WATKINS GLEN, NY (September 3, 2016) – Scott Dixon has had a love affair with Watkins Glen International ever since the four-time and reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion set foot on the grounds in 2005. The driver of the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet reeled off three victories in a row, 2005, 2006 and 2007 at the 3.37-mile/11-turn road course in Watkins Glen, New York.

Penalites Block Honda Qualifying Effort at Watkins Glen
• Aleshin, Hinchcliffe, Rahal, Sato lose advancements due to penalities
• Contested calls affect Honda qualifying results

A.J. Foyt Racing’s Jack Hawksworth continued to impress as the Verizon IndyCar Series returned to Watkins Glen International Raceway, qualifying ninth on Saturday for Sunday’s IndyCar Grand Prix at the Glen, while a series of contentious rulings from race officials prevented other Honda drivers from advancing through the three rounds of knockout qualifying.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ Mikhail Aleshin was sixth fastest in the second round, but was judged to have impeded Juan Pablo Montoya and had his two fastest laps taken away. That ruling dropped Aleshin out of the Fast Six and promoted Will Power into the final group. Continue reading Penalites Block Honda Qualifying Effort at Watkins Glen

We’ve had a bit of a rough year, so it is nice to come back here and perform like this. Tomorrow is going to be a heck of a race. SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3, 2016

SCOTT DIXON, NO. 9 TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING CHEVROLET, won the pole for Sunday’s Grand Prix of the Glen with a track record lap of one minute, 22.5259 seconds/147.008 MPH. It is the second pole of the season for the reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion, and the 25th of his career. Dixon, who bested the previous track record set in 2009 by more than 5.6 seconds/9.351 MPH, led an all-Chevrolet Aero Kit with integrated 2.2 liter V6 engine Firestone Fast Six.

ON HIS QUALIFYING EFFORT: “I’ve got to thank the whole Target crew, the car rolled off extremely fast. We’ve been at the top of the time sheets, at least a good percentage of them this weekend. We’ve had a bit of a rough year, so it is nice to come back here and perform like this. Tomorrow is going to be a heck of a race. Hopefully we can keep this No. 9 Target Chevrolet up front.”

ON ALMOST NOT TRANSFERRING TO FIRESTONE FAST SIX: “I made a couple of mistakes and we had a bit of a miss-shift thing going on especially on the backstretch. That last lap there I had actually lost three tenths. The speed was kind of there but it didn’t hang on as well as we would have hoped. With these cool conditions, we thought the reds were going to be good. Just happy we scraped through on that one. There was definitely a lot of chaos during qualifying with people getting pulled back out of the group that they had transferred into.

“It was hairy man. It was definitely one of those sessions, and seems like we’ve had that a little bit this year. We had that in Toronto as well in group one and two. Group two was a nail biter for us. We had a bit of a miss-shift going on out of one and lost about three tenths on the back straight and I thought we were really going to miss it. It was a crazy session for all with people getting tossed out and stuff. I can’t say thank you enough to Team Target, Verizon, everybody in this series. It has been a great weekend so far. Thank you to everybody at The Glen for having us back. And everyone in IndyCar made this happen. I hope we can comeback many more times.”

Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, qualified 2nd; Sebastien Bourdais, No. 11 Team Hydroxycut KVSH Racing Chevrolet qualified 3rd; Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, qualified 4th; Tony Kanaan, No. 10 NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, qualified 5th and Max Chilton, No. 8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, qualified 6th.

Hawksworth, Rahal Lead Effort Friday at Watkins Glen

Hawksworth, Rahal Lead Effort Friday at Watkins Glen
• Hawksworth runs sixth, Rahal seventh, in IndyCar return to the Glen
• Lap record expected Saturday as times tumble on fresh Watkins Glen pavement

A.J. Foyt Racing’s Jack Hawksworth and Graham Rahal, winner of last weekend’s race in Texas, paced the Honda field Friday in opening practice as the Verizon IndyCar Series returned to the historic Watkins Glen International Raceway for the first time since 2010.

Hawkwsworth ran sixth, and Rahal, seventh. A combination of fresh pavement on the full length of the rolling, 3.37-mile Watkins Glen road course, coupled with increased downforce provided by the IndyCar Series road course aero kits, resulted in lap times some five seconds – more than 10 mph – quicker than the last time the open-wheel racers ran here in 2010.

Activities at Watkins Glen continue Saturday with final practice and qualifying. Sunday’s 60-lap race starts at 2 p.m. EDT, with live network television coverage on the NBC Sports Network.

Jack Hawksworth (#41 A.J. Foyt Racing Honda): “It was a fun day. We hadn’t tested here so we worked our way into it and ran through our plan [for the day]. It was good because we worked systematically. By the end, I think we had a decent understanding of the track. We had really nice conditions, a really cool track, incredibly fast, I’ve never been to a track like this in my entire life. Literally…never! So, so fast and the grip level is incredible. I mean it’s a three and half-mile track and we’re doing 1:23s, I don’t know what the average speed is, but it’s insane. I really enjoyed it, and we did some good work, so we’ll try to continue that tomorrow and see if we can put it together in qualifying.”

Full Transcript:

TALK ABOUT HOW EXCITING IT IS FOR YOU TO HAVE A THROWBACK PAINT SCHEME THIS WEEKEND:
“Well, I have watched over the last couple of years all the different paint schemes that those guys have shown up with and it is always fun to get to Darlington if you haven’t seen anything social media wise of what guys are going to be running for special paint schemes. I’ve been pretty jealous that I haven’t got to be a part of that. Last year, I thought Kyle Larson had the coolest throwback scheme with the Days of Thunder, Kyle Petty, Mello Yellow car. So, we have been working on that. It’s not as easy as just going to a partner and saying we want to do this. You have to be able to still make it work with what they are trying to get out of their partnership. We actually had a meeting a few months ago with McDonald’s and they loved the idea of bringing back a retro paint scheme and something that was really popular at the time. I remember watching that car on TV. It is cool to get to have that on your car and be a part of what Darlington has put together.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Darlington–Jamie McMurray

KEVIN HARVICK TO START FROM POLE POSITION AT DARLINGTON
Qualifying for Southern 500 Cancelled Due to Impending Weather

DARLINGTON, S.C. – September 1, 2016 – With inclement weather on the horizon from Hurricane Hermine, NASCAR officials have decided to cancel all on-track activity scheduled for Friday at Darlington Raceway in anticipations for Sunday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500.

As a result of the cancelation, NASCAR has adjusted the competition schedule and has removed Sprint Cup Series qualifying for this weekend’s 367-lap/501.3-mile event and replaced it with two practice sessions to give driver’s and teams more on-track time to prepare for Sunday night’s race.

The starting grid has been set per the provisions in the NASCAR rulebook. Current year owner’s points determine starting positions in the event that adverse conditions prevent qualifying, thus, 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and current point’s leader, Kevin Harvick, piloting the No. 4 Busch Beer Chevrolet SS, will start from the pole position.

This will be the first time in his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career that Harvick will lead the field to the green flag at Darlington. The Stewart-Haas racing driver earned his first and only Southern 500 victory to date in 2014.

Other Team Chevy drivers starting in the top 10 will be: Kurt Busch, No. 41 Haas Automation/Monster Energy Chevrolet SS – 4th and Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet SS – 9th.

Brad Keselowski (Ford) will start second, Carl Edwards (Toyota) will start third, and Joey Logano (Ford) will start fifth to round out the top five starters.
