For the final race of the Round of 8 in the The Chase to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship, teams traveled to Talladega, Alabama and the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway. On Friday, two practice sessions were scheduled and Timothy Peters posted the 10th fastest lap in the first and did not participate in the second. Matt Tifft returned to the No. 11 Surface Sunscreen/BrainGear Toyota Tundra and posted the ninth and sixth fastest laps. On Saturday morning, teams returned for two rounds of single-truck elimination qualifying and Peters transferred into the final round, then secured the sixth starting spot, while Tifft also transferred and started the fred’s 250 in the 12th position. In the afternoon, the green flag flew for 94 laps at the legendary facility, and Peters quickly charged to the front, leading 14 laps. Tifft also made his way to the front and led three laps. A late race caution flag derailed Peters’ run for the win, but the veteran driver finished third and secured his spot in the second round of the drivers’ Chase for the championship. Tifft also picked up a top 10 finish and crossed the line in ninth earning the No. 11 team a spot in the next round of the Owners’ Chase.

Timothy Peters Finishes Third to Secure Place in Chase Round of Six

Timothy Peters and the No. 17 Red Horse Racing team finished third at Talladega Superspeedway to secure a berth in the second round of the Chase for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship. The weekend began with two practice sessions scheduled for Friday, but Peters and crew chief Shane Huffman decided the No. 17 Tundra was dialed in after posting the 10th fastest lap in the first session and sat the second session out. In two rounds of single-truck, knockout qualifying on Saturday morning, Peters transferred to the final round and secured the sixth starting spot for the fred’s 250 with a lap of 53.982 seconds. Peters charge to the front of the field right off the bat, jumping to second place on the first lap. The Danville, Virginia native took the lead on lap 32 and led several laps until the caution flag flew. Huffman brought Peters to pit road for fuel only and the No. 17 returned to the track in the second position. He would pick up the lead again on lap 40 for several more laps, but a series of cautions and a slow pit stop would set him back in traffic. The series veteran made his way back to the top five, but a lack of drafting partner and a caution in the closing laps limited him to a third-place finish. Peters will enter the Chase Round of 6 as the third seed.

READING, Pa. (Oct. 2) — Jeg Coughlin Jr. managed to keep his sense of humor despite a first-round loss to longtime rival and fellow multi-time world champion Greg Anderson at Sunday’s 32nd annual Dodge NHRA Nationals.

“Traditionally, at least this year, Greg is usually a car length ahead of me by the time I get into high gear,” Coughlin said with a wry smile. “Today we had a nice launch and went through the gears really efficiently and I peeked over and didn’t see him at all. Peters was able to remain in the top-10 and soon would climb back into the top five following a two-tire stop under caution on lap 105. Even though crew chief Shane Huffman continued to make adjustments, Peters battled a tight condition throughout the afternoon, but the veteran driver was able to capitalize on an outside restart position in several late race caution periods to gain track position and finish fifth.

Race Rewind: New Hampshire Motor Speedway… The opening round of the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase format began with an eighth-place finish for Brett Moffitt and the No. 11 Red Horse Racing team. Moffitt held his ground inside the top 10 on the first race run, amidst three cautions and subsequent restarts, and came to pit road under a lap 53 yellow. Under that caution, crew chief Scott Zipadelli made a track bar adjustment to aid his driver’s tight condition on corner exit to compliment two tires and fuel. While running 11th at the end of the race’s longest green flag run on lap 104, Moffitt came to pit road under yellow for four tires and more chassis changes to aid his balance. As the race’s final restart came on lap 137, Moffitt used the outside lane to complete a three-wide pass to take the eighth position, where he would run until the checkered flag. The finish has the No. 11 team fifth on the Chase Grid in the Owners’ Championship standings, three points ahead of the cutoff.

Matt Tifft Quote:
On racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway…
“I can’t wait to get to Las Vegas. We had a really good run at Charlotte Motor Speedway earlier in the year, so I feel like we can duplicate some of that success this weekend. Race Rewind: Canada… In the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ fourth trek north of the border to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (CTMP), Timothy Peters had transmission issues just past the halfway point, which foiled a top-five run, and handed Peters and his Red Horse Racing team an 18th-place finish in the 64-lap event. Crew chief Shane Huffman would not call Peters to pit road until lap 24, when Peters would come in for four Goodyear tires and Sunoco fuel. Huffman’s strategy would have Peters visit pit road once more for fuel only under green on lap 34. That fuel strategy netted Peters the fourth position by lap 40, but he fell victim to transmission woes shortly thereafter on lap 43, losing third gear completely. The veteran driver nursed his No. 17 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra home in 18th. With one race before the Chase, the 18th-place result keeps Peters in the eighth position on the Chase grid, 32 points ahead of the cutoff.

Timothy Peters Quote:
On racing at Chicagoland Speedway…
“With the way our momentum and our speed has been on the bigger tracks, we all feel confident going in that we can continue that success. It would be nice if we could go there and win and lock in (The Chase) for sure on the last race. Brett Moffitt Wins at Michigan International Speedway

Brett Moffitt continued to impress and picked up his first career victory in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in the Careers for Veterans 200. In his last three starts, the 24-year-old has finished third, second and first. Moffitt posted the fourth and second-fastest times respectively in two practice sessions on Friday. In two rounds of single-truck knockout qualifying, Moffitt transferred to the final round to earn the sixth starting position for the 100-lap event in the No. 11 Toyota Tundra. The start of the race was delayed due to inclement weather, but the green flag flew under sunny skies. Moffitt moved into the top-five by lap 20. Under caution for the first time on lap 32 for the expiration of the caution clock, crew chief Scott Zipadelli brought Moffitt to pit road for four Goodyear tires and a full tank of Sunoco fuel. The Iowa native reported that the No. 11 Tundra was a little loose into the corner and a little tight off the corner. Moffitt restarted in the 10th position, but quickly began moving to the front of the field. Under a subsequent caution on lap 46, Moffitt hit pit road to top off with fuel. After restarting in the sixth position, Moffitt immediately moved into the fourth position and on lap 62, he took the third position. Under caution on lap 63, Zipadelli called him to pit road for two right side tires and fuel. In the remaining 37 laps, Moffitt continued to run in the top-five, taking second place with three to go. On the white flag lap, Moffitt passed teammate Timothy Peters, and recorded his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win, in just six starts.

Brett Moffitt Quotes:
What does this win mean to you?
“This has been huge. At the beginning of the year we didn’t have anything on the schedule. Coming here and these guys give me such good race trucks week in and week out. I knew it was just a matter of time. Honestly, during the race I didn’t think it was going to be our day. It was just tough out there with the draft, but what an amazing finish. It couldn’t have worked out any better for us. I can’t thank Tom DeLoach (team owner) and everybody at Red Horse Racing enough and Camping World for putting this on.”

How important is this win for you moving forward?
“Winning is awesome, no matter what the circumstance is. Last week finishing second was really frustrating for me because I have a short timetable to get the job done and I knew everyone was impressed with the runs we were having and happy, but for my sake I needed to go out there and win. This was our job to get the 11 truck in the owner’s championship and we did that and hopefully we can get another win next week and hopefully some more doors open down the road. All in all it’s been a great opportunity and a lot of fun racing when you have the right tools for the job and our partners with Toyota and Tom (DeLoach, team owner) give us those tools and me and Scott (Zipadelli, crew chief) are just able to make the most of it.”

Season High Second-Place Finish for Timothy Peters at Michigan

After leading a race high 42 laps, Timothy Peters finished second, and completed a 1-2 sweep for Red Horse Racing in the Careers for Veterans 200 at Michigan International Speedway. Peters’ second-career runner-up result at MIS keeps him eighth on the Chase grid with two races remaining before the Chase for the Camping World Truck Series championship. The 100-lap contest began from the fourth position for Peters, and he quickly asserted himself as the truck to beat, taking the lead on lap six. Peters radioed crew chief Shane Huffman that his Toyota Tundra was slightly on the tight side, and the team countered with slight adjustments on a lap 33 caution. The Danville, Virginia native regained the lead on lap 24, and would pace the field on two more occasions. Peters ran in the top five for the lion’s share of the afternoon, and withstood numerous challenges and a barrage of caution flags to stay in contention in the second half of the race. Peters’ final stint out front lasted from laps 84 to 98, and he found himself in a three-way dogfight for the lead on the final lap. The ten-time NCWTS race winner would cross the line .098 seconds behind his teammate, Brett Moffitt. The result gave Red Horse Racing its first 1-2 finish since Peters finished second to John King at Daytona International Speedway in 2012.

The 9 (William Byron) locked onto our bumper there and pushed us really hard down into turn three, but we had to do all we could do to stay in front, but good effort by everybody at Red Horse Racing, Shane Huffman (crew chief), the pit crew, Toyota, Triad Engines – just tough to swallow right there, but it felt good to run like we did all day.”
