Ryan Blaney and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion team earned their fifth top-10 start in 14 tries this season by taking the ninth starting spot for Sunday’s CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The rookie Blaney and his rookie crew chief Jeremy Bullins have maintained the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team’s tradition of having fast Fords when the Sprint Cup Series races at Talladega and Daytona International Speedway, the two tracks where restrictor plates are used to keep speeds at a relative safe level. HOW DEEP DOES THIS EFFORT GO?
“It’s very deep. These guys work extremely hard. I know everybody does for these restrictor plate tracks. To be able to get the results like that and they have been doing it all year long on these tracks. That is just a complete credit to all the details that come from the top down. Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) he really does a phenomenal job at every track, but especially these tracks with these cars. JEFF GORDON:

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 3M CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media Friday at Talladega Superspeedway. He discussed his approach to Sunday’s final race of the Contender round, his history and best memories at Talladega, his season to date and other topics. Full transcript:

YOU HAVE A LONG HISTORY AT TALLADEGA WITH SIX WINS HERE. IT IS A MUST-WIN SITUATION FOR YOU AND SEVERAL OTHER CHASE DRIVERS. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO THE WEEKEND?
“In the position we’re in with most people besides Joey (Logano), the approach is the same whether you’re trying to win it, get a top-five, top-10, top-15 or top-20. We’re here to race a for a win. I feel like we’ve put together three pretty good restrictor plate races this year but we’ve not always ended up with the results we were looking for. We learned a tremendous amount in how we executed in those races and the mistakes we made that are easily fixed so we can hopefully get the result we need this weekend.” Continue reading Chevy Racing–NASCAR–Talladega

Talladega A Memorable Place For Blaney, Bullins and the Wood Brothers

October 22, 2015

Talladega Superspeedway has a mystique about it like no other track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

It has seen many strange events over the years – from a string of surprise winners in the 1970s and 1980s to Bobby Isaac parking Bud Moore’s Ford mid-race after hearing voices telling him to do so, to an instance of sabotage to race cars. Joey Logano captures back-to-back wins in the Contender Round
Team Penske and Roush Yates have 19 NSCS wins over the past three years
The win marks Ford’s 30th all-time NASCAR Chase victory
KANSAS CITY, Kan., October 20, 2015 – Roush Yates Engines and Ford Performance powered Joey Logano to his second consecutive Chase win at Kansas Speedway, making him two for two in the Contender Round. The win is Logano’s fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the season and 13th win of his career.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what we’re doing right now,” said Logano, “I’ve got to thank Shell, Pennzoil, AAA, Coca-Cola, Roush Yates motors. This is a big motor racetrack. I was on the gas a lot and they brought the big steam. We’re such a fast racecar, such a great team. We’ve showed it two weeks in a row now, and this is a lot of fun.”

It was a hard fought battle during the Hollywood Casino 400 on Sunday. Logano started 14th, but had a strong run up to second in the early laps of the race. Logano maintained a spot near the front all afternoon, and took the lead with five laps remaining. He captured the win in a green-white-checkered finish and celebrated with his signature triple axel burn out.

“Last pit stop Todd made a great call and made some great changes,” said Logano. “Then it was that time to find that next level as a driver and find that next little piece to get a little bit more speed out of your car. I was able to race hard and get back to the lead and be able to win.”

“To win back-to-back races in the Contender Round with Joey and Team Penske is quite an accomplishment,” said Doug Yates, President & CEO of Roush Yates. “He had a strong car all day. This is a great achievement and we take great pride in providing the power under the hood.”

The accomplishments of Roush Yates Engines on the track are the result of relationships with great partners including FORD Performance, Mahle Clevite, Cometic Gasket, Del West, Rottler Manufacturing, Mitee-Bite, Universal Technical Institute, Mitsubishi Materials U.S.A., and Safety Kleen. We rely on their products in our engines each week as they play a vital role in our success.

The same expertise and passion that goes into these winning race engines goes into providing our customers with premium performance products. Everyone on the Roush Yates team is dedicated to delivering power, performance and reliability to all of our customers.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series takes on Port Royal Speedway on Saturday and returns to Weedsport Speedway on Sunday

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series takes on Port Royal Speedway on Saturday and returns to Weedsport Speedway on Sunday
CONCORD, N.C. – Oct. 20, 2015 – The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has just four features to go before the end of the 2015 season. The series returns to action this weekend with stops at Port Royal (Pa.) Speedway on Saturday and Weedsport (N.Y.) Speedway on Sunday.

Though the championship race is wrapped up, as the final countdown to the end of the season begins, there are plenty of battles to keep an eye on.

The Outlaws battle the Posse one last time

With the series’ final trip to Central Pennsylvania this weekend, the appearance at Port Royal Speedway marks the final battle between the Outlaws and the Pennsylvania Posse in 2015. Through five completed features (one at Lincoln Speedway and four at Williams Grove Speedway) the Posse has an overwhelming four to one lead. This includes the biggest events of the year, including the Morgan Cup and the National Open.

The ‘Kunkletown Kid’ Ryan Smith picked up his first ever World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory after holding off Donny Schatz in last season’s event at Port Royal. Does the Posse take another or do the Outlaws get one more on the board before 2015 comes to an end?

How does the points battle shake out in the middle of the pack?

Though the battle for first and second is no more, there is a fierce battle underway in the middle of the championship and team standings. On the driver side, just 59 points separate third from sixth. Brad Sweet, the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year presented by ButlerBuilt recipient, currently sits in third. Close on his heels are Joey Saldana in fourth, Kerry Madsen in fifth and Daryn Pittman in sixth. Just one point separates Saldana and Madsen for the fourth position.

The team standings feature a similarly tight battle from third to sixth. Just 62 points separate the third place No. 9 Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb team from the sixth place No. 29 Keneric Racing team. Third and fourth is a team battle between the No. 9 and No. 49 with 25 points separating them while just one point separates the No. 71m Motter Motorsports team from the Keneric Racing team for fifth.

David Gravel vs. Jason Sides

Another close points battle is the one between David Gravel and Jason Sides, who enter the final stretch of the season separated by just 36 points. With one win and two more top-five finishes, the edge goes to Sides who is currently eighth in the standings.

Can Donny Schatz win one more?

Donny Schatz, the 2015 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion, has racked up 31 trips to victory lane this season. That total is good enough to tie him with Steve Kinser for third on the all-time single season wins list. Schatz was the first driver since Kinser in 1992 to score 30 or more wins in a single season. With one more victory, Schatz will take the spot in the history books outright from Kinser – Kinser still owns the record for the most wins in a single season and second most wins in a single season.

Richard Childress Racing Assigns Gil Martin as XFINITY Series Competition Director

WELCOME, N.C. (October 20, 2015) – Richard Childress Racing has assigned industry veteran and longtime RCR crew chief Gil Martin as its Competition Director for the NASCAR XFINITY Series, effective immediately.

“Gil has been in this role before with RCR and we are confident he will do as solid a job as he did before,” said Dr. Eric Warren, Director of Competition for RCR. “Gil has a tradition of success with this team and his leadership role with our XFINITY Series program will make our four teams even stronger.”

Martin, formerly crew chief of the No. 3 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team and Director of Research & Development, has been with RCR since 2000. He is among a select group of crew chiefs that have won races in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series. Martin guided the No. 2 XFINITY Series team with driver Clint Bowyer to the 2005 XFINITY Series driver championship.

“This is an exciting time for our XFINITY Series teams and I’m looking forward to building on our success,” Martin said. “Richard (Childress) has invested significant resources into our XFINITY Series program and we’ve brought in a lot of talented individuals. I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this group and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Martin, 55, is a native of Nashville, Tenn., and currently resides in Concord, N.C. He will report to Warren.

Gary Scelzi Racing–Scelzi Stymied by Bad Luck Throughout Trophy Cup

Scelzi Stymied by Bad Luck Throughout Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2015) – Misfortune was the theme for Dominic Scelzi throughout last weekend’s 22nd annual Trophy Cup.

Scelzi had kicked off the marquee event at Thunderbowl Raceway on Thursday by qualifying second quickest in his session, which only had approximately a dozen remaining qualifiers before rain wiped out the remainder of the night.

While the program was pushed to Friday afternoon, all drivers in the group were forced to requalify.

“I think that was pretty much the end of our Trophy Cup,” he said. “They were rushing us through and we were the first car out for qualifying. The track was still greasy and not run in. It really hindered us. With the way they ran qualifying through like that we were unlucky.”

Scelzi qualified 27th quickest on the unfavorable track. That started him on the pole of a heat race.

“In the heat the track completely changed from greasy and rough to slick,” he said. “You had to be around the top. There was nothing on the bottom. The outside guy got me on the start. I closed in on him several times, but there wasn’t a way I could get around him.”

Scelzi placed second in the heat race, which relegated him to the 23rd starting position in the B Main.

“We had a really good car in the B Main,” he said. “We were extremely fast. I think we were one of the fastest cars all weekend. We just didn’t have one thing go our way. We passed more than anyone in the B Main and could run the top and the bottom. We just ran out of laps.”

Scelzi maneuvered to a 12th-place result in the consolation race.

He then kicked off Friday’s second round by qualifying 14th quickest. That lined him up on the outside of the second row for a heat race.

“We had a really good race car and got up to second right away,” he said. “I moved up to the top and got into a hole on the entry of turn one. That got me upside down.”

Scelzi was unable to finish the heat race after his flip. That sent him to the B Main, where he was the victim to a crash in front of him.

“We were going really well on the bottom in the first lap or two,” he said. “There was a crash and the entire track was blocked off. I hit the guy in front of me and it knocked the front end out. We elected to call it a weekend at that point.”

Scelzi will return to action this Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., for the 30th annual Cotton Classic with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.

PERMATEX/FOLLOW A DREAM RUNS ALL-TIME BEST 5.51 AT DALLAS

Marstons Mills, MA-October 21, 2015-Jay Blake’s Permatex/Follow A Dream team made its quickest run ever in its first appearance at the NHRA Fall Nationals at Dallas. Driver Todd Veney ran a 5.51 at 265 mph in the opening round of eliminations but lost to a 5.46, one of the quickest runs in Top Alcohol Funny Car history, by Sweden’s Jonnie Lindberg.

“I never saw him,” said Veney, who fell by just 18-thousandths of a second. “It’s pretty tough to lose on a run that good, but that’s the way it’s been going for us lately. The same thing happened at Indy and Maple Grove.” The 5.51 was by far the quickest losing run of the round and quicker than many winning runs. In quarterfinal losses at Indy and Maple Grove, the team was faster than every run except the one in the opposite lane.

“Nobody ever said this was easy,” said Blake, whose team now ranks sixth in the NHRA national standings, four points out of fifth place and 13 points out of fourth. “The top nine cars in the country were here, and it showed – this was the fastest field in Alcohol Funny Car history.” The Texas Motorplex’s all-concrete quarter-mile delivered a record bump of 5.62.

Brian Scott Scores a Career-High NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Finish at Kansas Speedway

Brian Scott and the No. 33 Shore Lodge Chevrolet team qualified in the 16th position for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Kansas 400 at Kansas Speedway. In his Sprint Cup debut at the 1.5-mile track, the 28-year-old driver raced in and around the top 20 for the first 100 laps of the race as they battled with handling issues, namely a lack of front turn on his Chevrolet SS. During pit stops on lap 110 and 156, the Shore Lodge team made minimal adjustments with both stops including four fresh tires and fuel. Scott picked up positions battling as high as 11th and not falling outside of the top 20. A two-tire stop on lap 174 left the Boise, Idaho native loose during the run, but he continued to keep lap times with the leaders and maintained his position inside the top 15. The No. 33 machine made another stop on pit road during a green-flag pit stop cycle taking four fresh Goodyear tires, fuel and no additional adjustments. The green-flag cycle left the team one lap short to the leader. Scott took the wave around on lap 246 under caution to regain the lead lap position. With 20 laps to go, the Shore Lodge Chevrolet took the green in the 14th position. A final caution period with five laps to go brought the team back to pit road for a final four-tire stop. The green-white-checkered finish allowed Scott to make his final charge and gain two positions before crossing the finish line 12th. This result marks a career high for Scott in the Sprint Cup Series.

Start – 16 Finish – 12 Laps Led – 0 Points – N/A

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTE:
“I am really proud of the effort of our Shore Lodge Chevrolet team today. This team did a great job all weekend and we fought hard the entire race. This gives us good momentum to head into Texas Motor Speedway for our final Sprint Cup race of the year.”
