires going. I knew this was my chance so I drove as hard as I could. I drove into pitlane like a rally car so it but worked out! The pit crew did a fantastic job on that stop. That was an easy last stint. Thank you so much! I’m so glad for Menards. They just joined Team Penske. Obviously, Team Penske is the best in the business but having this livery and being the driver of that livery is very special. Strong, Top-Five Run Derailed at Dover International Speedway for the No. 2 Richmond/Menards Team

“I have to thank my guys for their hard work this weekend in Dover. We had to roll out the backup car after an issue during practice on Friday, and they worked nonstop to get the car ready for final practice. For a backup car, we had a lot of speed during qualifying, and I knew we’d have a shot at a top-five finish. The car was loose, but manageable during the first half of the race and the guys made a track bar adjustment that set us up well for the remaining laps. Not long after pit stops, I felt something break in the right front and had to come down pit road so the guys could determine what happened. Once we got back on track, I think we were nine laps down without many laps left, so we just survived to the end. I know Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and the guys will go back and try to figure out what happened. I’m looking forward to my next race with this Richmond/Menards team in Pocono.”

Five-time Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. says progress being made in Elite/Mopar camp

Five-time Pro Stock champ
Jeg Coughlin Jr. says progress
being made in Elite/Mopar camp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ATLANTA (May 14) — Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. locked up the
No. 8 qualifying position at this weekend’s 36th annual NHRA Southern Nationals
with a solid Friday night pass of 6.686 seconds at 206.86 mph at Atlanta Dragway.
It’s the fourth time in seven races that Coughlin qualified eighth or better in
the eliminations field.
“The team tested again in Oklahoma before heading this way as we continue to try
and clean up some of the things that have been nagging on us, and I think we’ve
seen a little tick of improvement here,” Coughlin said. “We missed a chance in
Q1 when a ground wire shook loose on the burnout and we couldn’t make a pass, but
we came right back in the evening session and posted that 6.686, which ended up
being our best run.
“Looking at the data we felt we could massage at least three- or four-hundreds out
of the tune-up, but we came out here today to just a completely different racetrack
with increased temperatures that just negated any chance of improving on that 6.68.
In hindsight, we’d love to have the Q1 run back because for sure Q2 would’ve been
better but that didn’t happen.”
Despite Saturday’s heat, Coughlin’s Magneti Marelli offered by Mopar/JEGS.com Dodge
Dart posted runs of 6.723 at 206.39 mph and 6.705 at 205.88 mph, pleasing the 76-time
national event winner.
“Today turned out to be what we expect tomorrow will look like, so you can look
at this as two chances to make race day-type runs,” Coughlin said. “The Mopar felt
pretty good both times with consistent times, and the second run today was even
a bit of a handful that probably could have been even quicker, so we like our chances
at turning on win lights tomorrow.”
Normally, a No. 8 qualifying effort would afford Coughlin the luxury of lane choice
in Round 1, providing NHRA was using the traditional 16-car ladder. This weekend,
however, only 14 Pro Stock cars qualified for the race, so Coughlin is now slated
to run Elite Motorsports teammate Drew Skillman, who qualified seventh with a 6.666
at 207.37 mph.
“I’m not sure lane choice is as big an issue at this track,” Coughlin said. “We
did well in both lanes today, so we’ll just line ’em up and do our best in whatever
lane we end up in tomorrow morning. Skillman is a skillful driver, so we’ll have
a test right from the start.”
FOX Sports 1 will air Saturday qualifying from 10 to 11 p.m. ET and Sunday’s elimination
action from 4:40 to 7:30 p.m. ET.
Five-time Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. locked up the No. 8 qualifying position
at this weekend’s 36th annual NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta with a 6.686 at
206.86 mph.
