Anderson in the championship hunt as NHRA arrives in Reading
MOORESVILLE, N.C., September 30, 2015 – This weekend’s 31st annual NHRA Keystone Nationals at historic Maple Grove Raceway is a breath of fresh air for Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson and a chance to make up some ground. After holding the points lead through most of the summer, Anderson just barely lost his grip on the top spot as the 2015 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship approached – and it he wants it back sooner rather than later.
“My Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro is a very happy racecar, and that is the best thing I have going for me right now,” said Anderson. “I am very fortunate to have the KB Racing team behind me and a car like this, especially when we’re going to Maple Grove Raceway this weekend with a long-range forecast for cool weather. It’s going to be extremely fast there, and there could, possibly, be a record set. That has happened for us at Reading before, and that would be very, very good for our team as we’re trying to get points towards the championship. We have to get every point we possibly can.”
Anderson and Team Summit have a great history in Reading. He scored back-to-back No. 1’s there in 2003 and 2004, and in 2005, Anderson was awarded his first Maple Grove Raceway win. In 2006, he won again. Two more low qualifier awards followed (2007 and 2008) and in 2010 Anderson raced to the final round once more. In all, KB Racing has earned a combined four trophies in six final rounds in the past decade of racing at the quick facility.
This year, and especially lately, Anderson has been a machine during qualifying with his incredibly reliable red Summit Racing Camaro. Last weekend in St. Louis, Anderson swept through qualifying and picked up every possibly point he could with the most dominant car on the property to earn his third consecutive No. 1 qualifier award. With maximum points and a strong position heading into raceday, he had high expectations. Unfortunately for Anderson and Team Summit, the day came to a close in the second round as his opponent had a quicker reaction time on the starting line that dealt a fatal blow.
“With as fast as my car is, I have a chance at winning any race and of getting that record in Reading if conditions are there,” said Anderson, who is No. 2 in the Pro Stock points. “We have to look forward to that and hope for a humongous weekend. That’s what it’s going to take right now. I’m disappointed about last weekend, but there is no time to sit down, cry and kick rocks. I’m going to keep my head up and keep digging, and we will get back to winning races.”
