Randy Meyer Racing celebrated a dominant weekend at the NHRA Carolina 4-Wide Nationals as Matt Cummings drove the GUNK dragster to the winner’s circle, while teammate McKenna Bold set career-best MPH during qualifying.
Cummings established himself as the driver to beat early in the weekend. He opened qualifying with a 5.224-second pass at 274.89 mph that placed him second, then improved on Saturday to a 5.196 at 271.52 mph, to secure the No. 1 qualifying spot heading into eliminations.
Bold also made impressive strides during qualifying in her Diezel Excavating dragster. She started the event with a clean 5.349 at 277.94 mph before improving to a 5.314 in the second session. On Saturday she went straight down the groove for a stellar 5.295 at 278.40 mph, her fastest career pass, which moved her into the No. 9 position on the ladder.

Eliminations began Saturday night with both drivers in the same opening round quad. Cummings kept his hot streak alive, running 5.249 at 273 mph to move into the next round. Bold’s momentum came to a heartbreaking end in the opening round when her dragster slowed to a 5.40-second pass and suffered a major engine failure.
Cummings carried the team’s banner into the later rounds on Sunday with remarkable power. In the semifinals, he unleashed the low elapsed time of the event, a 5.169 at 277.77 mph, to secure lane choice for the final quad. With the pressure on, Cummings and the GUNK team delivered one last flawless performance, storming to a 5.182 at 276.86 mph to claim the event victory.
“I wanted redemption from my first round loss in the Spring at this track. A lot of racers shy away from the 4-wide races because of its complexity, but Randy Meyer has always done well at the track,” Cummings said. “This weekend was one of those where everything just clicked. We had a great car from the start of qualifying, the crew gave me everything I needed and my team was solid, and we were able to finish it off with a win. It means a lot to be the No. 1 qualifier and back it up by winning on Sunday.
“I felt the most confident I have felt all year behind the wheel at this event. Very much in control of my environment and outside interference. I told myself to just keep making clean runs, don’t look at my competitors we are matched with and just look at my side of the tree. To add another challenge, the best lane was lane three. Most drivers will pick an outside lane at a 4-wide event but when I was told we are going with lane 3 , I just said I’m ready for it.
“There were so many distractions but I was able to block them out. I knew I made a strong pass in the final but had no idea if I won or not, until I was waved over toward the camera area and the winners lane! We won a four-wide event and back to the top of the championship standings with Cowie.”
