SAGE KARAM, CHIP GANASSI RACING VERIZON INDYCAR SERIES DRIVER met with members of the media at Sonoma Raceway. Transcript:

THOUGHTS ON THE LOSS OF VERIZON INDYCAR SERIES DRIVER JUSTIN WILSON LAST WEEK AT POCONO NOTE: KARAM WAS INVOLVED IN A SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT AHEAD OF WILSON ON-TRACK AND SUSTAINED AN INJURY TO HIS FOOT: “It’s been a tough week. This isn’t a good week for racing losing such a great guy. I’ve been working with a psychologist this week. I’ve worked with him in the past and he’s really been there for me this week. It’s been tough on me, but the main thing is Justin’s family. I can’t imagine what they’re going through.”

HAVE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT BEEN DISCERNED: “We looked into the data and did nothing different from the laps before. I was actually in the lead for a few laps so the clean air didn’t catch me by surprise or anything. I made a few adjustments two laps before to give the car a little bit more understeer. Nothing popped out. Nothing on the car broke. I didn’t hit the apron. It was a late corner spin, and when it went it went fast.”

WHAT WAS ADVICE OF PSYCHOLOGIST: “For me, the night time is the worst for me just when you’re sitting there thinking of things. Just getting out of the house and keeping busy is the main thing. I’ve been trying not to spend a lot of alone time, because that’s when I start thinking of things and asking ‘What if?’ ’’

DOES YOU AGE – 20 YEARS OLD – MAKE A DIFFERENCE: “I think this would be difficult for anyone. It’s just an unfortunate thing.”

HOW THERAPEUTIC IS IT TO BE AT THE RACETRACK: “I had questions about coming to this race whether I needed to or not. But it’s always good to be around the racing family because these are the people who are closest to me and will be able to pick me up when I need to be picked up. Being around my teammates and the crew and all the fans out here has bene good so far.”

WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO COMPETE THIS WEEK: “If I were in a car I would do what Justin would want me to do, which is go out there and be a badass and do what I always do.”

HOW IS YOUR FOOT, WHICH WAS INJURED IN THE CRASH: “It’s just bruised. No broken bones or anything. It’s getting better.”

IS THERE COMFORT IN THE FACT THAT IT WAS SUCH A FLUKE INCIDENT: “I don’t think there’s any comfort in this but it was such a freak accident. It is a tough time, and I’m just hoping his family is able to get through this with me. At night, you’re (in bed) looking at the ceiling and saying, ‘What if I didn’t spin?’ And that’s the toughest thing.”

UNTIL THAT POINT, HOW CONFIDENT WERE YOU ABOUT WINNING: “I was super confident. I was such a zone. The car wasn’t loose the whole race, and that’s why I don’t understand what happened and I’ve looked at the video 100 times. The car was really fast and the crew did a great job. I was bummed that I couldn’t finish the job for them.”

HAVE YOU SPOKEN TO WILSON’S WIDOW, JULIA: “I want to talk with here when the time is right. I have talked with (Wilson’s brother) Stefan at the hospital. He’s been there for me and I’ve been there for him.”

Tequila Patrón ESM Qualifies in Germany

Tequila Patrón ESM Qualifies in Germany

Nürburgring, Germany, – Aug. 29, 2015 – Tequila Patrón ESM will have their work cut out for them on Sunday of the FIA World Endurance Championship’s (FIA WEC) 6 Hours of Nürburgring following qualifying today. The team is up for the challenge and believes the No. 30 and No. 31 Tequila Patrón-sponsored Ligier JS2 Hondas have more potential than their performance showed in qualifying for the LMP2 class. The Florida-based team will start seventh and eighth in the race on Sunday.

Per the FIA WEC rules, the quickest lap time from each team’s two qualifying drivers are averaged in order to determine the starting position.

Ryan Dalziel and David Heinemeier Hansson qualified the No. 30 Tequila Patrón ESM Ligier JS Honda seventh with an average lap time of 1:48.342. Dalziel and Heinemeier Hansson are co-driving with Tequila Patrón ESM driver/owner Scott Sharp during the six-hour endurance challenge on Sunday.

Ed Brown and Johannes van Overbeek qualified the No. 31 Tequila Patrón ESM Ligier JS Honda eighth with an average lap time of 1:50.594. Brown and van Overbeek are co-driving with Jon Fogarty for Sunday’s race.

Casey Currie Perseveres through the Battlefield at Wild West Motorsports Park

Casey Currie Perseveres through the Battlefield at Wild West Motorsports Park
CORONA, California (Aug 24, 2015) – Casey and the #2 truck were headed back to Wild West Motorsports Park in Sparks, NV for Rounds 13 & 14 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS). In the hunt for the championship, Casey knew he needed two strong, consistent and clean finishes, which was exactly what he delivered. Though the races turned into a battlefield, Currie was able to keep out of most of the carnage and come home with two big points finishes, notching him up in the points standings.

Through the practices and qualifying, Casey knew that the races were going to be a fight to the end. So, it wasn’t surprising that he jumped up two positions in the first lap of the race to get as far away from the pack as possible. He held that position and raced flawlessly until there was a flag on lap 10 that caused the field to bunch back up again. He had a great jump on the restart until the truck in front of him didn’t go which forced Currie to lift to avoid a serious crash. He was able to get back some positions the were lost due to the restart, and in the end finished with an intact truck and significant championship points.

After the Saturday race, Casey commented, “It was brutal out there…but we came home with a good points finish and a truck that is ready to go for tomorrow. That is the main thing. We have to play this smart so we don’t use up the truck in one race. Tomorrow we have a great truck and will be charging for the top.”

Sunday’s Round 14 race was going to be challenging, but with the #2 truck on rails, Casey was able to make his way through the field with ease. With several cautions, the Pro Lite field stayed bunched up and there was intense door-to-door racing, but Currie’s experience and focus kept him charging to the front. He was able to avoid the rollovers and carnage and managed to put down some of the fastest lap times of the race. Currie came home again with a gain in points and a truck that is ready to put down more fast laps in Las Vegas in September.

Honda Racing Statement on the Passing of Justin Wilson

Art St. Cyr, president, Honda Performance Development

“To say that we are heartbroken over the loss of Justin Wilson would create the false impression that our pain is localized. At a time earlier in the season, when we were in a continuing struggle to remain competitive in the Verizon IndyCar Series, Justin was the guy who WANTED to be with Honda, and he demonstrated that time and again. That allows you to take the measure of the man, and we will be forever grateful for his loyalty, and the gracious and gentlemanly way he represented our company, on and off the race track.

He was our friend, and our comrade. All of our thoughts and prayers are for his wife, Julia, daughters Jane and Jessica; his parents Keith and Lynne; his brother Stefan; and his many friends around the world.”
