Late-Race Incident Spoils Potential Top-10 Finish for Ben Kennedy

“Our No. 2 Rheem Chevrolet was good all day long, running in the top 10 for a majority of the race. We seemed to keep restarting in the worst of the two lanes, which would shove us back in the field and force us to fight for positions in some of the tougher spots on the track. I was learning a lot out there about road course racing until we got collected in one of the late-race wrecks, cutting our day short. That was a tough one. I’m looking forward to getting back in this No. 2 Chevy in a couple weeks at Road America.”
– Ben Kennedy

Scott Lagasse Comes Back to Finish After a Spin in Closing Laps of Mid-Ohio Challenge

“It was a really challenging day in the SCREEN YOUR MACHINE/American Cancer Society Chevrolet today. These guys worked really hard to get our Camaro handling how we needed it to. It was tight on exit for most of the race, and we made adjustments each time we hit pit road to loosen it up. We were going to get a good run out of today until we just got punted with a few laps to go and spun off the track. I’m thankful for the effort from this team. I’m frustrated that I couldn’t get them the finish we deserved.”

– Scott Lagasse

Daniel Hemric Brings Home an impressive Second-Place Finish in Mid-Ohio

“The whole goal or our team coming to Mid-Ohio was to maximize our day in the Blue Gate Bank Chevrolet, put ourselves in a good position and run all of the laps. We were able to do all of that in what was only my fourth road-course race ever in a stock car. We had a pretty solid day from the start of the race, and we kept the fenders on it. As all road-course races go, people get more and more aggressive as the laps wind down. That’s fine if you start on the front row, but we restarted the third row back a couple of times, and that’s when you start to run into the accordion stack-up. We ran into that a couple of times but were fortunate enough to get out of it. I’m proud of our effort and that we were able to a real shot there at the end. My guys did a great day on pit road sending me out leading after the money stop that mattered to start the final segment. We battled hard with the 22 car all afternoon, and I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to make it happen in the end. I left everything that I had on the race track though, and this entire team should be proud of what we did today.”

– Daniel Hemric

Brandon Jones Avoids Road-Course Chaos to Finish 14th at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

“These road course races are some of the craziest races I’ve ever been in. Today was no different. Nick (Harrison, crew chief) put together a strategy for the No. 33 Bali / Menards Chevrolet team that had us pitting early to make it through the first two stages without any additional stops. We executed it well at the start of the day. Unfortunately, the tires didn’t hold as much grip as we thought they would, which forced us to change our game plan and pit more often than we wanted. There were a couple close calls for us on pit road, but my team never gave up. We kept our heads up, made it clean through the string of late-race cautions and came home with a top-15 finish.”

– Brandon Jones

Brendan Gaughan Makes Incredible Save to Finish Seventh at Mid-Ohio

“We had a really good shot at the win with our No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet today, but the No. 22 car took us out of it at the end there. I have to give my thanks to Shane (Wilson, crew chief) and the boys on putting together this awesome race car they gave me today, That last save was probably one of the most amazing saves I’ve ever had in my 20-plus year NASCAR career. Those are the kinds of saves we learn racing out in the desert, and it came in handy today. ”

Joe Swanson Tops SOD Driven Racing Oil Battlegrounds Bash at Butler Motor Speedway

ERIE, MI (July 23, 2017) – Joe Swanson won a hard fought battle with Jay Steinebach to win Saturday’s Engine Pro Sprints On Dirt presented by ARP Driven Racing Oil Battlegrounds Bash at Butler Motor Speedway.
Swanson (Etna Green, Indiana) started from the pole, but a lap one red for a Shebly Bilton and Andy Chehowski crash on the back straightaway, and a quick caution for Tyler Bearden’s spin halted action quickly. Once back under green, Swanson took the lead over Tim Evilsizer. Boston Mead took 2nd on lap 7, then Steinebach took the spot on the next lap. Steinebach was getting faster as Swanson battled traffic and on lap 16 he shot by the leader and opened up a small lead. On lap 18 the caution flew for Tyler Rankin’s spin. Steinebach held the lead in spite of heavy pressure from Swanson through lap 22 when the caution came out for Doug Zimmerman’s spin. Swanson charged into 1st on lap 23 and led the final 2 laps to win the epic battle.

COMP Cams heat race winner Boston Mead suffered a broken rocker arm at the end of his heat race and SOD point leader suffered the same fate while leading the Engler Machine & Tool heat. While it looked like both drivers were done for the night, they borrowed the parts needed to run the feature and their perseverance paid off. Mead started 3rd and finished 4th. Irwin started 22nd and charged to a 6th place finish, easily winning the KSE Hard Charger Award.

Doug Zimmerman led the 27-car field in qualifying with a 13.272 lap.

The SOD program was completed with typical SOD efficiency through the combined efforts of SOD competitors and Butler Motor Speedway officials.

Auto Club driver Robert Hight No. 2 at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (June 17) – Robert Hight turned in what he called the run of the year Saturday in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS, and will start No. 2 for Sunday’s NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

Hight’s run in the third session, and first of two passes Saturday, was 4.023 seconds at 311.77 mph, in ambient temperatures in the mid-80s and on a track exceeding 130 degrees. While none of the drivers in the Funny Car field challenged Friday night’s qualification runs, Hight said it was the “run of the year” because of the weather and track conditions. Quick Facts about Historic Baer Field Motorsports Park SOD Race

ERIE, MI (May 23, 2017) – After being rained out Saturday, Engine Pro Sprints On Dirt presented by ARP headlined the first-ever race on Fort Wayne, Indian’s Baer Field Motorsports Park new dirt track on Sunday night for the first race of SOD’s MAHLE/Clevite Beyond KLimits Challenge five-race series. Numerous facts about the event make it a truly historical event for both Baer Field Motorsports Park and Sprints On Dirt.

New ¼ mile track
The track crew put out a massive effort to make sure the Sunday race could take place. Several inches of rain resulted in the track being referred to as “Baer Lake” Sunday morning, then more rain came. The infield was pumped out and against all odds, the track was prepped for racing. Promoter Dave Muzzillo could have easily thrown in the towel, but was determined to get the race in.

Andrew Scheid
Thirteen-year-old Andrew Scheid, a SOD sprint car rookie of the year contender, raced a full-size sprint for the first time and drew many compliments. After qualifying seventh in his heat group, Scheid finished last in his heat. He then grabbed a fourth in the B Main to advance to the feature where he finished eighteenth, dropping out early in consideration of the fast field. Andrew dodged a few incidents that developed in front of him. He even executed a successful 360 degree spin to avoid a car that had spun to a stop in front of him.

Scheid has extensive racing experience and numerous wins in karts and lightning sprints.

Diverse field
The SOD “beyond limits” format continues to have broad appeal for race teams from many segments of sprint car racing.

Winner Valenti and Dan McCarron are currently regulars in the 410 class at Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway. Valenti has has had great success in thunderstocks and dirt trucks in Ohio and Indiana.

2nd-place finisher Joe Swanson, 5th place Steve Irwin, and 6th place Brad Wyatt have had success in winged sprint pavement racing. Irwin has won pavement championships and #71H car owner Steve Smith has also won pavement championships as an owner.

3rd place Landon Simon is a successful USAC competitor who ran his first winged sprint race Sunday. Irwin and Wyatt also have extensive non-wing experience.

4th place Thomas Schinderle previously raced modifieds, then was a regular in the Attica/Fremont FAST 305 class.

Matt Prieur
Matt Prieur & Shawn ValentiSOD rookie announcer Matt Prieur got his first SOD race in Sunday. The former World of Outlaws late model announcer is also the announcer for the American Ethanol Late Model Tour, the American Ethanol Modified Tour, and occasional pavement races.

Prieur has been a hockey referee for 24 years. He has also been the color commentator for an Ontario Hockey League game.

Prieur has been announcing since 1989.

MCRP/SOD Safety Crew

SOD competitors got their first look at the MCRP safety crew. They were quick to assist in any on-track incidents.

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 20) — Two-time Pro Mod champion Troy Coughlin posted his quickest pass of the weekend in the opening round of the 29th annual Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties, but the pass wasn’t enough to turn on his win light in the always-tough J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series.

“I said earlier in the year that I was super happy we added two races to the Pro Mod schedule this year because it would afford us a little bit of breathing room,” Coughlin said. “When you’re racing at this level you can run really well and still lose. That’s what happened today, so I’m glad we have extra time to make up for this loss. Continue reading Best pass of event not enough for two-time Pro Mod champ Troy Coughlin to advance

Race Updates
At the Belle Rose NHRA Divisional we went to the third round in the Super Stocker and the final round in the Stocker. It was a rare AA/SA heads up final where we came up short. Interestingly enough, it was our second heads up in Stock at the event. Running two cars gets busy and thankfully our engine builder, Allen Sherman
was on hand to help get the car ready. We did what we could to prepare the car before having to head to the staging lanes to run Super Stock. When we got back to our pits, it looked like a NASCAR pit as we had 5 people working on the car. Thankfully, Brenda did her job on the starting line and won the round, beating her opponent in a big hole shot.

We didn’t have any luck at the Houston National event, loosing first round in
both cars. A nice picture of the Super Stocker was posted on Drag Race Central.
The Dallas Divisional was a break through race for the Super Stocker as we finally
got the tire spin under control. Eliminations brought a 30 degree temperature
change from qualifying. Taking air changes into account the car was dialed well.
However, the car really hooked and came out of the hole like a bullet. Even though
a huge amount of ET/MPH were scrubbed we still broke out more than our opponent. This was the first confirmation we had overcome the Super Stocker tire spin that had been plaguing us. We did
better in Stock, getting to the third round where we met another AA/SA. Brenda had the light and the performance however the car was set up a bit too aggressively with the tire pressure and spun at the launch.
April was a good month and in Stock we are currently #3 in Division 4.

The column featuring Stock Eliminator driver Allison Smyth was published in the April 21, 2017 issue of National Dragster. There’s something to learn from every practice session on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in preparation for the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Even with a steady 30 mph headwind on the frontstretch and stiff crosswind in the turns, Chevrolet drivers benefitted from track time while others concentrated on pit stop practice.

Twenty-one competitors logged 408 laps, which was down significantly from the 2,404 laps recorded by 32 drivers a day earlier, as Chevrolet teams continued to work on race aerodynamic set-ups of the Chevrolet aerokit with V6 2.2-liter Chevrolet engines.
