| POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 08, 2023) – Robert Hight and the Automobile Club of Southern California / Cornwell Tools Chevrolet Camaro SS team are just 17 points out of the lead for their fourth Camping World NHRA Funny Car Championship as they head into this weekend’s In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. Coming off a weekend in which the Auto Club team claimed the maximum available points on the way to winning the NHRA Nevada Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Hight sits third in the points standings as he attempts to join John Force, Don Prudhomme, and Kenny Bernstein as the only Funny Car drivers with at least four series championships. En route to his fourth win of the season, Hight and the Auto Club team had a track record-setting first-round time of 3.816 seconds, the quickest in the Funny Car division in six years and the ninth quickest in history. “This is amazing and exactly what NHRA wants is for the championship to come down to the last race of the year the NHRA Finals, and for it to go clear down to the final round. That’s a very real possibility of going to the final round and having to win the race to win the championship. There’s no more excitement than that,” Hight said. “It’s points and a half in Pomona, but if it wasn’t points and a half, I think it would be more exciting this year because of how close we are. The way these three cars run, I don’t think anybody can gain a round with points and a half if we run to our potential. No one is running away with this deal. I’m just glad to be a part of it, and it’s going to be exciting. Probably a lot of sleepless nights between now and Sunday.” Hight has won six times at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip but only once in the Finals in 2007. He has advanced to the final round three times in 2011, 2017 and 2019. Last year, after qualifying fourth, he had a quarterfinal exit, falling short of the championship title by three points. Competition at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip begins with four qualifying runs Friday and Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. Eliminations will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. Television coverage of the event will air Sunday on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) with a qualifying show at 2 p.m. ET and eliminations at 4 p.m. ET. |
JOHN FORCE AND PEAK LOOK TO CAP SEASON WITH A WIN AT NHRA FINALS
| POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 08, 2023) – John Force and the PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS team will look to extend to 34 the number of years Force has won at least one event on tour when they close out the season at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Drag strip for the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals. Come Sunday, Force will be making his 82nd race day start at the historic drag strip located on the Pomona Fairgrounds, his 40th at the season finale. Force has won 16 times in three different events at his hometown racetrack, he is one of only two drivers to have won three different events at the Southern California location, the other is Jeg Coughlin Jr. in Pro Stock. In 2001, they both held Wally’s at the end of the 50th Anniversary NHRA Nationals which was held in addition to the regularly scheduled Winternationals and Finals. Force’s eight wins at the Finals came in even-numbered years dating back to 1988, 1994, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and most recently in 2010. Force last appeared in a final round in 2016 and was also runner-up in 2013 and 2014. Last year, Force started race day from the No. 7 position and picked up a first-round win before making a quarterfinal exit. “Pomona, the fairgrounds, that’s home. There’s a lot of history, and not just for me, for all of NHRA. I’m looking forward to getting back out there. It’s a difficult track but it’s exciting,” Force said. “I know we aren’t in it for the championship, but Robert and that AAA Cornwell Tools team is and maybe we can do some good to help them out. This PEAK team goes out every weekend to win, that’s no different now. End this season with a win for PEAK, Chevy and all our partners, that’s what we want to do.” Competition at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip begins with four qualifying runs Friday and Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. Eliminations will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. Television coverage of the event will air Sunday on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) with a qualifying show at 2 p.m. ET and eliminations at 4 p.m. ET. |
AUSTIN PROCK AND MONTANA BRAND BEGIN DEFENSE OF NHRA FINALS TITLE
| POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 08, 2023) – Austin Prock and the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet dragster team return to the 2019 Rookie of the Years’ favorite racetrack, In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, for the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals. Led this year by the crew chief tandem of Chris Cunningham and Joe Barlam, the Montana Brand team enters the weekend as the defending event champions. He won last year’s Finals from the No. 5 qualifying spot. Earlier this year, Prock raced to his third consecutive runner-up finish at the Winternationals held at the same location. “I’m excited to get back to a racetrack. I’d love to be in a racecar every day of the week, so these off weekends are rough for me,” Prock said. “I feel like this Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist team has had a really good dragster the past two events in Dallas and Las Vegas. Hopefully, we can put it all together this weekend for the Finals and my favorite stop of the year.” Starting from eighth in the championship points standings, Prock and the Montana Brand team have one win this season from the Charlotte Four-Wide event when they doubled up with teammate Robert Hight. Prock has also earned a No. 1 qualifying position at the Sonoma Nationals in Northern California in addition to his runner-up finish at the Winternationals. DRAG RACE BRACKET BONANZA DOUBLES POINTS FOR WORLD FINALS
DALLAS (November 8, 2023) — Heading into the finale of the NHRA season there are world championships on the line as well as serious bragging rights for NHRA fans. At the conclusion of the race, Drag Race Bracket Bonanza(DRBB), the first dynamic free bracket competition for drag racing fans, will crown its inaugural overall playoff champion and recognize the overall runner-up with one-of-a-kind DRBB championship belts signed by the newly crowned NHRA world champions. To add to the growing excitement DRBB will award double points during the World Finals. The final race of the season is slated for this weekend at In-N-Out Burger Dragstrip in Pomona, November 10-12, and based on the continued growth of the DRBB, thousands of fans are enjoying the free and fun bracket-style online game experience.

Currently the top five in the overall standings include Flusher (393.862), J (389.575), Payto (387.785), DENSY (386.333) and Nitrostalgic (383.702). Payto was the overall winner and DENSY was the Pro Stock winner at the Reading Nationals. The remaining top five players have held their positions through consistent top five finishes throughout the playoff races. The final race of the season will be a nail-biter with players picking all four categories with world championship implications and bracket busters looming.
“The race for the DRBB championship is coming down to the final race of the season just like the World Finals will be the deciding race for the NHRA world championships,” said Elon Werner, Drag Race Bracket Bonanza creator. “I can’t wait to see how it turns out and I know all the players will be glued to their brackets and FS1 as the race unfolds on Sunday. Fans can still sign-up for free at www.dragracebracketbonanza.com and we are expecting record participation.”
After the Nevada Nationals five winners rose to the top including the first repeat winner in DRBB history. Jerry C. from Austin, Indiana, won the Nevada Nationals Funny Car title to add to his U.S. Nationals Funny Car win. Lisa K. from Bluffton, South Carolina won the Nevada Nationals overall title with Shawn K., picking up the Top Fuel title. In Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle it was Jeff E., and Drew P. taking the wins respectively.
“The Nevada Nationals threw up a curve ball on Saturday night when the Funny car final qualifying order was adjusted, but the DRBB technical team stepped up and we got everything straightened out,” said Werner. “Thankfully our social media team got the word out quickly and we were able to adjust on the fly. All the brackets were updated, and we moved into race day without any major issues. It was a record setting weekend for participation, and we are looking forward to another record-breaking event in Pomona.”
During the NHRA Nevada Nationals DRBB had PA announcements and social media support from the NHRA including a marketing email blast to tens of thousands of NHRA fans. This weekend we will again promote DRBB over the PA and on NHRA.TV with additional social media support on Twitter and Facebook.
Dominic Scelzi Records Top Five at Tribute to Gary Patterson Event
Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2023) – Dominic Scelzi wrapped up the NARC 410 Sprint Car Series season with a top-five run last Saturday during the 40 th annual Tribute to Gary Patterson.
The performance at the Stockton Dirt Track secured a third-place finish in the championship standings, giving Scelzi a podium in the final standings for the fourth time in the last five years.

“It’s a good season whenever you can be in contention for a championship,” he said. “While we didn’t win our third straight championship, we were in the top three all season. It was frustrating in the sense we were better than third and for whatever reason whenever we had something go wrong it only happened at NARC events. From running out of fuel, being taken out by lappers, you name it and we had it happen. You can’t be a champion with five DNFs. I was thrilled with the speed and maneuverability with our car all season, but sometimes you have those years when things don’t go your way.”
Scelzi kicked off the event last Saturday by qualifying fourth quickest. He then placed second in a heat race to narrowly miss making the dash, starting Scelzi seventh in the feature.
“We were really good, but when you have a one-lane track it’s impossible to compete,” he said. “In the heat race it had grease on the bottom for five feet, grip for five feet and then grease above that. It gave an advantage to the cars on the outside. We spun the tires on the start and ran second. In the main event it was rough. We rode around and got what we could whenever someone in front of us would hit a hole or get tight.”
Scelzi gained a trio of positions, which was tied for the third most.
Next up is a trip to Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, Ariz., this Friday and Saturday for an ASCS Southwest Region doubleheader.
“We ran there earlier in the year and both races got cut short,” he said. “We went fourth to second and were right there for the win during the opener. The next night we started 10 th and we ran up to second. We really enjoyed the track. It was an awesome surface. Both nights raced really, really good so we’re looking forward to returning this weekend.”

ELITE MOTORSPORTS IS READY TO CONQUER THE DRAGSTRIP AT NHRA FINALS IN POMONA
![]() |
| POMONA, Calif. (November 8, 2023) – The 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Pro Stock season will not soon be forgotten by drag racing fans. The competition has been ferocious all year long. We’ve seen seven different winners over the course of the season with no single driver earning more than four event victories. Elite Motorsports, the largest team in professional drag racing, has experienced a dramatic season full of highs and lows. But through it all, the Elite Fleet has remained steadfast in its pursuit of excellence. As the season wraps up this weekend at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at famed In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, Elite Motorsports standout Erica Enders is once again at the top of the points standings. After experiencing a rocky start to the season, the five-time Pro Stock world champion has worked her way back from No. 15 in the standings to her current position demonstrating that she has not only the skill but also the persistence required to go the distance in NHRA drag racing. In fact, persistence has been the key to the success of the Elite Motorsports team this season among all of its talented drivers. Enders, who recently became the Winningest Woman In Motorsports, earned her fourth win of the season two weeks ago in Las Vegas. While she currently holds the lead, all points this weekend count for points-and-a-half, meaning Enders will have a target on her back as she enters the final race of the season. Fortunately, the driver of the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage / Melling Performance / SCAG Power Equipment Camaro thrives best when the pressure is on. While Enders has the full support of her Elite Motorsports teammates, she knows that they want to win the final event of the season just as badly as she does. It’s going to be an exciting weekend full of crazy drag racing action where anything could happen. Under the watchful eyes of Mark Ingersoll, Tim Freeman, Chase Freeman and the rest of the group, the Elite Motorsports Pro Stock teams will work together to engineer and launch nine finely tuned automobiles in Pomona. Jeg Coughlin Jr. ties Enders in Pro Stock world championships but has one more in the sportsman ranks. Jeg Jr. came out of retirement to race with the Elite Fleet during the final two events of the season in order to break in a new RJ Race Cars-built Camaro under the SCAG Power Equipment banner. The skilled Pro Stock veteran hasn’t missed a beat since returning to the field. He landed a semifinal finish in Las Vegas and he’s eager to add to that success this weekend. Troy Coughlin Jr. has one thing on his mind going into this event – turning on as many win lights as possible behind the wheel of his JEGS.com Camaro. The talented driver has two wins to his season but has yet to win a Pro Stock victory at the iconic Pomona Dragstrip. His teammate Aaron Stanfield recently won his third FlexJet Factory Stock Showdown world championship and he has his sights set on landing his Janac Brothers / Melling Engine Parts Pro Stock Camaro in the winners circle. 2017 Pro Stock world champion Bo Butner would like nothing more than to earn an NHRA Finals victory in his Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Camaro. JHG has been a phenomenal supporter of the drag racing community as a whole. Elite Motorsports newcomer Jerry Tucker is looking back on his rookie season behind the wheel of his Outlaw Mile Hi Light Beer Camaro and enjoying every minute of his professional journey. He’s been improving consistently and wants to put on a great show for the fans this weekend. The Cuadra Boys, featuring patriarch Fernando Cuadra Sr. and his sons, Fernando Jr. and Cristian, are ready to apply all of the skills they’ve developed throughout the season to earn their first Pro Stock victory. David Cuadra will be competing in Top Sportsman where he already has one national event win this year. In its first foray into the Top Fuel ranks, Elite Motorsports is sponsoring Spencer Hyde in his Top Fuel debut behind the wheel of the Elite Motorsports dragster operated by the Paton Racing Team. All of the racing action for the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals kicks off with sportsman competition tomorrow, November 9. Professional competition will commence on Friday, November 10 with two qualifying rounds at 12 and 3 p.m. PT, followed by two more qualifying passes on Saturday at 12 and 3 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday. *** |
| Driver Quotes |
Erica Enders“It’s hard to believe that we are back in Pomona again. I would have never guessed, after our challenging start, that we would be contending for our 6th World Title. It goes to show you what is possible when you never give up. I am fortunate to work with some of the most brilliant men in motorsports and they continue to show me why they are champions. We will attempt to make this another dream weekend. Eight possible runs, one more race, to show the world that we are Elite for a reason.” |
Aaron Stanfield“While consistency is good and it’s helped us maintain a solid position in the points, this team is bound and determined to get a win this weekend! My guys have worked tirelessly and I know we’ve got a car that can get the job done. It would be awesome to shake up the standings in a big way in a city that does everything big. Can’t wait to hit the track!” |
Troy Coughlin Jr.“Pomona is a majestic place for drag racing! Myself and the men on Team Yellow would be honored to leave with a gold man! My goal is to stay focused on the process of making nice smooth laps and try and turn four win lights on!” |
Bo Butner“Heading into this last race of the year, we’re excited. We see it as one last opportunity to put the JHG Chevy in the winners circle in 2023. To end this season like that would really mean a lot to us, and it would give us a little momentum going into the off-season.” |
Jerry Tucker“I can’t believe my rookie year in Pro Stock is coming to a close. I’m ready to give it my all this weekend in Pomona. The positive progress we’ve seen over the past few races is great motivation to finish the season strong and put on a great performance for the fans. Keep a close eye on the Outlaw Mile Hi Light Beer Camaro this weekend. I think it’s time we give everyone a classic long smokey burnout!” |
Jeg Coughlin Jr.“This will be my first time back at Pomona since February of 2020 and I couldn’t be more excited. Our performance with this new car in Vegas was spectacular and we look forward to fine-tuning at “sea level” conditions in Pomona. It felt great to work with the entire team and represent SCAG Power Equipment, JHG and our Elite partners.” |
Fernando Cuadra Sr.“We are going to finish out the season putting our best foot forward. I’m so proud of my family and all that they’ve accomplished this year. We are having fun and always learning.” |
Fernando Cuadra Jr.“I’m excited to return to Pomona, but it’s hard to believe the season is already coming to an end. It’s been a crazy year full of ups and downs. This crew is incredible and I’ve gained a lot of confidence as a driver. Hopefully, we can put it all together and finish the season with a great performance.” |
Cristian Cuadra“I’m thrilled to be in the Top Ten coming into the Finals. Because we are competing for points and a half, anything can happen this weekend. We’ve got to be on our game in order to keep our position. The pressure is going to be intense but we are just going to focus on what we can control.” |
Spencer Hyde“I’m super excited to make my NHRA Top Fuel debut in Pomona this weekend. Especially to do it with help from Elite Motorsports, the largest professional team in drag racing. I’m a bit nervous, but I also have all the confidence in the world in the Paton Racing team. I know they will give me a car that will go from A to B and I hope we can surprise a few people this weekend by making some solid runs in the 3.70’s.” |

Fernando Jr. raced to the final round of the prestigious U.S. Nationals earlier this season and is currently the sport’s No. 12 ranked Pro Stock driver. Cristian Cuadra was also the runner-up to Enders in the final round of the 2022 four-wide event in Las Vegas and he was a semifinalist earlier this year at the Bristol race. He comes into this weekend as the No. 9 ranked driver in Pro Stock. Earlier this season in Phoenix, Cristian Cuadra became the first Mexican-born NHRA racer to qualify No. 1 in a pro category when he drove his Elite-powered Corral Handcrafted Boots Mustang to a 6.552 pass. C. Cuadra is one of just 11 non-U.S.-born drivers to qualify No. 1 in a professional NHRA class and the only one to accomplish the feat in Pro Stock. The third Cuadra brother, David, recently claimed the first win for the family when he won the Right Trailers Top Sportsman title at the betway NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte. He will once again be competing in the Top Sportsman class this weekend. The Cuadra family has career-best elapsed times of 6.500 (Fernando Jr.), 6.524 (Fernando Sr.), 6.500 (Cristian) and 6.578 (David). Their career-best speeds are 212.13 (Fernando Sr.), 211.43 (Cristian), 210.73 (Fernando Jr.) and 209.39 (David). New to the Elite Pro Stock team this year is Jerry Tucker, who enjoyed a memorable debut in Gainesville. Tucker qualified his Outlaw Mile Hi Light Beer / Elite Motorsports Camaro in the No. 15 spot with a 6.573 and won the first round after teammate Enders encountered a mechanical issue. Tucker has a semifinal finish from Chicago and is No. 13 in the standings. At a recent event in Dallas, Tucker qualified a season-high No. 4 and also set career bests with an elapsed time of 6.486 seconds and a speed of 213.09 mph. Tucker, of Lindsay, Okla., has spent the last 30 years racing everything from Sprint cars to Midgets and has also enjoyed success in drag racing. Tucker previously raced in the Top Sportsman class. Tucker was recently named one of the five finalists for the 2023 NHRA Rookie of the Year award. Collectively, the team Elite drivers racing in Las Vegas have combined to win 113 NHRA national event titles across all classes including 69 in the Pro Stock class. Adding the return of Jeg Jr., those numbers swell to 197 wins including 134 in Pro Stock. |

BRITTANY FORCE AND MONSTER ENERGY LOOK TO END SEASON WITH A WIN AT HOME TRACK
| POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 08, 2023) – Brittany Force and the Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster team are looking to add more accolades to their history at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Raceway at this weekend’s In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals. Force and the Monster Energy team not only ended last season with a championship at the track located just down the highway from her hometown of Yorba Linda, California but with the No. 1 qualifying position and the Top Fuel national speed record of 338.94 mph before a semifinal finish at the hands of eventual event winner and teammate Austin Prock. Previously Force picked up a victory at the NHRA Finals in 2017 when she won her first Top Fuel championship and became the first woman in 35 years to wear the crown. “I can’t believe we’re heading into the final race of the season at my home track in Pomona already. This track has a lot of memories and a lot of history for me personally and for John Force Racing. In-N-Out Burger Raceway at Pomona is a track I grew up at as a kid with my sisters watching our dad and since then I’ve won championships, won the event, gone No. 1, and set the national speed record on that property,” Force said. “We spent Monday testing in Vegas to really narrow in on issues we had over the weekend. We feel confident coming into Pomona that we’ll qualify top 5 and go rounds on race day. After all the history I’ve had here this Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team is really going to push to end this season on a strong note.” Entering their final race as the reigning world champions, the Monster Energy team is looking to extend to seven their streak of consecutive seasons with at least one win on tour. Force has had the top speed at 12 and low elapsed time at six of the 20 events as well as claimed the No. 1 position at four while reaching the final round once with a runner-up finish in Topeka, Kansas. ET. |
Josh Hart Looks to Close Out Season with Momentum
OCALA, FL (November 8, 2023) — A season of frustration for Top Fuel team owner and driver Josh Hart will end this weekend at the NHRA Finals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. For the entrepreneur from Ocala, Florida, who overcame several hardships growing, the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series is a season that started with so much promise but never took a foothold in consistency. The R+L Carriers Top Fuel team will take their last shot at winning with the opportunity to finish in the Top Ten and continue their role as spoiler in the Top Fuel championship battle.
“This season has not gone the way we planned at all, but nothing is guaranteed, and everything has to be earned out here,” said Hart, who won twice in his rookie season. “I am a single car team competing against the best teams in the world. This was just our second full season on the NHRA tour and we are continuing to find our way.”

At the season opening race Hart took the biggest payday of the season when he won the Pep Boys Top Fuel Allstar Callout. It would be the highlight of his season and the motivation to keep the former Top Alcohol Dragster competitor going as he navigated the toughest class in the NHRA. In the middle of the season Hart raced to the final round of the Gerber Collision & Glass Rt 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago. At the end of July Hart had capped the Western Swing with a semifinal finish that locked him into the Top Ten and secured his spot in the Countdown playoffs.
“We showed flashes throughout the season, but we just never hit our stride,” said Hart. “Everyone on the team was all working together but we were chasing some gremlins in the car. I think what I am most proud of is even with all the ups and down no one gave up.”
Coming into the Countdown Hart’s struggles continued through the first four races before the NHRA Nevada Nationals showed the promise and possibilities for the R+L Carriers team. As the No. 12 qualifier Hart took out the point leader Leah Pruett on a hole shot in a massive upset with championship implications. In the next round Hart was first off the line again and defeated the new point leader Doug Kalitta on another hole shot to advance to the semifinals and move up to No. 11 in the point standings. Those two round wins shuffled the Top Fuel point standings to the point that heading into the final race of the season five different drivers have a chance for the world championship.
“We had a solid race day in Las Vegas and I feel like we turned a little bit of a corner as a team,” said Hart. “We need to have more days like that. We can start with four good qualifying runs in Pomona this weekend and then I would like to have a long say on Sunday. We can’t win the championship this year but if we can have a hand in who does win the championship, I will take that. I am looking ahead to next season. I truly believe we have a team that can be world champions.”
Heading into the final race of the season Hart is sitting 26 points outside the Top Ten behind veteran Clay Millican. That is less than one round of racing with points and a half on the line at the NHRA Finals. He is 55 points behind Austin Prock who sits in eighth place, which is less than two rounds. There is an outside chance Hart could overtake Millican, Tony Schumacher, Prock and Brittany Force if the ladder falls his was and he picks up his first NHRA Final win and propel him to seventh place, which would equal his best finish in Top Fuel.
“I want to finish in the Top Ten for sure but if we could get even higher that would be a nice accomplishment for how this season has played out,” said Hart. “You look at the teams that have competed all season. There will only be one champion and we want to get as close to the top spot as possible. I want to thank R+L Carriers and TechNet for their support and we owe it to all our sponsors and fans to give it our all at the NHRA Finals.”
The R+L Carriers Top Fuel team and Hart will have two qualifying sessions on Friday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. PT followed by two more qualifying runs at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. PT on Saturday. The quickest 16 Top Fuel dragsters will race for the final Wally of the season starting at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday. The race will be broadcast on FS1 nationally.
JUSTIN ASHLEY HAS PATH TO CHAMPIONSHIP IN POMONA
PLAINVIEW, NY (November 7, 2023) — As his most dominant season as a Top Fuel driver and team owner comes down to the final race of the season, the NHRA Finals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, Justin Ashley has a clear path to his first NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series world championship. It is not an easy road by any means but sitting just 82 points behind point leader Steve Torrence and having 30 points per round available, plus possible qualifying bonus points a strong qualifying effort and a cooperative competition ladder could give Ashley and his Phillips Connect Toyota Top Fuel team a legitimate shot at the world title.

“At the beginning of the season everyone says they just want to have a shot at the championship coming into the NHRA Finals at Pomona in November,” said Ashley, a six-time winner in 2023. “We have our shot and now it’s all about capitalizing on the opportunities that are ahead. We’re focused on taking it one round at a time and letting the points take care of themselves. Our best chance to win this championship is by taking care of our business and not being concerned with the variables around us.”
The past year years at the NHRA Finals Ashley has suffered first round exits at the hands of Toyota teammate and strategic technology partner Antron Brown. Conversely over the past three years at the NHRA Winternationals at the same track Ashley has raced to three consecutive final rounds winning the past two events including the 2023 edition when he was No. 1 qualifier. A weekend like that in Pomona would set Ashley and the Phillips Connect Toyota team for major success. Over the past three Winternationals Ashley has qualified No. 7, No. 2, and No. 1.
“We have had great success at the Winternationals and we want to capture some of that magic this weekend at the NHRA Finals,” said Ashley. “I love racing in Pomona because it’s our time to be with the Phillips Family and engage with representatives and customers near their hometown. I feel like we turned our Countdown around two weeks ago and we are in a great position to finish on a high note. There is no better time and place than the World Finals to turn on win lights.”
In Las Vegas at the NHRA Nevada Nationals Ashley started the race as the No. 6 qualifier and raced to the final round before losing a close final to Mike Salinas. Ashley defeated Dan Mercier, Austin Prock and Steve Torrence on the way to his eighth final of the year. The semifinal win over Torrence was huge to keep Ashley’s championship hopes alive.
“I think that win over Steve in the semis was the round win that kept us in the championship hunt,” said Ashley. “He is a four-time world champion and is the point leader so stopping him there was big. We could have made up some more ground with a win but now we need to stack four more round wins on our season total and see how the math works out. This has been an amazing season no matter what happens, but we are focused on winning the championship.”
In 2023 Ashley and the Phillips Connect Toyota Top Fuel dragster have been the class leader throughout the season. They raced to eight final rounds collecting six wins and three No. 1 qualifiers. They dominated the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge collecting six wins in the specialty race that also earned him 21 championship points. Ashley entered the 2023 Countdown as the No. 1 seed but over the first four races he was unable to hold off charging competitors like Torrence, Doug Kalitta and Leah Pruett. Now facing an 82-point deficit from the top spot and a 48-point deficit from Pruett in third Ashley has his work cut out for himself.
“There are little points available throughout qualifying and 30 points per round available on raceday,” said Ashley. “We just want to get as many qualifying points as possible and then race to the best of our ability on Sunday. There are no easy rounds and the competition is stronger than it’s ever been before. We have an amazing team with these Phillips Connect guys led by Mike Green and Tommy DeLago so it will be exciting. I am looking forward to the challenge.”
Qualifying will begin on Friday November 10 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. PT with two more sessions slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. PT. The quickest 16 Top Fuel dragsters will begin locking up championship positions when eliminations begin at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday. The NHRA Finals will be broadcast nationally on FS1 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. PT.

It was a USAC (United States Auto Club) car at the beginning in non-wing. And he helped me get some pavement opportunities. He’s been my best friend and stuck behind me through thick and thin and just kept working toward the same goal. We both have an immense passion for Sprint Cars and Sprint Car racing.”Not only did winning the title include all the prestige of being a World of Outlaws champion, but it also came with a massive payday. It was unbelievable for sure. I know it was definitely one of the hardest years I’ve had in my life on and off the racetrack. Driving up and down the road with you guys and really racing against the best drivers and best teams in the world.”Consistency all year long led him to a fourth-place finish in the points, which equaled Jeff Swindell (1981) and Brad Doty (1982) for the highest finishing World of Outlaws rookie ever. It was also the second time KCP fielded a Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year driver with the other being Ian Madsen in 2018. Only Kasey Kahne Racing, Dave Helm, and KCP have multiple Rookie of the Year drivers.Ted Johnson Award: Every year the Ted Johnson Award is given as a way to recognize an individual’s outstanding contribution to the sport, and this year’s went to Brad Doty. From driving to announcing to promoting and much more, Doty’s passion for Sprint Car racing is unparalleled, and he’s dedicated so much of his life to helping the sport he loves.“I’m honored and humbled to win this award,” Doty said. “Probably not a lot of people in this building old enough to remember Ted. He was a character for sure. I got Rookie of the Year with the World of Outlaws in 1982, which was their fifth year of existence. I was just trying to get to the next race and never dreamt what the World of Outlaws would become and what it is today. I want to thank World Racing Group and the World of Outlaws for this award. Cadillac Racing WEC wrap-up: Solid first season
| No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R builds on successes, experiences for 2024 challenge |
| DETROIT (Nov. 6, 2023) — Cadillac Racing’s preparations for the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship began soon after the checkered flag Saturday in the 8 Hours of Bahrain. The dedicated crew prepped the race-worn No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R for Sunday’s WEC Rookie Test at Bahrain International Circuit, where Cadillac Racing driver Alex Lynn set up the hybrid racecar for INDYCAR-bound Kyffin Simpson and Nico Varrone, who helped Corvette Racing win the GTE Am championship. |
| “I think Nico and I were able to notice some things that the drivers who drive this all the time just kind of get accustomed to. Hopefully, they can take that information and improve the car for next year,” Simpson said. Seeking improvement on and off the racetrack is a constant goal, and Cadillac Racing’s Hypercar program is aiming to exceed expectations in its second WEC season that kicks off in March in Qatar. Click it: Cadillac Racing, Hypercar field FIA WEC season statistics “We learned a lot this year on many aspects of the car,” said Earl Bamber, who co-drove the No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R with Richard Westbrook and Lynn. “From where we started has been a big achievement, but we know where we can improve. I think this one year of experience in the series will be a big help to us. We’ll know the tracks now, we know what our weaknesses are, we know what compounds suit us and all those kinds of things. We’ll work on that for next season and be even stronger and have better opportunities of achieving our ultimate goal.” |
Highlighting Cadillac Racing’s inaugural WEC season was the third-place finish in the centenary 24 Hours of Le Mans. The podium at the endurance classic was the first for Cadillac Racing, which returned to Circuit de la Sarthe after a 21-year absence. The No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R, driven by Lynn, Bamber and Westbrook, started the season with top-five finishes at Sebring, Portimão and Spa-Francorchamps. The Cadillac LMDh platform, featuring the purpose-built 5.5-liter DOHC V8 engine developed by GM’s Performance and Racing propulsion team paired with the LMDh spec hybrid system, made its initial on-track appearance only 16 months ago. “2023 was a great season for us. We had ups and we had downs. But what was most important was we were able to learn so much throughout the season,” GM sports car racing program manager Laura Wontrop Klauser said. “Obviously, one of our huge moments was the third place at Le Mans and our success at that race. Even beyond that, every race we figured out how to be better. “As we were putting this jigsaw puzzle together that is Cadillac Racing with our Hypercar, we’re getting stronger and stronger and getting ready for ’24. We will try to get in as much testing as possible that makes sense. We’ll look where we need to fill holes in personnel and figure out how to be better with our resources across the board.” A December test in Spain is scheduled, which will be augmented by two test dates for Cadillac Racing’s two-car IMSA Grand Touring Prototype program.“It was a solid first season for the Cadillac Racing WEC team,” team manager Stephen Mitas said. “Obviously, the competition is super tough and with a new team, new program the learning curve was high. The team has come together well. Operationally, we’re happy with how things are working, and we’re just have to work on ’24 to deliver on the promise that has been forming over the course of 2023. We have a test in December, so a lot of work to come and areas to improve on technically with the car and momentum we’re putting together with the team.” |

CELEBRATING IN STYLE: Drivers Honored at Year End Banquet With Big Checks, Special Awards
| CONCORD, NC – November 6, 2023 – After 10 months of traveling across the country, the 2023 World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model Series handed up big checks and special awards during the year-end awards banquet Sunday evening.Along with Bobby Pierce being crowned the 2023 champion, the top-15 in points were honored throughout the night with many walking away with extra hardware.2023 Champion: In his first season with the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models, Bobby Pierce had a dominant stretch in the season’s second half to earn his first Series championship. The Oakwood, IL driver took home $150,000 for winning the title and another $25,000 from the Winners Circle bonus. He also won the Social Ambassador of the Year award for his consistent promotion of World of Outlaws races and DIRTVision throughout the year. By earning this accolade, he’ll receive a commercial on DIRTVision for his merchandise. The “Smooth Operator” finished the season with 14 wins, 25 top fives, and 32 top 10s en route to the Series title. “It honestly means the world,” Pierce said. “This season, I want to dedicate to my dad. He’s 71 years old, going on 72, and he gets up and down the road working on the car like a young guy. He keeps going, and we keep each other going, so that’s awesome. He’s been there my whole life, supporting me every step of the way. “It’s been a long year. It started a little rocky. We came off the first two races with DNFs, and we were like, man, it’s going to be tough to come back. But we came back, won the first race out (at Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals), and from then on, we got off going pretty well.” Here’s a look at who earned the Special Awards for the 2023 season:2023 Crew Chief of the Year Award: This year’s Crew Chief of the Year award went to Bobby Pierce’s crew chief and dad, Bob Pierce. The Hall of Famer took home the iconic wrench trophy to accompany the team’s championship accolades. “I may be getting the Crew Chief of the Year award, but my son made me look good a lot of times,” Pierce said. “Being on the World of Outlaws for the first year is pretty cool. Going up and down the road with a lot of miles has been pretty fun for an old guy like me. I keep this thing going because I love racing.” Engine Builder and Chassis Builder of the Year Award: These awards were given to the manufacturers behind Bobby Pierce’s championship. Vic Hill, from Vic Hill Race Engines, accepted the Engine Builder of the Year award, while Longhorn Chassis won Chassis Builder of the Year. Steve Arpin, owner of Longhorn Chassis, accepted the award—the first World of Outlaws title for the chassis builder. Germfree Rookie of the Year: With his fifth-place finish in the World of Outlaws Late Models standings, Nick Hoffman won the 2023 Germfree Rookie of the Year. As the top rookie, the Mooresville, NC driver received an extra $10,000 and custom ear molds from Racing Electronics. “At first, our ultimate goal was to try and win the Rookie of the Year,” Hoffman said. “To win one race this year was pretty cool. Especially at a race track I’ve never been to (at Stateline Speedway). It was a good year for us, a building year for sure. We got to build our notebook and try to get better. I feel like that’s the biggest thing we lacked a little bit. There were so many racetracks I hadn’t been to. So, we’ve been trying to build notes and make our program better.” Todd Cooney earned $3,000 for finishing second in the Rookie of the Year standings, while Dustin Walker took home an extra $2,000 for finishing third. HASS Horizontal Awards: In 2023, Hass Horizontal sponsored three awards for those who won the most Features, most Heat Races, and most Last Chance Showdowns. Series champion Bobby Pierce earned $3,500 for winning the most Features (14) and $1,500 for winning the most Heat Races (21). Ryan Gustin earned $1,500 for winning the most Last Chance Showdowns (5). The Raye Vest Award: This $500 award went to the drivers who had the best and worst pill draw in the 2023 season. It honors Raye Vest, a long-time supporter of 2011 Series champion Rick Eckert. This year’s winners were Todd Cooney (highest average) and Chris Madden (lowest average). FOX Factory Hard Charger Award: The Fox Factory Hard Charger award was given out each race to the driver who advanced the most positions by the end of the race. Winning the overall award for the year was Brett Larson, having earned sevenFOX Factory Hard Charger awards in 2023. Fan Favorite Award: Throughout the last month, fans voted for their favorite World of Outlaws Late Models driver. When the votes were tallied, it was Series rookie Todd Cooney who had the most votes, making him the Fan Favorite award winner in 2023. Racing With Jesus Ministries Sportsman Award: In 2023, Racing With Jesus Ministries awarded a Sportsman of the Year award worth $500. Lacey Walker, the daughter and crew chief for World of Outlaws driver Dustin Walker, won the award for her efforts and positive attitude throughout the 10-month grind of the 2023 schedule. “I’m just so happy that I was able to do it this year,” Walker said. “Especially with my dad, making new friends, meeting more people, and learning so much more about the racing.” Here’s a look at the top 15 in the final standings for the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models and their end of the year payouts including points fund and Winner Circle program:1. FORD PERFORMANCE / ROUSH YATES ENGINES SWEEP NASCAR CUP AND XFINITY CHAMPIONSHIPS WITH RYAN BLANEY AND COLE CUSTER
AVONDALE, AZ – November 6, 2023 – Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer won the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship race at Phoenix on Saturday while Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney won the NASCAR Cup Series championship on Sunday, completing a weekend sweep of both series by Ford Performance and Roush Yates Engines. This weekend also marked the first time an OEM has won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck, Xfinity, and Cup Series championships in the same season since 2001, and the sixth time that has happened in NASCAR history. |
![]() ![]() |
| “Congratulations to Ford Performance, Team Penske, and Stewart-Haas Racing on the Cup and Xfinity Series championships,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “It’s been a challenging year, but the leadership at Ford Performance, our Ford partnered race teams, and all the employees at Roush Yates Engines continued to work on our racing programs and never gave up! Cole (Custer) and Ryan (Blaney) battled throughout both races and earned their respective championship titles! We are blessed to be a part of the Ford family and provide championship-winning race engines.” |
| “As much as we’re a car company and we make and sell cars and trucks and we’re out here racing them, we’re also a family company, a people company and it’s all about the people that are racing these cars inside the shop and ultimately the drivers that get it done on track. Those three drivers that had a win this weekend to win a championship, to have Ben Rhodes, Cole Custer and Ryan Blaney as champions for this sport and representing our brand, we’re really proud of what they’ve done. I knew they all could do it and really glad to see them as champions,” commented Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance. |
| “It was somewhat of an up and down year, but you’re gonna have those moments and through the summer we just worked really hard to get back to where we needed to be and set a deadline for the playoffs and we met that deadline. I’m just super proud of the effort by everybody at Team Penske who put in tons and tons of hours of hard work and nobody really got down. They just put their heads down and decided to really put in a lot of work and it showed up, especially these playoffs and especially the last five weeks. It’s so cool to have all of their hard work pay off, so they should be proud,” commented Blaney. |
| Ryan Blaney started Sunday’s race in P15, behind fellow championship 4 playoff contenders Christopher Bell, William Byron, and Kyle Larson. The first non-competition caution came out on lap 109 after a brake rotor failure on Christopher Bell’s car ended his day. Stewart-Haas’s Kevin Harvick finished Stage 1 in P2, RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher in P6, and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney in P10. |
| RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher went on to win Stage 2, passing Ross Chastain for the lead with 14 laps to go in the stage while Ryan Blaney finished P6. With 31 laps remaining in the race, Blaney restarted sixth while Larson was third and Byron fifth, but the Team Penske driver passed Byron three laps later and then battled Larson before passing him on lap 292 of the 312-lap event. Blaney finished the race in second place, highest of any championship 4 driver, behind Ross Chastain. This year’s race was the first time since NASCAR instituted its winner-take-all final race championship format in 2014 that the winner of the final race of the season was not a driver racing for the title. RFK Racing’s Chris Buescher finished in P5, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick in P7, and Front Row Motorsports’ Michael McDowell in P9. |
| Cole Custer started Saturday’s race in P7, second highest of the playoff contenders. As the green flag came out to start stage 2, Custer passed John Hunter Nemechek and maintained the lead throughout the entire stage to take the stage win. In a race that produced eight cautions for a total of 46 laps, Custer led a race-high 96 of 202 laps. The end of the race came down to Cole Custer, Justin Allgaier and John Hunter Nemechek in a three-wide battle for the lead. Custer dove to the inside of the dogleg after starting on the outside during a restart and pulled away while Allgaier and Nemechek battled behind for second. Custer went on to win the race 0.601 seconds ahead of second place Sheldon Creed. Stewart-Haas teammate Riley Herbst finished in P4. |
| “I thought it was over. I mean, I went from first to third and I was able to shift the car all night and the Doug Yates horsepower worked out and pulled me off the corner. I can’t believe we won that thing after going back to third on that restart, but I can’t say enough about these guys. I mean, we started the year off and it was a struggle and we kind of had to dig deep with each other and really talk about how to get better. To see how much this group has grown through the year and to be a part of something, I knew I wanted to work with JT. I knew that he was the guy that could make it happen and I wouldn’t want to do it with anybody else. I just can’t thank Gene Haas enough. He’s given me opportunities and I wouldn’t be here without him. I can’t thank him enough, and Ford Performance, Haas Automation, everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing. It’s awesome to bring one back to Stewart-Haas right now. Man, I’m gonna enjoy this. I’ve been waiting to hear Wayne on the radio for a few times now, so I’m pumped,” commented Cole Custer. |

Burton Ends 2023 Campaign With 26th-Place Finish At Phoenix
November 5, 2023
Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team closed the 2023 Cup Series season with a 26th-place finish in Sunday’s Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway.
Burton started the 312-mile race from 25th place and finished 27th in the first 60-lap Stage, which ran under the green flag from start to finish.
In the second Stage, Burton finished 26th but was lapped by the leaders in the closing laps.
In the third and final segment of the race, Burton spent countless laps in the Free Pass position as the first driver a lap down, but the caution flags didn’t fly in his favor and he ended the race in 26th place, one lap down.
The finish of Sunday’s race saw Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, a former Wood Brothers driver, outrun his fellow championship contenders to capture his first Cup Series title.
It also was the first Cup title for Blaney’s crew chief Jonathan Hassler, whose first stint as a Cup crew chief was on the No. 21 Ford in 2021. Blaney drove for the Wood Brothers from 2015-2017 and delivered the team its 99th win at Pocono in his final season aboard the No. 21 Ford.
Team Penske, which fields three Cup entries including the No. 12 team of Blaney and Hassler, shares an alliance with the Wood Brothers and the No. 21 team.
“All of us here at Wood Brothers Racing are really happy for Ryan, Jonathan, everyone on the No. 12 team and all their families,” Eddie Wood said. “Every team starts the season hoping to win a championship, but it’s extremely difficult to actually do it.
“To see people we’ve worked with accomplish what they did makes us very proud. They were – and still are – part of our Wood Brothers racing family.”
Wood also congratulated team owner Roger Penske,Team Penske and all the people at Ford Performance for their second-straight title in NASCAR’s elite division.
“It’s a victory for all of us in the Ford camp,” he said.
Burton and the No. 21 team will return to the track on Feb. 4 for the non-points Clash at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. The points-paying, season-opening Daytona 500 gets the green flag on Feb. 18.

| TEAM CHEVY RACE WINNER QUOTE:Ross Chastain, No. 1 Worldwide Express Camaro ZL1Finished: 1st“For me, for everybody with Worldwide Express, to end the season like this. We lost Rob Rose (of Worldwide Express) last year, but it’s his vision that started this program. Really for Advent Health, Moose, Jockey, Kubota, all of our partners, there were some questionable times this year, and as we went, we continued to fight and prepare the same. There were some tough days and nights, and sleepless nights, but it made us even hungrier and we brought the thunder this weekend.” Talk about racing with the championship contenders…“That last caution saved me. We were way too tight. Phil Surgen, these boys and girls, Michael Hann, our whole sim group, General Motors’ sim group, the whole workforce of 140-plus employees at Trackhouse, came up with a way to make this hot rod turn. She turned that last run, and drove off into the sunset.” |
| TEAM CHEVY CHAMPIONSHIP FOUR: POST-RACE QUOTES |
| Kyle Larson, No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1Finished: 3rd“(Ryan Blaney’s) car was really fast, really for the last few months especially here today. Our pit crew and pit road just really kept us in the game. We weren’t really the greatest on the track but I was hoping for pit stops because I knew the way our team executed our lights, and the way our pit crew can execute a fast pit stop, I knew that that was our only shot really to win. They did everything in their power to give us the winning job done there. A huge thank you to them. I needed to come out the leader on that restart. Ross (Chastain) got a really good start from the second row, and was hoping I could’ve got clear of Denny (Hamlin) and get the lead and have Ross (Chastain) protect behind me. I’m not really sure that would’ve made a difference, really. I was just not as good as a few guys, especially (Ryan) Blaney and Ross (Chastain) probably. It would’ve been difficult, but my team did a really good job all season. I’m extremely proud of them. We had an up and down year, and we finally put together two solid weeks in a row. I don’t know if we’ve done that all year. A huge thank you to HendrickCars.com, Team Chevy, Valvoline, Jinya Ramen Bar, everybody back at Hendrick Motorsports, the engine shop, everyone. We’ll come back next year and try to be stronger.” Ryan Blaney made a point in his interview to talk about how respectful you and the two other contenders raced….“I tried to take as much as I could in turns one and two to see if I could do anything just because (Ryan Blaney) was a lot faster. He was behind me a number of times during the race and never touched me, so I would say, for me and my respect level, it started with him. He raced with a lot of respect early on in the race. He always has, too. It was fun watching Ryan (Blaney), and William (Byron), and (Christopher) Bell kind of when he was still out there, us all racing hard. A lot of fun there, and congrats to Ryan (Blaney) – he’s a deserving champion. Him and his team have done an amazing job. It’s been fun to come up through the ranks with him, and now see him as a champion. Congrats to Team Penske and their whole team, and we’ll try to beat them next year.” |
| William Byron, No. 24 Axalta Camaro ZL1Finished: 4thYou dominated the beginning parts of this race. Around Stage Two, it seemed to get away from you guys. “Yeah, once the track rubbered in, we got really tight, especially when we lost the lead. We just had a big balance shift and got tight back in second through fifth and just couldn’t gain a lot of speed through (turns) one and two, and just had to really over slow the car to get it to the bottom. That’s all we had there. Just really proud of this No. 24 Axalta Chevy team. It’s been a great season. It stinks to come up short, but I’d like to think we’re going to be back in this position and we’re going to have more shots at it. We just have to keep working. Keep working on the short-track program for us – that’s definitely been the tough part of our season. But I felt like we brought a good car this weekend, and really until the track changed, I thought we were in the game. Just all we had there.” What was it like racing with Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson? You guys were so close at times and you know you’re racing for the win, but also for a championship. “Yeah, I feel like we all raced really hard. I felt like in Stage One and Two, I could kind of take Ryan’s (Blaney) lane away a little bit and get him tight. And then once he got in front of us, it was really hard to chase him back down. With (Kyle) Larson, I thought we were pretty even. We came off pit road and he did a good job the last run. They had more speed than us the last run. The last run of the race, we were pretty tight there. Like I said, just really proud of this team. We’ve had a great season and there’s a lot to be proud of, and we’re going to keep digging hard.” |

20RT IN 2023: Thornton Jr. Caps World Finals with Second-Straight Win, Pierce Celebrates Championship
CONCORD, NC (Nov. 4, 2023) – Ricky Thornton Jr. has had an unforgettable year – one he made sure he and the SSI Motorsports team will never forget, going back-to-back to cap the 2023 World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model Series season Saturday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
Thornton’s 33rd overall Feature win on the national dirt Late Model scene this year was one of his most impressive, wheeling the Dyno One, Longhorn/Clements No. 20RT from 10th on the starting grid up to the lead in 27 laps to bank the $25,000 grand prize in the World of Outlaws World Finals finale.
Race after race, track after track, big payday after big payday, Thornton and the SSI Motorsports team have dominated 2023. But as they closed out the season with Thornton’s fourth career World of Outlaws victory and third this year, surely, they’ve had a moment to let all their accomplishments soak in, right?
“Definitely not,” Thornton said. “My guys bust their butts. You figure every down day is a day you’re not getting better.”
One thing Thornton got much better at over the four-day race weekend – far more than any other driver – was getting around on the high side. Early on in the 50-lap main event, Thornton began ripping the top line around the 4/10-mile, red clay oval and worked his way up to third by Lap 17.
“I started losing track of the guys on the bottom,” Thornton said. “I’m like, ‘You know what, the top looks pretty good.’ I could see [Brandon] Sheppard running up there and figured if I was gonna have a shot to win it, I just gotta go now.”
Soon, Thornton had closed in on the rear bumper of Chris Madden and dove underneath him in a bid for second going into Turn 3 on Lap 24. He slid up in front of Madden out of Turn 4 to seal the pass and immediately set his sights on leader Cade Dillard, who was less than a second ahead.
In only three laps, Thornton reeled Dillard in and put the same move on him as he did for Madden with a deep dive down low going into Turn 3, then sliding back up in front of him out of Turn 4 to take the lead.
Now with the lead, it seemed like nothing could slow Thornton’s pace – not even the race’s only caution flag with 33 laps complete. He and Madden broke away from the field on the ensuing restart and battled side-by-side for the top spot briefly, but Thornton was too quick.
By this time, Mike Marlar had climbed back up into the top three, getting by Dale McDowell for third on Lap 37. After catching his rear bumper, Marlar as well dove underneath Madden in Turn 3 to grab second out of Turn 4.
He closed slightly in the final laps, but Marlar came up one spot short of his third career win at Charlotte. Madden hung on for third while McDowell and Garrett Smith completed the top five.
Crossing the line behind Smith in sixth was Bobby Pierce, who had drove up from 11th on the starting grid and was later crowned with his first dirt Late Model national championship in his first season aboard the World of Outlaws tour.
Pierce, the second-generation racer from Oakwood, IL, had mathematically clinched the points title Wednesday after taking the green flag in Qualifying, which put him more at ease racing against 74 other cars throughout the weekend.
“This has been a great weekend for us, just learning this track,” Pierce said. “But I definitely wouldn’t have liked to head into this deal with a tight point battle. We were very relaxed.”
At 26 years old, Pierce already solidified himself as an undeniable talent several years ago with his abundance of DIRTcar Late Model national points titles, DIRTcar Summer Nationals titles and several marquee event wins at the national level – most notably his win in the 2016 World 100 at Eldora Speedway at the age of 18.
Now, he’s a national Late Model series champion. But even with all of those accomplishments as such a young age, he said he’s nowhere close to being done.
“It’s definitely an uplifting thing to know,” Pierce said. “I’ve got a lot more years to go – just a lot more years to learn. Heck, a lot of times, you don’t figure things out ‘til late in your life. I feel like, especially this weekend, taught me there’s lot I have to learn still.
“We’re gonna come back next year, try to get another one. See how many of these we can get.”
While the points championship stayed locked-up over the weekend, the battle for fourth and several thousands of dollars in points fund checks was settled.
Kyle Bronson came into the weekend holding the fourth spot and retained it with a 10th-place finish in Saturday’s Feature. 2023 Germfree Rookie of the Year Nick Hoffman finished seventh Saturday and advanced two spots in points up to fifth.
While Brian Shirley’s ran 22nd Saturday, he did retain sixth place in points after jumping up one spot earlier in the week, and Ryan Gustin fell two points positions after taking a DNF Saturday. Dennis Erb Jr. jumped up one spot in points to eighth, while Tanner English rolled back to ninth after a trying weekend of no finishes better than 20th.

Eight possible runs, one more race, to show the world that we are Elite for a reason.”

This crew is incredible and I’ve gained a lot of confidence as a driver. Hopefully, we can put it all together and finish the season with a great performance.”
Cristian Cuadra“I’m thrilled to be in the Top Ten coming into the Finals. Because we are competing for points and a half, anything can happen this weekend. We’ve got to be on our game in order to keep our position. The pressure is going to be intense but we are just going to focus on what we can control.”
I know they will give me a car that will go from A to B and I hope we can surprise a few people this weekend by making some solid runs in the 3.70’s.”
