The OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland is the first of six races in five weeks, a grueling stretch that will decide the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion. The city-owned 1.964-mile, 12-Turn Portland International Raceway road course, just south of the Columbia River, is playing host to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for the 32nd time. Team Penske’s David Malukas, who is still looking for his first career NTT INDYCAR SERIES win, has moved into second place in the title fight after a season-saving drive at Nashville Superspeedway. The 24-year-old recovered after hard contact in practice ended with a trip to the hospital, driving from 25th to third place in the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix. Team Chevy’s winners on the season, Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren), Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) and Josef Newgarden (Team Penske) sit in fourth, fifth and sixth place, making four of the top-six in the title fight Chevrolet-powered drivers. Chevrolet-powered drivers have won nine times at Portland International Raceway, including four of the seven races since the series returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2018. With a pair of natural-terrain road course races – Portland International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca – remaining, Team Chevy’s progress is measurable. With the same two road-course races remaining in 2025, Chevrolet had scored 101 fewer points than its competition and had not yet won a race on a natural-terrain road course. This season, Chevrolet-powered drivers have won three of four races and outscored their competition by 68 points. Álex Palou, driving for Honda, had scored almost 100 more points than any other driver on natural-terrain road courses, with the two West Coast road courses remaining. And, only three of the top ten in points on that type of track wore Bowties. In 2026, Arrow McLaren’s Lundgaard, representing Team Chevy, has collected 37 more points than the next best driver, and five of the top 10 on natural-terrain road courses are Chevrolet-powered drivers. Lundgaard, with wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course and Road America, has been the strongest driver on natural-terrain road courses, scoring the most points (185) and posting the best average finish (1.5) among all 25 full-time drivers.
