Paul Menard Back with Showtime Motorsports as Trans Am Summer Heats Up

Elkhart Lake, WISCONSIN – June 30, 2022 – The Franklin Road Apparel Showtime Motorsports team will head for the second stint of the midsummer doubleheader this weekend coming from Mid Ohio to Road America, July 1-3. Team principal Ken Thwaits is sitting in a fine second place in the Driver Championship and NASCAR ace Paul Menard will be looking to continue from where he left off at Charlotte and win again. In TA2, former Champion Cameron Lawrence is in P5 in the standings just seven points off Conor Mosack in P3 and will be looking for better luck out in Elkhart Lake. Menard will be piloting the No. 5 Franklin Road Apparel Chevrolet Camaro, a fantastic black and yellow Chevrolet Camaro TA1 expertly prepared by the Showtime Motorsports team and benefitting from the new braking system debuted by teammate Ken Thwaits at Ohio. We spoke to Ken ahead of the weekend’s action on what is another huge Trans Am outing for the Tennessee based outfit.  “We’re really looking forward to Road America big time. It’s great to have Paul back,” mentioned Ken Thwaits. “You never quite know how a new car will perform in competition but in testing at VIR Paul broke the track record so it can’t be too bad. It’s a real bumper weekend for the fans with all the NASCAR racing as well. Last year this event sold out and the atmosphere was amazing. This place is something special.” Referencing Cameron Lawrence in the TA2 Class he added, “Our TA2 car is a fast car. We didn’t get a chance to show people what it can do at Ohio but hopefully we’ll get a clear track here and then we’ll see. We just don’t want a repeat of last weekend with a spoiled race.” Located in Wisconsin’s scenic Kettle Moraine, Elkhart Lake’s Road America is one of the world’s fastest permanent road racing tracks. The 640-acre, park-like grounds offer amazing viewing opportunities, fantastic concessions, and high-speed excitement to thousands of spectators each year. Road America is also one of a handful of road circuits in the world maintaining its original configuration being 4.048 miles in length with 14 turns, hence Saturday’s race is over just 25 laps. The track features many elevation changes, along with a long front stretch where speeds near 200mph can be achieved. One of the best-known features of this course is a turn on the backside known as “the kink.” Billed as the Ryan Companies presents the Trans Am 100s at Road America, the schedule for the weekend features the NASCAR Cup Series KWIK TRIP 250 presented by JOCKEY Made in America on July 3 joined by the NASCAR XFINITY Series Henry 180 on July 2. Together with the Trans Am presented by Pirelli series and the Mazda MX-5 Cup means multiple races during the weekend. A busy schedule that includes TA qualifications at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1 with the TA race going green at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. The TA2 Drivers practice at 2:00 p.m. on Friday with qualifying in two groups from 8:10 a.m. on Saturday. The TA2 race goes green at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 3.  Kids 16 and under get free general admission to all Road America season racing events with a paying adult at the gate even for the NASCAR Cup Series!  Highlights of the action will again be presented on the CBS Sports Network. NMRA Shifts Silver Anniversary Season Opener To Orlando Speed World In 2023

Santa Ana, CA (June 30, 2022) As the Holley NMRA Ford Nationals embarks on its 25th anniversary, the series shifts its iconic Spring Break Shootout season opener to Orlando Speed World in 2023, diversifying the event with even more Blue Oval action. “It’s become clear that modern Ford fans demand motorsport variety, and we plan to celebrate NMRA’s 25th-anniversary tour by bringing the festival atmosphere of our World Finals to the season opener in Orlando, Florida,” explains Steve Wolcott, Founder & CEO of NMRA. “Our fans love drag racing, but we need to offer even more motorsport action around the event. Our move to OSW opens the door to the most exciting Spring Break Shootout yet!” In addition to NMRA Ford drag racing action on the quarter-mile at Orlando Speed World, the facility’s oval track area allows for a host of other activities, including Australian-style burnout contests, an autocross competition, drift exhibitions, and much more.  “We keep improving our multi-use facility to make way for events like NMRA to come to Orlando…” said Ozzy Moya, owner of Orlando Speed World. “We have a popular quarter-mile drag strip and our oval track has been used for sprint car racing and has been home to Formula Drift for the last six years. We’ve done concerts in the oval, and we’ve done a lot of different stuff over there, opening the avenue for future endeavors.” As home to some of the longest-running door-slammer events in the country, OSW is ready to host NMRA drag racing again for the first time in decades. With heads-up drag racing, index classes, True Street action, a huge UPR Products All-Ford car show, a massive manufacturer’s midway, a used-parts swap meet, and several new offerings, the NMRA season opener is set for a triumphant return to Orlando. “Since I purchased Orlando, it’s one of the events I wanted to see come back,” said Moya. “NMRA raced here in 2001 and to see the series return to where it all started is pretty cool.” “We can’t wait to bring our NMRA Spring Break Shootout to Orlando Speed World,” said Rollie Miller, ProMedia General Manager and National Event Director. “Ozzy and his team at OSW are invested in growing and promoting motorsport events at a facility that is primed to increase our NMRA motorsport offerings.”  The Holley NMRA Ford Nationals kicks off its 25th-anniversary season at Orlando Speed World with its iconic NMRA Spring Break Shootout running from March 2-5, 2023.

TEAM CHEVY ADVANCE KWIK TRIP 250 PRESENTED BY JOCKEY MADE IN AMERICA

ROAD AMERICA ELKHART LAKE, WISCONSIN JULY 3, 2022
RACE #18 – ROAD AMERICAA NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) doubleheader is on tap for the upcoming holiday weekend, with the series’ stars taking on the longest track in NASCAR: the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course circuit of Road America. Coming off wins in both divisions last weekend, Chevrolet teams seek to carry the Bowtie brand’s momentum over to the left- and right-hand turns of the Wisconsin road course.  Road America made its return to the NASCAR Cup Series schedule in 2021, marking the first time the series made an appearance at the venue since its inaugural season in 1956. Chevrolet’s Chase Elliott added another tally on his road course win count in the series’ return to the circuit by showcasing his road course racing skills from a 34th starting spot and piloting his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to his seventh career road course victory in NASCAR’s premier series. Known as a road course favorite, the victory brought Elliott to third on the all-time NCS road course wins list, sitting behind NASCAR Hall of Famers Jeff Gordon (nine) and Tony Stewart (eight).  The NASCAR Xfinity Series made its Road America debut in 2010. In the series’ 12 races at the venue, Chevrolet has made its way to victory lane a manufacturer-leading seven times. Road course master AJ Allmendinger has gone two-for-two in road course wins this season, most recently at Portland International Raceway (June 4, 2022). The victory marked the Kaulig Racing driver’s third consecutive NXS road course win – a feat that ties the series’ record previously recorded by Terry Labonte.  ON A ROAD COURSE STREAKChevrolet has proven to be the one to beat in NASCAR Cup Series road racing competition. Heading into the race weekend, the Bowtie is riding a streak of eight-consecutive NCS road course victories… an accomplishment that started with Chase Elliott’s victory at Circuit of The Americas in March 2021. Most recently adding to the Chevrolet road course win list was Daniel Suarez, who recorded his first career win in NASCAR’s premier series at Sonoma Raceway earlier in June.
VICTORIOUS IN MUSIC CITYSome might have thought that an issue on pit road midway through the race might have taken the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team out of contention, but a resurgence by Chase Elliott in the final stage proved otherwise. Taking the lead for the final time on lap 262, Elliott was out front when a late-race caution flew, with pit strategy coming into play. Crew Chief Alan Gustafson opted to take track position, keeping Elliott out front for a four-lap dash to the finish, with the No. 9 Camaro ZL1 taking the checkered flag first. The win marked Elliott’s second of 2022, making the 26-year-old Georgia native just the fifth repeat winner thus far this season. Elliott’s victory was the ninth for Chevrolet in 17 points-paying races, giving the manufacturer a 66.7 win percentage heading into the Road America race weekend. CAMARO SS HITS DOUBLE DIGIT WINSReturning from two consecutive NASCAR Xfinity Series off weeks, JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier kept the Chevrolet win streak alive at Nashville Superspeedway. In dominating fashion, Allgaier piloted his No. 7 Camaro SS to a sweep of the stage wins, leading a race-high 134 laps led en route to his second victory of 2022 and the 18th in his NXS career. Allgaier has now recorded multiple wins in the last three season; and five of the last six dating back to the 2017 season. Allgaier’s victory marked the 10th win for the Camaro SS in 15 NASCAR Xfinity Series races this season. This also includes a seven-race win streak dating back to Noah Gragson’s win at Talladega Superspeedway in April. Allgaier led Chevrolet to four top-10 finishes, including his JR Motorsports teammate, Sam Mayer, in fifth; NXS rookie Austin Hill in eighth; and Brett Moffitt rounding out the top-10 in his No. 02 Our Motorsports Camaro SS.
NCS REGULAR SEASON: NINE-TO-GOThe NASCAR Cup Series is down to a single-digit count of races left in the series’ regular season, increasing the focus on the playoff standings. Following his Nashville Superspeedway triumph, 2020 NCS Champion Chase Elliott stayed atop the driver points standings for the 13th-consecutive week, extending his lead to a 30-point advantage over second-place Ross Chastain. Elliott also now sits at a three-way tie with Chevrolet drivers Ross Chastain and William Byron for the most playoff points accumulated thus far with 13.  In pursuit of defending its NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Championship title, Chevrolet continues to build its cushion as the leader in the manufacturer points standings with now 47 points. Sitting at nine wins on the season, Chevrolet has now more than double the amount of wins over its manufacturer competitors. The bowtie brand also continues to lead all manufacturers in top-fives (40), top-10s (77), laps led (2,375) and stage wins (16).
ALLMENDINGER, CHEVROLET REMAINS ON TOPWhile it might not have been the day he had hoped for, AJ Allmendinger remained in the lead of the NASCAR Xfinity Series driver points standings with a 25-point lead over second. Chevrolet drivers occupy five of the top-six spots in the driver standings, including Nashville Superspeedway race winner Justin Allgaier, who moved up the NXS playoff grid to third and 32 points out of the lead. Allgaier’s JR Motorsports teammates follow right behind him, with Noah Gragson, Josh Berry and Sam Mayer sitting in the fourth through sixth positions, respectively. Mayer remains in the first points-qualifying position in the standings, with his eighth top-five finish in the last 10 races building his playoff cutline cushion to 162 points.  Looking for its sixth-consecutive NASCAR Xfinity Series Manufacturer Championship title, Chevrolet continues to pull away in the manufacturer standing’s lead, now sitting at a 72-point lead over second. Eight drivers from four different Chevrolet teams have contributed to those points thus far.
DOUBLE DUTY IN WISCONSINA handful of drivers will take on the 4.048-mile Wisconsin road course for both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Cup Series races, including four Chevrolet drivers:  ·       2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson will make his return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series for the first time since 2018, marking his 109th career start in the series. Larson will be piloting the No. 17 HendrickCars.com Camaro SS, an entry fielded by Hendrick Motorsports. The Chevrolet team will be returning to the series for the first time since 2009, with three races currently on the schedule for the No. 17 Camaro SS: Road America, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course and Watkins Glen International. Larson has 12 NXS wins on his resume, with his most recent coming in his last start in the series at Bristol Motor Speedway (August 2018). His interim Cup crew chief, Kevin Meendering, will also be pulling double duty this weekend handling the crew chief duties for Larson in both series.
·       Tyler Reddick will be piloting the No. 48 Big Machine Racing Camaro SS again this weekend, marking his fourth NASCAR Xfinity Series start of 2022. Reddick has 10 career NXS wins to his name, the most recent last month at Texas Motor Speedway when the 26-year-old Chevrolet driver delivered Big Machine Racing its first win in the series.
·       Ty Dillon will be making his first NASCAR Xfinity Series start of 2022 at Road America driving the No. 6 Camaro SS for JD Motorsports. In his 157-career NXS starts, Dillon has recorded one win, 34 top-five’s and 91 top-10’s.  ·       Looking to go three-for-three in NASCAR Xfinity Series road course wins in 2022, AJ Allmendinger will also be taking his road course racing skills to the NASCAR Cup Series field on Sunday in the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro ZL1. Allmendinger has two-career NCS wins, both of which were captured on road course circuits (Watkins Glen – 2014; Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course – 2021).
NCWTS ENDS EIGHT-RACE STRETCHThe NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) heads into an off-weekend following the conclusion of an eight-week run on the series’ 23-race schedule. The NCWTS kicked off the tripleheader race weekend at Nashville Superspeedway, where Niece Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar led the way for Chevrolet in the final running order in third, his fourth top-five finish of 2022. Joining Hocevar in the top-10 was Max Guitierrez, who piloted the No. 22 AM Racing Silverado RST to an eighth-place finish in just his second-career NCWTS start.  Only two races remain in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular season. Hocevar leads Chevrolet drivers in the NCWTS driver standings in the eighth-position and 75 points above the playoff cutline. While an unfortunate result for GMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger at Nashville, Enfinger remained in the ninth spot and 39 points above the playoff cutline.  The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will return to competition at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course next Saturday, July 9, with the O’Reilly Auto Parts 150.  BOWTIE BULLETS·       Chevrolet’s Chase Elliott is the defending winner at Road America, who drove his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the win in the NASCAR Cup Series return to the track in 2021.  ·       A road course favorite, Chase Elliott has recorded seven road course victories in his NASCAR Cup Series career; the most of all active NCS drivers. Elliott also ranks third on the NCS all-time road course wins list behind NASCAR Hall of Famers Jeff Gordon (nine wins) and Tony Stewart (eight wins). Elliott’s victories have been recorded at five different road courses, a record in series’ history.
·       Chevrolet has won the last eight-consecutive NASCAR Cup Series road course races, dating back to Chase Elliott’s win at Circuit of The Americas in May 2021.
·       Trackhouse Racing has gone two-for-two in NASCAR Cup Series road course wins this season, with Ross Chastain taking the win at Circuit of The Americas and Daniel Suarez’s win at Sonoma Raceway. Each victory also marked first-career NCS wins for both drivers.
·       Chase Elliott’s victory at Nashville Superspeedway was the ninth win for Chevrolet in 17 points-paying NASCAR Cup Series races, giving the bowtie brand a winning average of .667. Chevrolet also continues to lead in NCS top-fives (40), top-10s (77), laps led (2,375) and stage wins (16).
·       Seven Team Chevy drivers have combined 16 NASCAR Cup Series stage wins: Tyler Reddick 2 – Fontana x2Alex Bowman 1 – Las VegasRoss Chastain 3 – Las Vegas, Darlington, CharlotteWilliam Byron 3 – Phoenix, Atlanta, TalladegaDaniel Suarez 2 –  COTA, CharlotteChase Elliott 3 – Martinsville x2, CharlotteKyle Larson 2 – Bristol, Sonoma ·       Chase Elliott is now the fifth different repeat winner in the NASCAR Cup Series thus far. Other Chevrolet drivers on that elite list includes William Byron (Atlanta, Martinsville) and Ross Chastain (COTA, Talladega).  ·       Chevrolet leads the driver points standing in both the NASCAR Cup Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Chase Elliott remains in the top position in the NCS standings for the 13th consecutive week with a 30-point lead over second; and AJ Allmendinger continues to lead the NXS standings by 25 points. Chevrolet also remains atop both the NCS and NXS manufacturer points standings.  ·       With its 40 NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Championships, 33 NASCAR Cup Series Driver Championships, and 823 all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins, Chevrolet continues to hold the title of winningest brand in NASCAR.  FOR THE FANS·       Fans can visit the Team Chevy Racing Display in the Fan Midway at Road America.

Live coverage can also be found on MRN, the NBCSports Gold App, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. QUOTABLE QUOTESROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 1 ADVENT HEALTH CAMARO ZL1 HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PREPARE FOR ROAD AMERICA? “I never quite feel like I’m prepared enough. I’ll wake up every day this week and try to be better and will get on the plane to Road America and still be looking at data. I’ll look back at the race last year. Even though I won’t feel prepared enough, I know we will have good cars with a chance to win another race.”
DO YOU LIKE GOING TO ROAD AMERICA? “I love going to Road America. I’m excited to get there and get on the track. Obviously, I’m a fan of road courses but I really enjoy Road America.”
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A ROAD COURSE VERSUS AN OVAL TRACK? “Actual preparation of the car for the road courses is so different from what it used to be since we take oval cars and race them on the road courses and vice versa. On the driver side, it’s something as simple as a visual board, chasing dots, reaction times, getting our eyes to look left and up. For ovals, we kind of look out of the top of our helmet and the banking. We are so conditioned to look left since we’ve been oval track racers most of our lives. Muscle memory for the right and getting our muscles and bodies to focus to the right because it’s not as natural. It’s kind of like writing your name with your non-dominate hand, it just doesn’t come as natural.”
KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1LARSON ON PULLING DOUBLE DUTY AT ROAD AMERICA: “There are some big differences between the Cup and Xfinity cars, like braking points and sequential shifting in the Cup car versus an H-pattern in the Xfinity car. But getting more track time is worth it while getting an additional race with Kevin (Meendering) calling the shots will help our communication.”
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1 ELLIOTT ON HEADING BACK TO ROAD AMERICA: “I’m excited to get back to Road America. I thought last year’s event was really good. For me, I was always partial to having the Fourth (of July) race at Daytona, but the crowd was really good and the energy was super high, and I think we need to have an energetic race on the Fourth. That’s a big weekend for our country. It’s a race inside our sport that I think is deserving of a lot of energy too, because we are a sport that’s going on this time of year and that needs to be a big event. I felt like the people up there welcomed us with open arms and brought a lot of energy. Anytime you have energy at the track, it makes it fun for everybody involved – whether you’re working inside the sport, you’re a driver, you’re another a fan there, it just makes for a better event, better environment. Last year, I felt was a great example of that. I hope that’s the case again this weekend. I hope the results are the same this weekend and everybody has a big time.”
ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1GUSTAFSON ON WHAT MAKES ROAD AMERICA HARD TO PREPARE FOR: “Road America is different. I love the track. It’s a great visual road course. Braking zones are the first thing that come to mind there, though. You need to be good in those. There’s some really big braking zones that are difficult. The car needs to be able to change direction well and have stability at the same time. You can’t swing the back to change directions. If you do that, then there’s more that the driver has to manage. There’s also the course intricacies that you have to prepare for. There’s a few tight 90 degree corners, the carousel, the kink – a high-speed left. That’s what makes it so difficult. There are so many styles of corners there that make it harder. I think stability in the braking zones and consistency out of the car are the biggest things to hone in on. You key in on one area and want the front tires to be responsive and follow his hands. If we can do that without the back sliding, then that’s ultimately the best thing. We’ll try to do that this weekend at Road America. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 RAPTORTOUGH.COM CAMARO ZL1 BYRON ON HIS THOUGHTS FOR ROAD AMERICA THIS WEEKEND: “I’m excited to head to Road America. I’ve always enjoyed racing there in both series. I feel like it’s one of my strongest road courses that we race at. I finished sixth there in the Xfinity Series in 2017 and, while the Cup race didn’t end the way we wanted, we had a strong run going there all day with a stage one win and a second-place finish in stage two. We have some notes to work off of for this year’s race but the Next Gen car adds an element of unknown still. We’ve really had to work on our road course package this year, and I think we’re starting to get in a better place after Sonoma (Raceway). We just have to keep it moving in the right direction and I think we have a good chance of doing that at Road America this weekend.”
RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 RAPTORTOUGH.COM CAMARO ZL1 FUGLE ON PREPARING FOR ROAD AMERICA: “Road America presents its own set of challenges compared to other road courses we run at. It’s the longest course we compete on and it’s also the heaviest-braking road course on the schedule. We don’t have a ton of notes heading into this race since last year was the first Cup Series race there. But we had a good race, and the No. 9 won, so we have a good starting point. Plus we’ve had two Next Gen road course races already this year. We have more notes going into this weekend than in the past especially since we’re using the same tire as we did at COTA (Circuit of The Americas). I think some trends will stay the same as well, including that you want to make sure you’re good in the braking zones but also you want to have more grip and drive off in the slower corners of the course. That gives you better lap times.”
ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 BOWMAN ON REBOUNDING FROM THE ALLY 400: “It is always frustrating to not be able to finish a race – just hurts a little more when it’s the Ally 400. Our guys do a phenomenal job of forgetting a bad week and refocusing for a good week and I know we will do that this week for Road America. Greg (Ives, crew chief) will put together a game plan, our guys will build a fast No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and be ready for the green flag this Sunday.”
GREG IVES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 IVES ON HIS CONFIDENCE HEADING TO ANOTHER ROAD COURSE:“Alex (Bowman) is working really hard on his end to make sure he is studying his notes, prepping for the weekend and leaving no stone unturned for road courses – Road America is no different. We didn’t get a chance to compete in Nashville, so the No. 48 team is focused on putting our best foot forward and bouncing back in a strong way at Road America. Our guys have put together a great No. 48 Ally Chevy and I am confident that we will run well this Sunday. Adding that we will pit in the opposite direction this weekend, our pit crews have also been putting in the time to get ready for an unusual set of circumstances. We just have to go out there and do our best at what we can control and be there at the end for a shot at winning.”
DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 JOCKEY CAMARO ZL1WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT SEEING ROAD AMERICA – A ROAD COURSE – ON THE SCHEDULE NEXT?   “I would be lying to you if I told you I’m not extremely excited about every single road course because I believe that we can win in every single one of them. We have good cars. I have a very good team behind me. I feel like I’ve done a good job with the tools that have been given to me and it’s been fun. So, I’m really looking forward to it. I know it’s going to be a lot of fun for me; and hopefully we can have another strong shot.”
ARE YOU THE FAVORITE TO WIN AT ROAD AMERICA?“Honestly, I don’t know. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter to me. I think at COTA, we we’re extremely strong. Our car broke early and we did what we had to do to finish the stage and survive. But in my opinion, we were very, very strong; even stronger than Sonoma. In Sonoma, we had a very good car. We did a very good job calling the race.”
HAVE YOU STARTED THINKING ABOUT THE PLAYOFFS? “Honestly, I haven’t thought about the Playoffs yet. We still have 2 ½ months before that. I feel like there is still a lot of things to be done before that. It feels good to know that we’re locked-in. But as a race car driver, at least for me, we know that being locked-in doesn’t mean a lot. For me, it means a lot when you have a lot of points in the bank – when you have more than a win, but also at least a few Playoff points. That’s when you start becoming a strong contender in the Playoff races. Hopefully we can get a couple more wins and some more Playoff points. That would be nice.”

NASCAR CUP SERIES

ROAD AMERICA

KWIK TRIP 250

TEAM CHEVY PRESS CONF. TRANSCRIPT

JUNE 30, 2022

AJ ALLMENDINGER, NO. 16 GOLD FISH CASINO SLOTS CAMARO ZL1, met with the media via teleconference in advance of the NASCAR Cup Series race weekend at Road America. Press Conference Transcript:

WE’RE GOING TO ANOTHER ROAD COURSE THIS WEEKEND, THE THIRD OF THE SEASON. OBVIOUSLY YOU EXCEL ON THESE TYPES OF LAYOUTS. THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND TIME AT ROAD AMERICA FOR THE CUP SERIES. TALK ABOUT YOUR MINDSET AND HOW MUCH YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING TO WISCONSIN.

“Road America has always been one of my favorite race tracks in anything that I’ve driven over my career. I’ve been fortunate enough to race a lot of races there in different forms of open wheel racing; won a Champ Car race there. It’s a race track that is challenging and unique. There’s not a lot of race tracks, especially in North America, that are like Road America with the speed down the straightaways. You still have really big brake zones. There’s a lot of passing opportunities and a lot of areas to make mistakes. That’s something that’s, in a way, makes it still a true road course because there’s no run-off area, really. You go off the race track, you’re in gravel or grass. So you have to be pretty spot-on on the race track throughout the four miles.

It’s a fun weekend. Knock on wood, the weather looks really good. I love the crowd there. The Wisconsin race fans, they pack that place in. It’s cool to have Cup going there as well now. We’ve had speed over the first two road courses; winning them in Xfinity. I think we can improve. That’s something we’ve been working hard on at Kaulig Racing. By no means do we think ‘OK, our road course program is set and we’re good to go’. We’ve been working hard to make our race cars faster. It’s going to be a tough field in both series. I’m pumped up to get there and hopefully have a strong weekend.”

IT’S BEEN REALLY HOT THE LAST FEW WEEKENDS AND YOU HAD A LITTLE SITUATION AT NASHVILLE. SO FIRST OFF, HOW ARE YOU DOING AND HOW HAVE YOU BEEN HEALING FROM THAT SITUATION?

“Obviously, it was really hot in Nashville. The Xfinity cars have always been really hot. I was actually OK, the only problem I had on Saturday was my foot got really hot. Going to the shop and looking at the race car, we think we know why. By no means was it cold inside the race car through the rest of cockpit; but really I was actually OK, it was just the fact that my throttle pedal was crazy hot. So when I got out of the race car, I was just trying to cool my feet down and get my shoes off. I was fine Sunday during the race, no issues. I’m feeling good, just rehydrating and getting ready for another long weekend.”

HOPEFULLY NO BLISTERS ON YOUR HEELS. THAT’S THE WORST FEELING ON A ROAD COURSE I WOULD IMAGINE.

“As we’ve all seen when I walk, I don’t really walk on my heels. I’ve never worn out a pair of shoes in the heels ever. Like I could probably resell all of my shoes from basically the middle of my foot, back, and make all my money back because I never touch the heel of my shoes. The heels have never been a problem. I don’t even wear booties in the car for my feet. It was actually just the pedal itself, so my toes and the top of my foot got really hot. But no blisters, it was all good.”

ON THE XFINITY SIDE, YOU’RE MAKING YOURSELF KNOWN AS A TITLE CONTENDER. YOU DID MENTION ABOUT WANTING TO IMPROVE ON SPEED ON THE ROAD COURSES. HOW ENCOURAGED ARE YOU ABOUT THE OVERALL PACKAGE AT KAULIG RACING?

“I think it’s one of those things where – obviously we’re leading the points, which is great. If we’re going to be brutally honest – if we had to go race Phoenix tomorrow in the championship, I don’t think we have a shot to win it. But with that said, we still have a good amount of time before the Playoffs start. Last year at this point, we were second in points; probably felt a little bit better about our speed. But because of that, with no practice, we were always afraid to really try anything to try and improve the race car. We kind of thought, ‘OK, we’re still pretty good, we don’t want to hurt that’. The great thing about where we’re at right now, is we know we need speed and all the men and women at Kaulig Racing are working hard trying different things at every race. Nashville was a race track where the year before, even though the finish showed we ran OK, we were actually really bad at. So to go back to Nashville this year, qualify second, be quickest in most of the practice and lead some laps – that was encouraging because we were definitely trying some new stuff. By no means were we the fastest car at the end of the race to go win it, so we definitely have a lot of room to improve. But we’re working hard on it.

As of this moment, are we the championship favorite? I don’t think so. I think you have to look at all of the JRM cars that have everyone beat. What Justin Allgaier did at Nashville, he put a whooping on us. So we definitely have some work to be done. But that’s what I love about this team – we’re working hard and we are improving. Maybe it’s not as quick as we want to be, but we’ll get there. We have time before the Playoffs start, so that’s what I love about it.”

KNOWNING THAT YOU WON IN 2013 AT ROAD AMERICA IN THE NASCAR XFINITY SERIES, CAN YOU REPEAT THE WIN IN THE XFINITY OR CUP RACE THIS WEEKEND?

“The last two years at Road America for Kaulig Racing, we’ve had really fast cars. We’ve just had a little bit of bad luck. I actually went back and watched the race last night to get ready and realized how fast we were there last year. We just had some mistakes on pit road that put us in the back of the field. And the way the strategy worked out, we didn’t have tires at the end of the race when a couple of those guys did. The previous year, we were the same way. I think we were leading and got the strategy wrong. So we’ve definitely had speed there. We’ve worked hard to try and improve it because just like every series, everyone is improving. It will be a challenge, but I definitely think we’ll have the speed to go win there, we just have to go execute. That’s what’s hard about Road America – because the race track is so long, you can use different strategies and you never really lose a lap. So if you play a strategy and it works out for you, it’s a big advantage. That’s what happened last year for a couple of those guys.

I have confidence that we can go there, be at our best and really have a shot to win this race. We just have to make sure we execute. That’s what it’s always about. It’s tough to get in the back of the field and try to drive through the field to get back to the front, which is what we had to do a lot last year. By the end of the race, I had used up the car, as well. On speed, I think we’ll be pretty good, we just have to make sure we execute.”

IS ROAD AMERICA ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE TRACKS?

“Road America is up there, for sure. What I love about it – as I said before, you have everything on that race track; long straightaways and really fast corners. The carousel is incredibly fast; turn one is incredibly fast. But you also have big brake zones, like into turn five into Canada Corner.

It’s easy to use up the tires there. It’s easy to make mistakes. But there’s also a lot of passing opportunities if you get in the back of the field. I love the race track. I think Xfinity always puts on a great race. I think with the Next Gen cars, they are really going to put on a great race in the Cup race on Sunday. I’m happy that I get to be a part of both.”

WILL WE SEE A RACE FINISH LIKE WE DID WITH AUSTIN CINDIRIC OR ROSS CHASTAIN AT ROAD AMERICA?

“(laughs) At the end of the day, I hope we’re battling for the win. That’s what makes it fun. Hopefully it’s a little bit different outcome from COTA with Ross (Chastain). But yeah, especially in the Cup Series, the top-20 can probably win the race if you get it right; maybe even top-25. That’s how difficult the Cup Series is. So it’s not like you can pick one or two guys and say ‘these are the guys I have to go race for the win’. Especially with this Next Gen car, we’ve seen every weekend a different team can hit a setup right and be really fast. We saw what Daniel Suarez and Chris Buescher did at Sonoma.

It’s going to be tough, but it would be fun to be battling those guys for the win, for sure.”

HOW MUCH CARRYOVER CAN THERE BE FROM SONOMA OR EVEN COTA TO ROAD AMERICA?

“I really hope it carries over more from COTA than Sonoma, for us (laughs). COTA, I thought the car was crazy fast. It was one of the most fun cars I’ve driven in my life. Sonoma was not so much of that. I would have to say that if I had to pick out of those two race tracks, it’s probably a little closer to COTA. Sonoma, it’s just tough because you just burn the tires off there. Even if your car is good, you burn the tires off there. It was really difficult to pass. That’s what was shocking at Sonoma with these Next Gen cars. In the past at Sonoma, I’ve been where I’ve gotten in the back of the field for some reason – it wasn’t like you blistered up through the field, but you could make passes. It was really tough to pass at Sonoma with these Next Gen cars. I think we see that at times. At certain race tracks, it’s great racing; and then you go to the next race track and you’re like ‘wow’… like Martinsville, nobody could pass there.

The speed of COTA and the way the race track kind of flows is closer to Road America. But I do say that Road America has a possibility about using the tires up. I’m still a bit confused sometimes on the race tracks that we go to with these wider tires, low profile tires – they don’t wear out as much as I expect them to and then sometimes they really do wear out. Like Sonoma, there was nothing I could do to keep the rear tires on the car. I would burn them off so quick.

I think we learned a lot from Sonoma of what we were trying to do that didn’t work. So kind of use what we learned at COTA, went to the simulator and felt pretty good about it. But we’ll see when we unload there on Saturday for the Cup cars and see where we’re at.”

WITH THE CUP CAR, WHAT’S IT LIKE FROM THE DRIVER’S POINT OF VIEW IN TERMS OF CONSISTENCY? WHAT’S IT LIKE ON A DRIVER WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE – MAYBE ONE WEEK YOU’RE ON TOP OF THE WORLD AND THE NEXT WEEK YOU CAN’T GET OUT OF 25TH.

“For me personally, it’s fun. Let’s be completely honest here – like in the past, especially with the old car when we were with the No. 47 car, we knew that with these types of races we could go run well. But you knew half of the time at a 1.5-mile race track – no matter what you did, you could be perfect that weekend and you’d probably run 20th just because those cars had been massaged so much, aero-wise. And the big teams knew so many tricks of what they could get through tech; what they could show the officials to get them looking in that area and know other areas that they could really cheat up and it would never be seen. So it was tough sometimes going to those race weekends and going ‘I hope at best we can run 18th’. With this Next Gen car now, your eyes are kind of wide open. Yeah there are some weekends that I’ve gotten in the car and you’re just terrible all weekend and it’s a struggle. But also, when we went to St. Louis – I had no practice, had never seen the place before. We got the car dialed in mid-race and we drove up through the field. I actually thought we had a top-five car by the end of the race. Even last week, we got the car right and we were getting to the edge of the top-10.

That makes it fun because you know if you hit the setup right – the two road courses are the perfect example of that. COTA, I started at the back and we were a top-two car all day, between me and Ross (Chastain). Sonoma, I was at best 11th or 12th. So it does make it fun because you know if your team executes and you get the setup right, you can go have a shot to win races or run upfront. I think what it is, is they’re so aero-sensitive of getting the nose right on the front, getting the rear right and getting everything to go along with that – it’s hard to hit the setup. So I think that’s why you see that inconsistency, but I think it makes it fun. All these teams are showing up to these races knowing they have a shot to do well if they get the setup right.”

WHAT’S IT MEAN TO YOU TO HAVE 10 OF KAULIG RACING’S 16 WINS IN THE XFINITY SERIES?

“Yeah, it’s special to me. I was very fortunate at the No. 47 to get their first Cup win and you get that banner hanging in there. To come to Kaulig Racing back in 2019, there were some pole banners hung, some stage wins banners, but no win banners. It was something that as I got to know Matt Kaulig, Chris Rice and all the men and women there – I really took pride of being like ‘OK, I hope I can help be a part of this organization and try to make it better’.

I go to the race track and the race shop – even at this stage in my career and life – probably with more anticipation and anxiety because I want to be at my best for this organization because I want to go win races. So to be able to see all of those banners and have a Cup win banner in there from Indy is really special. I love it. Whether I’m in the race car or out of the race car, I just want to make the race team better and hopefully I’m a small part of that.”

WITH NEW HAMPSHIRE COMING UP, YOU ONLY GO THERE ONE TIME A YEAR. WHAT OTHER TRACKS ARE YOU ABLE TO APPLY NOTES FROM TO NEW HAMPSHIRE?

“Loudon, we’ve been there enough – at least I have and a lot of these teams – that we kind of have an idea of what the race track is. I would say that the resin they put down there at times does change it a bit. So it makes it a little more difficult of trying to figure out what the race track is going to do. The resin is actually a lot more consistent than the PJ-1 is, so it’s a little easier. But it still throws that curve ball into the race track.

What’s it like compared to other race tracks? I think you can look at a place like Martinsville – if the car was turning good there and had good grip, you can apply it a bit. But it is unique. It’s probably actually a little bit like St. Louis too, even though the straightaways are a little bit longer at St. Louis. But it’s its own race track.

If you’re asking about race tracks that maybe we only go to once and we should only go to once, I think there’s open possibilities as long as you have other race tracks that you could put on the schedule and add. That’s what’s great about NASCAR and where it’s at right now. With the scheduling, they do have options of maybe trying a new race track and we’ve seen that. Moving down the future, I think there are great possibilities of maybe only going to a race track once and you add another different city that we haven’t been to and you go to. Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about that. I just drive at the race tracks that they tell us to drive at.

Loudon, I will always say – when your car is right, I’ve always enjoyed that race track. When it’s wrong, it’s one of the hardest and most difficult race tracks because you can’t do anything about it and you seem like you’re always in the way. I’ve been on both ends of the spectrum there, so hopefully we’re on the good end in a couple of weeks.”

YOU HAD SOME ISSUES WITH HEAT AT NASHVILLE. ARE THERE ANY CHANGES THAT CAN BE MADE TO HELP WITH THAT, EITHER THIS WEEKEND AT ROAD AMERICA OR AT THE NEXT EXPECTED HOT RACE AT ATLANTA?

“The Xfinity car – I don’t honestly know why, but they’re just hot. The cars themselves, whether the right-side window is in or the right-side window is out, they’re just hot. That’s something that during these hot races, you just have to deal with it. I’ve always said that the Xfinity cars are a good bit hotter than the Cup cars. The Cup cars when we first started testing before they started putting the vents and everything into the car, they were crazy hot. But since then, they haven’t been too bad.

The Xfinity cars are just hot and you know that getting into the races that they’re going to hot. Our issue at Nashville I think we figured out, as to why it was extremely hot in the footbox. So I’m not as worried about it going to Atlanta. But yeah, during these summer races, you just have to prepare yourself. Kaulig Racing does a lot with cooling. We have the cool shirt that we all wear and that helps a huge amount. The rest of it, you just try to train for, hydrate and be ready.”

ON THE PROWL: Brad Sweet, team using Cedar Lake as performance test

Sweet and his Kasey Kahne Racing team will be on the hunt for their third consecutive sweep of the Independence Day Spectacular, July 1-2By Nick GrazianoNEW RICHMOND, WI (June 30, 2022) – With five consecutive wins at Cedar Lake Speedway, Brad Sweet and his Kasey Kahne Racing team have had a big circle around the Independence Day Spectacular weekend, July 1-2. But for more reasons than the obvious one. While their overall stats say it’s a track they should be ready to win at again, their 2022 stats have them hoping the doubleheader event in Wisconsin will show them what’s been missing this season.“This is a good test for us to see, like, if we’re bad at Cedar Lake we’re a lot further off than we probably realized,” Sweet said. “I think it is a big weekend for our team to get back on track. I’m very hopeful that it will go good and we can build some momentum off that.”This time last year the Grass Valley, CA driver had 10 wins. Currently, he has one – the first time in his full-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series career he’s gone the first half of the season without multiple victories.“I think [we’re] just trying to find the right balance with the race car,” Sweet said. “Whether things change with tires or whatever. We just haven’t been able to get me 100% comfortable. We’ve struggled a little bit with qualifying, track position and things. But we’ve been showing some signs. Hopefully we can kind of get rolling at the right time this year.”At the beginning of June, he earned his first podium finish in more than a month with a second-place run at River Cities Speedway and then backed it up the following week with another second-place run at Knoxville Raceway. He’s scored six top-10 finishes in the last six starts with his worst finish being 14th during the Huset’s High Bank Nationals. However, he and his team, consisting of crew chief Eric Prutzman and crew members Joe Mooney and Andrew Bowman, were able to avoid a DNF one night after a wild flip during the event – a feat that even surprised the three-time and defending champion.“I do think that one good thing about our team with the experience that we have is we do really well at getting the most out of it,” Sweet said. “Even if it’s not a win on a certain night, we figure out how to get a fifth or a seventh or a sixth and not make too many mistakes.“Even this weekend at Huset’s, the preparation of our race team and how they were able to get me back on the track was just amazing, even to me. My guys are really well oiled. Really great race team. All that stuff pays off, especially when you’re struggling to have those kinds of rebounds and salvages are really good.”With their resilient nature, Sweet has kept his NAPA Auto Parts #49 car atop the points standings, but the competition is closing. Four drivers are currently within 60 points of Sweet – Carson Macedo (-12), Sheldon Haudenschild (-24), David Gravel (-46) and Logan Schuchart (-54).Sweet acknowledged the competition has increased this year as more teams continue to learn and grow. However, he said a benefit, so far, is no one has hit on a perfect setup every race.“Everybody is good one night, think they have a handle on it, then show up the next night and it’s not as good,” he added.Other than a new livery, Sweet and his KKR team didn’t change anything with their program from 2021 into 2022. There’s just been a missing piece to the puzzle. The size of that piece is the bigger mystery. Having been successful with about every setup he’s ran at Cedar Lake, Sweet hopes they can finally close the case this weekend before the “Summer of Money” with events like The Historical Big 1 (July 14), Kings Royal (July 16), Summer Nationals (July 22-23), Ironman 55 (Aug. 5-6), Knoxville Nationals (Aug. 10-13) and more.“If we’re not in contention this weekend I think we’ll have to really look at our program and make a lot bigger changes quicker as far as taking swings at it,” Sweet said. “If we’re just missing it a little bit, I think this is the weekend we’ll find that.”

Team Chevy INDYCAR Drivers Have Mid-Ohio on their Minds

Chevrolet-powered IndyCars aim to extend Manufacturer Championship lead
DETROIT (June 30, 2022) – Team Chevy’s squads in the NTT INDYCAR Series hoping to close out a stellar first half of the 2022 season in the same way it started: with a dominating performance. That chance comes this weekend in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.
Chevrolet has won at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course each of the last two years, and another this season would go a long way toward winning a seventh Engine Manufacturer Championship since 2012.
In that stretch, Team Chevy has claimed five victories at the 13-turn, 2.258-mile Mid-Ohio circuit. In recent years, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden (2021) and Will Power (2020) have stood on the top step of the podium. Newgarden is the most recent winner in INDYCAR this year, having won earlier this month at Road America.
“It’s been nice for our engineers and teams to have a little bit of a break in the action after a strong couple of months for everyone on the Chevrolet INDYCAR program,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet Program Manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “We’ve been doing some beneficial testing for later in the year that we hope will strengthen our Manufacturer Championship lead.
“We head to Mid-Ohio with confidence. While this has been a little bit of an up-and-down venue for us, I am confident that some of our road-course success this year can pay dividends this weekend. Winning at Barber and Road America – two tracks with some similar features and elevation change – should give our teams a pretty good baseline for rolling off at Mid-Ohio. We’re expecting positive results.”
Speed around Mid-Ohio hasn’t been a problem for Chevrolet in INDYCAR. Team Chevy has claimed nine pole positions in 11 Mid-Ohio races with Penske’s Power leading all active drivers with five; no other driver has more than two.
Chevrolet and the NTT INDYCAR Series resume the 2022 season with the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, starting at 12:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 3 from Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. The race will air live on NBC, the Peacock streaming service and SiriusXM IndyCar Nation (Channel 160) beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. Live timing and scoring will be available at racecontrol.indycar.com.
TEAM CHEVY QUOTESDALTON KELLETT, NO. 4 K-LINE CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING: “Mid-Ohio is definitely one of the more exciting tracks that we go to every year. It’s got a great flow to it. It’s definitely my type of road course. It’s kind of the opposite of Road America where there you’ve got long straightaways and you’ve got groups of a couple of corners separated by really long straightaways. Mid- Ohio, the whole thing kind of flows together, which I’ve always really enjoyed tracks like that. It’s super physical, really. It’s always one of the tough races with the heat of the summer. So definitely we’ve been training hard to get ready for this one, and I can’t wait to hit the ground running with the K-Line No. 4 Chevy.”
PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW McLAREN CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP: “I am pumped for the second part of the season and where this No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet team currently stands. Mid-Ohio is a very enjoyable racetrack in terms of putting a full qualifying lap together and the race is always fun as well. This is a track where we know what we have, and I’m looking forward to improving on our results in recent years.”
FELIX ROSEQVIST, NO. 7 VUSE CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP: “I love racing at Mid-Ohio, and I have some of my best memories in INDYCAR at that track. I think this track brings a really cool vibe with die-hard fans every year, so all of us on the No. 7 Vuse Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet are looking forward to getting there and being on track. We had a difficult run last year, but I feel motivated to get some redemption for this team.”
TATIANA CALDERON, NO. 11 ROKiT CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING: “Mid-Ohio was where I first tested the car with the team. So at least I know a little bit about the track and the feeling with this car. It’s the first time I am going to a circuit that I know, that I had a feeling for before (the race weekend). I think we had a good test. And a good race car there, so hopefully we can straight away from Free Practice 1 start closer to the pace. And yes we will just keep working. The physical side there is tougher; it’s a small track so that’s going to be a nice test. And yes, I’m looking forward to it.”
KYLE KIRKWOOD, NO. 14 ROKiT CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING: “Mid-Ohio is a track that I love and cherish; I almost consider it my home track. It’s a place that I’ve always had the most success at, given a season. It’s my favorite track to go to. And I think it’s a place where the team has done well at in the past, and we now have a couple week break prior to it. So it’ll be nice to kind of relax and recuperate and get ready for that weekend. I’m not sure what I love about the track, but it’s just suited me, it’s very high-speed. There’s tons of elevation. It kind of reminds me of a karting track… a little bit tighter, but a bit high-speed, high-downforce, high-grip. I’m not sure why it suits me, but I really like it.”
CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “I am very happy to be back on track after a break! Mid-Ohio is a fantastic race course and July 4th weekend is an incredible time to be racing. We’ve had a great season so far and we want to continue our run of solid finishes and scoring good points. Hopefully, we can make it out of Mid-Ohio with a trophy!”
RINUS VEEKAY, NO. 21 BITCOIN WITH BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “I’m very excited to drive at Mid-Ohio. CALLUM ILOTT, NO. 77 DYNAMIC EDGE CHEVROLET, JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING: “I’m excited to head to Mid-Ohio this week. It’s another track that I haven’t been to, so a steep learning curve on the weekend. After Road America though I am pretty sure we can do a good job. We want to keep the road course momentum going and try to get into the fast 12 again. So far we have managed to put the car into the fast 12 at every road course we have been to this year and we hope to continue that and do a good job.”

Road America up Next for Burton, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team

June 29, 2022

Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team will spend the upcoming weekend at NASCAR’s new Independence Day weekend venue – Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.

The holiday weekend race was moved last year from its traditional home in Daytona Beach to the historic 4.048-mile, 14-turn track, which hosted one Cup Series race in 1956 then was off the circuit until 2021.

Brian Wilson, crew chief of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang, hasn’t competed at Road America at the Cup Series level, but he has three races there in the Xfinity Series. With Austin Cindric as his driver Wilson has a win in 2020, a runner-up the year before and an eighth-place finish last year. Two times the team started the race from the outside pole and once from third place.

Not surprisingly, Wilson is looking forward to another trip north.

“The Road America race on the Fourth of July weekend has shown to be a great racing atmosphere,” he said. “Personally, I’ve always enjoyed our trips there with the Xfinity series.”

For Wilson, Burton and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team, this weekend’s race, the third road-course event of the season, offers a different set of challenges from the first two – at Circuit of the Americas and at Sonoma Raceway.

“Compared to our last Cup Series road course race at Sonoma this track is much more high speed and less about drive off,” Wilson said. “There are still some heavy braking zones, but many of the corners are high speed.

“Braking ability, platform control and lateral grip are all areas of focus this weekend.

“Once again, we’ve utilized the Ford simulator in preparation for the race. Being able to make laps, let Harrison get in a rhythm and work on shift points and marks is a huge asset that Ford provides us.

“I’m confident that we’ll hit the ground running when we get to Saturday’s practice session.”

That practice session is set to start at 10:35 a.m. (11:35 Eastern Time) and will be followed by qualifying at 11:25 (12:25 Eastern).

The 62-lap, 250.98-mile Kwik Trip 250 is scheduled to get the green flag just after 2 p.m. (3 p.m. Eastern) on Sunday, with Stage breaks at Laps 15 and 30.

USA Network will provide the TV coverage both days.

CHEVROLET GRAND PRIX PREVIEW: ZOOM TRANSCRIPT

Renger van der Zande, co-driver of the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R, met with the media June 29 via Zoom conference to preview this weekend’s Chevrolet Grand Prix on the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park road course. He and Sebastien Bourdais drove to third place June 26 at Watkins Glen International.
Full transcript:
YOU’VE FINISHED SECOND AT CANADIAN TIRE MOTORSPORTS PARK. WHAT’S IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET ONE MORE STEP ON THE PODIUM?“To be honest, when I saw the BoP coming out, I expected us to get a little bit of a BoP break. Because I think Mosport is one of those tracks where aero is what you need, you need a fast car through the fast corners. So, I really was hoping and expecting more from that. I hope I’m wrong, I hope the car is as fast as the Acuras. It’s going to be tough. As you saw last weekend, I think we were the only Cadillac that got close to the Acuras, kind of hang in there but we could never really attack. We never had a chance to get in front. We were driving around in third place all day long and we finished third, so it was kind of a perfect race for us. Let’s see what we can do in Canada. Mosport is a fantastic track. It one of the best tracks in the world together with Watkins Glen. It’s one of those tracks where you need a bit of bravery, and I don’t think in many car races you need a lot of bravery, so that’s what’s cool about it. We’ll take it from there. The team is doing good and the car has been performing well. Early in the season we had some technical issues, but that hasn’t happened anymore, so happy about that. The championship seems to be far away, so the only thing we can go for is the wins. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
WHAT DO YOU LOOK AT AS THE KEY ARA OF THE CIRCUIT?“The two right-handers, I think that’s an interesting one especially when you’re in traffic. What makes this championship so cool is the multi-class racing. I think from the GT side and the prototype side, it’s always a combination of how you work together. But I those corners there’s just one way and that’s wait. If you’re waiting and you’re staying behind a GT then they’re coming from behind and they’re going to try every little gap to get by. When you’re attacking, it’s the opposite. That’s a very interesting corner and a lot is going to happen there. At high speed, if you’re close behind someone you’re kind of losing ground because you’re losing the downforce and you have understeer and can’t follow that well. But in those slow corners, that’s where the opportunities become big to make a move.”
WITH A LONG WAY OUT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP, DOES THAT MAKE YOU AS DRIVERS BE A BIT MORE AGGRESSIVE AND TAKE MORE GAMBLES TO GET THE WINS?“Whenever we go for the wins that gives us the best points, so the only chance for us to get close in this championship is to win and hope the other guys have a bad day. So, we’re focused on the win; that’s the only thing we care about. Second or third place is not going to bring us much.”
CAN YOU SHARE WHEN THE CADILLAC LMDH WILL BE ON TRACK?“I would love to share that, but it’s not my call.”

Cameron Smith to Fill In For Injured Johnny Lewis

Sent on behalf of Royal Enfield North America Milwaukee, WI (Wednesday, June 29, 2022) – After sustaining a knee injury at the Laconia Short Track round of the Progressive American Flat Track series, Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield’s Johnny Lewis will not be suiting up for the upcoming rounds of the championship. But Lewis’ misfortune spells opportunity for promising young flat track racer Cameron Smith, who will fill in with the Moto Anatomy X team aboard the Twins FT for rounds eight and nine of the Progressive AFT series in the Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines class, starting this weekend at the New York Short Track at Weedsport Raceway. Cameron Smith of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, is already a familiar face in the Mission Production Twins class. The 23-year-old celebrated two podium finishes in 2021, including a second-place finish at Weedsport, and is fresh off a fourth-place finish at the Lima Half-Mile. Smith is eager for the opportunity to race aboard the Royal Enfield Twins FT motorcycle at both the New York Short Track at Weedsport Raceway on July 2 and the Port Royal Half-Mile in Pennsylvania on July 16. “I’m definitely excited to be running the Royal Enfield at the New York Short Track and Port Royal – that’s my home race,” says Smith. “I definitely can’t wait to get on the Twins FT and see what we can do. I grew up near Johnny, and I got my style from him. I think the way the bike is set up, and because Johnny and I are the same height and kinda have the same style, we should be able to do well.” As for Johnny Lewis, it’s a bittersweet turn of events, but the Moto Anatomy X racer is happy to hand an opportunity to someone he considers a friend and protégé. “I trained Cameron when he was 11, 12 years old, and on and off in the last few years,” said Lewis. “He has demonstrated winning speed, and he trusts me so I know I can help point him in the right direction. So it’s a good match.” Lewis and the Moto Anatomy X crew also have utmost confidence in the Twins FT motorcycle, which they have been dedicated to developing with Royal Enfield. “I think I could have won again at Lima,” said Lewis, referring to his landmark victory in Ohio last year. “The bike is that good. We’re really happy with where it’s at, so, as much as it sucks for me, I think it’s also really neat to see our development to this point. We have high expectations for the short tracks and half miles coming up. My goal is to be back in time for Peoria and the West Coast swing later this summer. But for now, our focus is on Cameron for these next two rounds.” Adrian Sellers, Royal Enfield Head, Industrial Design, is also looking forward to having Smith under the tent. “We’re excited to have Cameron ride the Twins FT. He’s clearly proved himself this year and last, and his close relationship with Johnny makes him a natural fit for standing in while he’s injured. We’re also looking forward to his insights into the motorcycle and his fresh perspective on the Twins FT package. As only the second racer to ride the 2022 chassis, his inputs will be valuable to the continued development of the Twins FT.”

WHAT TO WATCH FOR: Cedar Lake Welcomes World of Outlaws for Independence Day Spectacular

Brad Sweet Chasing Record-Tying Seventh-Straight Win at Wisconsin 3/8-Mile

NEW RICHMOND, WI – June 29, 2022 – The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series continues the annual tradition of celebrating Independence Day by slingin’ mud, throwin’ sliders, and shootin’ fireworks this weekend at Cedar Lake Speedway.

Back-to-back nights on Friday and Saturday, July 1-2 will bring The Greatest Show on Dirt to 50 Series appearances at the New Richmond, WI 3/8-mile, becoming only the 21st track in history to reach that mark.

There’s a chance at the record books, redemption on the line, and valuable points available amid one of the closest championship battles in history. It’s all set the stage for an explosive weekend in The Badger State.

BUY TICKETS HERE (Fri-Sat)

Let’s look at what to watch for this weekend on DIRTVision.com:

CHASING HISTORY: Championship leader Brad Sweet has the opportunity to equal one of the most impressive records in World of Outlaws history this weekend as the Series returns to Cedar Lake Speedway. He’s already one of five drivers to record five consecutive wins at a single track – Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Mark Kinser, Donny Schatz – and now he could tie Mark Kinser’s all-time record of seven-straight at I-80 Speedway (NE) this weekend with another Cedar Lake sweep.

Other than one DNF in 2019, The Big Cat has recorded nine consecutive top-two finishes at the track to go along with his five-straight wins. He’s beat David Gravel thrice, Carson Macedo twice, and Kerry Madsen once over his six Cedar Lake wins, only one shy of Sammy Swindell’s track record of seven scores. A third-straight weekend sweep would not only prove historic for the Grass Valley, CA native, but it would be a huge boost of confidence for the Kasey Kahne Racing, NAPA Auto Parts #49, a team still vying for their first win since March, and second of the season.

CAREER-YEAR: Fresh off an exhilarating late-race charge and last-lap pass worth a career-high $100,000 payday at Huset’s, Sheldon Haudenschild and Stenhouse Jr. / Marshall Racing have all the momentum in the world at their side. The Wooster, OH native has already matched his career-best of eight wins in a single season through the first 32 races and is setting himself up for a run at his first-career Series championship.

Since climbing aboard the NOS Energy Drink #17 in 2018, Sheldon has never finished outside the top-10 in nine appearances at Cedar Lake Speedway. The 28-year-old scored one of his 30 career wins at the track in 2019, and will certainly be a favorite to repeat again this weekend.

REDEMPTION: While Brad Sweet has enjoyed the thrill of victory at Cedar Lake, it has been Carson Macedo on the other side struggling with the agony of defeat. He earned back-to-back third-place finishes when aboard the Kyle Larson Racing #2 and upped his game with back-to-back runner-up results in the Jason Johnson Racing #41 last year but still chases his first taste of Victory Lane in New Richmond.

The Lemoore, CA native started on the pole both nights last year and led 47 of 70 laps, but fell second to The Big Cat in each Feature. Combine that with the ache of finishing fifth after leading more than half of last week’s $100,000-to-win High Bank Nationals at Huset’s, and Macedo is chomping at the bit to close the case on his much-needed redemption this weekend.

LOVIN’ THE LAKE: Beyond Sweet, Haudenschild, and Macedo, another trio of drivers – Schatz, Schuchart, and Gravel – have excelled in their own right at Wisconsin’s Cedar Lake Speedway.

Donny Schatz is a five-time World of Outlaws winner in New Richmond, most recently in 2016. The 10-time Series champion owns 17 top-five finishes through 34 starts at the track and looks to use that success as a catapult in nailing down win #2 of 2022 in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing #15.

David Gravel has long-awaited his first taste of victory at Cedar Lake. Most notable among his 14 top-10 finishes in 18 starts is a whopping six runner-up finishes, yet no triumphs. The Watertown, CT native hopes to change that this weekend in the Big Game Motorsports #2.

Logan Schuchart returns to the site of his first-career World of Outlaws win this weekend, a moment that came back in July of 2o16. Since then, the Shark Racing superstar has tacked on 30 more wins to his resume and now goes for a second Cedar Lake score.

START OF SOMETHING NEW: Spencer Bayston and CJB Motorsports unveiled a new scheme and new partnership last week when they announced TrueTimber Camo as a fresh sponsor on their revamped RipTide edition of the #5. The new pairing quickly got off to a hot start by winning on night one at Huset’s to earn their second win of the 2022 season together.

The 23-year-old native of Lebanon, IN prepares for his second weekend in the TrueTimber #5 as the Series returns to Cedar Lake, a track he visited for the first time last year. He was a ninth-place finisher then and looks to build on that as he and CJB continue to cut down that points deficit from seventh-place.

FINDING MOMENTUM: A trio of World of Outlaws full-timers made their mark on Huset’s last week with a season-best effort, and now look to build on that as the Series visits Cedar Lake Speedway this weekend.

Kasey Kahne set not only a season-best but a career-best result as he led 23 of 30 laps last Wednesday and finished third-place, parking on the podium for the first time in his career. This weekend, he makes his debut at Cedar Lake in the FuelMe, Karavan Trailers #9.

James McFadden was one of the most impressive drivers all week long at Huset’s, but it came in heartbreaking fashion as his pair of runner-up results followed moments where the Roth Motorsports #83 had the lead but lost it. The Australian takes his pursuit for win #1 of the season to Cedar Lake this weekend, where he finished sixth last year.

Brock Zearfoss earned his first top-five of the season and sixth of his career last week, driving the #3Z to a fourth-place finish at Huset’s. The Jonestown, PA native looks to keep it rolling this weekend at Cedar Lake, where he finished 10th in his rookie campaign last year.

DOUBLING DOWN: The stars are aligning for a potential career-best effort from Robbie Price aboard the Sides Motorsports #7S this weekend. Cedar Lake Speedway is one of the few venues on the World of Outlaws schedule where the Cobble Hill, British Columbia native has the experience, and it came in the form of a third-place finish behind Thomas Kennedy and Skylar Gee in 2018 with the POWRi UMSS Wing Sprint Series.

It was also last year when Jason Sides earned the 170th and final top-five finish of his World of Outlaws career when he slow-rolled the bottom to a popular fifth-place result. The new 24-year-old pilot of the #7S looks for more of the same this weekend as he tries to top his career-best of 13th with the Series.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER: Cedar Lake’s doubleheader is the official start to the busiest month of the World of Outlaws season with 14 races scheduled over 31 nights on the July calendar. It’s a crucial span throughout the “Month of Money” with a pair of six-figure paydays, and a golden opportunity for teams to either help or hurt their championship hopes as the 80-race season hits halfway.

Among the many highlights include Attica’s $15,000/Win Brad Doty Classic, Eldora’s $100,000/Win Historical Big One and $175,000/Win Kings Royal, Port Royal’s summer showdown, and Williams Grove’s Summer Nationals.

  • Fri-Sat, July 1-2 at Cedar Lake Speedway (WI)
  • Fri, July 8 at 34 Raceway (IA)
  • Sat, July 9 at Wilmot Raceway (WI)
  • Tues, July 12 at Attica Raceway Park (OH)
  • Wed-Sat, July 13-16 at Eldora Speedway (OH)
  • Wed, July 20 at Port Royal Speedway (PA)
  • Fri-Sat, July 22-23 at Williams Grove Speedway (PA)
  • Sat-Sun, July 30-31 at Weedsport Speedway (NY)

ANYONE’S GAME: As the halfway point of the 80-race grind approaches, The Greatest Show on Dirt continues to offer one of the most exciting and closest championship battles in 45 years of Series history. Through 32 completed events, the top-five in the standings are separated by a mere 54 points with things capable of wholesale change on any given night.

  1. Brad Sweet (Kasey Kahne Racing #49)… 4,356 PTS
  2. Carson Macedo (Jason Johnson Racing #41)… -12 PTS
  3. Sheldon Haudenschild (Stenhouse Jr. / Marshall Racing #17)… -24 PTS
  4. David Gravel (Big Game Motorsports #2)… -46 PTS
  5. Logan Schuchart (Shark Racing #1S)… -54 PTS

Cadillac Racing returns to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park

Four Cadillac DPi entries to tackle the challenging road course for first time since 2019
DETROIT (June 29, 2022) – Cadillac Racing is looking forward to returning to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for the first time since 2019 to compete July 3 in the Chevrolet Grand Prix.
NBC will telecast the 2-hour, 40-minute race live at 3 p.m. ET. Four Cadillac Racing DPi entries will race on the fast 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course, with practice sessions scheduled for July 1 — Canada Day — and qualifications July 2.
Renger van der Zande, co-driver with Sebastien Bourdais of the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R, was runner-up in a Cadillac DPi in 2018 at the racetrack near Toronto that opened in 1961.
The 2020 and ’21 races were not contested because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s one of the most amazing tracks in North America. Racing is not about bravery, but here in North America some of those tracks it is about bravery and this one is,” said van der Zande, who co-drove with Bourdais to third place June 26 in the six-hour race on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn Watkins Glen International road course.

Reigning IMSA DPi champion Pipo Derani raced to a fourth-place finish in 2019 in his lone DPi outing at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
“It’s a track that’s very fast. Shorter than Watkins Glen, but for a driver it’s a pleasure to drive it. It’s one that requires big commitment, so I’m looking forward to heading back to that track, which we haven’t been to in a few years,” said Derani, who will share driving duties with Olivier Pla in the No 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R.
“I think it produces good racing, especially with traffic. It’s very narrow and fast and decisions need to be made within a split second. Apparently, there are a few parts of the track that have been resurfaced, so it will be even quicker than it was before.”
The No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R won the 2017 race at CTMP in the first year of the prototype class.
Earl Bamber and Alex Lynn will drive the No 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R, which is third in the DPi championship standings with three IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races remaining. Tristan Vautier and Richard Westbrook will drive the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R.
In addition to the race airing air live on NBC, Peacock will stream flag-to-flag coverage in the United States and IMSA.com outside the U.S. IMSA Radio will air all on-track sessions at IMSA.com, with the race also broadcast on XM 207 and SiriusXM Online 992.Cadillac DPi roster for Chevrolet Grand PrixNo. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R (Cadillac Racing)Renger van der Zande, Sebastien BourdaisVan der Zande and Bourdais co-drove the No. 01 Cadillac DPi-V.R to the victory on the Belle Isle street circuit June 4 and the streets of Long Beach on April 9 – starting from the pole both times. … Belle Isle was the 17th IMSA victory for van der Zande and ninth for Bourdais. … Bourdais set the qualifying lap record time in both events. BULLDOG MENTALITY: Clanton Hits Stride In Return to World of Outlaws

The 2015 Series Champion continues his quest for the World of Outlaws Team Championship at River Cities Speedway

GRAND FORKS, ND– June 29, 2022 – Shane Clanton’s resume in dirt Late Model racing is long and distinguished. That’s why the Zebulon, GA driver, can seize any opportunity before him, even if it means changing plans mid-season.

Clanton triumphantly returned to the World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model Series last month, hitting a stride in Series competition with four top fives and six top 10s—most recently finishing third at Jacksonville Speedway.

As The Most Powerful Late Models on the Planet power into River Cities Speedway on July 15, the “Georgia Bulldog” hopes to hold onto that momentum. He stated the most significant reason his team has taken a step forward is the work done before they get to the track.

“I think we were prepared,” Clanton said. “We were ready to do it, and when we got here, we were gung-ho.”

The momentum in May and early June with the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models also helped him score a $40,000 victory at Belleville Speedway’s 1/4-mile track. It was a massive win for Clanton’s team, especially in the current economy.

“All of us need a lot of money to go up and down the road, so any kind of win that you get, especially a big one, it helps out tremendously,” Clanton said. “The morale is up, [Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55] hurt us a little bit, but hopefully, we can translate what we did a couple of weeks ago.”

Like many teams in 2022, Skyline Motorsports deals with changes, including new crew members.

Wyatt Eichelberger joined Clanton as his crew chief after DIRTcar Nationals in February—bringing more national tour experience to the team. He chased the World of Outlaws CASE late Models tour with 2021 Rookie of the Year Tyler Bruening, Clanton’s teammate.

The 2015 Series champion stated Eichelberger’s importance to his team since making the switch has been invaluable.

“Wyatt has been phenomenal,” Clanton said. “He stepped up to the plate when I needed a crew chief, and he’s become one. He wanted a bigger role in the team, and he’s definitely stepped up to the plate. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t know where I’d be right now.”

When traveling to a World of Outlaws race, you’ll see not only Shane Clanton hanging around the pit area. Shane’s wife Michelle and their two kids are also at the track supporting him. His family is one of the reasons he decided to return to the Series, especially after seeing what’s on the schedule once Labor Day weekend arrives.

“I looked at the schedule, and I could be home eight more weeks than what I was over there,” Clanton said. “I got two little ones and a wife that needs me sometimes to be at home.

“Traveling is a big deal, and I’ve done this a long time, and you do get tired of the road. So, as much as I can stay home, the better off I’ll be.”

Clanton finds himself in a unique situation as the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models hit their summer swing in the Upper Midwest. While he’s too far behind to catch Dennis Erb Jr. for the driver’s title, he still has a chance to win the team points for Skyline Motorsports.

With Clanton taking over for Bruening, they’ve essentially shared duties as the full-time team for Skyline Motorsports, which is currently third in team points—170 points behind Erb.

“We definitely want to get more top fives and the championship is still available for the car owner,” Clanton said. “I’m doing all I can. I know Dennis [Erb] beat us pretty bad [Saturday] night, but all he has to have is two bad runs, and we’re back in it.

“I know we’re going to some good tracks that I normally run good at up in Grand Forks [River Cities Speedway] and them places, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Clanton hopes to pad his resume when the World of Outlaws CASE Late Models return to River Cities Speedway on Friday, July 15—a track he’s found success at, winning in 2017.  It’s another place the “Georgia Bulldog” can continue his stride toward a team championship for Skyline Motorsports.

Following the race at River Cities, the World of Outlaws will venture to I-94 Sure Step Speedway on Saturday, July 16, and then Red Cedar Speedway on July 17. For tickets to both, click here.

TERBO TIME: Erb Invades Summer Nationals, Wins Return to Racing at Red Hill

Points leader Pierce takes DNF, rookie Freeman posts career-best finish

SUMNER, IL – June 28, 2022 – In Red Hill Raceway’s return to racing for the first time in nearly 18 years Tuesday night, Tyler Erb made the most of his first DIRTcar Summer Nationals appearance in two seasons, dominating the evening for his fifth career Hell Tour victory.

On paper, the box scores show he led all 30 laps, green-to-checkered. But this was anything but a cakewalk victory for the 25-year-old from New Waverly, TX, as he held off a hungry field of multiple Summer Nationals champions behind him to collect the $5,000 check.

From the outside pole, Erb grabbed the lead on Lap 1 and began a wild chase with Summer Nationals points leader Bobby Pierce around the 3/8-mile. They reached lapped traffic only eight circuits in, creating an interesting obstacle for the leaders to navigate.

“I’d run hard, feel like we got a comfortable lead, and then hit lapped cars immediately – which kinda makes it hairy,” Erb said. “I’d try to wait, wait, then when I’d get to a lapped car, just pass them as fast as I can and not follow them for a lap or two.”

Erb defended through the halfway point with Pierce stalking closely behind him until Lap 16, when Pierce slowed coming out of Turn 4 and spun around; a small flame coming from under the hood. The reigning champion was pushed back to the pits, done for the night, scored in 13th-place.

That opened the door for four-time champion Brian Shirley to stake his claim for the lead, though he was largely unsuccessful. Over the final fourteen laps, Shirley gave Erb a few challenges for the top spot, but ultimately came up just one spot short.

“Randall [Edwards, crew chief] would show me a lead, then he’d close-up, show me a bit of a lead, then close-up,” Erb said. “With five-to-go, I swear I must’ve passed a lapped car or [Shirley] must’ve hit a hole, and he showed me a big lead, and the next lap I came by, he showed me [Shirley] was right on my butt.”

Shirley’s best chance came in the final laps, where Erb got held-up by a big pack of slower cars in multiple lanes right in front of him, slowing his pace enough to allow Shirley to close rapidly. Erb carefully navigated through them and even survived a last-ditch swipe at the lead out of Turn 4 by Shirley to hang on for the win.

“With five to go, the lapped cars were literally four-wide in front of me,” Erb said. “That was probably the sketchiest part of the whole deal. I just didn’t want to get tangled up with them.”

Summer Nationals rookie standout Payton Freeman came from eighth to finish third – a new personal best on the tour. Four-time champion Shannon Babb ran inside the top-five all night and came home fourth, while 2010 champion Jason Feger rounded out the top-five.

EIGHT IS GREAT: Hoffman Wins Eighth of Season at Red Hill Debut

Not only did Red Hill Raceway reopen its gates to the public for the first time in nearly 18 years Tuesday night, but it now has an honorable distinction of hosting two generations of UMP Modified stars on its front-stretch Victory Lane.

Nick Hoffman grew up watching father Darrell Hoffman race and win multiple times on the big 3/8-mile red dirt oval in the late 1990s through the early 2000s. Fast forward to 2022, and Nick himself now stands exactly where one of his racing heroes did with his trip to DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals Victory Lane for the eighth time in 10 races Tuesday night.

“A lot of times, he’d come over here and run, or we’d go down to Paducah and run a little bit,” Hoffman said, reminiscing on the days in the grandstands watching his father. “At this time, I would’ve been five, six, seven years old. I remember bits and pieces of this place.”

In short, Hoffman led all but one lap en route to his 64th career Summit Modified triumph. It was a dominating performance in which no driver challenged him once he got the lead throughout the 20-lap main event.

Several cautions were spread throughout the race, but Hoffman held strong out front by changing restart lanes.

“I restarted on the top almost every single time, except that last one where I moved out to the top to get a better run down the hill,” Hoffman said. “I just tried to change it up a little bit with it being a single-file restart; It makes it a little bit tougher being the leader.”

CHRIS DYSON LOOKS FOR MORE ROAD AMERICA SUCCESS IN TRANS AM & NASCAR XFINITY

THOMAS MERRILL TO DRIVE SECOND CD RACING TRANS AM ENTRY
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 28, 2022) – Chris Dyson has good reason to be optimistic about his chances this weekend at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s Road America racetrack. Not only is the reigning Trans Am by Pirelli Series champion the defending Road America TA race winner, Dyson also has a pair of IMSA American Le Mans Series race wins there (in 2003 and 2012) and in 2015 at the classic four-mile circuit piloted a Bentley Continental GT3 to victory in the Pirelli World Challenge.

“It’s not just that I love racing at Road America because we’ve been successful there,” Dyson said. “It’s just a great driver’s track. It’s fast and very challenging in any car you drive there. And I’ve been coming to Elkhart since I was very young to watch my Dad race. It’s a place that really sparked my imagination. I’m excited every day I get to spend at Road America. And I know I’m not alone in that respect.”

Dyson isn’t expecting a cakewalk at Road America – far from it. Coming off 1-2 sweeps at Lime Rock Park and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, this weekend the CD Racing team will be facing probably the strongest opposition it has faced so far this season. This 28-car Trans Am field includes some additional potent entries in the headline TA class where Dyson competes in his #20 ALTWELL Ford Mustang. NASCAR veteran Paul Menard will be back in the second Franklin Road Apparel Camaro for the first time since winning at Charlotte in the second race of the season (the only time a CD Racing driver hasn’t stood at the top of the podium this year). Veteran racer Boris Said is entered in Pancho Weaver’s Dodge Challenger, which Kaz Grala put on the pole last weekend at Mid-Ohio. Grala is entered in a second Weaver Dodge. Weaver’s engines are well known for their big power, a quality that suits Road America’s hills and long straightaways.”This is going to be a great weekend for the TA category,” Dyson said. “As we showed last year, when a few more aces show up at Road America, the quality of the show goes up. This weekend we have some great cars and drivers out there to mix it up.” Thomas Merrill to Stand In For Masaood at Road America

Matthew Brabham, who drove CD Racing’s #21 allgram Ford Mustang into the winner’s circle last weekend will be back at Mid-Ohio this weekend, driving for Andretti Autosport in the Indy Lights race. Substituting this weekend for regular driver Humaid Masaood (who has previous business commitments) is TA2-class standout Thomas Merrill, who will be doing double duty at Road America.

Merrill, who is locked in a tight battle with Rafa Matos for the TA2 championship point lead, has won the past two races in that class.

“In between winning the TA2 races at Lime Rock and Mid-Ohio, Thomas finished second in his class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” Dyson noted. “Our TA-class cars are a step up from the Mustang he drives in TA2, but Thomas is a very talented driver and I am certain he’ll be just as competitive in our car this weekend as he will be in his TA2 car. Some of the guys on our team have worked with Thomas in other series, and he impressed them with his talent and hard work. Also, big thanks to Mike Cope, Thomas’s TA2 car owner, for letting us put Thomas in the allgram Mustang this weekend.”

“I’m grateful to Humaid and Chris for giving me this opportunity,” Merrill said. “CD Racing fields great cars and I look forward to doing my very best for the team.”

Dyson to Drive in Road America NASCAR Xfinity Race

Merrill won’t be the only driver doing double duty at Road America. Dyson is entered in the Henry 180 NASCAR Xfinity race, driving Emerling-Gase Motorsports’ #35 Concord American Flagpole Chevrolet Camaro.

“I have to thank my good friend Andy Lally for recommending me to the team, which was looking for someone with road-racing credentials in big cars,” said Dyson, who in addition to his extensive Trans Am experience three years ago drove in the 2019 Mid-Ohio Xfinity race. “I was able to run in the top 10 until we got crashed out on a late-race restart. It was a good learning experience and since then I’ve had three more seasons of relevant Trans Am experience. Emerling-Gase Motorsports has a good car, and Brian Keselowski is a terrific crew chief. This is going to make for a very busy Saturday afternoon – our Trans Am race shortly after the Xfinity race ends – but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Dyson is pleased to be bringing Concord American Flagpoles, whose livery is on CD Racing’s USAC sprint and Silver Crown cars, on board for the NASCAR race. “The whole Xfinity car is in Concord American Flagpole colors,” Dyson said. “It’s white with red and blue shooting stars. It’s particularly great to be able to show these colors on America’s birthday.”

Video Coverage of Road America

The Road America NASCAR Xfinity race starts at 1:30 pm CT (2:30 ET) on Saturday, July 2. It will be broadcast on the USA network, with radio coverage on the Motor Racing Network (MRN).

The Road America TA race will be streamed live and free on the Trans Am Series by Pirelli YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheTransAmSeries) The 25-lap (100-mile) TA-class race takes the green flag Saturday, July 2 at 4:45 pm CT (5:45 pm ET).

CORVETTE RACING AT CTMP: Oh… Canada!!

Team back at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with C8.R for the first time DETROIT (June 28, 2022) – For the first time since 2019, Corvette Racing and the rest of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is back at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for Sunday’s Chevrolet Grand Prix.
Absent from the team’s calendar since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course just outside of Toronto will see the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8.R for the first time. It will be the fourth generation of Corvette to compete at CTMP since the Corvette Racing program first raced there in 2000 with the Corvette C5-R.
Since that time, the team has claimed 11 victories at the track – second-most among all venues behind only Sebring. Three of those came in Corvettes driven by Canadian and Corvette Racing legend Ron Fellows, who is co-owner of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor are part of a six-car field in the GT Daytona (GTD) PRO category, which is part of a 14-car grid in the overall GTD category. The pairing will look to rebound from a disappointing race in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen two days ago. The No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R finished sixth in the GTD PRO class and 11th among GTD category runners.
Both drivers have victories to their credit at CTMP in Corvette racecars. Garcia won the GT Le Mans (GTLM) category in 2014, driving a Corvette C7.R with Jan Magnussen. Taylor was victorious the following year in a Corvette Daytona Prototype for Wayne Taylor Racing.
Garcia also is a former pole-winner at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (2016) and set the fastest GTLM race lap in 2015.
The Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 3. The race will air live on NBC and stream live on Peacock inside the United States and IMSA.comoutside the U.S. IMSA Radio will air on-track sessions beginning with Saturday morning’s practice at IMSA.com with the race call also on XM 207 and SiriusXM Online 992.
ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “I would have loved to go to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and raced the C8.R in full GTLM spec. That would have been really good to feel and see how the C8.R was around that track. We knew the C7.R was so good, and I believe this car would have been even better. This is always a track I’ve always loved. It’s always tight racing, and traffic is intense. Strategy is important with such a short lap time because it’s very fast. You need to be on top of things, play it smart and be ready to react to everything around you. It can go either way. But CTMP always brings a really good show and good racing. We’re looking forward to getting back there. It’s a track where I’ve done many, many laps in the past. I don’t think things will be way different. Coming from The Glen, I think we’ll be ready to get right into things at CTMP.”
JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Going to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is something we’ve missed. Canada always has an amazing group of fans who are so passionate. The last time they saw Corvette Racing, it was with the C7.R. So they haven’t seen our new car, and we’re excited to show it off there. What we’ve seen so far with the C8.R is that it suits every type of racetrack. We saw last year at Watkins Glen how successful it was at a high-speed track, and that’s kind of what CTMP is. I think our car will suit the track well, and I know we bring an amazing amount of Corvette fans there. They’ll definitely love seeing it.”

Dominic Scelzi Produces Podium Performance During Skagit Speedway’s Dirt Cup

Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (June 28, 2022) – Dominic Scelzi enjoyed another successful trip to the Northwest last week when he garnered a podium during the 50th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway.

Scelzi, who captured the event title the previous year, kicked off the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series event last Thursday by setting quick time during qualifying out of the 43 drivers. He then advanced from eighth to fifth place in a heat race to rank second in points. A 16-car inversion lined Scelzi up on the inside of the eighth row in the main event.

“The only time we struggled all weekend was the Thursday main event,” he said. “We never were able to get rolling. There were two open reds and a bunch of cautions. We’d go green and jump up top and someone would jump the cushion and we’d have to slow up. We’d dive down low and someone would slow down to the hit the bottom. We never got in a rhythm and didn’t get to put a bunch of laps together. It was unfortunate we didn’t have a better night to capitalize on our quick time, but at the end of the night we were tied for fifth in points.”

Scelzi placed 12th for only his seventh time of being outside the top 10 all season.

The team kicked off Friday’s action by timing in 16th quick in qualifying.

“We went out super late, but we recovered by going 16th quick and then we went fifth to second in the heat race,” Scelzi said. “That started us sixth in the feature and we got up there quickly to battle for the lead. I think we passed Trey (Starks) for the lead three times. The first time we got by him the yellow came out. The second time we got by him he got us back. The third time a yellow came out again. I couldn’t seem to stay past him, but at the end of the day we were right there and ran second, which gave us good points going into Saturday.”

Scelzi’s runner-up result was his 18th top five of the season. He ranked third in overall points following the two preliminary nights. That locked him into the pole shuffle on Saturday. Scelzi won twice to advance into the final.

“In the pole shuffle I beat (Justin) Sanders on the outside and was able to get down to the bottom,” he said. “With Tyler (Courtney) I did the same thing in the final round, but I didn’t have enough room to chop him into turn one. He got back underneath me to win the pole shuffle. I felt it was an advantage to start up there on the outside in the feature. He beat me to the flagstand, but I was able to rip by him in turns one and two. He slid me in turns three and four, but I got around him. If we wanted to win it we had to lead the first lap. With the way the track was, being so top dominant, you had to lead right away.”

Scelzi led the first 24 laps of the 50-lap main event, earning him $24,000 in bonus money with $1,000 for each lap led.

“We went unchallenged for 24 laps,” he said. “We got to traffic and it was really tough. Tyler slid me and I tried to turn down the hill. We drag raced him into turn three and I wasn’t able to clear him. I followed him around for about 10 laps and slid him into turns three and four. As I slid him the yellow flag was coming out for the planned stoppage. For the amount of traffic we were in I saw our chances sort of slip away with that red, but that was part of it. For the last 15 laps I don’t feel we got better or worse, but I was starting to struggle getting through the hole in turn four. It allowed Kerry (Madsen) to slide me and I wasn’t able to get back by him so we ended up third.

“We came away with a $42,000 payday and led 24 laps and we were in contention to win the Dirt Cup again. As disappointing as it was to leave without the win and the big check, we showed our speed all weekend. I’m already looking forward to next year. I want to take the crown home.”

Scelzi will take this weekend off before returning to action on July 8 at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, Calif., and July 9 at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif., with the King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series.

Expect Fireworks as Progressive AFT Arrives at New York Short Track

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 28, 2022) – Progressive American Flat is destined to deliver fireworks at the Mission New York Short Track presented by Mad Max Indian Motorcycle as the series arrives at Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, New York, for an Independence Day weekend showdown on Saturday, July 2. It’s been an explosive season to date in the Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle classwith renewed parity and unpredictability. Still less than halfway through the campaign, the premier class has already witnessed five different winners across two manufacturers and three teams, while nine different riders and four different makes have been represented on the podium. As much as some things may have changed, reigning champion Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Insurance FTR750) remains atop the pecking order, holding both the points lead and bragging rights as the only rider to score more than one win this season. Mees enters the New York Short Track with two prior wins at the 3/8-mile circuit, including a critical victory that helped kickstart his late-season flurry to take back the crown a year ago. That said, he’s been under intense pressure on multiple fronts, not the least of which coming from the Estenson Racing Yamaha duo of Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) and JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT), who went 1-2 the last time the series visited a Short Track. Daniels is only growing in strength and looks more and more like a genuine title threat each successive week. Beach isn’t far behind and still has some of his best tracks ahead. Two-time class champion Briar Bauman (No. 3 Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Insurance FTR750) is still very much in the mix as well. Currently ranked third in the points, Bauman is in something of a wins drought by his high standards, going winless since reigning supreme in the ‘22 season opener. Furthermore, that opening-night triumph stands as his only victory over the last 15 races, dating back to just before last year’s New York Short Track. Bauman is motivated, talented, and determined, not to mention a past winner at Weedsport, which could make him an extremely formidable contender this weekend. Of course, there’s also last weekend’s winner, Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750), who appears to be finding his footing at just the right time. He leads a group of ‘22 podium finishers ranked just behind the top four that also includes Bronson Bauman (No. 37 Latus Motors Racing Harley-Davidson XG750R), Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750), and Davis Fisher (No. 67 Bob Lanphere’s BMC Racing Indian FTR750). And don’t forget about Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750), who will be making one of his select appearances this season at Weedsport. Halbert showed plenty of pace at Laconia and split the wins with Mees here a year ago, and thus, should not be underestimated. Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines The Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines championship is fast taking shape as a two-man race featuring points leader Jesse Janisch (No. 33 Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson XG750R) and defending champ Cory Texter (No. 1 G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing Yamaha MT-07). They’ve been nearly perfectly matched with both owning a pair of wins, while Janisch holds a slight podium advantage (6-5) to go along with his one-point title lead. Janisch has been on an incredible roll, racking up five consecutive finishes of first or second, while Texter finally unleashed his most convincing effort of the season last weekend at Lima. With Janisch out of the series completely before getting an opportunity to ride as a sub late last year and Texter in the midst of his farewell season, either rider would make a most deserving and compelling champion. A wild card will be thrown into the mix this weekend as 2020 class champ James Rispoli (No. 43 Wally Brown Racing/Haversack KTM 890 Duke) will be back in action. The WBR KTM 890 Duke proved itself a race winner straight out of the gate at the Red Mile. It’ll be interesting to see how it fares this weekend on a Short Track. Several other riders could have their say as well, including the on-form Billy Ross (No. 109 Mission Foods/Roof Systems Harley-Davidson XG750R), Cameron Smith (No. 34 Thee Cathy Gray/Al Barker Yamaha MT-07), Ben Lowe (No. 25 Mission Foods/Roof Systems Yamaha MT-07), and Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650). Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER Kody Kopp (No. 12 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-FFE) has been nearly unstoppable in the two most recent Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER races, barely providing his rivals a turn in the spotlight as he’s conquered practices, qualifying sessions, Semis, and Main Events alike. Kopp now owns over half of the season’s race wins (four of seven) and is threatening to build up an unassailable points gap if his challengers don’t find a way to counter him and soon. Morgen Mischler (No. 13 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R) stands as the only rider within even a two-race margin of Kopp. The Honda ace is due for a bounce-back effort after logging an eighth and seventh during Kopp’s last two dominant outings. Fortunately for Mischler, he won here a year ago and could desperately use a repeat performance right about now. Mischler’s teammate, Dalton Gauthier (No. 79 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R), is ranked third and also stands as a former winner of the New York Short Track. While Kopp, Mischler, and Gauthier are the only winners in the field thus far this season, a number of others have what it takes to join those ranks, including Trent Lowe (No. 48 Mission Foods/Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda CRF450R), Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-FFE), Trevor Brunner (No. 21 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F), and Chase Saathoff (No. 106 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R). There will be plenty to keep fans entertained off the track as well, including numerous vendors, a variety of food and beverage options, and the Kids Zone. Chasing Neon will entertain with its eclectic mix of live party music that ranges from country to classic rock and everything in between, while Rich the Magic Man will be performing the illusions that have made him Rochester’s most amazing and engaging magician for over 30 years.
