Scelzi and car owner Bernie Stuebgen opened the competition on Friday by qualifying seventh quickest out of more than 50 competitors during a preliminary night for the 29th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank. Menard Finishes 18th At The Glen

Paul Menard and the No. 21 Menards/Dutch Boy Paints Ford Mustang came away with an 18th-place finish in Sunday’s Go Bowling at the Glen.

Menard started the 90-lap race on the historic Watkins Glen road course from 22nd place and moved up to 16th in the opening 20-lap Stage.

In Stage Two, he wound up 20th as team began putting their strategy in place for the finish of the race.

During the final 50-lap segment, Menard and the Menards/Dutch Boy team elected to run long before making their final pit stop, a move that, if events played out in their favor, would have put them at an advantage tire-wise in the closing laps.

Menard cycled into the lead and held the top spot for three laps before the yellow flag flew on Lap 63 for an incident between Kyle Busch and Bubba Wallace.

The caution flag foiled the No. 21 team’s strategy, so Menard made his pit stop at that point and worked his way back to 18th at the finish.

Track officials announced before the race that the event drew a sold-out grandstand crowd with thousands more watching from their campsites spread all along the 2.45-mile race course.

“Our strategy didn’t work out due to the last caution and that cost us a few spots,” Wood said. “But I was happy for the folks at Watkins Glen. They’ve built a good fan base here, and having a sellout crowd is a big achievement for NASCAR as a whole.”

Menard and the Wood Brothers team now head to Michigan International Speedway for next week’s Consumers Energy 400.

CORVETTE RACING AT ROAD AMERICA: Another Hard-Luck Afternoon
ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. (Aug. 4, 2019) – Luck wasn’t on the side of Corvette Racing on Sunday as the team logged fourth- and sixth-place finishes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Road Race Showcase at Road America.

Both Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs led the GT Le Mans (GTLM) category and were in contention for the program’s 100thh victory in IMSA competition. Ultimately, however, the race and fortune went against Corvette Racing as it went for an eighth class victory at the circuit.

Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen posted Corvette Racing’s best finish in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R with race pole-winner Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner two spots behind in the No. 4 Corvette C7.R. Austin Dillon and The No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Team Battle All Day at Watkins Glen International

“Road course racing has never been our forte, but we headed into Watkins Glen International with high hopes of using all of the tools at our disposal to earn a solid finish in the Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. It was a struggle to gain track position after starting further back in the field than we had hoped, but I’m so proud of this Richard Childress Racing team because they never gave up. Throughout the race, I listened to my team as they gave feedback to help me hit my marks throughout the seven-turn road course. They also made great adjustments throughout the race to help with a tight-handling condition. In the end, we couldn’t overcome the lack of forward drive and ended up finishing just outside the top-30. We have work to do on the road courses, and this team deserves better. We’re resetting and heading to Michigan International Speedway next week with a goal of earning a win and punching our ticket into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.”

Incident in Bus Stop Hurts Daniel Hemric’s First Watkins Glen Start with Caterpillar Chevrolet

“This was not how we saw today going with this Caterpillar Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The car took off well when the green flag flew and we were making progress after the first few stops of the day. I had some issues with the brakes after we got some grass on the ducts, and with about 50 laps to go they gave up on me going into the Bus Stop and I got into Ty Dillon. That sent his car through the grass and my car slid into the tire barrier with the left side. These guys on pit road did all they could to make repairs and get the car competitive again, but the time we spent on pit road put us multiple laps down. We’ll move on from this and focus forward as we head to Michigan next week.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 SCORE VICTORY AT THE GLEN

WATKINS GLEN, NY (August 4, 2019) – With a strong showing in every category throughout the two-day Go Bowling at The Glen Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race (MENCS), Chase Elliott capped the weekend in his No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Camaro ZL1 by capturing his second victory of the 2019 season.

Elliott won the pole position, both Stages 1 and 2, and the final 90-lap event itself on the 3.4-mile road course, to mark his second consecutive win at the challenging 11-turn race track and fifth of his MENCS career.

The victory is also the fifth of the season for Chevrolet, the 19th for the brand at Watkins Glen International, and 784th all-time win for the Bowtie in NASCAR’s premier series.

Martin Truex, Jr. (Toyota) was second, Denny Hamlin (Toyota) finished third, Erik Jones (Toyota) was fourth, and Ryan Blaney (Ford) was fifth to round out the Top 5.

Honda Plans to Race with Hybrid Powertrains in INDYCAR Racing in 2022 Season

• New hybrid system will help deliver more than 900 horsepower to IndyCars

• Decision parallels addition of hybrid systems across Honda product lineup

TORRANCE, Calif – Aug. 5 – Honda today applauded the announcement by INDYCAR that it will introduce hybrid powertrains to race cars in the NTT IndyCar Series for the 2022 season. The plan to begin using hybrid powertrains in a pinnacle racing series like INDYCAR parallels a recent announcement from Honda that it would expand application of hybrid electric systems throughout the Honda product lineup in the coming years.
“Racing has long been a crucible for the development of new technologies and people at Honda and this direction will enable us to promote a technology through racing that is essential to the future of our automobile business,” said Ted Klaus, president of Honda Performance Development. “At the same time, the immediate response delivered by an electrified powertrain will improve vehicle performance for our IndyCar drivers and the quality of the competitive show for our great fans.”
As announced by INDYCAR Aug. 1, the hybrid powertrain will work in parallel with the internal combustion engines from Honda and Chevrolet, combining growing hybrid technology with the traditional power plants to produce in excess of 900 horsepower for the most competitive racing series in the world.

Megan Meyer Locks In Third Straight Lucas Oil Regional Championship After Winning Rescheduled Tulsa Race

Megan Meyer, daughter of World Champion team-owner and driver, Randy Meyer, successfully defended her Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Championship in Tulsa, OK this past weekend. Megan successfully earned the Central Region Championship in 2017 and 2018, after earning Rookie of the Year in 2016. Megan is also the three-time Regional Driver of the Year award recipient.

AUSTIN CINDRIC WINS HIS FIRST CAREER XFINITY SERIES RACE

WATKINS GLEN, NY – August 5, 2019 – Austin Cindric won his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series race this season, winning the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International, in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford Mustang. Cindric, became the youngest driver in series history to win at a road course at age 20.

“Congratulations Austin, Tim, Roger and Brian Wilson,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “Austin drove an incredible race and displayed his driving experience in those last nine laps. Brian and Austin were well prepared with their race strategy and they executed flawlessly for the win. It’s great to see all three Ford Performance drivers with wins this year as we approach the 2019 Xfinity Series playoffs.”

Cindric in the No. 22 Ford Mustang was in the lead on lap 69, when his crew chief called him to pit road during the sixth caution of the race for fresh tires. After restarting in ninth, on lap 73, Cindric began working his way through the field. After another quick caution on lap 76, Cindric restarted sixth and quickly moved into second place behind the race leader. On lap 81, during an intense battle, Cindric was able to nudge the leader and took the lead.

“AJ is a hell of a race car driver, so I knew it wasn’t going to be easy even if we got there with way newer tires,” Cindric said. “I’m just so blessed and appreciative of this kind of an opportunity at this stage, racing these types of race cars, and I hope this is first of many.”

All four Ford Performance drivers finished in the top 10 at Watkins Glen International, Team Penske teammates Austin Cindric in P1 and Ryan Blaney in P4 while Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Chase Briscoe finished P6 and Cole Custer P7.

In the Monster Energy NASCAR Series Race, Ryan Blaney, from Team Penske, finished P5 in the GoBowling at the Glen. Ford teammates Kevin Harvick finished in P7, Brad Keselowski in P9, and Aric Almirola in P12.
